Connect To NAS (synology DS411 SLIM) That Is Behind A Firewall?
Aug 22, 2011
I bought a Synology DS411 slim NAS which I want to access remotely. I made a DNS and did portforward in my router (Cisco by Linksys WRT160N v2. The problem is I am part of a bigger scientists network where all ports are closed so it wont work. I even tried installing a OpenVPN server on the NAS and then connect though that but with no luck.

We're just bought a Netgear WNR2000V3 router and everything is working great, except for our XBox Slim......We can't connect very often and the only way I can get a connection is by disabling all other wireless connections. (Wii, IPod Touch, IMac and Acer Aspire Laptop) My main computer is the IMac.

As a temp work around I have two SSID now, one for everything else running WPA2 and one for xbox running WPA. The xbox seems to not like the router on WPA2 and though this would make one think, oh its your xbox, thats not always the case with devices. Some just may happen to want to use a feature the device doesn't support correctly and other devices are able to work around it while ones not so I cant for sure blame on xbox.

Kinda narrowed it down to the ds1512+ to replace a whs2011 (that was made from a hp media server). No rush. Just upgrading. What is the refresh cycle? I can wait until the new servers come out.
I'm not smart or dedicated enough to build a box from scratch. I just want it to work neatly.

I am trying to set up a Synology VPN server thru a cisco RV220W and cannot get a windows 7 VPN client to connect to it. Access rule was created on RV220W to port forward 1723 and also made sure the same port was forwarded on the built in router on the Synology NAS box, running DSM4.1 and made sure VPN server was up and running. IP address of synology NAS is 192.168.1.250, mask of 255.255.255.0. DNSgateway is 192.168.1.1. Only running PPTP at this time.
When I run the windows 7 VPN client, I try to connect to the external internet addres:1723, make surePPTP is the only protocol and use a DNS of 192.168.1.1. When I try connect, I get an 868 error which says "error 868: The remote connection was not made because the name of the remote access server could not resolve."
When I try to ping port 1723, I do not get a response which leads me to believe that the issue is the router and not the NAS box. HTTP, HTTPS and FTP ports work fine.

I've been using the Dir-655 for 2 or 3 years with my old Xbox 360 and an external G wireless adapter. Everything was working perfectly until I got the dreaded Red Rings Of Death the other day. I replaced the Xbox with a new Slim version with built in N capable network adapter.
After more than 10 hours of trying a variety of "fixes" I found from MS and in this forum, I am still at square 1.
Hardware Version : A3
Firmware Version : 1.32NA (this is listed as Live compatible by Microsoft)
802.11 Mode : Tried N only, G only and mixed 802.11n and 802.11g
Enable Auto Channel Scan : Checked
Transmission Rate : Best (automatic)
Channel Width : Auto 20/40
Visibility Status : Visible
Security Mode : WPA-Personal Also tried WEP
WPA Mode : Auto (WPA or WPA2) Also tried WEP
Cipher Type : TKOP and AES
I tried assigning an IP manually from the Xbox. But, no matter what I do, the router will not accept it. It is especially frustrating that the Xbox is visible to the unit. It simply will not assign an IP to it under any circumstance.
If you read the sales hype promoting the Dir-655, you will see a lot of nonsense about it being great for gaming. Given that, you'd think a simple solution would have been found and posted for this issue by now. Surely, end users shouldn't be trying 100 different possible "fixes", none of which work, at this late stage of the firmware upgrades. If I sound a tad fed up, it's because I am. After the expense of the new Xbox, it appears I now have to junk my router too.
Here is the status screen taken when it was in mixed mode. Changing it to 'G Only' didn't make any difference:

I have a Server 2008 server and a Synology DS1511+ Nas.The goal is to make an iSCSI connection from the Synology to the Server 2008 server. However, I am having an issue. I set this all up two weeks ago. For two weeks it was all running fine. Now, my iSCSI drive is dropping daily. And everytime I go into the iSCSI initiator and click anything, the server still allows me to do some things, but it basically locks up. I can't restart, services stop responding, etc... The only was I can break it out of that is a hard reset. Why iSCSI initiator keeps taking down my entire server to the point of hard restart? Once this is solved, I bet the iSCSI dropping daily will be solved as well. I have already talked with Synology, the log is producing nothing and they are suspicious that it has been running fine the past two weeks. Windows update is off (I manually do it during scheduled maintenance), and there is no av or firewall running, so rule those out.

