I am currently working on a project where I need to design a complete wireless solution for a huge building. I performed the wireless rf survey by configuring the wap's to broadcast a SSID and walked around gathering rf coverage data. When configuring the test WAP's i did not join them to a lan controller ( AIR-WLC4402-50-K9 ) but simply created a static ip and ssid to broadcast but modified the internal antenna gain to +128 to change the direction of the broadcast. There are two other ap's already joined to the lan controller on a guest network (configured by another contractor) but when I go into the lan controller web gui I do not see anywhere that allows me to modify antenna gain on the individual WAPs. Also, once the waps join the lan controller they dont seem to be accessible via web. How I can I modify gain per wap?

I've come across a site where around a 3rd of the AP's had their antenna gain set to 0. I can only assume that something missed setting this during setup. The site uses 1242ABG AP's and each has 2 4941 antennas and i believe the gain should be set to 4 x 0.5dBi
got problems connecting to any internet connection on a lenovo G555 laptop with a atheros AR9285 wireless network adapter. Can access all the connections with a different laptop but not my lenovo so I know it is not a problem with the routers.Tried doing a system restore, tried disabling the network device then re-enabling it, tried switching the wireless on and off as well as restarting the laptop but no luck.

I was against this form of antenna due to their increased horizontal radiation and decrease of vertical. I was more in favor of an antenna similar to AIR-ANT24 30V-R. I've seen successful deployments with both options, but curious what the community has to say on the matter.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just realized that my internet is slow when my antenna is on top of my computer. I have a pci card with an external antenna connecting to it. If it's on top of my computer, my internet is slow, but if I move it three feet in front of it, it's fast. This makes me think that my computer is somehow blocking or conflicting with the signal. Is this normal, or is there something I can fix in my computer? Download speeds with the antenna on top are around 0.54Mbps, and if I put it as far away as I can, I get around 20Mbps.

Recently me and my girlfriend have been having issues with in game latency, receiving pings close to jittering to well over 300 where they were formerly in the 30-40s to identical servers. We live with a Chinese housemate who is extremely conscious of her privacy/personal space, we noticed a dirge of active ports on the router (both TCP and UDP) which seemed to have no association with any major application and assumed it was the old P2P boogie-monster. She is the only one who uses Wifi, an upon briefly deactivating the Wifi, all ping issues were instantly resolved. The bizarre thing is we still have plently of up/download bandwidth, I mean we're not swimming in a fibre optic connection but still a relatively healthy 1MB dl/70KB/s ul, more than enough for gaming.Deciding we needed a better idea of what was going on in the network, we downloaded Wireshark. We discovered a couple of things that might mean something, they might mean nothing at all:Firstly there was a deluge of random ARP requests coming from the suspect IP, something along the lines of:"who has 192.168.0.(random number) Tell (suspect computer's IP)"repeated over and over in bursts. A little googling found us this: Has Your Network been Now given that she is Chinese and is probably exposed to a lot of Chinese websites, is there any chance that this could be the root cause - could it drown the network to the extent that it produces terrible pings?Secondly there have been an inordinate amount of name queries coming from her IP to 192.168.0.255 (broadcast channel), they generally take the form of:
NBNS92Name query NB WPAD<00>
or
NBNS92Name query NB ISATAP<00>
and occasionally, it will name query my network id, leading to: (her ip being 192.168.0.3)
2144211275.734470000192.168.0.3 192.168.0.255NBNS92Name query NB (my id)<20>
2144231275.739314000192.168.0.3 (my id)TCP6658451 > netbios-ssn [SYN] Seq=0 Win=8192 Len=0 MSS=1460 WS=4 SACK_PERM=1
2144251275.741325000192.168.0.3 (my id)NBSS126Session request, to (my network id)<20> from (her network id)<00>
2144271275.744124000192.168.0.3 (my id)SMB213Negotiate Protocol Request
[code]....
Now combine this with the sometimes 9-10 active ports our router assigns to her IP (which don't appear to relate to anything according to numerous port id sites), does this send out a red flag to any of you? I realize it would be so much easier if I could get access to her computer, but as I said, she is very private and timid and doesn't seem to like even having people in her room, let alone letting them use her computer.
I just upgraded to BT infinity Fibre optic boradband... I now have a modem downstairs with a wi-fi router attached, however I don't have any space nearby to put my NAS... The modem and router have to be downstairs due to the cables. I want to connect my NAS to my iMAc which is upstairs, but also to my Macbook Air...
The iMac is upstairs and that is where my old router was, so I have my NAS up next to the iMac. I was thinking that maybe I could get a wi-fi extender with a built in ethernet port and connect the NAS to the extender... or maybe connect the NAS directly into the iMac...
I have three different network with different static IP's and I want to connect those routers with one switch. If any case any network gos down then another taking care automatically.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought this router from a rummage sale, and it works great. The only problem is, I cannot access it to set up a password. I have downloaded the manual, and tried the troubleshooting. I disabled the firewall, did the reset button on the back of the router, but all I keep getting is "The Connection Has Timed Out" error message. I also went to the emulator site, but it said that there was no support any longer for that model. I have tried this on both Internet Explorer and Firefox. I personally have Windows 7, and on Comcast.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a home (wireless) router. All computers have had good internet access for awhile. Yesterday, one particular laptop (Sony Vaio Z2) started intermittently having a poor connection. I've pinged the router (192.168.1.1) and it shows high packet loss and long round-trip times. Another laptop sitting right next to it (the one I'm on now) does just fine (no packet loss, round trips 1 ms or less).
What procedure can I go through on the Vaio, to figure out why its not working? Just before the trouble, I had updated the various drivers, but I really don't look forward to rolling them all back..

