Setting Up A New Network For A Small Business?
Feb 13, 2012He currently has 1 server, and 11 workstations, he also has a network switch that we will be replacing.We have picked out a Dell server, running Windows Server 2008 R2 that will be used as the main file server, as well as the domain controller. Where I seem to be confused is on setting up the networking component, particularly how the machines will get IP addresses. As mentioned, I will be purchasing a new Ethernet switch, in order to get the fastest LAN speed possible; I have selected the Dell PowerConnect 2816, which is a 10/100/1000Mbs switch. My question is, will I be letting the switch handle the IP's/DHCP or would I be better off, setting up the server for DHCP? If so, do I also setup the server as the DNS server? From what I am reading online using the server as the DHCP/DNS server gives us more management capabilities and is more "secure". As a test, I loaded Windows Server 2008 R2 on a home machine and played around with this. I got a bit lost on the DHCP and DNS setup and it appears that one needs a Static IP from your ISP in order to setup your serve as the DHCP/DNS server for the domain. Is this correct? I haven't been to his office yet to check out all the existing equipment, is it safe to assume that his ISP provides a router or whatever is needed to feed the switch?

Apr 14, 2011At my office we have a dell server running windows small business server 2003, there are around 15 computers on our network running mostly windows 7 (a few with XP). I am wondering how difficult it is to add a computer to the network so it can log into our domain and all that.I just had to reformat one of the computers and would normally wait for our network guy to do it remotely but If i could do it myself it would save time (and money). I am already an administrator and basically i just need to make it so the log in prompt when windows starts has our office network listed as the domain instead of jus the local log in. It is a dell running windows 7 64 bit.

Setting Up FTP Server Via Dyndns
Jan 9, 2013Today we got our new VDSL internet connection and had to get a new router, which supports VDSL as our old one didn't.We have a small FTP enabled network hard drive (LaCie Cloudbox). With the old router it worked just fine. I configured the new router exactly as the old one, but something isn't right: I cant connect to the FTP server from the outside.I configured the NAT rules to open the FTP port 21 and configured dyndns on the new router also. On the old router all I needed to do to get it to work was configure dyndns and open port 21. However this doesn't work on the new one and I have no clue what the problem could be.I tried reaching it via its domain name and also tried the public ip address but none of them worked. The Network disk is connected to the new Router the same way as it was connected to the old one. The only thing that has changed is the new router. So the problem must lie somewhere in my configuration, as I havent touched anything else.

Jun 15, 2012I'm running a Mac OS X Server on my network. I'd like to use the Server's DNS instead of my ISP's. In the D-Link Router I've set the DNS to the OSX server in the WAN section. Unfortunately it doesn't allow my clients on the network to connect to the internet when I do this.
If I set the DNS on the client to the OS X server it works fine. Or if I set the DNS on the router to my ISP's (or Google's) it works fine too.
Is this a route configuration issue? (And if so, what can I do to fix it?) Or is this an OS X Server issue?
Setting Up A DNS Server On Home Network
Jan 18, 2011I have a small home network. My goal is to use Windows Server 2003 R2 to setup a DNS Server that can create a few simple names for some devices on my LAN, such as my printer. My DNS server will forward other inquiries (like google.com) to OpenDNS. Additionally, I don't want to setup a domain controller for my network. I wish to continue using workgroups,how to setup a Windows DNS Server on a workgroup. My biggest confusion is the FQDN of my name server. By default, it's setup as "server.", where 'server' is the name of my Windows Server 2003 machine. My workgroup is named 'Home'. So I tried 'server.home', but this does not resolve. What DNS suffix do my other machines on the network use by default? Is my domain name on the network really my workgroup name? Another thing I want to avoid is configuring a DNS Suffix for every single client machine on my network in their NIC properties for IPv4. I have a D-Link router, and if I do an "ipconfig /all" on my machine, I see that my DNS suffix is 'router', which is the name of my D-Link router. I try setting my DNS Server FQDN as 'server.router' and that doesn't work either, so I'm out of ideas.

It is also running a Polkast personal cloud application that enables access to all the files through a simple UI rather than having to use FTP server login credentials (which I have also set-up).My home office is set up with Frontier as the ISP and they provide a locked down router/modem that you are not "supposed" to replace. It is made by speedstream and does not allow editing of the dns server or anything else that would be considered needed.I have set it up as the primary router with an ip range of 192.168.0.1 with a subnet of 250.250.250.0..I have several devices (printers, PC's etc plugged into this device via lan.Wireless broadcast and access is disabled...
My primary router is a Sapido 5000 series Gigabit router.I have this router broadcasting a wirelessB/G/N siganl for mobile devices to connect to. The NAS that I opened the thread with is plugged into this router via lan (Cat7).The Ip range of this router is set at 192.168.1.1 with a subnet of 250.250.250.0.All devices on the sapido router have access to the internet, as well as the services of the first router (networked printers, and speedstream router login for admin if needed).I can access the Zyxel NAS (192.168.1.104) from the PCs (192.168.0.2) connected to the speedstream, as well as the mobile devices and laptops (192.168.1.110-150) connected to the sapido.I have installed polkast which is an application that runs in the background on the NAS. It allows web access to all of the files (work docs, multi-media, ebooks, iso files, batch files for utilities etc. from a cell phone, tablet, pc, laptop, any device I want. I should be able to access the files from the web and also on the local WLAN to allow file transfers from the NAS to the device in seconds..When I am on the WLAN I can copy/stream a video file that is approximately 1GB in seconds. However, When I am on 3g 4g or at another location I do not have access. Polkast has simply said that I have an incorrect network configuration. I have confirmed that allk the Polkast side settings are fine and their user support has also confirmed that everything is as it should be. So they insist that the problem lies with my 2 routers. Their suggestion was to go back to using 1 router (HeeHee). I can RDP into any computer on my network from anywhere in the world. So the configurations seem fine. I also have FTP access to the NAS so I believe the ports are all forwarded correctly.

