Cisco :: Block Virus By Broadcast Storm?
Oct 27, 2011
To prevent virus to spread throughout the network ports or switches, can i used broadcast storm to control? sometime, network may encountered loop, or some virus spread?
interface gi0/1-24
storm-control broadcast level ?
storm-control multicast level ?
storm-control unicast level ?
storm-control action shutdown
What will be recommended level? or the threshold / pps ?I read through cisco website, and understand, however, just never apply before, what is the recommended level for ?in my network, we do have network ports connected to media server, just sharing video, song, etc for testing purpose, however not using PIM, but it work.

We have 3750 and 4510 switches and in both we run Q-n-Q but we observed looping/Broadcast Storm we already run TSP on 3750 end and this is corporate branch but 4510 its difference branch where we run q-n-q technology.

So the SG300's have STP on them and prevent network loops when other switches on the network also support STP too. However, if someone plugs in a non-managed switch that doesn't support STP with a network loop, is there anything within the SG300 switches to isolate and/or prevent that from happening?
(I currently have port mirroring turned on for one port and a network sniffer attached awaiting the incident to happen again).

We have two network (one have internet access and other doesnt have) within a same office and some pcs are connected to both the network using two NIC. So i am planning to implement a router in between those network and as it implement default routing so we can share all the resources. make both the network secure from virus as one of the network should be worm free. What i personally think that implementing a router will reduce worm replication.

I`m connecting a client directly to a 3750, and giving them a public IP.
On the port I have set spanning-tree bodyguard enable
But I guess I should also set some storm control etc. What settings should I use for storm control?
The client has a 100Mbps internet connection running trough this port....

We're using ME-3600 and ME-3800 switches to create VPLS domains. Now to avoid L2 loop issues with 3rd parties connected to the multiple ME-3X00 switches and configured in the same VPLS domain, we would like to configure storm-control.
When checking the configuration manual about storm-control on ME-3X00 switches it mentiones: storm-control is configured on the physical interfaces and when it's triggered it will not only impact the physical interface buy also the EFP configured on it.
According to me this could mean two things:
When there's a storm on the physical port, the port wil be shutdown (it if this the action configured) and of course the EFP on that physical interface will be impacted too (logical consequence). When there's a storm on an EVC (EFP) configured on a physical interface, it will shutdown the entire physical port (if this is the action configure) and as a consequence all other EFP will be impacted too. Briefly: is the configured storm-control on an interface also triggered by storm-controls on an EFP? I suppose it would but like to have some confirmation.
configuration example
interface GigabitEthernet0/2
description TEST storm-control
switchport trunk allowed vlan none
[Code].....

Yesterday there was huge storm, and lightning smashed into nearby house. My computer was running and I turned it off just after that. Result of nearby lightning was that internet no longer worked afterwards.
Soon after I was able to connect on my laptop, (laptop was connected and turned on during storm too) but desktop was still unable to do so.
I noticed that in device manager there is missing network adapter in list. EVerything is connected as it should be, but ethernet port doesnt have any lights on. I believe there should be some small light on port as is on my laptop, but Im unsure.
how I could check whether my network card is ok? Or what could the problem be? I really hope its just software issue.

There is a port on 3560E, facing POP, this port is in the dedicated vlan, that is terminated on 7606 on SVI (peering point). There is configuration made on the 3560E port, that prevents storm of ucast or bcast kind. This is: switchport block multicast switchport port-security maximum 1000 switchport port-security switchport port-security violation restrict storm-control broadcast level bps 1m storm-control multicast level bps 1m storm-control action shutdown storm-control action trap no cdp enable no lldp transmit no lldp receive spanning-tree portfast spanning-tree bpdufilter enable spanning-tree bpduguard enable. [code]
I want to get info not only about the fact of storm attack but also about at least source and destination of it (i.e. source and/or destination MAC). Perhaps this could be some logging messages. Are there any means for this on C3560E-UNIVERSAL-M (IOS ver 12.2(53)SE2) and 7606-S.

I have 2 ME3600Xs and utilize Broadcast and Multicast storm control on client facing interfaces. One of my ME3600s is reporting a Multicast storm and that a packet filter action has been applied. The strange thing is that it is showing up on an Admin Down interface that has nothing connected to it. [code]

We have around a dozen Catalyst 3560 and 2960 switches in a ring topology. We are considering adding storm control to our trunk ports. Up until now we have only used it on edge ports with default values and without error-disable.I am proposing that we also add storm control to trunk ports at a lower level and that we error-disable only the redundant links that make up our loops.
-storm-control broadcast level 25.00 20.00
-storm-control multicast level 2.00 1.00
-storm-control action shutdown [only on redundant links]
In a storm all links will restrict broadcast which should work accessing remote switches, but the redundant links should errdisable and block the redundant path. It is important that the action line is not applied to links that are not redundant as we could isolate parts of the network. Any reason not to use storm control on trunks?

