Cisco Wireless :: AP1242 Excessive Transmit Discards And Performance Complaints
Apr 15, 2013
I have an AP1242 near a couple of conference rooms. I get complaints when we have a large contingent in there and some try to download documents. The bandwidth consumption is meage - less than 2Mbps. But there could be say 50 people in those training rooms. I see no errors at the FE interface on the AP but I do see a good number of Transmit Discards.
Are 50 users connected to an AP1242 simply more than should be expected of the device? 802.11g is the radio.
Are transmit discards indicative of some kind of configuration problem? The users in these cases are generally very close to the access point - within a few feet even.
If it is indicative of a configuration problem would that be an issue of the configuration of the laptop wifi cards or a problem at the AP?

We have a Cisco 6513 Switch. During some parts of the day it is having large amounts of transmit discards on a certain interface because of the amount of data we are pushing. We have determined it is a link problem and not a problem with the switch. The link cannot handle the amount of packets the switch is pushing out. I was wondering if there is a way to create a buffer or a way to regulate the maximum amount of packets that can leave that interface without losing any packets?

After opening up Solarwinds NPM, I noticed that a few of my interfaces had lots of discards (who knows how long it's been sets the counters were reset)
interface GigabitEthernet1/0/25description Etherchannel to MamaCassswitchport trunk encapsulation dot1qswitchport mode trunkswitchport nonegotiatepriority-queue outchannel-group 4 mode on
interface GigabitEthernet2/0/25description Etherchannel to MamaCassswitchport trunk encapsulation dot1qswitchport mode trunkswitchport nonegotiatepriority-queue outchannel-group 4 mode on
interface Port-channel4switchport trunk encapsulation dot1qswitchport mode trunkswitchport nonegotiate,It looks as if priority-queue was configured outbound on these interfaces, could this be the cause of the transmit discards which are now up to 79,835, I just reset the counters on the interfaces a little while ago.
I'm not the best in the world when it comes to QoS, we do have some VoIP phones, but they are only a specific network, and do not travel outside, since there are used mainly for VoIP training. I do know both interfaces are running the default of FIFO.

I have been noticing in my trap logs that there are an excessive amount of Client Association/Authentication Failures. I cannot figure out why. I have a Cisco 5508 WLC with 81 AP's (1131ag, 1142abgn, 1262N) models. The wireless devices are on a Windows Domain and use 802.1x EAP authentication, authenticating the user and computer info with a RADIUS Server. I look at the logs and all it can tell me is Reason:Unspecified ReasonCode:1. I read that the Reason Code is due to "Client associated but no longer authorized" but to be honest I am not sure what that means.

Im looking for possibilities to remote recognize attached antennas to AP1242. I have a lot of devices which not working properly. I think most of them have only one antennas installed , but I cant be sure if its fitted into primary connector. Do You have any idea how to check numbers of attached antennas and if only one if its fitted into primary connector?
I want to disable diversity when I'll find APs with only one antennas.

I bought a RV110W wireless router a couple months ago that I've been pretty happy with.
However, I have one significant problem with it. It is configured to send syslog messages to an internal server. Twice now it has gone into a mode where it starts dumping messages like,
ip_conntrack_is_ipc_allowed: ipc_entry_is_full
continuously, at a rate of about 20 per second. It otherwise seems to function normally, but of course if unnoticed my syslog file quickly grows to hundreds or thousands of megabytes. A reboot restores normal operation. It is running firmware 1.1.0.9. A search on the internet turned up no information about this problem.
It may be some corruption is occuring in the router's OS, or perhaps this is something that can be triggered externally (in which case it would be a weak form of DoS attack? Or maybe worse if in this state it is unable to properly apply the firewall rules.)

I recently configured a Cisco AP 1242, software version 12.4, via the web interface using the default Cisco credentials. At that time I setup an administrator account with read/write access and changed the Cisco to a read only access. Now went I attempt to login to the web interface it won't accept the administrator password. It will except the administrator password in a telnet session however. So via the telnet session I setup another user with privileged exec level access and that wont work on the web interface either. The Login box keeps coming back requesting a password. Strangely enough, I can login to the web Interface using admin username, with the Cisco password; but I can't do anything, and I also can't view everything. I've tried the following:
I've turned on SSH and created a certificate in the AP, but the login box continues to pop on the https://url.I've attempted to setup a user with a non-encrypted password, but have been unsuccessful.I've tried a different browser - login box continues to pop.I've made sure the web interface is activated in the API've tried a differnet computerI've tried disabling password-encryption service. Reset the enable password , I've successfully setup other 1240 APs but must have done something wrong on this one.

