Most likely I will not be able to move the modem or wireless router, so I have to somehow increase the range.I did some research and poking around on forums, but I can't find a clear cut, number 1. What you think would be the best option to pair with the DIR-655.

Do I have to hard wire both routers to use cascading routers technique? I've been reading up on how to do this, but have not yet quite tried. I know someone will say extender and/or repeater, but I want to know if I can use a second router to extend the wireless signal further; i.e., bounce it from modem/gateway/wireless router (dlink) to wireless router (linksys wrt160n) then to my laptop? I have to go from one building to another and currently the wireless signal is quite weak (hence, someone will likely say repeater/extender). I already have the linksys. The dlink belongs to someone else, but I have permission to access through their dlink. I can do the initial setup, connecting LAN (main router - dlink) to WAN (2nd router - linksys), but I cannot leave them connected.

Cisco haven't really supplied any documentation on how to work this.So far I've plugged in a hard drive and formatted it through the router's web interface, with no trouble at all. But, after doing this I have no idea how to access my hard drive on the network.I would assume that it would appear automatically on my network for me to access freely.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently just bought a Netcomm NP124 wireless extender as a computer on the other side of my house does not get within the range of my routers wireless. So i have opened the package and followed the step by step manual of how to set it up. it is as follows:
1. to initially set up the product we recommend you plug the NP124 into a power socket near both you existing router and computer (DONE successfully)
2. Plug the supplied Ethernet cable into your NP124 and connect the other end to the computer (DONE successfully)
*this is where the problem lies*
3. you can connect your devises through the web user interface. to open the web browser (internet explorer, Firefox, etc) and type 192.168.20.1 into the address bar and hit enter.
4. When prompted add in the username and password.
Before i keep going i must tell you that my desktop computer doesnt have wireless but my modem/router does so i connect my computer to my router via an ethernet cable. There are further steps but i cannot get past step 3. When i attempt to type the IP in the URL it says "problem loading page", "unable to connect". At all times my phone line is connected to my modem/router. These are the cable variations i have tried:
a) -ethernet from computer to NP124
-No ethernet connection from modem/router to computer
**this is the procedure outlines in the manual, does the manual assume i have a wireless connection
to the internet in my desktop?**
b) -ethernet from the computer to the modem/router
-ethernet from the NP 124 to the moder/router
c) now using an Ethernet hub:
-(ALL) NP124, modem/router and desktop connected to the hub at the same time
I cannot see why the IP does not connect, without this stage i cannot enter the wireless settings of the NP124. I have tested to see if other IP addresses work in the URL (eg the modems 192.168.1.1) and it works but the NP124 doesnt.
I have a wireless repeater (NETGEAR Universal Wifi Range Extender WN2000RPT) thats been giving me issues lately when attempting to use it to connect an xbox 360 I have to xbox live. The Xbox and the repeater are connected by an ethernet cable so there is no wireless connection going on between them. My router (Cisco WRVS4400N Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router with VPN) located in the basement of my house, and the extender is on the second floor of my house. The xbox that I want to connect to the internet is located on this second floor and because of the distance between it and my router a normal xbox wireless networking adapter doesn't seem to be working.Anyway, if I plug in the extender and let it get a connection, and use it right away to connect, i have no issues. The connection will also usually remain working for a while after I first get it working. The problem comes after I'm done using the xbox and i shut off the console and the tv. When I come back to the xbox later and turn it on, the networking extender still shows it has a full connection and is working properly on the outside with the green lights, but the xbox will not connect and it will tell me the extender is not assigning an IP automatically (DHCP turned off), when I know for a fact it is turned on. It is almost like the extender freezes after I leave it alone and on for a while. When this happens I usually unplug it and let it connect, and everything works as it should again. After a while its gotten a little annoying having to do this every time I need connection.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI started out with a wireless router/modem that my ISP provides as its default modem. It was and still is working fine. We will call this router A. My uncle who is living with me wasn't receiving the wifi signal in his room so he went and bought a different router that is supposed to have more range. Also, I believe it is capable of providing higher speeds wirelessly, but that is really irrelevant I think. We can call this new router B. I currently have router B running through router A with an ethernet cable into a LAN port- LAN port to LAN port. I basically want B to be a wireless range extender. My question is quite simple actually. I have everything up and running just fine, but it seems as if the wireless signal may still be coming from the old router A.

