Cisco 4003 IOS Supervisor Support?
Jan 3, 2012
I am looking at getting a Cisco 4003 and get a Supervisor that can support IOS. Something like this url...I can't figure out if the the 4003 can take an IOS supported Supervisor engine. The Cisco documentation is lacking since it is EOL.

A small compatibility question regarding 6500 series:
The document: [URL]
, but Dynamic Configuration Tool sais that:
"Two or more selected items are incompatible. Selected or default-included item [WS-SVC-FWM-1-K9] is incompatible with: [VS-S2T-10G]. Please change one or more items."
Where is my missunderstanding ?
Should I use Supervisor 720 ?

I'm currently in the process of evaluating potential equipment options for a Core Router/Switch that will be running BGP with several Tier 1 ISP's, the table download from each ISP will be full (300,000+ Routes). I was looking at a 6509-E with dual SUP720-3BXL supervisors but after reading the below link I'm a little concerned by the maximum routes table: [URL]
Do I have to go to the VS based 720 supervisor as a minimum to support full BGP on a 6509-E? Does any experience of the above switch + supervisor combination under a full BGP table, how well does it work? I'm looking at long term using this as a consolidated core (i.e. a VRF for the Global Internet routing table + a VRF for internal data center traffic, plus maybe some more shared VRF's).
Would I be better keeping a Core switch by itself and just buying edge routers to run BGP?

1) Does the 6500 series router support supervisor module redundancy like the 7304 does? IE, can I put two identical sup720 modules in the chassis for failover?
2) Can I use any ethernet interface on any line card on the 6500 series for router interfaces? If not, which line cards work as router interfaces?
3) Differences between the 6500 series and the 7600 series? Can I use a sup720 modules from a 6500 in a 7600?

So the 2T comes with 2 10GE and 3 GE uplink ports. Can you use all 5, one or the other, a mix, or what? How does that work? It's not really clear from reviewing the products webpage or data sheet.

We currently have the following configuration:
STB_6509#sho mod
Mod Ports Card Type Model Serial No.
--- ----- -------------------------------------- ------------------ -----------
1 10 WiSM WLAN Service Module WS-SVC-WISM-1-K9
2 24 CEF720 24 port 1000mb SFP WS-X6724-SFP
5 2 Supervisor Engine 720 (Active) WS-SUP720-3B
[code]....
I would like to add a redundant supervisor blade to the 6509 that is in production. Can this be done plug and play and require no reload. Are all WS-SUP720-3B the same as far as memory etc... or can I buy any used WS-SUP720-3B and it will work properly.

We have a 6509-e (WS-C6509-E V04) with (4) (WS-X6148-GE-TX) 48 port modules and a supervisor 32 (WS-SUP32-GE-3B).We purchased a supervisor 720 (WS-SUP720-3B) and (2) (WS-6708-10G-3C) 8 port fiber modules and (1) WS-X6748-GE-TX)48 port module to add to the switch. My question is what is the best way to swap out the supervisor module? Can the SUP720 be added as a standby module so that the config can be transferred? Probably a long shot. Is there anything in this swap that I should be concerned with? The other three modules should be pretty straight forward.

Removing and Installing a Supervisor Engine on a cisco router 7690 and more important IOS upgrade of this module.
I need some kind of manual, but I would prefer a short procedure to do this change. A brief of the steps to do that. Also i don't if i have to upgrade the new module after install it.

We've been mocking up a test lab to test VSS on two 6500's. Each 6500 has one sup720 and a 6708-10ge blade and we've established the two 10ge links between the two chassis; the first from the each chassis' sup and the second from each 6708.My question is, what happens when the supervisor fails on one of the chassis?

How the port numbering would be on Sup 7-E and Sup 7L-E? I mean, on Sup-6E and Sup-6LE, if I used a twin-gig converter, I used ports gi3/3,gi3/4,gi3/5 and Gi3/6 [If the sup is in 3rd Slot]. I know there are now 4 ports on the Sup 7 which can either be used as Gig ports or TenGig ports. So, how will the port numbering change ?

I have a 4510R-E chassis which currently has a single supervisor 5 installed.
We are now looking at upgrading the supervisor to a Sup6. Now the question is this, can I install the Sup6 into the redundant cpu slot and then perform a failover to get the new switch working without any noticable downtime.
I'm not sure what having a Sup V and a Sup 6 in at the same time will do to the backplane.
Otherwise I have to take the switch down and then install the card and software manually.

I'm having a trouble with a 4510R+E switch. The WS-X45-SUP7-E supervisors are constantly rebooting, and we can see a 'critical software exception reload' reason. We have checked the logs
______ uptime is 5 weeks, 1 day, 19 hours, 3 minutes
Uptime for this control processor is 37 minutes
System returned to ROM by reload
[Code]....
What can we do to solve this incident?. Everything was working fine, and suddently the problem arose.

We are trying to upgrade the IOS on one of our 6509 switches. We have two 720 10GE supervisors running in SSO. Our procedure is reload the standby supervisor with the new IOS. We understand that you can only use one console connection when in RPR mode so we rely on the active supervisor giving us information that the standby unit is up and running.
The problem we have is that when we do a "show Module" on the switch the online diagnostics for the standby supervisor comes back us unknown. [code] We believe the active supervisor can see the standby supervisor because when we save the configuration we get a message saying that the config is sync'd with the standby router. We have a TAC case raised to investigate. We are upgrading from 12.2(33) SXI1 to 12.2(33) SXJ3

I was looking to 6500 series switches. I saw DFC4 module (WS-F6K-DFC4-A, WS-F6K-DFC4-AXL) and (WS-F6K-DFC4-E, WS-F6K-DFC4-EXL). Data sheet for supervisor engine 2T wrote that for maximum performance you should DFC4. I'm a bit confused. I didn't any useful information about it:
1. DFC4 is a separate module(consumes 1 slot)? Does it have any ports on it?
2. Is it a daughter card? If yes, should it be installed on supervisor or it should be installed on line cards?

I have a Sup32 that I suspect has faulty NVRAM (e.g., I am unable to "wr mem" on the device - it states resource is busy but no other active connections exist). Prior to replacing the supervisor engine I'd like to take a crack at formatting NVRAM to see if it resolves the issue. This supervisor does not have a CF card installed, thus no Disk0:. Within the CLI, I am presented two options with the "format" command - bootflash: and sup-bootflash:. Bootflash: does not have any data on it, however, sup-bootflash: contains my IOS image. I believe that both of these locations are simply directories within NVRAM.

I have an older 4006 with a Supervisor II+. We now need OSPF support, which the Sup II+ does not provide. I have access to a Supervisor III (WS-X4014), which will provide OSPF support. Question is, are there any gotchas to shutting down the switch, replacing Supervisor Engines and then powering up? What about the flash card? On my current system, it appears that I am only using bootflash: , which is where the IOS resides (see below). Since my startup config is in nvram and my IOS is in bootflash, what's the purpose of the flash card in slot0: ? and where does NVRAM and bootflash actually live on a 4006 ( on the Supervisor Engine?)
sh bootvar
BOOT variable = bootflash:cat4500-ipbase-mz.122-31.SGA11.bin,1;,1;
CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist
BOOTLDR variable does not exist
