Cisco Routers :: WRV54G - Setup New VPN Connections For Windows 7 And XP Laptops
Sep 26, 2012
We are still using some old WRV54G wireless VPN routers for work. Can we get new vpn software that will work with these routers? The quickvpn client software we have no longer works after we last updated the firmware. How can we set up vpn connections using tunneling?

I have been able to play streaming video via Windows Media Player with no problems for just about forever until last month. No software has changed. i have the latest firmware (2.39.2e) for the router. i am able to play the same videos when i use my AT&T data connection or when i am connected at work, ,so i know it's not the files i'm trying to view. WMP fails to play whether i am hard connected or wirelessly connected.

We have a newly-purchased RVS4000 v2 with firmware v2.0.2.7. Its intended role is as a gateway between our local network of wired workstations and a Cisco 2800 series Integrated Services Router, which is at the receiving end of our T1 line. It is configured with static IPs on both the LAN and the WAN side. It does NOT serve DHCP for the LAN. Ever since I installed it, I have had repeated complaints from users of Vista and Win7 workstations that they lose internet connectivity about every 20 - 30 minutes or so. The only solution is to unplug the workstation's CAT5 cable, count to 30, and plug it back in. Then everything's hunky dory for another 20 - 30 minutes. Meanwhile, all our Windows XP and Linux workstations enjoy uninterrupted internet access. The router/gateway we replaced (a DLink DIR-130) never had this problem.

Windows Messenger continually connects and disconnects. This behavior is permanent I only have problems with Messengers (all releases), web page access is correct. I check bandwith saturation and It's ok, I use less than 50% of each DSL. I configured the correct size of MTU for each DSL and the problem continues. Is there any way to set priority to this service? Is there any way to check if the "load balance mode" affect this kind of connections?

I have a home network with an Actiontec Q1000 providing me 20 meg down and 5 meg up speeds. The DSL modem supports DHCP, DMZ, port forwarding, application forwarding, filtering, etc. I have an existing network 192.168.0.x that uses a combination of DHCP and static IP addresses for printers, scanners, and servers.I just purchased a RVS4000 and configured its LAN port to accept a DHCP address. It received the .26 address. I set up application and port forwarding so all VPN traffic goes to this address. I also put the router in the DMZ and turned off all firewalls. On the LAN side of the RVS4000 I use the 192.168.1.x address and have the 4000 provide DHCP addresses. I have a PC connected to the LAN port and it has the address of 1.100. I am able to use TeamViewer to connect to this through the internet and I can also access the devices on the Actiontec network from the PC connected to the 4000.I set up the VPN as best I could while going through appendix B of the admin guide. When I am at a remote location and use the QuickVPN client to access the 4000 I get the message, "The remote gateway is not responding. Do you want to wait?'. When I look at the log everything looks good except I get the following error:
[WARNING]Failed to ping remote VPN Router!
I am unable to get a DHCP address for my remote PC and am unable to ping any device on either network. What do I have configured wrong that this is not working?I only purchased this so I can use the VPN. Is the VPN established on the Actiontec LAN or on the RVS4000 LAN side? I am obviously connecting to the 4000 but am just not getting an address so I can not use my home office network for all my communications.

There are currently 6 laptops in my household.4 windows (1 vista, 1 xp2002 pro, 2 windows 7) and 2 linux (both ubuntu). Night before last, without warning, all 6 stopped connecting through the wireless router. I took the router out of the mix, and now only the linux laptops can connect to the internet via ethernet cable. comcast support is useless.any ideas what could be happening here? Only 1 of the linux and 2 of the windows laptops were connected at the time this occurred.

I cannot get my server to send outgoing traffic through my network. I.e. If i try to connect to any of my services i get a very weak connection. Now, i can still CONNECT, i just don't get any data flow. I cant even PING the server internally, it just times out. Now, regardless of whether i use my internal IP/external domain, i get the same issue. I logged onto my computer and tried a speed test the download was normal (around ~20mbit) but the upload times out.
Here is the fun part, if i connect to the server using a switch, everything works fine! Is it my router or some stupid configuration issue? Router is a WRV54G (I hate this thing). Server is running windows 2008 and has a virtual machine.

