View 6 RepliesI need to make a wifi hotspot at my work place that is a completely open space with thick heavy metal roof on a two story high. The roof, beams, stands, and whatever on this structure are all metal.I need to connect iphones, ipods, and some other wifi cellular phones to the wifi hotspot.
Method 1) I have a T-mobile Galaxy S (Vibrant) that is capable for being AP (access point). Using an iphone, I could connect to this AP through wifi and surf the web no problem at anywhere, but not able to connect it at the work place under that thick metal sheet roof.
Method 2) I tried to increase the wifi signal. I did downloaded and installed "connectify" so that my lapltop becomes hotspot via its wifi; using USB tethering from my Vibrant. In this case, sometimes work, most of time no work.
Method 3) I ordered Clear 4G Mobile. This is capable to provide 4G via either wifi or USB. It worked perfectly at anywhere else, but no luck under the metal roof.
Method 4) I tried to maximize the wifi signal. I connected the Clear 4G to my laptop via USB (USB tethering). Then, bridged it to the laptop's LAN. This LAN cable was then connected to WAN on a Linksys router. Now, it's a real router for wifi. It worked perfectly anywhere, but no work at the work place.
Conclusion) Even though transmitter( the Clear 4G, laptop's wifi, or router) had enough and strong signal, the receiver (iphone, ipod, other wifi cellular phones) could not generate strong wifi signals to send back due to the signal scattering and interference under the full metal structure. I parked my car right next to where I tested all these stuff(still under the metal roof). I put the Clear 4G mobile with an iphone in the car. Put them next each other. I could use wifi from the Clear 4G mobile. I can guess that my car shielded the wifi signals against being scattered back to the metal roof. I also walked out of the roof, carrying both of them. Around 10ft off the structure, I could connect to the wifi.
Acer Aspire 5733 connects at 65Mbps over wireless-N and only has 1 ariel/antenna internally (but has 2 ports)...does this effect range?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI don't like the wifi installed in my laptops.I am thinking about switching them to intel 6300 and maybe one in bigfoot 1102 or 1103. My home router beeing 3x3 compatible I should see improvement.
Anyway I am wondering if it works easily or if I have to install some antennas inside which would be a big mess.
I have a Belkin Play N300 (part number = F7D4302) wireless router, and I want to connect my (soon-to-be-pole-mounted) 12DBI omnidirectional antenna to it, the goal is better wireless access in one area of a church camp. I have a couple of U.lf - RP-SMA pigtails on the way, because of course the router doesn't have an external antenna connection.
I opened up the router case, and below is a shot of the board. There's plenty of room inside the case. The router is dual-band (2.4 and 5ghz), and uses 2 internal antennae, apparently it senses the better one and uses it as needed.
My plan is to disconnect one antenna, and connect/solder my external antenna pigtail in its place. I'm a fair hand at soldering, but very little practice de-soldering...
1. Is disconnecting / replacing one antenna the way to go, and if so, which one? Or should I leave them both connected and piggyback my external onto one of them (soldering the leads on top of existing connections), or disconnect both antennae, or does it matter?
2. Which set of wires, white or black, are used for which band - and should I connect to? I assume I'd want to hook up to the 2.4ghz, correct?
The white wires come out from the tiny Broadcom chip, I think it's marked BCM43224KMLG (dang, that's some tiny print!). This page leads me to think that these are the 5ghz antenna leads, but I'd llike to be positive before I start cutting.
The black wires appear to feed from the larger Broadcom chip marked BCM4718A1KFBG. Again, this page leads me to think that this is the 2.4ghz antenna.
3. Assuming that the black wires are the ones I want, would it be ok to cut one really close to the board end, cut the U.fl connector off of my pigtail, prep the wire / shielding, and solder the wire / shielding on top of the existing solder connection?
My question is how can I use this existing wi-fi as input to a router to make a sub wi-fi for four computers and a wireless printer. Some of my computers may need to be wired into the router.

View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed connectify because my uni flat only had one wired outlet, and I wanted to use my xbox at the same time. It worked perfectly, but when I returned home I found my laptop could no longer connect to the home network, it just says it cannot connect, but all the over devices in the house work. My laptop can still connect to the internet via an ethernet cable but this isnt practical at home. I've uninstalled the connectify program, and tried my best to make sure I got rid of all the stuff it's done, but still my problem persists

View 1 Replies View Relatedfind a 3x3 (450mbps) WiFi antenna for the 802.11n 5GHz band? I'm pretty much looking for something similar to this, which works at 2.4GHz:

I've done a considerable amount of searching and have not been able to come up with anything. Individual 5GHz dipole antennas can be bought online, but these would be a sub-optimal solution for me, as I would like the antenna to have a solid base so it can sit on the desk/bookshelf.Edit: Found a Proxim antenna that claims to be dual-band, but it's pricey. Also claims to use reverse SMA connectors, so should work with desktop WiFi cards or mini PCIe cards with pigtails.[URL]

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy housemates have been having a trouble with network coverage in my house, the router is located in the basement of my house, perfect for me as my room is also down there (Ethernet). Unfortunately my housemate in the attic room's signal seems to be a problem. I'm wondering if it would be possible to remove one of my routers two antennas solder some copper wire to the spot it was removed, then have the wire go up to the 1st floor and re-solder the antenna up there (mount it on the wall or something). I'm confident with the practicalities of actually doing this, but I'm not that techie when it comes to electronics. I'm not sure whether it would need more power to boost it over such a distance.
