Cisco VPN :: PPTP Tunnel To Linksys RV042 Not Working Through 2620 Router
Jan 9, 2012
I have a remote location that has a Linksys/Cisco RV042 router [URL] that allows PPTP connections based on username and password combinations. There are no intermediary routers between this device and the internet - only a DSL modem. A secondary WAN connection is not present.
I am able to dial into this VPN using the Windows XP and Windows 7 dialers from any of my local free-wifi locations(e.g. Starbucks). I WAS able to connect to this VPN connection from my house when my home router was a Buffalo brand router.
I have replaced the Buffalo router with a 2620(non-XM) that is connected in ROaS fashion to a 2950 switch. I need some guidance on what in my config is not allowing me to connect to this remote site.
Home network info: Local subnets : 192.168.x.x
Remote network info: Local subnet : 10.214.x.x
The Windows XP dialer client indicates that the username and password challenge is where the connection fails. It ultimately gives me the error code 619. I have performed a Wireshark packet capture of an attempt to connect from ip 192.168.10.11. This packet capture shows multiple "Configuration Request" packets being exchanged between the two endpoints, but does not ever show an exchange of authentication.
My nat translation table shows an entry for both a GRE tunnel as well as port 1723 between 192.168.10.11 and the WAN port of the RV042 when attempting to establish this VPN.
I have attached my 2620 configuration for your review.

Currently i am having a scenario where i have setup RV042 and which is connected to Microsoft Forefront 2010. PPTP works fine only on rv042 subnet but i am not able to access the "internal" network of TMG.RV042 (172.16.1.1) ---> TMG [external] (172.16.1.2) ---> TMG [internal] (192.168.1.1) Is there any way through static route to access the TMG internal network through RV042 pptp server?

Setup is two dynamic IP locations
1. first location RV042 is the gateway attached to ADSL modem
2. second location RV042 is behind BT home hub gateway - for now the BTHH DMZ is enabled to the RV042
Followed the user manual config for two dynamic IP but it seems that the RV042 behind the BTHH obviously has a different IP than the resolved IP and is causing problems with connection.
This from the log file:
Jan 14 15:04:16 2011 VPN Log Received Vendor ID payload Type = [Dead Peer Detection]
Jan 14 15:04:16 2011 VPN Log [Tunnel Negotiation Info] <<< Responder Received Aggressive Mode 1st packet
Jan 14 15:04:16 2011 VPN Log Aggressive mode peer ID is ID_IPV4_ADDR: '192.168.95.139'
Jan 14 15:04:16 2011 VPN Log No suitable connection for peer '192.168.95.139', Please check Phase 1 ID value
Jan 14 15:04:16 2011 VPN Log initial Aggressive Mode packet claiming to be from 81.156.xxx.xx on 81.156.xxx.xx
But no connection has been authorized, check peer ID Is there some way of making the RV042 behind the BTHH properly identifiable to the other end?

I have problems to make a PPTP vpn to my M0n0wall. PPTP passthrough is enabled, port 1723 TCP ist forwarded to M0n0walls WAN Interface. Rules on the M0n0wall are set correctly. It seems that the Linksys has problems with GRE 47 protocol routing. Does a newer model (WAG120N or WAG320N) work with PPTP passthrough?

My network to use a RV042 router. It is connected to my cable modem and working well. I may add a DSL connection later in the month as a backup. All I really want to do now is setup my PPTP VPN connection. I have not been able to find a guide so I will assume it isn't that bad. I set up 2 accounts in the VPN-PPTP Server screen. Built my connection on my android phone and voila nothing works. So I tried to disable the "Block WAN requests". I tried port forwarding the VPN to 192.168.1.1 (address of the router) and no luck. AT this point I am stuck. I know my infrastructure is right because from outside the network I can [URL] and see my router configuration. Now if I could just get a simple PPTP connection

My network consists of the following:
Office-RV042 with static IP ->SBS2003 (10.10.10.5/ 255.255.255.0)
Remote: BEFSR41 with Dynamic -> XP sp3 VPN client (192.168.3.x/ 255.255.255.248)
Within the RV042 I have enabled the PPtP server and assigned a user. No port forwarding enabled. All VPN passthroughs and firewall is enabled. DHCP server is disabled.I can establish a connection to the rv042 and ping PCs including the sbs domain server on the office side but am unable to browse any folders. When I attempt to access a network folder located on the office server I am prompted for a username/ password. Upon entering my domain credentials I get an error stating: "the user name you typed is the same user name you logged in with. That user name has already been tried. A domain controller cannot be found to verify that user name"

I have configured PPTP Server on RV042, and created 3 accounts. I am able to connect from Windows PC without any problems.
In the router's logging utility, there doesn't appear to be any log entries indicating either successful or failed attempts to connect to PPTP server. The only access logs I see are for access to the router's configuration utility. Is there a way to view PPTP access in the router system log?

