I'm considering upgrading my home server to 2012 Essentials from WHS 2011. WHS 2011 has always been strangely finicky and I have a new Win8 laptop, so i would like to take advantage of the new options in Essentials.that said, I was looking to access my data on the WHS 2011 system to back IT up, and all I see are a bunch of 4,194,304kb .dat files. I've been lucky in that I have never had to recover data from the server, so this has been an interesting issue. how does one access the backed up files on a WHS2011 computer, short of doing some kind of restore?

We use a combination of Cisco ACS and Cisco catalyst 3560 switches for network authentication and authorization. Clients (Windows XP) have a certificate installed which will grand access to the network and put them in the correct VLAN. So far, so good. Some users are testing with Windows 7 in the same set-up as above and run into strange behaviour. The problem is that after a random timer the machine gets de-authenticated and nothing besides a reboot works to get the computer authenticated again (from a Windows point of view). It looks like this only happens to users who are using a certificate to authenticate, Windows 7 MAC bypass users have no such problems. If it occurs, the following logging appears in ACS: [code] We are using ACS 4.2(0) Build 124 and 3560-48PS switches with IOS 12.2(55).

I'm looking into a way of routing users internet connection based on their username or group in a windows environment. Currently there's two ISP connections with their own proxy server. I want a user to be fully redirected to one of the ISPs based on who they are. I was hoping via IE proxy settings, this can be accomplished, but it looks like the primary ISP connection, is still getting most of the connections/routing.

I am wondering if all routers that have a USB port to which network storage can be attached, support the functionality to enable that storage to be accessed from outside the network. If this is true how (in a conceptual sense) can the router be configured to do this and what are the security implications?

I live in an apartment where my internet is included in the rent. In all the rooms there is an ethernet socket buillt into the wall. I'd like to know how to connect a router to this for wireless internet. I have tried one router, but it buggers up the ip address and brings down the network for the entire apartment complex. I've done this twice now and don't fancy waiting another week for the technician to call out to reset things. I had a friend who lived in a simalar complex, rj45 sockets on the wall etc. He has a thomson router, which has a little black box plugged into the ethernet socket on the back of the router. Into this little black box goes the ethernet cable from the wall socket and bam, he has wireless internet, even though he has no access to the main router or switch of the apartment block. It's not failed once either. Both the router and the little black box need mains power.I think it was originally for a WIMAX connection. It's small, maybe 2"X3" inch?

1. the LAN network (multiple subnets) needs to access server 1(outside) - NAT translation works fine no issues
2. a subnet from the LAN e.g SUB-TEST currently acceses server1 but I need to change it to access TESTserver 2 (outside) instead (temporarily)
I dont want to change the original setup .I am trying to implement NAT on the local router such that
- any traffic from SUB-TEST that enters the inside interface and is going to Server1 then change the destination and NAT it to TESTServer 2
- all other LAN traffic is allowed to go to server 1.
i am using a 1941 router for this

I have been researching this for some time now and I can't find a solution to fit my needsI'm deployed in Afghanistan and on the base the local company they brought in has a hard wired network setup which makes you log in for internet. I want to setup wireless off of that with my own router and charge a smaller price. I know this sounds bad but they charge a pretty absurd amount. I would like to lessen that amount for the guys in my unit by splitting the price between everyone. I would like to make it look good though.
The login for the existing internet is a web based login. So, what I have come across so far is I need a router that will support logging into a web based login and support a landing page that will charge/ accept Paypal payments for new accounts and will expiredaily/weekly/monthly based on what they choose. I would like to set this up like you as a customer were loging in at a regular hot spot if that makes sense.

XYZ Corporation currently employs eight people but plans to hire 10 more in the next four months. Users will work on multiple projects, and only those users assigned to a project should have access to the project files. You’re instructed to set up the network to make it easy to manage and back up. Would you choose a peer-to-peer network, a server-based network, or a combination of both?

Our ISP has set up a Cisco 2431-16fxs IAD (dual WAN) in one of our locations. It is used to connect the devices (PCs and SIP phones) on our LAN to internet (via 1st WAN port) and ISP's MPLS-based voip network (via 2nd WAN port).
We have 2 LAN subnets - the first subnet (PCs) requires internet access only, so it goes out via the 1st WAN port. The 2nd subnet (SIP phones) is connected the MPLS network (via 2nd WAN port).
We would like to have the SIP phones (that connects to MPLS-based network 192.168.1.x) to be able to access the internet. Is it possible to configure the IAD so that the phones are routed based on destination network; i.e. anything to 192.168.1.x via 2nd WAN port, anything else to the internet via the 1st WAN port?

I work at a hospital and one of our department uses specialized software created by Varian Medical Systems. It has been brought to my attention that one of those applications has trouble opening during the day. I had the users demonstrate the issue and from what they explained to they are supposed to be able to open the application, log in, and be presented with a list of radiology images to choose from. Unfortunately, during the day this fails often and they have to try 3 or 4 times before it actually works. It behaves differently after 4 pm, and seems to work after the 1st or 2nd time at that time of the day. According to what I've been told this has been an issue as long as they can remember.
Varian has told me that they have done a number of things on their side to rule out their software and they think it is a network issue. We used Solar winds Engineer's Tool set (specifically the Network Performance Monitor) to monitor their switch and it is reporting no errors and the utilization graphs show that the ports involved have very little utilization. The most heavily utilized port is hovering between 10 and 5 person (Fa0/40). I've included a network diagram, but basically we have 1 10/100 Cisco 3350 switch (c3550-ipservices-mz.122-25.SEB4.bin), 4 clients, and 2 servers involved. They all are connected to the same switch at A-Full/A-100mbps. Although the Network Performance Monitor doesn't show any errors or over utilizaton of the ports in the the CLI I do see 35 output buffer failures and 35 under runs on the port connected to one of the servers (Fa0/40). They were a little higher and I cleared them about two weeks ago and then rebooted the switch, because I found that it could alleviate these types of errors.
They say the software use ports 5000, 55000, 55010, and 55020. We tried a packet capture, but I didn't have enough experience/knowledge to get anything useful out of it. I also checked the event logs on the clients and servers and nothing there indicates a issue in the software. They want us to replace the switch with a gigabit switch, but we have a REALLY limited budget and I would rather not if it isn't necessary. What I could try in order to rule out the network?

