Wireless :: 2nd Wireless In Same House Slows Internet?
Mar 12, 2011
I have had a wireless network set up in my 2-level home. There is one cable connection to the house. My roommate has set up a separate wireless (WPA) on the lower level..without coordinating with me. Could this cause technical difficulties for connecting to or speed in surfing the internet?

Why my internet was so slow .90mbps. They got on my mac and changed the Ethernet setting to "manually" instead of "Automatic", then changed the speed to 10mbps instead of "autoselect". Now the internet is going at the 10mbps im supposed to be getting, but when i plug it into my router (wall>router>laptop) i get the .90mbps again. So do i how do i change the same setting on the router?

Facing some troubles with my internet speeds, firstly the set-up is very simple, its just about 4 devices connected to a regular home router, 2 devices are connected via wireless and i am having trouble with my desktop PC.
Basically what keeps happening is that it fluctuates between 10Mb/s and as low as 0.8Mb/s, right now its at about 4Mb/s but i cant understand why this keeps happening, I am using a G wireless USB NIC and the laptop (the other wireless device) is fairly new so it should be an N wireless NIC, also it doesn't change my speed when it is being used for browsing and my neighbors wireless devices are also laptops with N cards. I believe that the router is G, having 3Mb/s at best which is far worse than normal.

At around 2:30 PM each day, the internet slows down, and it says its connected but with limited access. A few minutes later, it gets full connection again, but it is super slow, then the same cycle starts over again. It stops happening around 8:00 PM.

I have FiOS and their supplied wireless router Actiontec #: MI424WR. I have equipment that uses the newer N signal so I purchased a Linksys E3000 Wireless-N Router. This is working great for my wireless home theater equipment but I am having problems with my wired speed. It has gone from 20 to 30 mbps to around 10 mbps. I have one of the LAN outputs on the Actiontec feeding the Linksys input, I have my computers plugged directly into the Linksys verses the Actiontec. This makes it easier to program the Linksys router. Since I am no longer using the wireless part of the Actiontec there really is no need to be plugged into it. Is there anything I can do get my speed back or will I have to plug the computer back into the Actiontec and move it every time I may need to make a change to the Linksys

Recently my wirless computer has been loading web pages extremely slow. When I download anything the download speed will start at around 2Mbps and then within second drop to 1Mbps then so on untill it's showing a download speed of bytes. Not kilobytes but just the b. Then int will hang up and the download will fail. Sometime resetting the adapter will allow me another failed attempt to download it. Ive reset the router reinstalled the operating system (was due for a fresh install anyway). Still nothing. Adapter shows connection to the router with 4/5 bars and through to the Internet.

Often (almost always) , when i am connected to wifi via my linksys wireless n PCI e card, speeds are suuuuper slow, and it even causes my computer speeds to slow down (mouse tweaks and glitches, loading bars will stop and start spinning.. etc. almost like low RAM problem?).When i disconnect from wifi, the slow computer problem goes away.I have replaced the wifi card since i thought that was the problem. Although the problem came back.I am currently using a USB wireless N adapter, and i have one bar connectivity, and it runs 100x faster than my PCI card. OH AND ALSO: a few times i have been using m,y desktop with super slow speeds on the PCI card, and i connect on my PS3 or laptop and open a web page. SOMETIMES it will affect something, and my desktop will start running with network speeds again. It's almost like the other devices re-set something in the router?

