I'm moving into a new place pretty quick, and my ISP has just introduced those lovely (read: awful) modem/router combos. I want to use my router running DD-WRT however. If I disable all firewalls, etc. and the DHCP server on the built-in router, and then have that all enabled on my DD-WRT router, everything should work, right? That way the combo unit would basically just be acting as a modem.

My Motorola SBG901 Modem/Router combo has stopped connecting to the internet. I have done all the troubleshooting with Comcast and with Motorola and it is out of warranty, so I will have to purchase a new one.In the mean time, I wanted to use it only as a wireless router connected to my Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 modem. Is there anyway to do this? Is there a way to disable the modem in the SBG901? Simply connecting with the ethernet cords has not worked. I connected the DPC2100 to the SBG901 via ethernet cord. My computer was able to pick up a wireless connection but there is no cable connection.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi just bought a Netgear WNDR4000 router due to troubles with my current modem/router combo (D-Link DSL2730-B). The router doesnt have in built modem functionality obviously so I need to set up the modem/router as a dedicated modem.Also should I use the current modem/router as the dedicated modem or an older model i own (I think its a DSL 502T)? Because the current one often drops the internet connection. Don't know if its a problem with the modem functionality or something else. Will the older one serve better since i didn't have any problems with that one or will it be outdated? I only upgraded due it not having wireless capabilities. Otherwise it's fine.Or will I be even better off buying a dedicated modem? I really don't want to spend more money but if this is a far better alternative I guess i will.
EDIT: Ok so found out that I have to put the modem/router in bridge mode in order for this to be possible. However, looking up how to do this lead me to a dead end because i need to fill in some fields that i have no idea how to interpret.

I switched to xfinity and I really don't feel like renting their gateway for $7 dollars a month. Gateways are crap anyways. So do any of you know of a good router and modem that can be paired up to work well with xfinity and has good speed?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently went to a higher speed ADSL which claimed to be 16Mpbs.. It is with Acanac and when i first tested with speed net it came in over 14Mbps. I was using a netgear wireless g router (old) with the 4200 speedstream modem and got these results which I found acceptable. Now using netgear n router modem combo DGN-2000 and my readings are just over 12 Mbps. I tried reverting and still got the lower speeds. I tried isolating one computer hard wired still got the lower 12Mbps.It hasnt really affected my download speeds as far as I can tell but I did find it a little puzzling.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Linksys E2500 and I'm trying to connect it to my ISP provided router (Actiontec V1000H) because I wanted better range and consistent connectivity for my 6+ wireless devices.My problem is that, to make this work, I connected an Ethernet cable from the E2500's yellow internet port to one of my V1000H's LAN ports. This, however, did not give me access to the internet even though the network for my E2500 was available in the network list and selected as the default network. I then had to go the the advanced settings of the E2500, and changed the router IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.2. This granted me internet access.However, everyone i've talked to including coworkers and experts at dslreports said that, because of what I've done I've set up a double NAT with 2 potentially conflicting IP addresses, and down the road weird issues will arise because of it. They also suggested I connect the E2500 to a dedicated modem to avoid this problem. However, the dedicated modem I was sent was faulty and did not allow internet access even through the ethernet connection. So, until I get a new dedicated modem, I have to use the router/modem combo.What should I do? Should I set up the E2500 as just a wireless access point for my existing router/modem combo? What do I need to edit in the advanced settings?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using a 2wire 2701HG-B wireless router/dsl modem combo. My computer is a Win 7 Ultimate 64bit. The router/modem has been reliable for the last 2 years.. hardly ever needing a reset, reboot, or anything. Then all of a sudden my wifi network didn't show up anymore. I did a reboot, nothing. Kind of weird so I got on the phone with AT&T and they walked me through some simple stuff and they determined it's either the router or my computer. Well I know it's not the computer, I can use the mobile hotspot on my android phone and it gets on just fine.All of the lights on the router are green, AT&T showed that all the tests show the internet connection is working. Since the router is not sending out a wifi signal anymore, I had to plug the ethernet cable in. The system recognizes a connection but says it isn't connected because it is a "public" connection. Additionally, if I go to network connections with the cable plugged in, I can see my DirecTV DVR is showing on the network (because it is connected to the router via ethernet too). So it isn't broadcasting wifi, I can see my DVR over the network in windows, but I can't get the IP renewed.

He says has 3 static ips for the modem, and 1 of the network cables coming from the modem directly into the D-Link Router. I first attempted to just plug it into the uplink, and let DCHP do its magic, but I had no luck with that. I could connect to the router but it didn't have internet.
So I restarted the downstream router, and plugged the network cable into the 1st port, and suddenly I had internet on the wireless but it would constantly go up and down, and ping times were extreme erratic.
Through experimentation I recently found that the video viewing problems on my computer are being caused by the wireless router.If I bypass my router and plug my computer directly into the modem, I have no problem viewing videos. But then that causes my laptop in another part of the house to loose its wireless connection to the net.I understand there is a way of bypassing the router without losing the laptop wireless connection. It has something to do with entering CMD and I.P. Config and a couple of other proceedures of which I am not sure how to do.

