Adding Wireless To Internet Provided By Building Owners

May 2, 2012

We are leasing an office space from a building that has it's own network center. This center can be used by each office/company to either house their own networking solutions or utilize their internet access if you plan only to use cloud servers or NAS servers. Our company (4 employees) is using this network center only for internet access with all of our data stored and accessed in our cloud service. We would like to access the internet wirelessly, which building does not provide. We were given one port and shared the link through the use of a switch. So my questions is would an access point add wireless connectivity without any information (ISP?) provided by the network center? I am not sure yet if we will be purchasing a router/AP or device made for to be used as an AP.

Can't Connect To Apartment Provided Internet

Aug 23, 2012

I recently moved into a new apartment complex where Internet is included with the rent, meaning that I do not have a personal Internet connection. Instead, the apartment company has a general connection along with a router on each floor of the complex. They then wire out from that connection to an ethernet port in each apartment. Because of that, calling the Internet company doesn't work because they can only tell me that the router on my floor is getting an Internet connection (and unfortunately my apartment is too far away from that router to have signal strength to use it for wireless). Most tenants plug their personal routers into the ethernet ports and use them for wireless connection within their apartments.

When I try to plug my router in, I cannot connect. I get an error message saying that there is no Internet connection. When I plug my Mac directly into the ethernet port, I still get no Internet connection. I've even tried plugging my netbook (PC) in, and get nothing. I have tried network diagnostics, I have used multiple ethernet cables, nothing. The previous tenant apparently plugged her router into the same ethernet jack I am using and had no problems. She has been gone for a few months, and now I cannot connect.

Whole Building Wants To Share The Internet Connection?

Mar 9, 2011

I am a novice to networking. I have a Internet Modem in the basement and two floors of computers. Each floor has its own wired ethernet network that has one wire in the middle of the network reaching down to the basement. The whole building wants to share the internet connection. What devices do you suggest for the basement and for each "hub" on the other floors?Originally we planned to put a router in the basement and share a wifi signal and put an ethernet switch on each floor. But the wifi in the basement has less range than placing the wifi on the top floor. I was contemplating puting a wired router in the basement and a wireless router on the top floor. Will that work?If not we could have wireless routers on each floor, but will they cause interference with each other? Can one be set in the basement to operate on one channel, while the other set on the top floor to operate on another channel?

No Internet Connection At Home But Can Connect In Different Building

Jan 14, 2013

We had 2 laptops and a pc working through a router with no internet problems. My wife's Toshiba laptop had other problems so IT guy at the college where I teach did a clean install of XP and checked the machine in his office, including internet. No problem. Brought machine home and no internet connection. My laptop works fine on wife's cable to the router. Wife's Toshiba has wireless but cannot establish connection with wire.Another tech guy who lives above us took the laptop up to his place - no connection. Back in the office (different building)- connection. The IT men are baffled. Me too.

Can't Afford Getting Business Internet In Church Building

May 19, 2011

I am doing some work for my church, but we can't afford getting "business" internet in the church building, $200/month.. but we can afford the residential package.. only problem is that "the man" lol, has to put it in the house at the back end of the property, so there is about 200' of clear line of sight between the main building and this house. We are going to put a software based voip pbx in the house to convert the analog tel. lines in to the network, and we were looking at the url.. but I thought we could go with 2 wifi n access points, and 2 14dbi panel antennas, and save a couple hundred bucks..

TP-Link ADSL2+ Wireless :: TD-W8950ND Modem Router To Stop Dhcp / Dns Provided By Device

Apr 9, 2013

Region : Australia
Model : TD-W8950ND
Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : 1.2.9 build 110212 Rel.22296n

I made some changes on my wireless modem router to stop dhcp and dns provided by my device. A server is now doing it, but at the same time I appear to have connection issues where I didn't before. In an attempt to resolve the issues I looked at the System Log and a number of things were coming up that concerned me. These are as follows:

-user: tr69c: Unable to retrieve attributes in scratch PAD

-user: Stored Parameter Attribute data is corrupt or missing

Additionally I'm getting a lot of kernel: Intrusion alerts which I can't determine how serious they are. Where to start tracking down these issues (if they even warrant investigation).

Adding Wireless Without The Internet?

We have an inner office wired system that we do NOT want connected to the internet. Right now we have a 20 port either switch or router (not sure which one). We want to add another computer, but can not run the ethernet wires to this location so we wanted to find out if we just need to plug in a wireless router to the router/switch that is there to give that computer access to our office network. We do not have or need internet...we just need to be able to share a networked program both wired and wirelessly.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E2000 - Slow Internet After Adding It

Jul 24, 2012

I recently bought a E2000 wireless router. After my internet was slow for a few days, I figured out that the router was slowing down my internet.

