Sharing :: Cannot See Other Computer
Aug 7, 2011
I am running a laptop (Windows 7) and a desktop (Windows XP SP3), with the laptop connected wirelessly and the desktop connected by ethernet cable to a Linksys modem / router. Both computers can always connect to the internet. The laptop can (almost always) print from the usb printer connected to the desktop. Only on about 30% of occasions can I see the other computer in Windows Explorer or the equivalent, and therefore cannot access all the files. I can usually ping the other computer by ip and get a reply. I can rarely ping the other computer successfully by name unless I ping by ip first.

connecting one computer to 10 others. In my office there are 11 computers, mine and 10 others. I was wondering what steps I would go about taking to ensure that while monitoring these computers, I could also if needed choose to close out of a program when I see it misused, or take control of it when necessary?

I support a dental office that just went in on an x-ray machine with two other offices. So, there is a total of three seperate offices each with their own Internet connection and each on a different ip scheme. They all want to be able to see the Win XP computer connected to this x-ray computer. Ideally, they would each want to be able to run their dental software on this computer.

I am trying to share a printer on Windows Server 2003 machine so that my other computers can access the print share from my server. originally i was hosting the print server from one of the workstations (running Windows XP SP2). I now want the printer share to be hosted from the server. I set up the printer correctly (to my knowledge). i was able to set it up and print a test page. But when i go into properties and attempt to share the printer, i click on Share this Printer and enter in a name, i designate it to list the printer in the directory. Then i click apply and ok... and nothing happens. the printer is not shared. When i go back into properties, it shows that i am not sharing the printer.

That is: that I have a slow general storage drive that is becoming full. A fast HDD for recording onto with fraps and for programs that I won't use with fraps. I then have an SSD as my main drive which gets VERY full VERY quickly. I then have another computer that has a pretty quick 1TB RAID 0 running and a gigabit network, the network being the bottleneck but still pretty damn quick (120MB/s which is plenty fast enough).
Now, what I intend to do is have my storage drive stay as is; my fraps drive to continue it's job, and then for my old computer to store my big programs to run off, things like games. Is it possible to do this as when I've tried it says I don't have permission even though I gave access to the whole HDD from the network. (I'm installing on this computer but changing to the mapped network drive for the install directory).

I am trying to transfer files from Laptop A to Laptop B. I can transfer files from B to A, but I can't transfer them from A to B. When I try to, I get an error message saying "Windows cannot access Laptop A".It then gives me the option to diagnose the problem (I'm using Vista on both laptops, by the way). When I click that, it gives me the error of "Cannot communicate with Laptop A. We pinged the remote host but did not receive a response".Laptop A is connected to the network according to it, it can access the internet fine and can access other laptops on the network fine. I have disabled the firewall, shared the folders appropriately, made sure they were both on the same workgroup (they are both on the default Vista WORKGROUP), and still nothing.

I have this idea of using my old computer (which is still pretty awesome) as a back up + production server. What this would entail would be that each person in my house has a dedicated hard drive that auto-syncs folders they've selected for backing up (not Memeo under any circumstances!). Then there will be a hard drive for me to work on web projects on. I'd like this computer to be very secure but if needed, I could show my work on the production drive to my boss.

My home network is all Windows 7 computers (4 total), and are Ultimates except for my laptop, which is Home Pro. So that's 3 computers with Ultimate and 1 with home pro. I have one computer (also Win 7 Ult.) that's my primary computer, the other 2 computers are mostly HTPC computers that I have set up to stream from my main computer.I do know how to set up Home groups for sharing files, but I could only set it up that there would be full access to the shares or no access at all. [For simplicity: My primary computer will be PC-1, the 2 HTPC's will be PC-2 and PC-3, and my laptop PC-4.]PC-1 will host all the files I want access to. PC-2 and PC-3 will access my music and videos folders for streaming. PC-4 which is my own personal laptop will have full access to shared folders that I DO NOT want being able to be accessed on PC-2 and PC-3.I have tried many and various types of ways to deny access from PC-2 and PC-3, where PC-4 would be allowed access to on my PC-1, but every time it's either all PC's get access or NO access to the shared folders. I also want to keep all my user accounts as admins.