I've got a Samsung Epic 4G and whenever I leave the wifi connected on my phone at home, it seems to never go into sleep so the battery drains overnight doing nothing. If I turn off wifi and leave it on the 3G network, battery barely drains at all. Is there something in my router that could be keeping my phone awake when it's connected. I've tested it on a friends wifi network and my phone sleeps just fine, it's only when I'm connected to my DIR-655.

I recently bought a Nintendo 3DS but unfortunately my University's wireless security (WPA2 Enterprise) is incompatible with the system. As such, I was looking for a way to transmit a wireless signal from my computer, and place an alternative form of security onto it (such as WEP), so that the 3DS can connect to it.
At the moment, my desktop is connected via ethernet cable, which plugs directly into a wall socket. I'm pretty unsure as to what to use, I've heard of things such as 'wireless bridges', but I'm not sure how they work. Also, I'm looking for the device to transmit a signal even if my desktop isn't turned on. Is a router my only option?

I am in the process of configuring Network Access Protection and just found out you can apply user based ACLs in the Network Policy. Will this work with a Cisco AP1242 in Autonomous mode? I saw some configuration guides for configuring User ACLs using the wireless controllers but not just Radius.
I have added the Vendor Specific Attribute of "Cisco-AV-Pair with two values of
-priv-lvl=15
-ip:inacl#10=deny icmp any any
I would expect all traffic to be denied when the user logs in due to the explict deny at the end of an ACL but I am not seeing that so I was unsure if Per-User ACLs work on standalone AP1240s.
I could add another rule to allow other traffic but I just want to see if the ACL would apply on a per-user/per-session bassis on the AP1200.

I am having trouble getting the bridge to work. The setting is as follows: I have to buildings, separated by a road. Distance is apx 35-40 meters. From the main building there is a network which I am trying to extend to the other building by a wireless bridge. I am using two 1242 (autonomous) for this. I have also external directional antennas (7Db) mounted on a pole 8 meters above ground on each buildings. These are of course directed to eachother. The antennacabel used between the ap's are shielded Cisco-cables.

We have a failover pair of load balancers (non-Cisco) which are connected to each other via Catalyst 6509Es with Sup720 supervisor cards. Failover is achieved by the newly active load balancer GARPing all its service IP addresses with the relevant MAC address in order to update nearby ARP tables (failover GARPs are fired out by the load balancers at a rate of 200 per second). Failing over services between these load balancers has been found to be problematic, with numerous services not failing over in a timely manner.
Some of the load balanced networks involved are routed on the Sup720s, the rest are routed on FWSM modules in the same chassis. Problems occur only with VLANs routed on the Sup720s; all VLANs routed on the FWSMs fail over without issue.
Investigation has shown that this is due to a proportion of the ARP table entries not being updated in the Sup720 and (with the default 4 hour ARP table timeout) subsequently requiring a manual flush of the "wrong" ARP entries.
Testing by throwing GARPs at both the FWSM and the Sup720 has revealed the following:
we can quite happily throw ~200 GARPs per second at the FWSM and all the relevant ARP table entries are updated with the correct MAC address. This fits with the sucessful failovers for any FWSM routed networks. however, repeating the same test with a VLAN routed on the Sup720 results in GARPs being dropped by the Sup720. The Sup720 keeps discarding a proportion of GARPs until we drop the rate of GARP to <~75 per second. We're not rate-limiting ARP anywhere in the Sup720 - hardware or otherwise - and the FWSM handles the rate of GARP without issue. Is there any built-in restriction on the Sup720 we're not aware of that would cause the observed behaviour, is it configurable.

