AS I understand the terminology a I won't have enough room to do image backups (these back up all info incl OS ??) as on pc is usingb 677 gb and the other 400 gb ---- and anyway I can re-install windows if anything goes wrong...
SO---am I able to do this-
1. connect the ext- HDD to PC running win 7 64 bit....create a folder called "win 7 64 bit" and then drag and drop filesand folders into that folder(or use windows backup..which i am unfamilar with)
2. then connect to PC running Vista 64 bit ..create a f�lder called "Vista 64 bit" and do as above....
3. Do the same for the laptop running win 7 32 bit
Am I right in assumming that because it's just data I can put info from different OS on to it without and conflicts when connecting it to different Pc's?
Home Network :: Backup And Printer Sharing?
Dec 30, 2011I have decided to set up a simple network at my home. I have got 2 PC's (one ground floor, one up staris), printer, TV and router.Now, my router has got only 4 sockets for RJ45 (no usb connection available). My target is to have one storage hard drive of 2TB for sharing pictures, files and automatic backup from PC's. Make of my router is D-link DIR-615. I want to have PC's connected by RJ45 for quick file transfer and TV as well to load movies from external/network hard drive so 3 of 4 ports are already used.I want to have my printer online in network all the time, so any PC can print at any time without connecting USB cable. Also I do not want to plug my printer into PC downstaris and share it in the network because if PC will be switched off, PC upstaris won't be able to print. So I want all my devices have connected to the router. Printer does not support ethernet interface as well (only usb connection).I've got a choice to buy an External Hard Drive (USB) or Network Hard Drive. I have choosen these two:

As I said, I got 2 devices to connect to my network, and there is also one port available. I know, we got many different hubs etc, but what about printer? It supports only USB 2.0.I have also found very basic NAS on ebay:

I thought I could by external hard drive because it is cheaper than network, and connect it together with my printer to this NAS and then NAS to router. Will I loose file transfer speed?

What this would entail would be that each person in my house has a dedicated hard drive that auto-syncs folders they've selected for backing up (not Memeo under any circumstances!). Then there will be a hard drive for me to work on web projects on. I'd like this computer to be very secure but if needed, I could show my work on the production drive to my boss.

I have the sharing enabled and people within my broadcast domain (the dorms) are able to access my shares. The problem occurs when trying to access those shares from academic buildings which are in a different broadcast domain (and are part of a different VLAN).I have verified with Wireshark that the requests to access the shared media do reach the Windows 7 computer, but for some reason it doesn't respond.