I've just bought a Synology DiskStation DS412+ and put 2 x 3TB Western Digital Red drives in it, set up in RAID 0. It's currently plugged in to my gigabit Netgear switch.I created a user with full permissions on the NAS, created a share, mapped a drive on my Windows 7 PC (also gigabit ethernet) and tried copying some files, but I'm getting painfully slow transfer speeds (< 40KB/s - yes, kilobytes, it's not a typo!
Does anyone have any ideas why it'd be so slow? There's loads of reports online of people getting > 80MB/s from this NAS.
I've copied files from this PC to my MacBook Pro in the past and got decent enough speeds so it shouldn't be an issue with the NIC on this PC, or (hopefully) the Netgear switch it's going through.

My friend has had constant issues with his wireless network using his dated Linksys router. So he finally decided to upgrade to the Netgear N750. It's a dual band router that simultaneously broadcasts 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. He setup the 2.4 band for the laptops and mobile devices to access, and the 5 band just for gaming on his xbox 360 Slim. He immediately ran into a problem. The 360 slim's built-in wireless card only picks up 2.4 GHz frequencies. To remedy this, he purchased Microsoft's xbox 360 wireless-N adapter as it can pick up 5 GHz frequencies. However, there was no change after plugging the adapter into the 360 slim. His HP laptop can see the 5 GHz network just fine, so we know it's being broadcast. Could it be the xbox is out of range of the 5 GHz band? Is the adapter not functioning properly with the 360 slim?

Let me explain my current situation before asking my question:I have a Motorola Netopia7347-44 VDSL modem/router (with WiFi). The type of signal that I get from my ISP is analogue for phone, TV and intenet. This modem has an input for the Internet connection (dynamic IP address) and provides the IP addresses and connection for the other devices connected to it (via WiFi or cable), such as the TV over IP box, laptops, iPads and smart phonesI would like to implement content filtering on my WiFi network in order to avoid access to some websites, and my modem/router doesnt provide this feature (or at least I cant find it with my ISPs configuration) thought about using OpenDNS, but since I have a dynamic IP address and I cant install an updater on all the devices, then this solution didn work.
The next idea I have is getting a physical Firewall.Question: I am wondering if I can just connect the Intenet cable (that comes from the splitter between phone and Internet) to the Firewall, then I connect a RJ-45 cable from the firewall to my existing modem/router and should that be all (besides configuring content filtering on the firewall)? What should I take into account regarding the IP addresses? Should I enable the DHCP server in the firewall (I assume that most come with one), and disable the DHCP server in the modem?

Today, out of nowhere (no known system changes) I was unable to connect to a network server at my office. I always connect with a VPN first....and that went fine. Then - when I tried to map to a network drive, it wouldn't connect. I get error code 0x80070035.When I disable my AVG firewall, I'm able to connect perfectly. So, I'm guessing I have to create some type of rule for my firewall, but I have NO idea where to get the info with which to do so. I'm running Windows 7 (64B) and have AVG Internet Security 2011.

I am transitioning from a Microsoft ISA server to a Cisco ASA 5510. So far so good, until it comes to getting AAA functioning properly. I have a Microsoft IAS server that is functioning properly, however when I try to test it through the ASA's ASDM it errors out. When I run a packet trace it shows it's being blocked by the dreaded implicit ACL. The funny thing is that I can ping and traceroute to the IAS server from the ASA. I found numerous config examples for AAA using IAS, but still not working.
Could it possibly be behaving this way because my ASA and my IAS server are on two different internal netowrks? (172.31.1.x-ASA, 10.1.1.x-IAS)

I'm trying to connect to something through an ASA.My traffic is coming in on a DMZ interface (security level 0) and going to something on a DMZ3 interface (security level 50).
From the GUI I configured NAT exemption from the source network (on DMZ) to the destination network (on DMZ3) therefore following the guidelines that the translation is set up from most secure to the least secure interface
I have no network connectivity to the host I need to get to From the GUI I removed the NAT exemption rule and configured a static NAT translation instead, translating the source (on DMZ) to itself (on DMZ3) - still no joy.The ACLs in place are fine, if I use the packet tracer tool, it fails at the NAT stage; [code]
I can't see what's wrong here. I've configured static NAT or NAT exemption between inside and outside or inside and DMZ many times over the last 10 years but can't work this out.the only thing I can thing of is that there might be a bug that affects DMZ to DMZ NATing, as everything between inside to DMZ and DMZ to Outside works fine.