I recently purchased the WET610N Wireless Bridge to use with my Samsung BD-P1590 Blu-Ray Player. The player has a few built in apps that include Netflix, Bockbuster, Pandora and YouTube. I successfully setup the bridge and hooked it up to the blu-ray player. It wasn't that hard. All the internet apps on the player work fine except Netflix. The first time I use the netfix app, it is supposed to give me a code that I use to register the device with netflix. However, I get a message that Netflix is temporarily unavailable. I have called netflix and they assure me that this is not the case and that it is most likely my wireless setup. The troubleshooting on Samsungs website points to the same thing. With that said, I disconnected the player from the wireless bridge and wired it directly to my router. Netflix works just fine then. Below is a list of things I have attempted:Disable the firewall on the router to see if it was blocking the app. (had the same results)Checked my firmware on all my devices (they are all current)Powered down all my devices and started them up back up starting with my DSL modem and ending with he blu-ray player (same results)Configured the bridge and player to use a static IP vs using the IPs automatically assigned by the router. (same results)Disabled aggregation on all WMM categories. I don't think the WRV54G router supports aggregation,, so I though this might cause a conflict with my setup. (same results)Enabled the broadcasting of SSID (same results)Chatted with linksys support. They basically checked to see if I had the latest firmware and that the bridge was working. They then recommended that I exchange the bridge for a new one. (I have not exchanged it for a new one yet, just because I am not convinced that there isn't something else wrong with my setup)My Configuration
DSL Modem --> WRV54G Linksys Wireless Router --> WET54G Wirelss Bredge --> Samsung BD-P1590 Blu-Ray Player
Router is broadcasting in Wireless G only on channel 1
Using WAP-PSK encryption
I am not sure if the problem lies with the routewr or the bridge. I am hoping someone out there can confirm that the WET610N truly does work whne using it with a BD-P1590 blu-ray player. This would lead me to believe that there is something wrong with my configuration or with using it combination with my older router. I would like to note also, that I have had one instance where BD Live didn't work. However, it has worked on other disks.

I have a Linksys WRT110 wireless router that has never given me any problem. All of the sudden, after a storm blew through yesterday, none of the laptops in my house (PC running Vista and Mac) will recognize my wireless network. I have a desktop computer and BluRay player hardwired to the router and the internet works fine on them through the router. The problem is not that I can't connect or lose connection, the wireless network isn't showing up as existing anymore, like it has disappeared.

I have a general networking question regarding VLANS, multiple broadband connections and accessing PC's on both setups from each other. What I would like to do is have 2 broadband connections, one a cable connection and one a DSL connection. I would like to run them both through a Netgear FS-726T switch. Since the cable connection will go through a Linksys router giving out I.P.s in the range of 192.168.1.x and the DSL will probably use the same range, I would like to keep specific PC's connecting through the DSL connection and some other PC's specifically through the cable connection. I THINK that this can be done via the use of VLAN's set up on the Netgear switch but I am unfamiliar with setting them up. I've read through the manual and researched it online but I must be missing something.Due to the bandwidth limitations on the Comcast connection, I would like to avoid any data coming from the PC's on the DSL connection from going out through the cable connection (I do customer support for my business and want customers to be able to access files on my file server and also be able to back up their PC's online to my backup server but on the DSL connection. I will eat up my cable bandwidth in a hurry just from the backups alone. I would like to set up all the PC's with static I.P. addresses if possible. Now, I also need to be able to remotely access any of the PC's from outside my network (which I can do now) but I need to be able to access the cable connected PC's from the DSL connected PC's and vice versa.I have a feeling what I want to do is a mess and may not even be feasible. I have asked the networking personnel where I work but (primarily because they are arrogant SOB's) they won't even give me the slightest bit of information.

I have 2 internet connections in my office one via Verizon Fios and another one via the local cable company. On the fios connection I have an RV042 VPN router and on the Cable company connection I have an rvs4000 router, I would like to know if there is a way I can connect the 2 so I can share a printer I have on one of the 2 networks from the other network without using the VPN feature, like via an ethernet cable connected between the 2 and some kind of static route maybe?

I have the setup as following on my PC:
[code]...
I use the fibre internet for almost all internet activities since the speed is fast. However, when I do school's stuff, I need to VNC to my lab's server. Hence I need to connect to school internet point. External IP cannot directly connects to my school's server. Therefore, I would need to force Windows (or VNC) to use the connection of the Wireless Ethernet card when I VNC to my lab's server. But I want to use my fibre for all other internet activities.