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm on a network in an office where each person's computer has different specs, some PC, some Mac. We all share files off a common drive, either using it directly, or, copying it to our local machine to work on it then return it to the shared drive. I'm looking for a way to attach a notification to a file to let everyone know it has been "signed out" by someone, to avoid two people taking the same file at the same time.I looked at a simple program called Shediko Badges, which puts a badge over the icon, by right clickingon the file and choosing a badge from a menu, and undone just as easily, however, it can't be seen by everyone else on the network. This is the sort of thing I'm looking for, simple, cheap or free, that somehow marks a specific file without changing the name. It could be a colour change, an icon change... whatever, ideally with several options, for example where a different colour could be assigned to each person in the office, similar to the coloured labels on a Mac.

Can I run a cable and attach the antennas five feet away from the device itself? Is there anything I should look for in an extension cable?

I have an LAP (1242AG) in one B site that I would like to attach (in H-REAP mode) to the WLC of site A(5508 v6.0.199.4). The topology is as follows:
MPLS - Site A - MAN - Site B.
When Site A is fully connected, all is fine, my AP of site B can successfully join the WLC of site A.
However, when the WAN interface of the router of site A is disconnected, the AP cannot associate successfully to the WLC. For us, it does not make any sense during that time, the AP of site B can successfully ping the WLC of site A and the traceroutes show the exact same path.
I took some debug on the AP and the WLC while the AP's was trying to associate to the WLC (when the WAN link of Site A was disconnected) and also when the AP could successfuly join the WLC when the WAN link of site A was reconnected.

View 3 Replies View RelatedCan a router connect to a switch to gain additional ports (to both access the internet AND to maintain an internal / home network)?IP line to house, connected to modem, connected to 4-port router, connected to 8-port switch. Now, each of six rooms in my house has one Cat-5e (RJ-45) jack whose run terminates to the switch. In some of these rooms, I need two wired devices (wireless isn't an option for the devices). Can I use the LAN port of a spare, wireless router (to also use as an access point for cell phones, etc) to plug into the jack and increase the number of ports in that room to have a functional LAN and WAN? I have read tons of info on plugging switches into routers to increase the number of ports, but not the other way around. Plus, ripping open walls to expand the network isn't feasible either. My other thought, would be to replace the switch with another (2nd) router, by connecting the 1st and 2nd routers together, and have the runs terminate to the open LAN ports of both routers --= and then expand the ports in those rooms by also using additional, spare wireless routers.
