I just upgraded to BT infinity Fibre optic boradband... I now have a modem downstairs with a wi-fi router attached, however I don't have any space nearby to put my NAS... The modem and router have to be downstairs due to the cables. I want to connect my NAS to my iMAc which is upstairs, but also to my Macbook Air...
The iMac is upstairs and that is where my old router was, so I have my NAS up next to the iMac. I was thinking that maybe I could get a wi-fi extender with a built in ethernet port and connect the NAS to the extender... or maybe connect the NAS directly into the iMac...

In my office we have wired network and DHCP is not configured. every one has to enter IP address manually.
I want to attach a wireless router so laptops connected with WIFI should be a part of same network.

I'm on a network in an office where each person's computer has different specs, some PC, some Mac. We all share files off a common drive, either using it directly, or, copying it to our local machine to work on it then return it to the shared drive. I'm looking for a way to attach a notification to a file to let everyone know it has been "signed out" by someone, to avoid two people taking the same file at the same time.I looked at a simple program called Shediko Badges, which puts a badge over the icon, by right clickingon the file and choosing a badge from a menu, and undone just as easily, however, it can't be seen by everyone else on the network. This is the sort of thing I'm looking for, simple, cheap or free, that somehow marks a specific file without changing the name. It could be a colour change, an icon change... whatever, ideally with several options, for example where a different colour could be assigned to each person in the office, similar to the coloured labels on a Mac.

How can I attach an optional antenna to a Dir 615 router?

My DIR-825 is not in an ideal spot so I am thinking of getting an extension cable for the antenna (probably for both), drilling a little hole in a wall and mounting the antenna in a more central location. It really is just on the other side of a wall, maybe 5 feet total for distance, but in an open area where the signal should reach more of the house.
Can I run a cable and attach the antennas five feet away from the device itself? Is there anything I should look for in an extension cable?

I am struggling since many weeks for an issue in my Wireless infrastructure.
I have an LAP (1242AG) in one B site that I would like to attach (in H-REAP mode) to the WLC of site A(5508 v6.0.199.4). The topology is as follows:
MPLS - Site A - MAN - Site B.
When Site A is fully connected, all is fine, my AP of site B can successfully join the WLC of site A.
However, when the WAN interface of the router of site A is disconnected, the AP cannot associate successfully to the WLC. For us, it does not make any sense during that time, the AP of site B can successfully ping the WLC of site A and the traceroutes show the exact same path.
I took some debug on the AP and the WLC while the AP's was trying to associate to the WLC (when the WAN link of Site A was disconnected) and also when the AP could successfuly join the WLC when the WAN link of site A was reconnected.

I have two 3750-X configured to be a stack and I am planning to re-rack these somewhere else. What I would like to know is what are the effects of having the master switch itself lose power? Does it immediately just make the member take over master (there should be no election since there are only 2 switches??) and there would be no loss of connectivity?

I have a 2 cisco switches that are at different sites one is a Cisco CAT4500 and other 3560. The connection between the switches is a layer 2 fibre link. CAT4500 and 3560 both have VLAN interface ip addresses in order for me to connect to the switches.
I have PC A connected to CAT4500 and PC B connecting to 3560. All these devices are the same VLAN and in the same subnet. I do have trunk links all the way though allowing this vlan as we run vlans. From PC A, I can ping CAT4500, 3560 and even PC B. This tells me everything is fine regarding Layer 2 & 3.
As soon as I move PC B and connect it to the other switch CAT4500 or move the other PC vice versa (this happens in both directions). Both switches learn that the mac address has moved locations and updates its mac address table accordingly. So when I do a show mac address table and show arp, everything has learned and moved fine. However when I try to ping any other device from PC B I cannot. So the 3560 switch PC B was originally connected to, I can no longer ping, the switch cannot see the pc also. It is as if PC B has not learned anything from the switch and cannot respond or reply to any icmp. I have tried this with different end devices, same thing. I am now thinking it has something to do with the switch.

I have this ARRIS router from Comcast that actually blocks some ports, so I can't use certain programs. I noticed this cause when I played this game, Ragnarok Online, I googled that it needs to open certain ports for me to login. Another would be my CoD, where I need to open some ports to join certain games.
Then I told my roommate that we need more LAN ports for our xbox, ps3 and TV. So we used this old router as a switch. At first, we used 1 of 4 LAN ports of the ARRIS Comcast router to the "Internet" port of the old router, so we thought we would have 4 more LAN ports provided by the old router. First day, it actually worked, and I was surprised that some sites aren't blocked, and I can login to Ragnarok Online. After some time, it stopped working, so I googled it then it says I have to Disable DHCP, use an IP address that's not used by the ARRIS router, then plug in the cable to 1 of the 4 LAN ports of the old router, not the "Internet" port. I did, then it worked again.
It did work as a switch, but how come it worked before where no sites/ports are blocked? To sum it all up, is there a way to make the switch (old router) work when I plugged the cable on the "Internet" port?

I've currently got my network setup similar to the picture below, except:
1. I only have PC1 and PC3 connected. Both PCs are running Windows 7.
2. I've got an XBox and PS3 connected to the router
My ISP provides two IP addresses, PC1 has its own IP and the Router has the other one. All devices are able to connect to the internet; however, PC1 is not able to communicate with the devices connected to the router. Is there anyway to get this network to work? I basically want it as if all devices were just connected to the router, but with PC1 having its own IP, and the Router having its own IP.I've used the exact same configuration in the past with both computers running Windows XP and was able to get the two computers to communicate by installing some protocol. However, I heard that the protocol was really outdated or something and not good to use for security reasons, but it did what I wanted it to do so I used it.

I have been charged by our technician to find a 5-8 port gigabit switch with a wireless option built in. This will be part of a build out that he is doing that includes a
NETGEAR ProSafe FS726TP Smart Switch - Switch - managed - 24 x 10/100 + 2 x combo Gigabit SFP - desktop - PoE
I was told if he had to have a router to be sure that he can turn off the routing abilties. As I peruse through the definitions of various wireless routers with additional ports I don't see this option spelled out.

I have a Linksys E3000 router that I've been using to connect my XBox online wirelessly. But I just got UVerse and now I have a set top box that I can connect to the XBox with an ethernet cable instead. I want to connect my PS3 online also, so I plan to connect the set top box to the router with an ethernet cable, then connect the XBox and PS3 to the router with cables. (The router would not be connected to a computer.) I just want to know, will this work? Do I need to set up the router in any way to act as a switch, and if so, how?

A switch and a router are both pretty straight forward in regards to how they work. Tho I have a problem with the router. I have 5 computers in my home and we have 5 different ips for the computers to use, these are handled by a switch. <Note: these are 5 *unique* ips that does NOT share bandwidth>
Recently I got a router and when I plugged it in it only gave us 1 ip to share amongst all 5 computers. This is a pretty big problem as we all of the sudden *share* the bandwidth. <Edit: the problem is that the router only gives us 1 of the 5 ips for the whole network to share>.What I wonder is what is it called when you get a router to accept multiple external ips and spread them out across the network, like a switch does? I assume this is a "special" feature on routers?