my dad wants me to get on expanding our home network (getting wireless into other places in the house). i do consider myself pretty tech savvy ( i just built my computer from scratch) but this is a little bit beyond my comfort zone. the 4 ports on the router are keeping me tied up and the size and layout of the house are restricting the wireless range
provider: comcast cable
modem: arris TM502G (comcast provided)
router: linksys wireless-n wrt160n v3
4 pcs running windows xp to windows 7
3 laptops running xindows xp, windows 7 and windows 7 starter (netbook)
1 xbox 360
1 ps3
(looking to add netflix capable bluray players on 2 tvs in the future)
the downstairs layout (router is the star)
the upstairs (red is range of current setup thats a stretch) (blue wanted coverage)
not to scale and a quick draw the top half of the house is off set from the basement area. i used google earth to estimate the range from the router to the outside area of my wanted coverage area and its roughly 80 feet through 4 walls and the flooring i do not believe theres a single router capable of doing that without dropping some serious cash down.as is all the ports are currently tied up, and id like to expand the number of ports, along with getting wireless to the area i pointed out, i have the capability of pulling hard wire through out the house also.

problem is that my internet traffic slows down to a stop after 5 minutes or so of activity. It is not a complete stop, sometimes I may get a tiny burst of traffic after 2 minutes or more of inactivity. I am connected via an ADSL wireless routerOther computers on the (windows workgroup) network do NOT have this problem. I am able to communicate normally with other local network computers. I am using Windows XP SP3, there are also Windows 7 computers on the local network[CODE]

I have a Zoom 5350 Cable modem/wireless router. When I'm using uTorrent on a wired connection, and DHT is updating, my internet surfing is inaccessible for like 2-3 mins. This is even when I have no DL or UL going. It's really frustrating.
I have a Motorola modem that I tested on and it's fine with the DHT thing. Seems like maybe a setting in the Zoom 5350 is causing a slow down?
I'm getting rid of this modem/router soon. I'm just going to run a cisco e900 with my motorola modem, but I still would like to know if this is a common problem and what possible remedies there are..

Randomly the internet connection for either my, my son's , or my husband's pc drops. This also can happen with the X-box. The router lights indicate it is working and the rest of the connections will be fine just randomly any one of ours will fail until we reset the router. Two of the pc's are wired, one is on a plug (devlo) and the xbox is wireless. I phoned BT, our isp, who sent an engineer out. It turned out the BT rep told the engineer I had reported no dial tone on my phone line and if I had allowed them to investgate this fictitious fault it would have cost me £150 for a call out.

My DIR-601 router with 1.02NA firmware When the wireless is activated and not in use by any device (as shown in the wireless status) I experience major and gradual slowdown of my DL/UL speeds and ping. When I deactivate wireless the problem is solved even though no device was using the wireless at the time of the slowdown. I've tried resetting, reverting to factory defaults, updating the firmware(was already up to date), unplugging the router for a considerable amount of time (2hours+). Even though it's not quite related I've tried connecting directly to the modem just for thoroughness' sake.

We have Cisco ASA 5510 256RAM running 8.2.4 with CSC 6.3.1172.4, it slows down internet traffics drastically when we do speed test, we get something like this, It the computer is bypassing the CSC, it gets This was done when there's very low traffic on the LAN and CPU is low usage on the CSC. The CSC has been re-imaged also but still doesn't solve the problem.

I have a mysterious problem with my Internet connection. The Edge topology is in the attachment so are the most important "show" commands. We have a 50Mb/s symmetric Internet connection. When we use Internet through ASA the download speed does not exceed 3Mb/s whereas the upstream is at about 45Mb/s. When we connect our LAN directly to 2960 the downstream increases dramatically up to 47Mb/s whereas the upstream remains at about 45Mb/s. Duplex is manually set to 1000/full on all interfaces. All that I have noticed are dropped packets on outside interface (Gi0/0). The reason is unclear.