Oct 13, 2012how to share printers and folders between two different networks. My Current set up is AT&T Uverse 2Wire 3800HGV-B with a Linksys WRT320N running WRT plugged into one of the 3800's lan ports. The WRT's WAN port is plugged into the 3800 LAN port. The Ip set up is as follows:
2Wire, Inc. 3800HGV-B (My Router / Internet Connection)
192.168.1.254/24
Linksys WRT320N (Kids Router)
192.168.1.63/24 WAN
192.168.0.1/24 LAN
I use the WRT to manage the kid's Internet usage and limit their bandwidth. Everything works great EXCEPT they (192.168.0.0/24) cannot reach resources on the 192.168.1.0/24 network and I (192.168.1.0/24) cannot reach resources on the 192.168.0.0/24 network. I imagine its because the 2wire router does not know how to get to the 192.168.0.0/24 network. The configuration of the 3800 isnt very intuitive. If I could, I would just put a route in the 3800's routing table so that it knows that 192.168.0.0/24 is behind 192.168.1.63.
how to configure that 3800 to do this
Sharing :: 8032 - Browser Service Has Failed To Retrieve Backup List Too Many Times On Transport
Dec 14, 2011This network has a peer network with a mixture of Win 7, Vista and XP computers. The network problem I am having is with an XP computer that was able to access network shares on a Win 7 Pro (64-bit) computer yesterday, but cannot today. I tried repair steps that have worked for me in the past, but didn't today.
1. Rebooted.
2. Turned off Windows Firewall.
3. Re-ran the Network Setup Wizard and select turn on file and print sharing.
4. Changed IP configuration to choose NETBIOS over TCP/IP.
5. Uninstalled AV software.
Error Messages that I have been receiving:
1. When attempting to connect to a share on Win 7 PC: "Microsoft Windows Network: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. The connection has not been restored."
2. When trying to view the computers in the workgroup: "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.
3. When using the command, "NET VIEW" from the command prompt: "System Error 58 has occurred.
4. Event Log: Browser error 8032. The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport DeviceNetBT_Tcpip_{06ECF93A-1B89-4FF4-923E-F3302EF95FE1}. The backup browser is stopping.
Routers / Switches :: Sharing Across Two Networks In Same Office
Aug 6, 2011My workplace currently has one AD Forest. Slowly we have drifted in to two slightly separate businesses and my boss wants us to create a new AD Forest and segregate the users doing each business. Although we will all be in the same office, each side will authenticate to a different DC. The problem is, that we have some resources that still need to be shared and I would like to share them as eloquently as possible without converging the networks too much. The two networks will be in the same server rack but they will logically appear as this:Forest1.local (original)
-Cable Internet -- Router A (192.168.1.x) -- 48-port switch A -- PC/Phones/Domain Controller AForest2.local (new)
-Cable Internet -- Router B (10.1.1.x) -- 48-port switch B -- PC/Phones/Domain Controller B.
The problem I have is that the users in the "new" network need access to a shared folder, shared customer DB, and shared printers on the original Domain Controller, named "DC A" above. I have complete control over both networks but cant figure it out the best way.My main concern is physical access between the networks. How will a pc on the 10.1.1.x network know where printer 192.168.1.2 is? I thought about creating a forest trust in order to assign proper permission but how will they resolve the names on a different subnets? The two "routers" are just simple SOHO type routers so I cant do much there. I thought about connecting the two switches together but don't know if that would work. Wouldn't the data just get passed to the default gateway (router) anyway. The router would then just drop it. I also though about using the 2nd NIC in each DC and connecting them in each other's subnet. But again Im not sure if it matters if the DC's can reach each other or if the PC's would have to be able to reach the other subnet etc. I also thought about just creating some kind of VPN (hamagachi) or whatever to go out into the internet then back into the other router to the network.The problem is wouldnt every computer wanting to access the shared folder have to have this setup. I would like to limit setting things up on workstations and just limit config to the DC's if possible.I basically just want users in subnet two to be able to map a drive and access printers on DC in subnet one.
Vista Network And Sharing Shows Two Networks?
Feb 29, 2012I changed recently my wireless router (and my ISP) and since then the Network and sharing center lists two networks, both with Local and Internet access.One has the SSID assigned to the router and the other is name "unidentified".All seems to be working fine but i'd like to clean up the mess and remove this undefined thing.I have a vista home premium. Sep 1, 2011My home network starts from the ISP/Cable modem to a Belkin wireless router.
A WIN XP box connects via ethernet cable in that room. A second WIN XP box connects via wireless in the next room. A Third box Win7 laptop connects via wireless in another room.
All machines have Internet Web browsing working fine, all machines can see each others shared files and printers across the home network.
Here's where I get creative... I added a fourth box WIN XP via ethernet (LAN to LAN) to the Win7 Laptop. It shows as an �unidentified network� of type Public in Network and Sharing.
Using Shared Internet Connections on the Win7 laptop, the fourth WIN XP now also has Web browsing working just fine across the LAN to the laptop over the wireless and out to the world.
The Win7 Laptop can see shared files and printers on either side of its networks (fourth WIN XP on the LAN side, and first and second WIN XP on the wireless side), and they can see its shared files and printers.
However, the fourth WIN XP on the LAN network won't see the first and second WIN XP on the wireless side. File and printer sharing doesn't see to make the jump across the Laptop Win7 in the middle.
How do I bridge the two networks for file and printer sharing ??
Linksys WRT54G Router / Folder Sharing Between Networks
Mar 8, 2011The setup...DSL Modem (provides DHCP) LAN port to 24 Port switch. all hard wired PCs are directly attached to 24 port switch.All hard wired PCs can "see" each other.Linksys WRT54G router WAN port is connected to one of the LAN ports of the 24 port switch providing a separate network for my wireless devices.ALL wireless PCs can "see" each other.Problem is that the wired PCs can not "see" the wireless PCs.The wireless PCs can Ping the wired but not the other way around.What I want to do is share folders between the wired and wireless networks.( I know I can turn the router into an AP on the switches LAN, by disabling DHCP in the router, not using its WAN port and hooking one of its LAN ports to the 24 port switch.....BUT... I use the routers access restrictions to limit my kids internet time and without using the WAN port the router does not keep the date and time)It would be like doing file sharing from the internet to a private LAN but without the security concerns!