Here's what happens: When my PC is connected directly to the cable (I am connected to a university network, so no modem), everything is fine and a speed test (url...) shows the speed as 400 Mbps(200 Mbps upload) or more.Once I add the router and connect my PC through the router, the speed test result drops to less than 200 Mbps(100 Mbps for upload). I tried this several times, testing with the same server. At the same time, when I try to open pages, "Sending request"(Chrome) takes for ever! sometimes it stays at "Sending request" for 15 seconds. This happens even google.com, so it's not the Web server.

Building A Wireless Network For 130+ Users?

Apr 8, 2011

designing a wireless network for an apartment complex. The complex is shaped like like an rectangle, fairly small, maybe 100 feet on the ends and 300 feet long on the sides. There are 130 people that we are assuming may have about 3 devices each that they will connect to the wireless network, potentially simultaneously, as this is in a college environment. We have plenty of bandwidth and down/up speed. We are running 30 megabit down and 10 up. I am planning on having a router with two access points centrally located in an apartment and extending the network out with antennas in each direction from the access points with Omni directional antennas. The Access points that I am planning on using are Cisco WAP200 with maybe a Linksys router, as the router should not have more than 10 connections on it. I need something that will not crash after 10-15 users connect to it because it jams up from overload.

Networking :: Second Separate Network Using Single ISP Provided Address D-Link DI-624

Nov 25, 2011

I have a standard home network consisting of internet access provided by my cable company which is then disseminated to a variety of wired and wireless devices via a router.

I would like to create a second wireless network that is separate from my current one. This new wireless network would have extra access controls including access restrictions to some web sites using both IP address restrictions and using the OpenDNS DNS servers.

The picture below illustrates the current configuration. The question is: how can I connect ROUTER B to the internet using my current equipment (without buying another IP address from the cable company)?

W
MODEM --> ROUTER A --> ANTENNA <------> COMP 3
1 2 3 4
| |
| |
COMP 1 <---' | W
| ?? <--> ROUTER B --> ANTENNA <---> COMP 4
COMP 2 <-----' 1 2 3 4

W = WAN port

So, in the above picture, COMP 4 is connected via wireless to this second network and cannot access anything on the first network and uses different different DNS servers.

In case it matters, ROUTER A is a Linksys WRT54GL while ROUTER B is a D-Link DI-624.

Cisco Wireless :: Devices To Reach SA520W Radio In Main Building

Jan 9, 2013

We have a Windows server based network (15 wired computers) and four wireless devices (more to come)We are using a CISCO SA520W appliance in the main building as the perimeter Internet gateway / firewall / wireless access.  It all works well.We have a second building too far away for wireless devices to reach the SA520W radio in the main  building. The second building is connected via fiber to the main building (switch to switch).  Several wired computers are connected to the switch in the second building. We want to provide seamless wireless connectivity as wireless device users move between buildings.

We thought to mount and connect another simple B/G capable wireless access point, via ethernet wire, to the switch in the second building.  But we're not sure of the best CISCO/Linksys model to choose for this.  The choice should work well with the SA520W configuration and be relatively simple to configure in that environment. We're also unsure of the steps to configure a seamless wireless experience for the roving wireless device users.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Wrt320n Building Home Network With Wifi Roaming

Mar 20, 2012

I live in a new apartment building which means a lot of concrete. The internet (fiber) enters the house at the beginning where the modem is hooked up to my Linksys WRT320N. From there two cables run through the house:1 to the home office, where two computers are connected through a switch.1 to the living room, where the Xbox, blue-ray player are connected through a switch.I also have a wifi network running from my WRT320N, but as it is at the beginning of the house, there are some black spots in other parts of the house. I tried to fix this with a Netgear repeater, but that keeps disconnecting.

What I want to do know is place a second linksys device in the living room at the end of the already existing cable that will also broadcast a wifi network, but I want this to be exactly the same Wi-Fi network as I already have. What I want to achieve is that I can walk from one end of the house with my iPad, streaming a video, to the other end of the house and that I always stay connected to the internet and that my tabled just picks up the strongest broadcaster, basically the same as with a mobile phone.

Home Network :: Adding 3G Internet Access To Small Offline LAN?

Mar 10, 2011

I'm setting up a small network (one server, two clients) to create photo sales kiosks at an upcoming outdoor event. I will need internet access for processing credit card payments but there won't be any wi-fi or ethernet internet access on the site so I'll need to utilize my iPhone's 3G connection. I recently installed "MyWi" app which can tether the 3G and even create a personal wi-fi hotspot but unfortunately it only works in ad-hoc mode, not infrastructure. So far, the wired LAN is working great on my three Macbooks, using a Linksys (DD-WRT) router. Also, the wi-fi hotspot is working great to provide internet to all the computers. The problem, of course, is that I can't have both connected at the same time or else everything breaks. I've tried doing an iPhone-USB-Macbook tether and then sharing the connection via ethernet but the internet doesn't get through the router (because I don't have a clue of how to configure the router for this). I've also tried setting my router (DD-WRT) to do a client-bridge of the iPhone ad-hoc wi-fi, but again, it's way over my head and didn't work.
