Add A Link To Our File Server On Network?
Jan 30, 2012
I am looking to the best way to add a link to our File server on our network. We have a win 2008 r2 server set up to share a directory for network storage. The storage server has a static IP and the way we access it now it so go to RUN and input "//servername" and it pops up the directory in Win Explorer. This has worked fine but now we are building an Intranet and I need a way to link the Data Storage on the Intranet site.

url...I have 2 PC's connected to a DIR-615 through 802.11n and each have a DWA-130 802.11n adapter. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on both computers. The specs of both systems are very high.I only have these 2 computers on wireless right now. Their signal is full strength, they are less than 10 feet away from the router.I am getting 2.0 MB/s when transferring files between them and although I am not expecting to get 17MB/s, but I should be getting better speed than 2 MB/s.Hard drive specs are Crucial C300 SATA 6.0, WD Caviar Blue SATA 3.0, and WD Caviar Green SATA 3.0. My Green drive reads/writes at 100MB/s, My Blue 125MB/s, and My SSD 225MB/s. So, those are not the bottleneck. Is there any other settings I can try? I have not messed with my DWA-130 settings nor have I messed with Windows.

I have been trying to get this setup for 2 days now and so far NADA.....
Router: Linksys E3000 - below is a list of all devices connected (hardwired T568B) to the 4 ports with a laptop connected via wireless
1. Main PC - motherboard: ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z (dual GB LAN ports)
2. Media Server - motherboard: MSI Z68A-GD80 (dual GB LAN ports)
3. Test Bench AMD PC
4. WD TV Live
Currently: I have all 3 computers running Windows 7 and connected to a Homegroup. I have given the correct permissions to enable sharing of files between each of the 3 computers and can transfer files from one PC to the next w/o any issues.
Desired: I want to connect my Main PC and Media Sever with a crossover cable using the 2nd LAN port on each motherboard, so that I don't have to go through the router to transfer data to and from these 2 PCs. I will have each PC also connected to the Linksys E3000 router via the 1st LAN port on each motherboard to supply the internet connection, so I am also not trying to "share" an internet connection between these 2 PCs. Basically, I want to run my home network through the Linksys E3000 and then a 2nd network for the 2 PCs using the crossover cable.
Current Problem: I disconnected the straight-through cables from the router to each computer from the 1st LAN port. I then connected the crossover cable from the Main PC to the Media Server and setup a new Home network in the Network and Sharing Center in Windows 7. Everything worked and I could transfer data to and from each these 2 PCs, so i know I wired the crossover cable correctly. Then I reconnected the straight-through cables coming from the router to the 1st LAN ports of each mobo, thinking that each PC would auto-detect the internet connection and reacquire my existing home network, enabling an internet connection again. However, this did not happen.
[URL] I also followed this how-to guide on microsoft.com, but when I get to Step 3 where it says that an "Unidentified network icon" will aprear in the Network and Sharing Center, it does not!
From Googling, reading, and troubleshooting I believe I know 2 things:
1. All of the hardware is functioning properly - when the straight-through cables from the router are disconnected, the 2 PCs are networked through the crossover cable and files can be transferred.
2. The problem is with Windows 7 somewhere - I think?

I have setup a webserver on my home PC and I have forwarded port 80 on my router to the IP adress of the PC that is running the web server. The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

I am having linking a computer to our SBS server. The computer in question is set in a warehouse on our site. We have a leased internet connection which is used on a number of different offices. The sbs-server has an IP address of 192.168.50.254 with a gateway Ip address of 192.168.50.1. The firewall on this network has an external IP of 10.50.0.37 with a gateway of 10.50.0.254 and this links to the leased line equipment. The external IP address for this network is 62.7.70.237. The PC in the warehouse has an IP address of 192.168.0.2 attached via a router to the leased line. The routers Ip address is 192.168.0.1, the external IP address is 10.50.0.55 and a gateway of 10.50.0.254. This links to the leased line and seems to have an external Ip address of 62.7.70.238. My issue is that I want the PC in the warehouse to be able to connect in some way to the SBS-Server. I cannot seem to access it via the external IP or the gateway (10.50.0.37).

What do I need (OS, softwares, etc)How do I secure the internet and distribute it to the rest.witch, router, etc)

I have a Nas4Free (FreeBSD) server on location A and another Nas4Free server on location B.
I need to regulary access to location B's some folder from Windows machine at location A. What is the best scenario for this?
I think to rsync those folders/files every night to location A, but then I think what if in the future there are many other locations (C, D, E, F) that need to be rsynced to location A, that will make location A need a very large harddisk space that maybe not available in the market or limit
by the hardware/BIOS support.