Whenever my Raspberry Pi is connected to the network (via ethernet) the entire network is slowed to a crawl. On my main computer, ping times for google.com go from ~10ms to ~200ms and it takes forever to load web pages. Connections are also slow on the Pi, with an apt-get update showing pathetic speeds in the order of 1KB/s. Turning off the Pi completely removes the drag from the network. Interestingly, the local network appears to be fine, with scp copying files at reasonable rates; around 4.5MB/s to the Pi.
I've tried static and dynamic IP addresses for the Pi, but both have the same problems. Switching from Raspbian to Arch also had no effect.I've checked the connection's duplex with dmesg | grep -i duplex, which shows that the Pi's connection is running at 100Mbps, full-duplex, as expected.
My modem/router is a Billion 7404VNPX (an Australian thing); relatively high-end, albeit a bit buggy at times (it will occasionally delete all its firewall settings). It assigns IPs in the range 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.20 and has 192.168.1.254 as its own IP. When I assign static IPs I tend to use the 192.168.1.200 area. I recently tested the connection with the Pi plugged straight into the modem (rather than via a wall socket) and it managed to crash it entirely!

yesterday at 6:30 am my internet was working fine.yesterday at 7am it quits working.the computers through the house are 2 desktop PC's, one netbook, and one laptop.the 2 pc's connect to the router via a switch.the netbook and laptop use the wireless router.the wireless router is not specifically just a wireless router, it goes both ways (hardline and wireless)after 7am, the netbook still had connectivity to the internet via wireless even though my laptop did not.the internet is still connected to all of them, browsers like google chrome, firefox, and IE7 do not work. but just like a browser, steam's store will not load.here's the funny part, the netbook still had browsing ability until 7pm last night.we checked all the ip's and MAC addresses on the computers to make sure nothing was conflicting.nothing was.packets were coming in and out at normal rate but none of our browsers worked.we do have comcast, and my father told me that comcast gives you norton for free for using them.i have read on here that removing norton magically solves the problem but 3 of the 4 computers does not run norton. and i also do not see the logic behind this.we have also recieved emails from comcast exclaiming that they have reports of "bot emails" coming from our I.P.'s could this have been an attack on our network or some network virus?

Ever since I started using iPads at the house I have had to reboot the router about once a week because the download speeds drops by approximately 90%. As soon as the reboot completes all is right with the world for about another week. During the course of the week, but not all at once, we will have 4 iPads, 3 iPhones, 2 laptops and one desktop(wired), a Verizon signal booster and house guests. I have updated the firmware.

I am trying to brainstorm some ideas for the best wireless set up in a house that is 2 stories and 8500 SQ Feet. The house is wired with ethernet jacks.
Option 1. ASUS RT-N66U and Hawking Hi-Gain HWREN1
Option 2. Two Apple Airport Extreme's at either end of the house.
Option 3. Asus RT-N66U and Linksys WRT54G (DD-WRT Firmware).
What about the placement of the equipment? Should there be one router/access point on each floor or just two at either end of the house.

I used to use a DSL modem/router supplied by Bell (my ISP) and it was a 2wire router, but the signal was not enough to supply my entire house, it was 802.11b/g.Now recently I bought a Tenda W307R, N router all-in-one with an AP.I just plugged it right into the 2wire (modem) and now the Tenda routes the wireless signal. However, I am experiencing that it slows down every few minutes or so, for 30 second intervals, then the internet catches on again and everything is good.

Recently I upgraded my Internet speed at the ISP from 10Mbps to 25Mbps and the problem is that I am measuring only 15Mbps using [URL]On the day when the tech came out to install the new DSL modem, he noticed the difference and as part of troubleshooting, he bypassed the Linksys router and voila the net speed measured 25Mbps using speedtest.net.So, why my Linksys WRVS4400N V1.1.13 acts like a bottleneck in this case? I didn't have this problem at the speed of 10Mbps. The upload speed is OK, it is 5Mbs with or without the DSL modem.

For a long time now whenever my home phone is answered my internet connection drops, it happened on my lenovo z575 laptop and i recently built a pc and now use a netgear n-300 wireless adapter and it still happens. I have BT infinity fibre optic broadband and previously had aol broadband and the problem happened with both providers. I was told by bt that it was the wireless adapter in my laptop that was not compatible with the router but that was clearly not correct. The internet drops when the phone is answered and sometimes when it is put back in the holder and sometimes just when it is rung.