I have a couple WinXP Pros and Win7s connected to the same router wired and wirelessly. All of them have Remote Desktop enabled (via System settings) and have Windows Firewall exceptions setup. They all have AVG Anti Virus and no other firewalls installed. They all also have static ips assigned.Windows file sharing is working fine between all of them. VNC also works with no problems. But for some reason, I could not get Windows Remote Desktop to work between any of themAnother weird thing that may or may not be related is that they can't ping other computers on the same network. This leads me to believe that this might be a networking issue.I have a DLink router (can't remember model) with a Tomato Firmware.I do not have port forwarding setup for Remote Desktop because I think (although I may be wrong) that they are only used for connecting from the internet, which I don't need. I only want local connections right now.

Is there a way to set up Quick VPN on the RV120W without changing the internal subnet? I have just taken over responsibility for a network and I don't know all of the nooks and crannies yet, so I'd rather not change the internal sub net. I've tried setting up a user then changing the LAN settings afterward, but it automatically removed the VPN user when I did so.

I have a dual boot computer - Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 Home Premium. When booted into Vista I can map my Network and connect to the Internet, a network printer (ethernet) and a second Windows XP computer. When I boot into Windows 7 I can still access the internet and my networked devices but I cannot map my network. Also, the network system icon (bottom right-hand screen) shows erroneously that no connections are available - but clearly they are! The attachments show the status of my Vista and Windows 7 connections. The only thing that appears to be odd is that my Windows 7 system is set to 'Public' and my Vist system is set to 'Home'. I have tried all manner of things to change Windows 7 to 'Home' but to no avail.

I would like to get either the Cisco VPN client to work or just to be able to connect with the Win 7 VPN connection. These are dynamic client IPs btw.I've made all the necessary accounts through the Web Management console but haven't had much luck so far. I did enable PPTP server and disabled "Block WAN Request" today to try again while remote later.
I think this is the v1 model. It has A00 on the back and I know of no other way to tell which version it is.
My other concerns is that the firmware is 1.3.98-tm and would like to update this to v2.0.2.01 . We have 2 remote VPN static IP users with existing connections that seem to be working fine (the admin that configed these is no longer here). I'm afraid to update the firmware in the event that this would cause some problem for them to reconnect. This article at the link below stated that a previous firmware ruined his connection and wouldn't allow him to revert back to the previous firmware. [URL]...
Is this true for all firmware upgrades for the RV082? Can you not restore to the previous firmware? If not, might it cause any configuration or reconnect problems for the existing VPN Tunnels if it works without other issues? Also, is the Cisco VPN client capable of connecting from WIndows 7 Home Premium?

I had a Sony Viao with Windows Vista for some years and I managed to create a bridge using the Sony Viao laptop and my o2 usb modem. That was some time ago and now I have a new laptop with Windows 7 ?I have to mention that I do not have wireless connections. I have an o2 modem and an ethernet cable. They are the only two connections that show up in my internet connections. The LAN connection has an image of a ethernet cable connection while the o2 connection has an image of a phone.whenever I watch youtube walk throughs it never looks like my set up. Ive tried everything over and over. Turning off UAC, turning on sharing but nothing has worked yet. When I just select the LAN connection and right click there is an option to Bridge. When I right click the o2 connection its not there. When I select both the option isnt there either.

I can make connections from Site A to Site B using Windows XP clients, eg accessing exchange server 2007 running on Windows 2003x64, but the main problem is that when I try to configure Windows 7 clients to connect to exchange server on the other site, I can't make connections , no ping, no ssh , no http. What amuses me more is that I can connect to Windows 2008 servers using both Windows XP and 7.

There was a big storm last night, and when I woke up I found that I couldn't connect to the internet. I have my computer plugged into the cable modem. The Windows network status says "Not connected, No connections are available". The onboard NIC that I had been using is no longer showing up in the device manager. I figured lightening might have knocked it out, even though my computer is behind a UPS and surge protector, so I bought a PCI ethernet card. This installed correctly and is showing up in the device manager, but I'm still getting the same error. When I unplug the ethernet cable, there is no change in the status.