This past weekend I went out of town and took my Windows 7 laptop with me -- since I returned home, it has been unable to connect to my wireless network. Other devices in my home connect to the network just fine, and the problem laptop has always been fine until now. My network card is an Atheros AR9285, and I'm attempting to connect to a Medialink router with WPA password protection and AES encryption. My wireless network icon in the task bar has a yellow sign with an exclamation point in it. It says "No Internet access."

I have an old XP machine with many useful but obsolete programs and history.I have a new Win 7 HP (home premium) HP Slimline.I have a KVM switch allowing me to control each independently through one keyboard and mouse.I have several external drives, DVD drives and a wireless mouse hooked to the W7 by USB.Each computer is wireless connected to Internet via a Verizon MIFI2200 (essentially a G3 mobil phone).I have no other suitable optioons for internet available in my rural area.I ran the network setup wizard on the XP and saved a copy to thumb drive problems:
1. The W7 computer won't recognise the setup.
2. The XP doesn't show the network I set up although no errors showed up.
3. Win 7 has removed any wizard and other programs from HOME PREM for setup a network.
4. I attempted to set up the W7 manually but it refused too alllow both computers to independently use the MIFI2200.I find all hardware works fine the way I now have iit configured, but I want to move files from old to new PC and I need printer sharing until I get organized. I also need access to an external drive to backup files and general storage from both compputers.

I have Windows 7 running on my laptop and XP running on my desktop and I am trying to Network both PC's. I have carefully followed the instructions at the following site http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...dows-7-and-xp/ and Network discovery has been 'turned on' on my laptop but when I go to 'Network' on my laptop I cannot see the desktop XP PC. Is it first necessary for me to set up a login password for the desktop XP PC to see the PC on the Network, from the instructions I thought this was only necessary for the Network to remain enabled ie when PC's are restarted?

Last week my laptop would connect to the wifi just fine but just a couple of days ago when ever I try to connect it to the wifi it just gives me the "windows cannot connect to network" error message almost immediately. What really stumps me is that the three iPads (school provided) in my house and my sisters laptop all connect to the wifi but my laptop It may have something to do with the fact that I started a homegroup so I could print stuff from my laptop and that the password for the router was changed to something easy a couple of days ago by my sister to make it easier to connect from her iPad?

I'm staying with friends who have a router connected to their modem, which is connected to a computer.Three other computers connect remotely via wireless, including mine, which is the farthest from the connection. I have a so-so USB wireless that gets the job done, but isn't anything special. This morning I came home to find my connection was very laggy and spotty. I rebooted the modem and router, which reduced me to no internet connection at all. I removed the adapter, plugged it back in, then rebooted. Nothing. Since then, I've reinstalled the adapter's software twice, gone into safe mode and back out, have verified the USB port is working, and removed the device from device manager. And I've seen everything on my status from the yellow yield sign to the unplugged icon symbolizing no adapter period, even when the adapter is plugged in.All other computers have access but mine. Just before writing this, I remove the connection settings and reentered them. The connection asks me for the key, I put it in, and receive "Windows could not connect to <the network>. I receive that even if I intentionally put the key in wrong. No "key is incorrect" or "please reeneter" just "windows could not connect." My wireless adapter's settings verify that there is signal. There was a thunder storm today, and I'm mentioning it, but feel insofar as my computer is concerned, it may be a red herring.
I am at a complete loss. There's signal. The usb adapter's software has been reinstalled, and it's attempting to connect. I think the fact that it's not giving me any response about the key being incorrect may be the key to this solution, but I am at a loss.My friends insist that no changes have been made to the router or modem other than my resetting them.In the time between writing this and posting it, I unplugged my wireless adapter from the computer with the ailing connection, and went to another computer to continue researching. When I came back and plugged the adapter back in, it connected immediately for about 15 seconds and gave me just enough time to visit my home page (which updates regularly, so I know it wasn't a cache), then fizzled. Then the internet went to zero bars. I disconnected, reconnected, and got limited connectivity with the yield sign. I used the repair tool and got that orange "flame(?)" in front of the connectivity bars and hovering over it yielded "connections are available. Not connected." When I tried to connect again, I received the previous "Windows could not connect to <network>." Rebooted again and saw the yellow yield sign. Then red flame. Then windows cannot connect.

Desktop: Dell, WinXP Pro SP3, wired to network Laptop 1: Lenovo T43p, WinXP Pro SP3, both wired & wireless options (usually use wireless) Laptop 2: Dell, WinXP Pro SP3, ditto above
**All machines are running Norton 360, but even when I turn off the firewall, they're not accessible.
Internet: DSL modem Router: Cisco E3000 Printers: HP LaserJet 4 on desktop LPT1
HP Color LaserJet 2840 All-in-one on network
Then I want to add my new Lenovo T420 laptop (Win7 Pro SP1 x64) (I do have all machines in the same workgroup.