I've got this problem about accessing a file server in my work office.
First, I used to have a desktop PC connected via ethernet cable to a wireless router (there's only one connection in this office but there are two of us, so we set up a router), and I was able to acces the file server by typing "\SERVERNAME" in the RUN command windows. I brought my laptop and I connected it to the router via wireless. After I tried accessing the server the same way I used to (typing "\SERVERNAME") but I got the "Windows cannot acces \servername". Well, I said, I'll try by connecting via ethernet cable, but I couldn't connect either. The only way I can access is by disconnecting the internet cable off the router and plugging it in my laptop's ethernet port. But the issue is that we've only got one connection and some other people connect wirelessly too. I can't understand why if connecting an ethernet cable to the router's LAN port, I was able to access the server from my desktop computer but when I tried the same way from my laptop I could not.Internet connection works fine in my laptop. Networks settings are ok i think. My laptop has Windows 7 and my desktop has Win XP.

So I have a proxy server in my home that all the computers use to access the internet (XP Pro). I edited the host file on the proxy to redirect traffic for various reasons (ad blocking, etc.) But I have noticed that it doesn't seem to affect the computers that use the proxy. For example one entry in the host file could be 127.0.0.1 abc123.com so that abc123.com would loopback to the localhost. For some reason this isn't working. Is there anyway to get this to work without changing the host file on each individual computer?

I would like to set up a home server, that will sit under the stairs so that it can link to out BT home hub (v3). The idea is then to connect the printer to it, so that we can have both a wireless printer and a central file store for pictures/vids etc.Is XP ok for this? if so, what settings do I need to change/add?Is there any software that I need to make it work? How do I make sure that it is secure for external hacking? As it will contain our personal docs/photos etc and I would hate to use them.

I am trying to connect my file server to my desktop and laptop through a workgroup, however while my Laptop and desktop recognize each other, they will not recognize the file server. I have tried what I can including setting firewall exceptions and even disabling it and nothing will change. Both the file server and desktop run Windows XP SP3 while the laptop runs Windows 7 Home Premium. the file server is connected to a 5-port router which is then connected to a 10-port hub that is connected to the gateway, while the laptop and desktop are connected to a different 5-port router which is connected to the same 10-port hub. I am saying thing also because I think it is a hardware problem since the laptop/desktop can connect perfectly as they are on the same router.

I have been having a number of different problems (Java not being able to start, polling jobs not being able to add devices, etc) and am wondering if the root cause could be a rights issue on my server. I have installed LMS (which was an upgrade from 3.x to 4.0 on one box and then 4.0 to 4.1 on a different box). The software is installed on a D: drive with C: as the OS drive. My understanding is that causer and local admins need full rights to the entire file structure of ..program filesciscoworks directory... and I am wondering if there are other locations that need additional access.

Domain support with these operating systems seems to be hit and miss.I have 11 computers connected to a domain and I was wondering what the best way to back up the files on the workstations to the server would be. The server has a mirrored raid array and online backup as well. Just checking to see what the best way to do this would be. I am having trouble with the offline files sync / online files sync with these operating systems.

I have a sg300-52 in layer 3 mode. I have 2 Dell access switches that connect to the sg300 in 4 port LAGs each. Connectivity works as expected.Servers are on their own VLAN, and plugged directly into the sg300. When somebody starts a file copy from their client workstation off a file server, the server VLAN drops everything except for the file copy. Even drops packets on its own vlan, (server to server communication) until the file copy is complete. Seems like the VLAN is rate limited somehow.

The original file was a PCKS12 file that was converted to a set of .PEM files as I have no access to any server to do a file transfer. This has worked in the past. the error I get is "Error: File not of recognized types - PEM, DER or PKCS12, import failed". I am not sure what is exactly failing. The cert was converted to a .PEM and the ACE imported that fine.

Some other ones connect via the linkseys wireless router. All computers are able to connect to the Internet. The problem I have is that I will be setting up a home computer as a file server connected to the Motorola router. The network acts as though it is two meaning that computers on one router can't see computers on the other router. What steps should I take in order to make all computers accessible through both routers. When I type 192.168.1.1 from a computer on the Motorola router, I get nothing, when I type in my actual ip address, I get the Motorola router. When I type in 192.168.1.1 from a linkseys connected computer, I get access to the linkseys router.

I can't seem to figure out which one I should go for. I'm thinking Kaspersky would have greater security but I'm not familiar with AVG's server level security.I don't need all the bells and whistles such as file encryption or password storage. I'm simply after a really strong AV for the server. Another one is VIPRE although I've heard it can take a while to configure it unlike Kaspersky which is pretty straight forward.