Aug 9, 2011Trying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems. I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password. Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '' or 'SYSTEMNAME' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

Mar 6, 2012[code] Basically, we used to use Outlook for our customer management, but after I tried to design a custom form for customers that suited our needs better than Outlook's default form (i.e. we don't need state, country, region, etc. for each customer, and we'd prefer to have spots for Roof, Shingle, Shingle color, etc. in their place), we ended up turning OneNote into our new Customer Management System.Our problem is sharing files, and the security or lack thereof that goes along with it.We used to save all the files to a single computer, and use Windows 7 Home group to access them. That worked okay, but often we couldn't see the file-holding computer, and would have to disconnect/reconnect to the internet.
We recently bought a NAS HD, which actually works a lot better than I expected. Unfortunately, we've learned recently that new employees are not always the most trustworthy. So this is what we are trying to do:We want to set up some type of way for us to save, store, and access files, which allows us to keep track of who has done what (access, save, copy, delete, print, etc.), preferably one where we can set up alerts if certain things happen (i.e. someone copies and pastes the entire thing, or attempts to delete). We've run into the problem where, yes, we want people to be able to copy and paste certain documents, yes we want people to be able to print, but no we don't want someone to be able to print out our entire customer lists, current project lists, etc.This NAS HD (MyBook Live 2TB by Western Digital) could quite possibly have the most ridiculous set up I've ever encountered. I can set up accounts and passwords, but they are completely irrelevant because from "Computer" you can just select the z:/ drive and it will still take you to our files. We just brought on a couple new people, and its like, everyone tells them to come to me in regards to the computers, and I can't even hook them up to the internet because it would give them access to our network, which in turn gives them access to our z:/ drive, which contains every file our company has.

I have a little small network created with 6 computers. 5 of them are windows xp home and pro. jsut bought a new laptop with windows 7 64 bit home pre. All the xp laptops can share files easily but the windows 7 is giving me a really hard time.

I have attached two JPG files in which i have tried my best to show the network diagram and how i want to share the files and folders. All the PCs are connected and i have made one Windows 7 Ultimate PC acting as File Server keeping its D Drive in sharing with other five Windows 7 Ultimate PCs acting as clients. I just want to know how to protect Files as per my requirement. There are no fixed PC of any dept users. All the users or Dept Head use any PCs as per availability.

Jul 19, 2011Before I moved home I had one netgear router supplied by virgin media. On my home network I had my pc sharing it's printer and also some shared folders I.e. Music folder, my documents etc. Now I've moved I have had a new netgear box supplied by virgin media (which I call virgin media 7) which because of the shape of the building doesn't reach my bed room. To fix this I have had to connect my old netgear box (which I call virgin media 8) to the new one via 10m of CAT5e but now I can't access my shared printer or shared folders on my win xp pc which is connected to virgin media 7 via wireless if my vista laptop is connected to virgin media 8. I have tried looking in the setting for the option that makes it just act as an wireless extention to vm7 but they have removed the menu from the settings.

I inserted a cd and clicked next but nothing happened. i tried clicking format button and it asked me to 'insert a cd to f drive' so I avoided the format button.My computer has a backup system which someone installed and im not too sure about it so I was wondering if f drive was referring to the backup system (sort of looks like an external hard drive with lights on it connected to modem) or maybe referring to usb port. I did not try using my usb yet. The second pc I noticed did not have network setup wizard on control panel and was not sure if i needed it. Apr 21, 2013Im on windows 7, I was able to view people on the network, able to access their public folders, but all of a sudden when I click on network, it just says at the top "Network Discovery and file sharing are turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible, Click to change..." I click on it and it doesn't do anything at all, same message comes on. SO i thought Ill change the settings, I see that Network Discovery is off so I turn them both on, save changes and then try again, same message appears, I go back to settings and see that they are switched off again, it doesn't stay on.