I have two offices connected with an IPSEC VPN tunnel using RV220W routers. The Tunnel works fine for local users between the two sites(Site 1:10.0.0.x; site 2 is 10.0.2.x). I have also set up PPTP users for remote access. PPTP users that connect to site 1 cannot access site 2 and vice versa. The PPTP users have no trouble accessing the resources on the site that they connect to. I have tried activating RIP and adding various static routes with no success. If I PPTP connect to site 1 and I tracert to an IP address on site 2 the route goes to the site 1 router and then goes to the internet(connected to the site 1 router) where it stops.

I have a Cisco 877 router and I configured it to act as a VPN server, supporting both PPTP and L2TP VPNs. I can succesfully connect to it from Windows computers using the built-in VPN software. There is only one problem: when using a PPTP VPN, encryption doesn't work. If I configure the client to require encryption (default setting), the connection fails with an error about the remote endpoint not supporting it. If I remove the encryption requirement, the connection succeeds. I've also tried tweaking the encryption settings (40/128 bits), but this didn't work either. [code]
The router's IOS version is 15, and it fully supports encryption. The strangest thing is, encryption is actually required in the router config; but not only the router doesn't seem to offer it... it also accepts unencrypted connections, which it shouldn't. It's like the ppp encrypt mppe auto required command is completely ignored.

I have a situation where the site-to-site tunnel is already established using PPTP IPSec VPN with non Cisco Gateways terminating the link on each end. These non Cisco Gateways do not support L2TP tunneling, and there is no plan to change them.Beyond the Gateways on both ends, we have a Cisco 4500 series switch. We need to forward the 802.1q tagged VLANs between the two sites. Is it possible to use 802.1Q tunneling in this case, going via a PPTP tunnel ?
Cisco's setup uses dot1q-tunnel over a L2protocol-tunnel to preserve the original client VLAN tagging, so does this mean that the only option we have is to setup a L2TP tunnel at the Cisco device endpoints, and have that tunnel go through the existing PPTP tunnel (established between the 2 non Cisco VPN Gateways) ?

I possess a RV220W (firmware 1.0.3.5) but I can't seem to work with the PPTP server on one VLAN only.
My default VLAN is in 192.168.1.1/24. I created a VLAN ID 10 in 192.168.50.1/24 inter-vlan routing : disabled and Device Management : disabled. (Menu Networking > LAN > VLAN Membership and Multiple VLAN Subnets).
Then I configured a PPTP server on the IP range 192.168.50.200 to 192.168.50.210.
To finish I created my user. (Menu VPN > IPSEC > VPN Users).
The PPTP tunnel is working, but on all my local network and not only the VLAN ID 10.

Region : Hongkong
Model : TL-WDR4300
Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : TL-WDR4300_V1_121225
Even I have upgraded to the newest firmware for WDR-4300, it still not allowed me to connect to a windows PPTP VPN. It worked when I changed to use my old router. On the other hand, when I turned the hardware NAT, I found that the Cisco VPN connection would be dropped after I used for a few minutes. Similarly, it worked when I changed to use my previous old router.

I have VPN Gateway to Gateway VPN tunnels set from my central office to four remote sites. The tunnels have always been problematic. Started out with five Linksys RV042 v2 devices these had problems with handshake, sometimes would disconnect during this process and had to click disconnect button on either device and this wouold force the tunnel to rebuild. Recently upgrade central device to a Cisco RV042 v3 device. Good news is that this seems to have corrected the handshake issue but now each of the remote sites are having problems during periods of inactivity losing tunnel. The staff at the remote site indicate that they have to close out application and restart router to rebuild the tunnel.
All tunnels are Gateway to Gateway static IP addresses. They all will connect and behave as expected until they reach a certian period of inactivity. I have searched all over Cisco, Linksys, and Google have seen problems similar but no consistant or logical solutions so I thought since I am slowly upgrading my network from my initial equipment which was truely purchased based on cost alone to adding more Cisco equipment. However since this is among the first of my upgrade moves and the improved equipment is creating more problems than my older less expensive equipment I needed a solution to the problem before submitting additional PO's to upgrade switches and firewall products.

I have a two RV042 VPN Router, I successfully connected the IPSEC tunnel. I cannot route Traffic in the tunnel. See the diagram.
MAIN Network
10.252.x.x
-------------->
FIREWALL
a.a.a.1
INTERNET
RV042a WANa <<------------------------------->> WANb RV042b
a.a.a.2 b.b.b.b
In this manner the network of b.b.b.b wil connect to the Main Network 10.252.x.x, unfortunately I can't pass traffic to RV042b going to RV042a. Everytime I trace the route, the traffic goes outside the Internet not to RV042a.