I have a home network running all Mac computers (though can run Windows VM if necessary) and a pair of USB printers. The wireless router and cable modem are in one room, but the printers are in another. I'd like to find the most practical way to add the printers to the local wireless network without sharing them from a computer. I've tried that for a while, but don't want to leave a laptop connected 24/7 just to enable wireless printing (rather defeats the purpose of a portable computer). I don't have any wired network lines in the home, and am not excited by the idea of running any cables.

I wanted to setup a home network for primarily sharing my music, pictures and videos.I have a PS3 which can stream the video/music and display the pictures from a media server to my TV.I was wondering between NAS and a desktop computer? and wanted to know which was the better or cheaper solution? (2 much 2 ask for both)
Main Issues
--Will NAS work with PS3?
--Incase of a computer, i know i will be able to use logmein or gotomypc to Download files directly to that machine even when im not home and when i do get home its ready to go. Can the same be achieved with a NAS?What else should i consider? i.e. pros and cons of both.

Trying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems. I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password. Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '' or 'SYSTEMNAME' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

[code] Basically, we used to use Outlook for our customer management, but after I tried to design a custom form for customers that suited our needs better than Outlook's default form (i.e. we don't need state, country, region, etc. for each customer, and we'd prefer to have spots for Roof, Shingle, Shingle color, etc. in their place), we ended up turning OneNote into our new Customer Management System. Our problem is sharing files, and the security or lack thereof that goes along with it.We used to save all the files to a single computer, and use Windows 7 Home group to access them. That worked okay, but often we couldn't see the file-holding computer, and would have to disconnect/reconnect to the internet.
We recently bought a NAS HD, which actually works a lot better than I expected. Unfortunately, we've learned recently that new employees are not always the most trustworthy. So this is what we are trying to do:We want to set up some type of way for us to save, store, and access files, which allows us to keep track of who has done what (access, save, copy, delete, print, etc.), preferably one where we can set up alerts if certain things happen (i.e. someone copies and pastes the entire thing, or attempts to delete). We've run into the problem where, yes, we want people to be able to copy and paste certain documents, yes we want people to be able to print, but no we don't want someone to be able to print out our entire customer lists, current project lists, etc. This NAS HD (MyBook Live 2TB by Western Digital) could quite possibly have the most ridiculous set up I've ever encountered. I can set up accounts and passwords, but they are completely irrelevant because from "Computer" you can just select the z:/ drive and it will still take you to our files. We just brought on a couple new people, and its like, everyone tells them to come to me in regards to the computers, and I can't even hook them up to the internet because it would give them access to our network, which in turn gives them access to our z:/ drive, which contains every file our company has.

Before I moved home I had one netgear router supplied by virgin media. On my home network I had my pc sharing it's printer and also some shared folders I.e. Music folder, my documents etc. Now I've moved I have had a new netgear box supplied by virgin media (which I call virgin media 7) which because of the shape of the building doesn't reach my bed room. To fix this I have had to connect my old netgear box (which I call virgin media 8) to the new one via 10m of CAT5e but now I can't access my shared printer or shared folders on my win xp pc which is connected to virgin media 7 via wireless if my vista laptop is connected to virgin media 8. I have tried looking in the setting for the option that makes it just act as an wireless extention to vm7 but they have removed the menu from the settings.

recently i was trying to share files between two computers using a networking switch.(windows xp) I tried using network setup wizard on the host computer it only gave me two drive options f drive and the floppy disc drive. so i selected f drive to copy files. I inserted a cd and clicked next but nothing happened. i tried clicking format button and it asked me to 'insert a cd to f drive' so I avoided the format button. My computer has a backup system which someone installed and im not too sure about it so I was wondering if f drive was referring to the backup system (sort of looks like an external hard drive with lights on it connected to modem) or maybe referring to usb port. I did not try using my usb yet. The second pc I noticed did not have network setup wizard on control panel and was not sure if i needed it. I heard that a router has a firewall and is more safer than using a networking switch. at this stage i dont need internet connection for the second pc

Im on windows 7, I was able to view people on the network, able to access their public folders, but all of a sudden when I click on network, it just says at the top "Network Discovery and file sharing are turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible, Click to change..." I click on it and it doesn't do anything at all, same message comes on. SO i thought Ill change the settings, I see that Network Discovery is off so I turn them both on, save changes and then try again, same message appears, I go back to settings and see that they are switched off again, it doesn't stay on.