I have one specific trouble with Catalyst 3560CG switch and Stardom reserved industrial controller. Controller has 2 processors, one of them after(!) negotiation become main with IP 192.168.1.1, other one stays in reserve with IP 192.168.1.129. If main one shuts down, spare one becomes main with IP 192.168.1.1. This perfectly works with DLINK and MOXA level 2 switches, but fails with Catalyst 3560, because spare one cannot even connect to switch port. I don't know the exact reason of it, but i suspect, that it happens because of before negotiation both controllers have ip 192.168.1.1 (i know, that it is wrong and weird, but so it goes). First of them correctly connects to switch port, which goes up and passes pings. Second processor tries to connect to switch port, which goes several times up and very soon down, then processor lefts his tries to connect to anybody and become idle. The switch seems to some way check IPs of 1-st and 2-nd port packets, and shuts down 2-nd port. I have connected via hyperterminal and tried to disable some level 3 functions and checks of the switch, but this wasn't useful. how exactly(or at least approximately) should i configure a switch to make this bundle work?

I am having an issue pinpointing why my 2821 router is discarding so many packets when transferring data to our second site. The traffic flows from the local lan, to the router, where it is redirected via WCCP to a WAN optimization device, back to the router and over a GRE tunnel to the second site where the same process happens. The traffic does get there, but the LAN/Repeater router interfaces have around 20,000-60,000 input drops an hour. From the output below, it looks like traffic is being dropped by the RP.
I just restarted the router as a last resort, and here is what has accumulated in the last 30 min:
FastEthernet0/0/1 is up, line protocol is up

I have an issue where I'm seeing output discards on pretty much all my ports configured for QoS. The switches are cisco WS-C3750V2-48PS running 12.2(50)SE1. There are four switches stacked using stack cables. The QoS implemeted was auto-qos with no modifications to the standard config. All ports are in queue-set 1. The phones connected are Cisco 7942's. Already did the standard check for speed duplex mismatch, crc's, runts, giants, etc...No discards before the QoS was applied. No bug ID's I could find regarding these switches and this IOS version. The one thing noticed is that 99% of all the drops are from queue's 2 and 4 or 1 and 3 doing the below command.
**I've limited the cut and paste as to not clutter the discussion until someone requests something else**

the Xbox part was a windows thing. The router, modem, computer, and monitor, are all on one powerbar. I have used the used-to-be-wired computer (I needed the ethernet cord for something else, haven't gotten around to plugging it back in.) and the wireless laptop loses connection periodically. ALWAYS lose connection on bootup. and also when doing power consuming things. SO, I believe it is a lack of power being sent to the router. wired connections would use less, thats why they are still active, but I assume the wireless transmitter needs more energy in order to function properly. I haven't used the old computer in a awhile now, but I assume if I plug the router into another outlet/curcuit I the problem wouldnt occur. Might need someone wiht more knowledge to confirm this, but I'm fairly certain this was the cause.

However I cant get it to connect to the router no matter what I do (i had it working for a few hours at one point but it dropped off again).I confirmed it wasnt the router but running a crossover cable from the laptop to my desktop, setting static ips on both. Now I can ping the laptop from my desktop but for some reason I cannot ping the desktop from the lappy. I've tried everything I can think of but no dice.

We have a major poblem going on with our VPN router. We have a 7206vxr router which has an mGRE tunnel forming EIGRP neighbourship with about 800 remote locations using GRE over IPsec.
We have a problem where the EIGRP neighbourship keeps flapping intermittently and this happens to 30-40 locations at one time and very frequently. What I noticed was that the GRE tunnel transmit bandwidth was showing as 8 Mbps. I guess there is an option to change it.Will this 8 Mbps limit cause any issues of EIGRP neighbourship flaps and will increasing the bandwidth useful.
We are also seeing output drops on the tunnel interface.

So C ---> S will become C ----> I ----> S. I read something to create a tunnel(ip add tunnel) between C and I and add a route between them ? I tried different examples but did not work at all.

I upgraded my 3602i survey ap the other day to the public image the other day and I have to say.. I've got it up and going of course, but I have a concern on the transmit power settings. Originally, the only option it gave me was MAX and -4, which I hadn't seen before, interesting.. -4 of what? 20? 17 probably or I though? At any rate, I went into the CLI to set the power manually, no issues there, though my options are not what I expected, maxing out at 25mw basically, which is fine but.. in setting it manually in CLI, the web interface reports an Error on transmit power. So.. does this work or not? Any survey with this image to verify it's power settings? 15.2(23c)
