Jun 15, 2011I am buying a new wireless router for my home, and in the tech specs it tells me the router has Ethernet ports. If I only have internet through an asdl port will I still be able to buy the router and use it via ASDL?

I am replacing my qwest/centurylink actiontec q1000 with the td-w8960n. I have run all the different setups, with the different settings that I have found on the net but to no avail. The one thing I have noticed is that the light for the asdl on the td-w8960n does not come on, but yet when I plug it back into the actiontec it sees it and the internet works. Any reason why the td-w8960n is not recognizing the active dsl line?

Nov 19, 2011I have a DIR-655 B1 router. The firmware is 2.00 NA. Just to clarify, the DSi itself does work with WPA, but the games only work with WEP. I made a guest account and set it to WEP and it still does not work. I have tried making the main connection WEP as well, but when I go on the game and try it, it says it is WPA and not WEP. My friend has a DIR-655 as well, but the hardware and firmware version are different. Her games work flawlessly.

I have 5 computers in my home and we have 5 different ips for the computers to use, these are handled by a switch. <Note: these are 5 *unique* ips that does NOT share bandwidth>
Recently I got a router and when I plugged it in it only gave us 1 ip to share amongst all 5 computers. This is a pretty big problem as we all of the sudden *share* the bandwidth. <Edit: the problem is that the router only gives us 1 of the 5 ips for the whole network to share>.What I wonder is what is it called when you get a router to accept multiple external ips and spread them out across the network, like a switch does? I assume this is a "special" feature on routers?

May 6, 2011I want to be able to easily switch off the internet, but stay connected to my local network. I'm trying to set up an arrangement that allows computer 1 to disconnect from the Internet, but stay connected to the local network, so computer 2 can still access the printer that is slaved to computer 1, and let computer 2 connect to the internet anytime.If absolutely necessary, I have a second Router that might be employed, for switching purposes. The trick is to be able to do this switching simply. Can I issue a command from computer 1 that will let me disconnect from the internet, but stay on the local network?

I have reason to believe the IT guy for the apartment has NO idea what he's talking about, as he has told the landlord that it is probably too many wireless routers causing interference. This is not the case.Supposedly there are only about 4 apartments (out of 16) that are affected by this same problem, and I am the only person actively trying to fix this, as it is affecting my school work. I have limited access to the hardware of the building, but can get just about whatever I need for testing purposes through the landlord if I try hard enough.

I'm guessing this is because the router only assigns as many IP addresses as it has ports or something.

Jul 12, 2011tried 2 routers, one brand new , both DIR655 from Dlink - an older router. Just got a Comcast internet connection. The internet is fine when connected to the laptop directly. The router can talk to the computer. but plugging the internet cable into the router, the router never quite finds it, ie the blue indicator light never indicates access from modem to the router. So cant get that extra protection from the router, or the convenience of it.
By the way I am doing all of this hardwired even though the router is wireless capable. I did a hard reset which I could log on and see worked of the router. This happens when it is not hooked to the computer. I did the thing of powercycling modem and router, no change. Do I need a newer router? Is there something weird about Comcast, these were fine w Cablevision. Comcast tech support was useless.

I also have CompUSA Wirelesss Broadband Router, which I am trying to use and make a wireless set up to connect the following devices

I can directly connect the wire from modem to laptop and browse internet - it works. But that is not a wireless network. It proves that BSNL modem alone works.make this network Wireless by using the CompUSA wireless router.

Internet Won't Work Through A Modem But With A Router
Apr 22, 2011I have asked this question to an internet service provider and 2 different techs at two differnt computer stores and no one has an answer for me. What is happening is just a few computers you plug them into dsl just through the modem the phone company uses and you cannont get on the internet, you get no internet connection, But you plug the same computer into a router that is connected even to the same modem to get the dsl and it will work right away. Now I understand that the router acts as a dhcp server and the computer is getting its ip address from it, but why won't it pick up one from the modem without the router? When this happens and it is not very often you can use the same modem with the same cabling and plug in another computer and it will get online right away so it is not the modem that is bad and not the cabling.
We had this problem about a year ago with like 5 computers. would not get on dsl, online through the telephone companies modem how ever you would use the same modem and plug it into a router and you could get online right away. At that time the telephone company had a real old DHCP server and the date and time and everything was wrong on it I suppose the battery was bad but they did away with it and use a differnt one going through Netins internet service provider. At that time before they did away with the dhcp server I had called netins and told them the problem they didn't no what was wrong and like I said I spoke with two other techs from two other computer stores and they had never heard of the problem, well now he is having the same problem with two laptops, I was just there today and saw they couldn't get online but you could plug another laptop into the same modem and it would get online with no problem, I took the laptop home and hooked it through my router and it got online right away. So I told him I tnought it was something with there dhcp server that the laptop wasn't getting an ip address from it but then why would another laptop getting plugged into the same modem in a few min get right online.

My (SIP protocol) VOIP phone (192.168.0.100) does not work anymore since I use this router. It worked fine on my old WRT54G. The phone logs-in normally at the voip provider but when I make a call, it seems that the ports are not forwarded or are blocked by the firewall. I have tried to manually setup portforwarding and virtual server instead of portforwarding.
I have tried many things, from disabling QOS, SPI, end point filtering and more but it does not work. I have also programmed DMZ for my ip-phone, but it does not work. Nothing found in the logfiles about frame drops. (I have setup a syslog on my linux-server)
There seems to be a bug causing frames dropped, as my setup has always worked with my WRT54, and should work with DMZ set, but it does not. The same setup works fine on a DIR-655 of a friend.

Then in the living room have the wire that comes from under the house (from the back room) go directly into the wireless router and then from the router have cables going to my game systems and the second PC?If this will work, will I still be able to control the wireless router with my main PC?
