Router To Work As A Switch?

A switch and a router are both pretty straight forward in regards to how they work. Tho I have a problem with the router. I have 5 computers in my home and we have 5 different ips for the computers to use, these are handled by a switch. <Note: these are 5 *unique* ips that does NOT share bandwidth>
Recently I got a router and when I plugged it in it only gave us 1 ip to share amongst all 5 computers. This is a pretty big problem as we all of the sudden *share* the bandwidth. <Edit: the problem is that the router only gives us 1 of the 5 ips for the whole network to share>.What I wonder is what is it called when you get a router to accept multiple external ips and spread them out across the network, like a switch does? I assume this is a "special" feature on routers?

I want to be able to easily switch off the internet, but stay connected to my local network. I'm trying to set up an arrangement that allows computer 1 to disconnect from the Internet, but stay connected to the local network, so computer 2 can still access the printer that is slaved to computer 1, and let computer 2 connect to the internet anytime.If absolutely necessary, I have a second Router that might be employed, for switching purposes. The trick is to be able to do this switching simply. Can I issue a command from computer 1 that will let me disconnect from the internet, but stay on the local network?

Right now I have it connected like this: Internet-> SURFboard SB6120 Modem -> DGL-4100 Router (modem in the WAN port, 3 internet connections plus the switch in the LAN ports) -> DGS-1008G Switch (2 other internet connections connected to this, as well as an Xbox 360).The problem is that everything connecting to the router works, and nothing works on the switch even though the power light is on (however, the port on the router that is receiving the switch is not lit up). I'm guessing this is because the router only assigns as many IP addresses as it has ports or something.

My main PC and modem is in a back room of the house, my secondary PC and game systems are in the living room.My main PC HAS to have a wired internet connection because that is what I want.My game systems and second PC need a wired connection.I would like to have my D-Link wireless router in the living room so I can use the WiFi for my iPods, iPad, laptop, and anything else that I am looking at when I am sitting on the front porch. I have an Epson printer that I can hook up to my network that I want to be in the back room with my main PC.To get the internet into the living room I am going to run a CAT5E ethernet cable under my house (off the ground and away from electric wires and copper pipe) from my back room to the living room.Is it possible for me to go from the modem to a switch box (I actually have two switch boxes, but I believe I will only need one)which would be connected to my main PC, the printer, and the ethernet wire going under the house to the living room... Then in the living room have the wire that comes from under the house (from the back room) go directly into the wireless router and then from the router have cables going to my game systems and the second PC?If this will work, will I still be able to control the wireless router with my main PC?

Would one of the 'Cisco RV016' work with a switch? I'm planning on running our work network using this device to load balance between 3 WAN connections and would like to keep the upstairs and downstairs computer users separated via a switch.Will the switch affect the load balancing or will the router still be able to detect each individual user and balance the load as seen necessary?

I connect a WRV210 router with Small Business 100 Series Unmanaged Switch SG 100-16 Switch. But the switch is not work with the router.In the port of switch (connect with router), no light. In router, the port is disable.Do I need cross-over ethernet cable connect with them?I tried connect WRV210 directly to computer, that is work. I tried connect WRV210 to other (no name) switch and connect this switch with Cisco Switch 100-16 switch than they are work. why?

If I connect my WAP121 directly to my router, it works just fine. But when I connect it to my SG100D-08P switch I can see it but when I connect, I get "limited connectivity" and it cannot "identify". The switch is PoE and everything looks to be working fine, but I have tried it both PoE and regular thru the switch; nothing works. Can't understand why if I connect it cat-cable going into the switch it works fine, but when I coonect it thru the switch, I have problems. I thought this switch was unmanaged, but something is going on.

I am having a bit of trouble. I have a Belkin router (this is irrelevant) across the house, which is extended by the Belkin wireless bridge/repeater in my bedroom. The device in my room boosts my WiFi signal for my MacBook and iPhone, and the LAN (ethernet) port on the back allows my Debian server to connect to the network and internet. I have a Linksys switch that I wish to use, for I have another computer that requires an ethernet connection. Here is what happened:Debian 1 is connected via ethernet, no problem.I shut it down, unplug cable. Run cable from bridge to switch's uplink.Plug another ethernet cable into port one on switch, run it to Debian 1.

I am looking to upgrade my dumb switches to a Cisco 2960 switch. I wanted to check and make sure that this configuration would be supported. I will need to setup 4 vlans on the Cisco 2960 switch, 1 for vmotion traffic, that would not have internet access, one for management traffic that would not have internet access, one for standard server traffic and one for vmserver traffic, those would both need internet access. Would the Cisco switch work with the SMCD3G-CCR gateway ok, or would I need another router in order to do this?

I have a SF 300-24 24-Port 10/100 Managed Switch and I am trying to set some VLANs. The image below shows how I want it to be setup:Since the remote site goes through the Internet, making port 20 an 802.1Q trunk over the two VLANs will give WAN connectivity to VPN/E-mail.I've tried all sort of settings [ see attachments] but can't get it work.

