Broadcast Message To Find Ip Address Of Device?
Aug 22, 2011
we manufacture an industrial device that runs embedded linux, and we are throwing ideas around on how we can find devices that are connected to our network, without knowing their ipAddress. I know this is possible, because Advantech do it with their ADAM utility to find units. I put a WireShark sniff on my LAN as the ADAM Utility found a unit, and saw the following[CODE]

how a device (PC or router, in this example) knows to slow down broadcast of traffic.Say my cable modem from my ISP is coded to only allow 50mbps.My internal network supports the normal 100mbps.How does my router know to not send my cable modem more than 50mbps of data (because anything above, I assume after the cable modems RAM fills, will be dropped).I know TCP/IP has "Autonegotiation" which determines link type, but it's only based around if t's 1000/100/10 ethernet. No custom speed variable, such as 50mbps in this case.Say I put my network uploading data maximum stress to my internet connection, at 100mbps. Will my cable modem ever send some special packet telling me router that's too much or something?I suppose if I knew this, I could also understand how when I upload a file to another computer on my network, it does it at the full 100mbps, but over the internet, limited to my upload speed; but how does my computer or router know to slow down because my ISP doesn't allow 100mbps up? It has to be able to detect link speed somehow, otherwise just constantly sending 100mbps up will result in tons of lost data at my router/cable modem, and give the computer a frequently false sense of upload speed.

So I was having trouble loading a game on my computer and I was scrolling through forums looking for an answer and one answer that supposively worked for a lot of people was to unisntall and reinstall my network card.IT told me to go to devices -> right click network adapter -> uninstall -> then scan for hardwarer changes to reinstall When I clicked uninstall an error message popped up and said "Unable to uninstall device because device is required on startup" and then it apparently just uninstalled it anyway and it showed back up after I clicked "scan for hardware changes".Now ever since, everytime I try and connect to the internet my computer says "Limited or no connectivity" and I'm unable to access the internet on that computer, the computer I am on now can connect just fine, so it must have something to do with the network card that i supposively unisntalled.

I know that the routers communicates using routing protocols and that they forward the ip packets. So I looked in the IP header and the RIP header(for example) and I don`t understands when an packet comes in how does the router understands it`s type? (There`s no byte field to tell him explicitly that this is an ip packet or a rip message)

I have recently configured secondary ip address on LAN Interface of Cisco C6509.. We have some application which needs to use broadcast traffic communication to communicate with client... Broadcast is working within subnet & also working from broadcast server to primary subnet. But not working from secondary subnet.. I have checked broadcast within secondary IP range & it's working fine... Secondary not working broadcast with primary and also with broadcast server... broadcast address is different for these subnet but both should be communicate since configured on same interface... When I went through Cisco website found that command "ip directed broadcast" which will pass broadcast to different subnet... But I'm not sure whether any other impact if I enable that command on particular Ethernet interface...

here where I work we are having an issue with IP Address conflicts. We are not sure exactly why, though. We have only had it happen 2-3 times so far, but this has been over the past week or so, and we would like to get it resolved. Here is what is happening: Last week we were getting an "IP Address conflict" message on one of our computers. It had received 192.168.3.112 from our DCHP server, so we switched it to a static IP address up beyond our DHCP range. We then tried pinging the address with the conflict, but got nothing. We figured it was some device that had a static address, so on the DHCP server we reserved it to a non-existent mac address so it wouldn't hand that one out again. This wasn't a problem, since it was an isolated incident.
Since then we have tried periodically pinging 192.168.3.112 to see if there is actually a device using that address, but have gotten no replies. Since then we have had another one or two times where this has happened, but with different IP addresses. We went around and checked a couple of different wireless routers that we had deployed, but the DHCP had been disabled on all of them (but then again, the issue came up just recently, while the routers have been out there for months).

I have a Netgear WNR612 wireless router, which worked fine for a few weeks. Then something happened and I can't keep the connection anymore. It happened right after I used iTunes to update my iPhone, perhaps a coincidence, but I'm mentioning that just in case. Internet still works fine with ethernet cable straight from the computer, only the wireless connection doesn't work. This happened about a month ago and I haven't been at home much to fix the problem. I have turned off and unplugged everything for several days at a time while gone. I get a Network Error message saying, Windows has detected an IP address conflict. I have tried restoring the router back to factory settings and reinstalling the wireless card. I have tried changing the IP address settings both in the Network and Sharing Center and the router admin page. What I think I should do is change the IP address in Command Prompt, but when I type "ipconfig /release", it says "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected" and the same for Local Area Connection. I don't understand what this means, because there is a wireless key in my keyboard and there is a white light (not orange) like there should be. Also in the Network and Sharing Center, I can see that the connections are enabled.
