I have access to a Supervisor III (WS-X4014), which will provide OSPF support. Question is, are there any gotchas to shutting down the switch, replacing Supervisor Engines and then powering up? What about the flash card? On my current system, it appears that I am only using bootflash: , which is where the IOS resides (see below). Since my startup config is in nvram and my IOS is in bootflash, what's the purpose of the flash card in slot0: ? and where does NVRAM and bootflash actually live on a 4006 ( on the Supervisor Engine?)

I have a 4507R with a WS-X4515 supervisor V. It was booting into rommon mode, so I attempted to boot to an IOS image from TFTP. The boot process hangs at at the end of the below output and the then the status light blinks orange. I left it sit like this overnight, and it remained the same.

We are expanding out LAN network with more 2960 access switches. All the access switches are suppose to be connected to core switch (4507R) but i have less port on the core switch.
On the core switch we have two supervisor engines (WS-X4515 ---description : "Supervisor IV with 2 1000BaseX GBIC ports"). I can see that on each supervisor engine i have two 1 GB SFP ports available and if i calculate for two supervioser engine i will have 4 1GB ports.
But at particular time only one supervisor engine is active and other is in standby mode (redundancy mode used is SSO between two SUP engines).
Can i used all 4 SFP ports for connecting 4 uplinks to the 4 access switch?Will all the 4 SFP ports active at one time or only 2 SFP ports will be active that is for only active supervisor engine.
I am looking at getting a Cisco 4003 and get a Supervisor that can support IOS. Something like this url...I can't figure out if the the 4003 can take an IOS supported Supervisor engine. The Cisco documentation is lacking since it is EOL.

In the synchronization process, the active supervisor engine checks the standby supervisor engine run-time image to make sure that it matches its own run-time image. The active supervisor engine checks three conditions:

I was upgrading IOS on 4507 R with dual supervisor.I download the IOS on Active supervisior and did reboot.After reboot i login to switch then i got switch standby prompt.I found that after reboot active supervisior became standby supervisior.

I was looking to 6500 series switches. I saw DFC4 module (WS-F6K-DFC4-A, WS-F6K-DFC4-AXL) and (WS-F6K-DFC4-E, WS-F6K-DFC4-EXL). Data sheet for supervisor engine 2T wrote that for maximum performance you should DFC4. I'm a bit confused. I didn't any useful information about it:
1. DFC4 is a separate module(consumes 1 slot)? Does it have any ports on it?
2. Is it a daughter card? If yes, should it be installed on supervisor or it should be installed on line cards?

View 3 Replies View Relatedwe've had an issue with our network, we have 2 6509 connected with redundancy, which are connected with 2 x 4900 Switches, from which are connected to a ESX Chassis for visualization, the thing is that the ESX stopped working, and the 4900 switches, and the main core were suffering from overload, they hang on it very well, in order to stop the overload, one of the links to the ESX Chassis were disconnected from one of the 4900 switches. The CPU usage from the 4900 and the core(6509) went down below 40%, and then they started to migrate the virtual servers from the chassis to another 2 chassis that were added right after. They were actually working well, but suddenly the 6509 changed to the other supervisor after everything was OK. We were wondering what could have been the cause of this, maybe the virtual servers migrations, maybe the overload from the ESX ? We also had a few question, is there any need to reload the cores every few months as a planned task ? Because the cores have been up for more than 1 year. And also is there any kind of of tool to monitor the CPU status, or the status overall from the cores or the switches ?

Each core has 2 SUP's (hot/standby). out of 4 SUP engines, one is defective. i had received the new SUP from cisco. Currently my core swicth 2 is running with single SUP. Can i directly insert the new SUP engine in slot 6 (free)? will it automatically load the existing IOS from active SUP? what will happen if the new SUP has a different IOS other than the active SUP? Also is there a way to find out the IOS version without inserting in the chasy?