I have a standard wireless router that my isp provides, and a wireless router(TPLink tl-wr1043nd). When i first connected the HDD to my tplink router, i had successfully made an ftp server, but just for local access. Now i cannot get how i can make my ftp server externally(access it from outside my LAN).

May 23, 2012Earlier today I was attempting to do something with my router settings and ended up reading on the internet that I needed to do a hard reset to access my router interface - when I typed in the IP address, it came to a "could not find server" error in the browser. After doing the hard reset (holding down the reset button for 30 seconds) I was able to access the router, and adjust the settings. After doing this though I was no longer able to connect to the internet through the router, although the router is sending out a signal (it says connected to linksys but "no internet connection"). I am currently connected directly to the modem right now using my laptop.
Additional Information:
Router model: WRT45G v.3
ISP: Bellsouth
TL;DR: Did a hard reset on my router, now it's sending out a signal, but no internet. Modem still has internet, as does the router, (the internet button is green).
Cisco WAN :: RV082 Setting Up Public Access To Web Server
Jan 13, 2011I have a new (linksys/cisco) RV082 Router that I have just set up and everything is working except that I can't configure it to allow public access to our web server. I have tried configuring port forwarding under the Forwarding and UPnP menus and still no access from the outside. I have tried accessing it from the outside using both the URL and the IP address and still no access. I have checked with my ISP and no ports are being blocked from their end. I can ping my public static IP from the outside with no problem. The documentation that I've found for this router refers to a menu that is different from the menu of this router and refers to an Applications & Gaming menu which isn't there, but it seems like the port forwarding should handle this.
I have a static public IP, a static internal IP for the server. I have set the port forwarding and UpNP to point to the IP of the server using port 80 and a secondary forward to port 8080. There are no issues accessing the website from within the LAN.

Aug 23, 2009I have a contained environment where I just want my servers all to have the same time. I want them to pull that time from my 3750. What do I have to enable on the 3750 to be the NTP clock source.
Keep in mind that the 3750 will not be getting the source from anywhere else, just my "set clock" command.

Jan 12, 2012I have a network that is currently set up in the following way:Modem -> vonage Motorola router -> wireless router Most computers are hard wired to the Motorola router. Some other ones connect via the linkseys wireless router. All computers are able to connect to the Internet. The problem I have is that I will be setting up a home computer as a file server connected to the Motorola router. The network acts as though it is two meaning that computers on one router can't see computers on the other router. What steps should I take in order to make all computers accessible through both routers.When I type 192.168.1.1 from a computer on the Motorola router, I get nothing, when I type in my actual ip address, I get the Motorola router. When I type in 192.168.1.1 from a linkseys connected computer, I get access to the linkseys router.

Jun 15, 2013I want to public to the internet a web + ftp server, all running in the same machine that now is a performance pc, in the future will be a qnap nas ts-220. I don't need extreme performance so my ISP gives me only 12 Mb down and 0,8 Mb up. I will use the nas as download station, ftp server and a web server when I'll public a personal site.
this is the config:
-modem/router adsl2+ that connects to the internet. ISP gives me dynamic ip! it has 192.168.0.1 ip and I think it cannot be changed.
-a firewall hardware zyxel usg 100 with all active UTM services. it has default ip 192.168.1.1. the netgear in the "attached devices" see the zyxel as 192.168.0.2, the same ip zyxel says to the wan1 port.
-a pc or, in the future, a nas that now has automatically assigned ip 192.168.1.34.
I must use a free or paied service as dyndns or something else. If the solution to retrieve everytime the dynamic ip is to set the ddns only in the router/modem netgear then it can only use dyndns.org or .com or .it with the dns of the associated ddns service. For example: if I set a dyndns.it account in the netgear I must set also the dns provided by dyndns.it because if I set google dns or something else the service cannot work.At the moment I tested only with a filezilla server running on the pc directly connected to the netgear, no zyxel in this test.
The config is:
netgear with ddns service provided by dyndns.it, activated with the username and password, in the wan I setup the dmz as 192.168.0.2, in the adsl settings setup the dyndns.it IPs. in the services of the netgear also provided a custom service with ports from 60000 to 60050 and created two rules one for outbound and one for inbound where I let data pass from the wan to the server in the lan 192.168.0.2.
filezilla running on the pc with windows 7 x64 with lan ip 192.168.0.2 mask 255.255.255.0 as th3 netgear and gateway of course the netgear 192.168.0.1. dns servers same as provided by dyndns.it. filezilla configured with only one anonym user without password for testing, default listening port is 60000, passive mode active with range 60000-60050 and for retrieving IP I set default, no Dyndns.it host cause it will not work.
So configured it works fine!problem is when I connect the zyxel between the netgear and the server.how change the default ip of zyxel? in configuration - ethernet - lan port is correct to set there the default and static ip to 192.168.0.3? there are many options! same as dmz you can set there the static ip and what ip?also when you want to public a server zyxel don't say nothing about port-forwarding. it says only create two address objects one with ip of the netgear and one with the ip of the dmz port then create a rule in the firewall section where you set wan to dmz and destination and origin ip selecting the two address objects previously created then you are ok...no, really no! and the ip of the firewall rules in the netgear? which ip do you must set? 192.168.0.2? or 192.168.0.5 if you set it up in the dmz port of the zyxel? no, it is a conflict so you must set another ip.to set correctly the server to be visible in the internet with the netgear + zyxel usg 100?