It looks like pretty basic config, but it does not work. I have 1x 2602i autonomous mode AP, 1x C2960 switch (with inter-vlan routing prefered SDM template) and 1x 1841 router.
I trunk between Switch and Router works smoothly, but it does not work between AP and Switch or AP and Router.
Configuration looks like this:

I have no previous Cisco switch experience. I just received a brand new SG200-08 switch. It replaces a small blue Trendnet 5 port switch. I configured the SG200-08 with a static IP address which is on the same subnet as all our wired devices, then I installed it and connected a computer and printer and another switch to it. The other switch is a Dell PowerConnect 2716. I suddenly have no network connectivity with the router any longer. When I plug the network cable that runs from the PowerConnect 2716 into the SG200-08, the link status light will not go on for that port. I am going to be replacing the Dell PowerConnect with a Cisco switch as well, the SG300-10.

I have a Cisco 2940 switch and a Cisco 1841 router. I want to build two different VLAN networks on the switch, which do not have to communicate one with each other, but those VLANS should communicate with the router.
I read a lot of articles, i tried to configure properly the switch and the router but i still don't get them work.
I set on the switch, the GigabitEthernet 0/1 port to Trunk port and i had to set it a native VLAN. The problem is that only from that native VLAN, i can ping the router.

We have over 30 Cisco 3560 switches and over 10 VLANs on our network. In our example, VLAN 10 on switch IP 10.0.20.150 works fine and VLAN 10 on switch IP 10.0.20.24 doesn’t work. I am trying get inter vlan routing to work on a DF 300 - 24 port switch. I have an existing company network on 192.168.111.0 and want to create a vlan on 192.168.1.1 that can talk to 192.168.111.0. I have enabled layer 3 routing on the switch via console and also provided the ip routing command. I have the following VLAN's:
VLAN1 - Default 192.168.111.0
VLAN2 - 192.168.1.0
I have enabled DNS and provided my two DNS servers 192.168.111.82 & 192.168.111.212. I have set the VLAN1 interface to 192.168.111.217 and VLAN2 interface to 192.168.1.1.
Ports FE1 - FE15 are set to access ports and assigned to VLAN1 (untagged)
Ports FE16 - FE24 are set to access ports and assigned to VLAN2 (untagged)
I have set a default route for the switch to 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.111.254 (Draytek 2600 router). I have connected a computer (A) to VLAN1 port FE3 and a computer (B) to VLAN2 port FE16. I have set Computer A default gateway to 192.168.111.217 and its IP address to 192.168.111.94. I have set Computer B default gateway to 192.168.1.1 and IP to 192.168.1.2.
Computer A has access to Mdaemon, file server via network drives but no internet (cannot ping google) and can ping computer B and RDP onto computer B.
Computer B can ping computer A and RDP onto computer A but does not have access to the company network i.e MDaemon, file server etc. It also cannot access the internet.
From the console I can ping [URL]and all ip addresses in the company network i.e. 192.168.111.82 (DNS server). If I scan computer A wirh wireshark the internet starts working weird!

I will be start with the disclaimer that I am very technical, but a huge novice to the enterprise-grade Cisco swtiches.
How IOS software versions are licensed on a Catalyst 4507 switch? I am very confused at this point.
For example, if I buy IOS Enterprise Services for a new Catalyst 4507 switch, what form does the software license take? Is the license embedded on the switch? Does it come as an e-mail or certificate with a PAK? Does it come on a CD?
We sold a 4507 with Enterprise Services to a client, and they are saying they don't have the right IOS version installed. I assumed there must be some license key they needed, but the Cisco licensing help desk does not seem to indicate there are any licenesable items on our sales order number (even though IOS Enterprise Services is a line item on the sales order).
I know there was a disk that came with the switch with an Enterprise Services .BIN file on it, but I had assumed that was just a software version image, similar to the images I can download off the Cisco website. But is this actually the license key?
Since I can download image files off the Cisco website, I assumed there must be some other key needed to activate the license.
Switch is Catalyst WS-C4507R+E

i need to configure this switch in order to work first the 2 core switch for redundancy then each catalyst switch 2960 connected to the core with 2 uplink each uplink for each core switch that way i have rendundancy in the connection then i need one vlan ?i need to configure this switch to work perfectly with each other in best redundancy mode?

I just reset my router to the factory settings in order to make some changes to it. However, when I tried to change the SSID to a unique name, I was unable to connect my computer to the wireless network. I then reset my security settings and left the SSID to the default name "linksys_SES_54125" and it is working just fine. I tried to connect with two separate computers both running Windows 7. My router is the WRT54G v8
why I wouldn't be able to connect to my wireless network when I change the SSID?

I have a DIR-655 B1 router. The firmware is 2.00 NA. Just to clarify, the DSi itself does work with WPA, but the games only work with WEP. I made a guest account and set it to WEP and it still does not work. I have tried making the main connection WEP as well, but when I go on the game and try it, it says it is WPA and not WEP. My friend has a DIR-655 as well, but the hardware and firmware version are different. Her games work flawlessly.

My parents home has ADSL broadband through a Netgear router and connected to a desktop PC, they want to change the PC for a laptop for ease of access and to save space. Once the PC is disconnected will the broadband still be able to work. As the plan is for the router to be upstairs in the spare room and for them to use the laptop downstairs (wireless).