View 1 Replies View Relatedfind the IP address of the dLAN Wireless Extender so I can go into advanced settings to set up the name, password etc. The Extender config tool provided cannot find it.I replaced my cheap WiFi extender which used to drop the connection all the time with a Devolo dLAN 200 AV Wireless-N Starter Kit, which was highly praised all over the place. How I set it up. The manual clearly states both the single Etherner port plug and the 3-ethernet plug should be slotted directly into the mains sockets which I have done. The smaller, single ethernet plug connects to my Router with the ethernet cable provided. The bigger plug is plugged into a different socket without any other cables attached. The power, house(dLAN), ethernet lights are green on both as well as the Wifi light is green on the extender.I used the dLAN cockpit program to add the Extender by entering the security code on the back, now both of them show up in the Cockpit interface and say "ON". I have the option to change the password for the entire network via the Cockpit, which I did. I assumed that's all the plug & play I had to do to make it work. Wrong. I cannot connect wirelessly at all. The network shows in the available list as devolo-000.......... with full signal, I click it, enter the password, it says authenticating and then drops.
The whole purpose for this is to have an extended Wifi Network around the house where the router cannot reach. But I cannot connect. Now i was reading on Davolo site where it says " You can set up or change the configuration of the dLAN® 200 AV Wireless N via the web interface. To access this interface, simply enter the known IP address of the product into any web browser (e.g.Internet Explorer) or call up the web interface via the dLAN® Cockpit."I also checked that apparently, the newer version, the dLAN 500 has a "config" button in the Cockpit application which takes you directly to the web interface to set up your wifi, but the 200 does not. I do not know what the IP address of the Extender is, I do not know how to reach the interface via my browser. I did have a feeling it had to be done because firstly I wanted to change the name of the Wifi network but couldn't figure out where.
I would also like to add that a program included in the set-up disc, called dLAN Wireless Extender Configuration doesn't seem to find it, so I cannot enter to look at any settings. It pops up with "the dLAN wireless extender was not found. is the dLan wireless extender switched on and properly connected to this computer's local network?"
I currently have a sagem router provided by my isp (sky), as the signal does not reach all areas of my premesis and sky refuse to let me use my own router I decided to purchase a wireless extender. I got a Edimax EW-7416APn and configured it using the following settings at the following address:when I connect to the extender i can gain access to the management settings, if i perform a scan using the extender it can see the original router, if I check the security settings they hold the correct ssid, security type (wpa - tisk) and the correct passphrase.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently replaced my working WRVS4400N v2 Router with an RV180W. Unfortunately I am now stymied, as I am unable to use WDS to connect my WAP4410N to the RV180W to fill a dead spot. I tried calling support (case # 623405011) but we were unable to get communications working correctly - even when the two devices were less than 5 feet apart. The engineer's final suggestion wwas to put the WAP4410N bact to factory default, connect it to a laptop, and compare settings side-by-side...thats 2 hours of my life I will never get back as it was a useless endeavor. The WAP4410N is on 2.0.5.3, and the RV180W is on 1.0.1.9 (Both are on the latest available firmware).
My question would be what Cisco device would be best matched with this RV180W so I can use WDS and fill in the hole. I have no problem, just as long as it works and stays stable, as I had with the WRVS4400N / WAP4410N setup. Optionally, is there some other setting the engineer missed? The RV180W is my gateway router and primary wireless access point, I just need to fill some spaces where there is interference.
On instruction from reviews of the TV on amazon, i bought a TP-Link wireless range extender to set up as a client/repeater (not sure which to use) to connect wirelessly to my router in another room so i can connect an ethernet to the TV for online functions without an overpriced Sony wireless dongle.I connect the device to the router, assign a random IP in the same subnet as my lan (since it has the same default address as my router) and set the default gateway to my router's IP address (assuming this is what it is asking for) and set the device to either client or repeater mode (unsure of which i need so have tried both) and everything seems fine until this point. However, I set the device to WEP security and set the WEP key to the same as my router as the instructions say and my router instantly loses it's internet connection entirely and repeatedly tries to reconnect and fail until i disable WEP security on the wireless range extender, at which point it successfully reconnects.
