How Does The Router Find The Type Of Message It Has Received
Nov 5, 2011
I know that the routers communicates using routing protocols and that they forward the ip packets. So I looked in the IP header and the RIP header(for example) and I don`t understands when an packet comes in how does the router understands it`s type? (There`s no byte field to tell him explicitly that this is an ip packet or a rip message)

I was wondering what could cause this, because every time this message shows up in the log I lose internet connection for about 1 minute then it comes back up. Let me know if I need to get any config info.

we manufacture an industrial device that runs embedded linux, and we are throwing ideas around on how we can find devices that are connected to our network, without knowing their ipAddress. I know this is possible, because Advantech do it with their ADAM utility to find units. I put a WireShark sniff on my LAN as the ADAM Utility found a unit, and saw the following[CODE]

we have a 7206vxr router with pa-pos-2oc3 and SFP-OC3-IR1-C. Our provider wants us to check transmitted and received power on the SFP.
Â
I already looked around and know theres no way to check or adjust transmit power and saw its -15 to -8dbm on the datasheet.
Â
Is there a way to check received power?

I replaced my old wireless router with a Cisco Linksys E4200, running firmware version 1.0.02 build 13  May 24, 2011. About once a minute the router sends an unsolicited DNS message to the IPV4 multicast address 01:00:5e:00:00:fb with a destination IP address of 224.0.0.251. The unsolicited message is a DNS response with source port 32784, transaction ID 0, flags 0x8400 (standard query response, no error), questions 0, answer RRs 2, authority RRs 0 and additional RRs 1. The two answers both relate to the router itself: one has Name Cisco18738.local, type A (host address), class 1 (IN), cache flush true, time to live 1 minute, data length 4, and the address of the router. The other is the reverse of the same address. The additional record is for Cisco18738.local, type NSEC, class IN, cache flush true, time to live 1 minute, data length 5, next domain name Cisco18738.local, RR type A (host address).
Â
When my desktop computer receives these messages it logs an error, for example: "Jun 23 07:39:22 sauterws02 avahi-daemon[1067]: Received response from host 10.146.9.1 with invalid source port 32784 on interface 'eth0.0'" The 10.146.9.1 is the router's IP address. I also see these messages on the wireless link from my laptop.I suppose the E4200 is generating these DNS messages in a misguided attempt to make sure there is no old information about its name. Is there a way to turn them off? If not, is there a way to report this to Cisco as a bug?

I have a Linksys wireless router model WRT54G (not sure the exact model, it's not in front of me right now). It has worked flawlessly for the past several years, but for some reason has recently stopped working. I confirmed it's not a problem with the DSL Modem, as I can hard wire connect to my laptop and the internet works fine. It's clear something is wrong with the wireless router. I've tried unplugging, hitting the reset button on the back, and nothing has worked. My computer is able to recognize/locate the router and connect, it's just that I can't connect to the internet. One thing I've noticed under the wireless connection is that the computer is able to "send" packets, but not "receive." My experience is that this is always the case when I experience connection problems, but I have no idea what that means. I was going to call the Help Line, but I see it costs $30 which is likely more than my router is worth and probably 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of a new one so I am trying to troubleshoot myself.

have one router WRT54G with firmware version v2.02.7, Feb. 27, 2004, and I'm trying to use this router to get my PS3 connected to the internet, but in the PS3 appears that I'm using NAT Type 3 and to enable some online features in my PS3 I must change it to NAT Type 2 (from the router configuration), I tried everything that I found (put my PS3 in DMZ zone, enabling TCP/UDP ports, enabling/disabling UPnP, disabling Media Server Connections in my PS3, etc.) and nothing works,

For Xbox 360? currently, whether wired or wireless, my Xbox 360's NAT type is strict, and I am unable to do anything online whatsoever. Is there anyways to set up an exception, or anything that can open my Xbox's connection to my router so I can actually use it online?

I have a WRT120N router.it goes alright in connection wise but for my ps3 my Nat type is strict which wont let me join in some of my mate's partie's or host a game. And i REALLY wanna fix it by opening my nat. I've basically tried everything port forwarding but when you save it when port forwarding, it doesn't save like it look's like on the video's i have seen on YouTube.I've done that DMZ thing which also didn't work.I've basically done everything on YouTube and other site's.I'm just wondering if it's just the router. Or just the way i have it all setup because my router is setup in a different room with the computer which is hooked up with the modem and my ps3 is in my room which is a different room and is just connected threw WiFi my connection on the ps3 is wireless obviously.Â

this might sound straight forward, but every other pc or console can find and connect to my router. This issue seems to happen about once every few months, sometimes it comes back by itself and reconnects completely fine.
There isn't a "user limit" on our router.Wireless adapter is dell wireless 1505 draft 802.11n wlan mini-card.
Have restarted PC and uninstalled and reinstalled the card.I tried to set the i.p address to static but it says "adapter disconnected" so won't allow me to edit any settings, despite it being able to find neighbour's wireless very easily.

Looking to set up a wireless printer (HP Deskjet 3050 All-in-One Printer - J610a) for use by another computer on the network; at present the printer is wirelessly connected to the router (Linksys e1000) and the software is installed on one computer (Win 7). The router recognizes a Network printer but no details about type.
The printer works correctly with the Win 7 machine but can't be found by the other machine (Win xp). Could it possibly be that I need to install the same software on the Win xp computer in order for it to be connected? Just guessing here as that was the case with another printer I networked but it was a Canon brand.

I have a Linksys E3200 and it is connected to the internet by Ethernet cable. Like that is what my ISP gave me. No DSL line or anything like that, just straight up Ethernet cable. I went from having slow internet and connecting to everyone to fast internet and cannot connect to anyone, only when someone that has a open NAT to host it for me even to connect. I have tried DMZ, port forwarding, disabling UPnP and enabling it. Also I can't connect to any of my friends that have the same ISP as me.

Recently Ive been having issues with connecting to games on my PS3, Ive been trying to do things like Port Forwarding like I did on my old router but the way this router is set up is extremely different. On this router it seems there is no Port Forwarding it's now Port Triggering and it seems to require more info than Forwarding does.I should mention Im using a Router from Centurylink and I have no Admin powers, I can still go in and do things with ports but how I would change my NAT type or Port Trigger