I have a situation that may be a little unusual here. I need to have the DNS servers used by the router be for our isp, but the DNS servers used by our individual pc's to point to a different location. The reason being that we are filtering web browsing on the PC's, but setting that at the router level messes up our VOIP and CC processing. I know how to set the DNS servers on the PC's themselves. But as stated we have problems with the phones and cc processing equipment if I change from our ISP's DNS servers and/or uncheck 'Enable DNS Relay', which makes the filtering work on the pc's but the other devices no longer have a connection.

I'm doing this to, among other things, run some tests to evaluate the impact of my router on my bandwidth.However, removing the line seems to be causing problems.Everything is fine when I'm behind the router, but once I unplug the line from the router and plug it directly into my computer, I can't connect to the internet. View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased the WET610N Wireless Bridge to use with my Samsung BD-P1590 Blu-Ray Player. The player has a few built in apps that include Netflix, Bockbuster, Pandora and YouTube. I successfully setup the bridge and hooked it up to the blu-ray player. It wasn't that hard. All the internet apps on the player work fine except Netflix. The first time I use the netfix app, it is supposed to give me a code that I use to register the device with netflix. However, I get a message that Netflix is temporarily unavailable. I have called netflix and they assure me that this is not the case and that it is most likely my wireless setup. The troubleshooting on Samsungs website points to the same thing. With that said, I disconnected the player from the wireless bridge and wired it directly to my router. Netflix works just fine then. Below is a list of things I have attempted:Disable the firewall on the router to see if it was blocking the app. (had the same results)Checked my firmware on all my devices (they are all current)Powered down all my devices and started them up back up starting with my DSL modem and ending with he blu-ray player (same results)Configured the bridge and player to use a static IP vs using the IPs automatically assigned by the router. (same results)Disabled aggregation on all WMM categories. I don't think the WRV54G router supports aggregation,, so I though this might cause a conflict with my setup. (same results)Enabled the broadcasting of SSID (same results)Chatted with linksys support. They basically checked to see if I had the latest firmware and that the bridge was working. They then recommended that I exchange the bridge for a new one. (I have not exchanged it for a new one yet, just because I am not convinced that there isn't something else wrong with my setup)My Configuration

I am not sure if the problem lies with the routewr or the bridge. I am hoping someone out there can confirm that the WET610N truly does work whne using it with a BD-P1590 blu-ray player. This would lead me to believe that there is something wrong with my configuration or with using it combination with my older router. I would like to note also, that I have had one instance where BD Live didn't work. However, it has worked on other disks.
I work at a boarding high school at nights and as such I have a lot of free time. However the internet here is very restricted due to obvious concerns about children and unrestricted access. I have private internet at my room on campus but its too far away to connect to. I was wondering if it would be possible to setup my laptop/tablet to connect to my home computer and access the internet through them without restriction. And if so how would I go about doing that?

I've got an SG300-10P switch and am trying to use it to create a testing environment for a Fiber Test set. What I would like to do is get two hosts, A & B, plugged into ports 1 and 3 on the switch, to talk to each other, but forcing the traffic to be routed through the two Combo ports 9 & 10. Please see the attached diagram.I've attempted to configure two VLAN's, 10 and 20. Vlan 10 is used for traffic between Ports 1 and 9, Vlan 20 is used for traffic between Ports 3 and 10.I don't really care whether the traffic is tagged or untagged as it passes between ports 9 and 10.
I've tried various combinations of tagged/untagged ports, PVID's, etc. As a first test I've bypassed the Fiber Test set and simply created a direct connection between ports 9 and 10. I am unable to get the traffic from Host A to Host B to get routed through ports 9 and 10 (I ping each host from the other and get no response).
I would like to be able to modernize these outlets with a new RJ11 jack for telephone and replace the electric outlets with fresh ones. Problem is, no one can lead me to where I can find new wall plates for this combo setup style. Someone has told me this is out of code for many years now and there is no clear cut path to modernizing it besides just moving the telco jack/box out of the electric gang box and into its own separate box to the side.
Upgrading such "messes" to standard modular RJ11 plugs, and finding wallplates for it?
I have a cable modem installed to my property but want to use my modem/router to go wireless. The proble is my cable modem output is a RJ45 and the router input is RJ11.

View 4 Replies View Relatedmy computer randomly disconnects from my modem and will not reconnect until I restart my computer (do not need to restart modem). When I check the modem, it always is still running. The lights on the modem do the exact same thing whether the internet is working or not. The disconnection is entirely random. Sometimes it will disconnect immediately, sometimes it will take up to a few hours. I do not have a router hooked up to the modem, and the only other thing the modem is hooked up to is our tv. But even when the tv box is off, we still randomly disconnect.

I am trying to hook up a 2nd router to our network to extend range and allow extra ethernet connections points. The new (2nd) Router is a Linksys E1200. I have been told by multiple sources it should be possible to hook the Linksy's router to the modem/router, but I am still not sure how to. All of the directions I have read involve disconnecting the old router (in my case, the Q1000) and then connecting the new router (E1200) in order to configure it. But I am not sure how to do this with out the internet access provided by the old router. how to cascade like this while using a modem/router