I've got a problem with my new Linksys E1200 (v1) router. It cuts the bandwidth of my PPTP connection with ISP (which is 50 Mbps) down to about 12 Mpbs. My firmware is the latest one (v1.0.03 build 4). I've done some reading and found out that it's pretty common problem between Linksys E-Series routers and ISPs that use PPTP/L2TP.

I setup my Windows 8 desktop for a PPTP VPN server so I can connect my iPhone 5 to it.Using the Cisco Connect Firmware, as I was having internet speed issues with the Smart Wi-Fi Firmware and I wasn't loving the interface of the Smart Wifi Firmware anyway.According to the router the firmware is up to date. All three VPN settings are enabled.PC is set to a static IP internally. 192.168.1.116 to be precise.PPTP port forwarding (1723) is set to the PC's static IP, though I have tried without port forwarding and it didn't work either. If I have my iPhone connected to the wireless network and point it to the internal IP address of the PC, I can connect to the VPN.If I bypass my router and hook my desktop directly to the modem (and point my iPhone to the IP that gets assigned to my desktop from my ISP) I can connect to the VPN.But if I have everything hooked up normally and try to connect to the VPN from my iPhone (using the IP address my ISP assigned to the router), I get a PPTP server not responding error.

here's my setup :
office 1 :
rv042 hw3
ISP:Obtain an IP automatically
office 2 :
rv042 hw3
ISP:PPPoE
VPN tunnel between both rv042, everything's fine but when i try to ssh from office 2 to an office 1's server, my connection drops.
When it drops, i can still ping pc in office 1, this is really strange!if i change the office 2 ISP to another provider (obtain an IP automatically) everything's ok !
i try to use another PPPoE ISP for office 2 and it's doing the same thing!I've also tried other rv042 in both locations with the same setup and it's doing the same thing, so it's not a router issue.
i've tried older firmware and it's doing the same thing, so it's not a firmware issue!

I have configured a VPN tunnel between two remote locations using static IP addresses on two RV042 routers. The tunnel seems to work but the problem is that when the two hosts attempt to ping each other only one can successfully ping. One PC with IP address 192.168.1.100 can ping across the network but the second PC with IP address 192.168.2.100 cannot. These are laptops seperate from the intranet used to test the tunnel. Someone had suggested NAT may be the issue so I enabled NAT Transverse on the routers but still no luck. The following is the results from a ping test.
PC 1
ping 192.168.2.1
Pinging 192.168.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time=116ms TTL=63

We have 4 RV 042 routers and cisco router at HQ, we have Site to Site VPN tunnels in between, All branch offices are connected to HQ via S2S VPN tunnels
10.10.1.0/ 24 HQ
10.10.2.0/24 Branch 1
10.10.3.0/24 Branch 2
10.10.4.0/24 Branch 3
10.10.5.0/24 Branch 4
now lets say i am branch 1, i can access 10.10.1.0/24 network but cant access 10.10.5.0/24 network, means i dont have branch to branch connection, it should be through HQ, means my RV042 at brnach should fwd all traffic to HQ for another branches also. Under VPN tunnel if i try to configure remote destination 10.10.0.0/21 its not allowing me it says network overlaping with local network, how i can sole it, I know how to do in cisco, we can permit those networks in access lists.

My University has free Internet at student homes, but we need to login by PPTP to get an official, public IPv4 and be able to reach the outside world. The network people at the University says that when the PPTP is up, everything should be open (no firewall of any kind).
have my WRT160NL that gets a 10.10.73.0/23 address from DHCP on WAN port. Currently I have 10.10.74.21. My internal network uses 172.17.17.0/24.My PPTP-server is located at 10.192.1.1 and when I connect, I usually get an IP in the 158.37.73.0/24-range. Currently I have 158.37.73.28. I use DynDNS to make sure I always know the public IP by the host binders.dyndns.info ...
So, I have Remote management enabled with HTTP and HTTPS, any IP and default port 8080. But no response from the outside world seems to go through. If I turn of the "filter ICMP" but keep the SPI Firewall on, I get ping reply from external sources towards my router, but still no HTTP or HTTPS response.I also have a Torrent I try to port forward to to be active, this is 23277, and this is the only thing that keeps coming up in the incoming log on my router.
It's not possible to connect to the routers management over the PPTP-tunnel?And why can't I get the port forward to work .. Same reason? PPTP 158.37.73.28 -> 172.17.17.100 (LAN) won't work?