I'm having is I used to have a virus on my computer, until running a number of scanners to get it off. I'm pretty sure it's clean at this point, but now I've ran into the problem of not getting any internet from my ethernet cord. I've tried plugging in another and it gave me the same problem. I've tried running WinSock hoping it was just a registry problem I could fix, but that didn't seem to work. I also tried running "ipconfig /all" in my command prompt and got this error: [code] I'm running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2.I'm at the point where I'm considering just reinstalling Windows, but I figured I might as well ask someone who knows better than I do of a better alternative.

using virus scanner over the network and this is related to my workplace. a pc with win xp can share all drives (including c:) over the network with another pc with win xp as well. let's say pc1 and pc2 (both with win xp). i can scan pc2 from pc1 once i hv shared all the drives. but for win vista n 7, i found out that it is not possible to share c:...yes, there are some ways to share it but the entire c: cannot be shared. n i also know that c: cannot be shared entirely due to security purposes. but can i bypass this only for virus scanning purpose? i know many will juz ask me to install the anti virus on the infected pc, but if possible i want to scan it over the network. if i hv to scan 20 PCs at the same time i find it easier to do it from a single pc than to install the anti-virus at every single pc.

Can your router or even your modem contract a virus? Wouldn't it have to be designed specifically for that router/modem? If it does is there even a way to remove it? I have wondered this for a while, mine doesn't though.

I called my internet provider and we spent hours trying to figure it out and it wouldnt work. So they told me it was the computer. my daughter got a new laptop and we plugged the cable into her computer and the internet worked perfectly. I contacted emachines but they charge me for customer service.

Today I got the Win 7 virus on my laptop and did a system restore under safe mode and downloaded malwarebytes via pen drive from another computer and did the full scan and nothing came up. Computer is now showing nonsigns of the virus but Internet is unable to connect to the wireless. My regular virus protection isn't working well either, it won't let me scan my computer and real-time scanning keeps turning off after I set it on.

When one sets up a wireless network, do devices that use the Internet wirelessly benefit from increased security because their connection comes through a router? I thought I heard this from a tech podcast. I don't mean security from hacking, such as having a password, etc. I mean that the router itself gives some security from virus.

I encountered a similar problem of no internet after virus removal.
a) IE shows "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"
b) MSN and Skype do not seem to respond as well
c) My laptop is connected to a router and I'm able to access other PC on the LAN, but not anything requires internet access
d) The LAN icon on the taskbar shows my PC is connected to both the router and the internet (but internet just somehow doesnt work)
e) Proxy option isn't enabled
f) Booted my Win Vista in Safe Mode with Networking, internet doesnt work as well
g) output from ipconfig seems ok; able to ping gateway ip
h) checked the list of network services posted on this thread; they're all started
i) Removed my antivirus program and disabled windows firewall; to no avail as well
j) MSN repair suggests that there's firewall/ dns issue that causes MSN couldnt connect
k) Both wired and wireless connections used to work; but both not working now
l) Other PCs on the LAN are able to connect to internet

After getting virus and cleaning the system as requested, including all of the registry items not required, I have been unable to get onto the internet.Bad Image Error.I have a Mesh PC, running XP SP3.The motherboard is MS-7207 ver2.I've tried reinstalling the ethenet drivers but to no avail.I can see the network adapter in the control panel and it says the drivers are installed OK.The green light comes on when the cable is plugged in but not the yellow data lamp.I have a second hard drive from an old PC that I reinstalled windows on booted from, I updated the drivers and successfully connected to the internet, which proves all the hardware and drivers do work, but just not on my main hard drive containing my proper windows install.I'm logging this fault on my work laptop as its the only way I can get on line. (My work laptop works at home over the same broadband connection I have used previously.

I have Windows Vista. So I had a virus that was making it impossible for me to open a web browser without it starting a fake security scan and spamming my screen with multiple browsers. I had no other choice but to do a system restore since I had this problem in the past and a system restore fixed my computer. But, after the system restore, I can connect to the network using a wireless, but when I try to open any browser(firefox/internet explorer) it says internet explorer cannot display the webpage or server not found on firefox. I've tried resetting my internet settings, but no luck. I also don't have an internet security anymore since I was trying to install Kaspersky, but kept having trouble installing it properly.
