Why Do Wifi Routers Keep Dying
Oct 31, 2011
I moved recently to a rural area and chose to go with midwest-connections Speedwave wireless internet service rather than Hughesnet. Previously had cable ISP. Since moving 5 months ago, we have had 5 different hard failures of our routers. We've used Engenius, Belkin, netgear, all work for a month or so, then die. The ISP says the signal is good to my house, so it must be the router. The obvious question is whats taking them out? I have taken them to work and tried them, and they are truly failed.

My company just purchased this router for my home office for the purpose of connecting to multiple office locations.I put this router on my network at about 6pm, several machines connected to it and and were given IPs.About 5 hours later I powered up another machine and it would not get an IP address until I rebooted the router. This morning at about 5am I rebooted my SIP phone and it would not grab an IP either, not until I rebooted the router.

I've needed to power-cycle my router every 2 hours. Usually it can last 2 weeks before needing to power-cycle (a process I've done for the past 2 or 3 years). This actually happened before for me a couple of months ago, but I did a firmware update along with a reset, and it looked like everything went back to normal.
But last Saturday I had to power-cycle it twice, then it didn't have any problems all day Sunday. But yesterday it went back to needing to be power-cycle it every 2 hours. My computer is physically connected to the router and is working perfectly no problems at all. But my parents use the wireless for their PC and laptop, and I use it for my 360, PS3, and Wii, so having to power-cycle it every 2 hours would be a pain.
I was wondering if this is a sign of the wireless in my router dying and in need of a new one, or is there some possible fixes I can do in order to repair it.
Mixed Mode
Wireless Channel 1
No WPA (Something I'm planning on fixing)

I bought an e4200 about 2 months ago. It worked perfectly for 3 weeks. Then all of the sudden, the 5ghz connection started dropping. Then it's disappeared completely and it would not show up in a network search. Then the 2.4 ghz started going crazy. I reset it completely, that didn't work. I let it sit for half a day, nothing. I sent it back to newegg and got a replacement. When the 2nd one came in, it worked fine until the next day. 5ghz cut out. I called linksys support and they were no luck. I reflashed to 1001 firmware and it mysteriously came back to normal. It was working perfect until today. 3 weeks later. 5ghz went out, and never came back. I reflashed 1001, nothing. Reset, nothing. Flashed the new 1002 firmware, nothing. 2.4ghz still kind of works, but the speed is barely 5mbps. I'm at a freaking loss right now. This was the best performing router I have tried, of all the top models available right now

I need to replace a dying Netgear FWAG114 wireless router, and the E4200 gets good reviews so I've been looking into it. I'm a software developer running 6 servers plus 3 laptops and 5+ other devices (iPad, Wii, Droid phones, BluRay...). I prefer to use a trusted PC list (enter MACs for all trusted devices) rather than WEP or WPA - is this available with the E4200?
I don't need VPN, but I do run a number of web servers, app servers and databases, so port forwarding is important - I notice the E4200 provides port range forwarding and single port forwarding - I assume this replaces the Rules and Services feature in Netgear - right?
Do you see any potential problems, given my needs, in using the E4200?

Ive been through 5 routers. All of them, except ONE has had a very annoying problem. The WiFi disconnects like anything randomly. The funny thing: The 4 that disconnect have all been working on 802.11n 300mbps. The 802.11g DG834Gv5 is as solid as a rock, maintaining connection for months on end, no wireless dropouts. Ive tried fiddling with the 4 routers (DGN2200, DG834N, Belkin N1 Vision, and another one ive forgotten), putting them onto 54mbps, which always works perfectley. When its on 145mbps or 300, they disconnect. No pattern, just fall off. When reconnecting, I can see them in the network selection thingy, but it just gives me the error 'Cannot connect to XXXX', only solution is to turn off the wireless radio and turn it back on via router interface.

So I decided to reset a wifi router, I have done this many times before and each time the process was quite smooth. But those routers were different models. This particular one is quite something. I reset it and when I tried to connect back to the network it asked me for a security key! I have tried everything from admin, password, 12345, the old passwords it had.. nothing seems to work.It gives a 'limited connectivity' message and the diagnosis tool asks whether the security key is correct. And it only accepts five characters (alphanumeric)So obviously I cannot try the default IP in the browser to access its settings, I can't even connect to the router. Are there known routers that ask for a security key even after resetting?

I have an acer travelmate 5720 running windows vista. It seems to connect no problems to some wifi ie my home and a friends wifi but not to work wifi at two different work places. i try to connect and it simply says acquiring ip then fails. It then suggests resetting the routers which makes no idfference. Not sure what to do. Can it be set just to connect to one home wifi without me knowing.

I just moved into an apartment where the internet is being provided to me via wifi (open). The landlord doesn't have a private network, he is with me. What I'm was curious about is if it is possible for me to use a second router to create a secured network for all my devices? My thought would look like this: ISP>Landlords Router>wireless>MyRouter. I know you can have private and public wifi but the two routers have to be connected. I haven't talked to him about the fact that he needs to secure his router mainly because we never cross paths.

I have two wifi routers which I have connected together with an ethernet cable to extend coverage across my house. The ethernet cable is connected to a LAN port on the first router and the internet port of the second router. This works fine and creates a second network that I can connect to the net on. The problem iseemingly randomly, about every 15 minutes, the second router will lose internet connection. My laptops and phone still stay connected to it, but windows lists it as having no internet connection. If I then wait a couple of minutes and reconnect, internet will be working again.
