Connecting To Internet With Network Switch?
Mar 25, 2011
I am still not able to get internet access through my network switch. Where I want to have the switch, I have a TV (with LAN port), PS3, a network capable hard drive, and a iMac. I want to be able to connect the switch to the ethernet jack on the wall and then connect the components to the switch. So here is a map of what I want to do:Actiontech Router (FIOS standard) ---> LAN port on the wall ----->D-Link DGS-1005G switch---->PS3,hard drive, iMac, TV.When I try this setup, everything looks fine, but I do not have internet access. When I connect directly to the wall jack, I always get internet connection. I have tried two different switches, but still no avail.I have tried assigning static IPs to each of the systems, but have had no luck in getting them to connect. The LAN jack is wired directly into the actiontech router. The range on the router is 192.168.1.10-192.168.1.256 (192.168.1.2 is a dd-wrt range extender).

about 7 pcs on the network all using Windows 7 32bit. Switch - Router all wired
They are all connected to the network fine but one of them gets cut off from the internet sometimes and starts back up randomly. I changed to different ports on the switch same issue I didnt have the time to fully check it but Im gonna go back tomorrow my best guess is that its the wire but any other possibilities that may cause this I would like to know before I go if at all possible.

I have a hp pavilion dv7. Its running windows vista it will connect to my wireless network but not the Internet. I have many other wireless devices that connect fine (xbox 360, 2 iPod touchs, and another laptop). It will connect fine at my in-laws and my buddy's house. I don't know if this means anything but I set up the network on the HP. It worked fine hooked up throu an Ethernet cord. I know it's not the modem or router. In my network center it will identify the network and show it's connected but in the manage wireless networks window it says it's connected to an unidentified network. The router is a belkin.

(this part i am currently doing) on computer A and B i want to create an ad hoc net work to souly use the 1000M nics (for data sharing). I want to separate computer A and B so they wont use the 100 Mbit connection.

Just got an HDTV, has a load of fancy internet stuff, but only has a wired connection and I can't put my router in this room, and would rather not have to run a wire up from downstairs.
I'm guessing there is a way of connecting to the wireless on my laptop in this room, connect the laptop to the tv via an ethernet cabe, and bridge the connections or something so that my tv gets the internet from the laptop. That's gotta be possible, no? When I try it tho, the connections bridge, but the tv says "Gateway is not connected, gateway address wrong or unavailable". Using auto IP.

I am a ADSL user and connect to internet using bridge mode that is set in my ADSL modem/router. when I open My Computer in Windows 7 I see a list of other people in my Network section as shown below. Other problem is that when I want to go to my modem web panel by entering 192.168.1.1 in my browser, I see it tries to connect to other modems and if I enter default user/pass I can log into other peoples modem! Is that my ISP fault for misconfiguration?

I have a dell desktop that uses Windows XP. Today I was cleaning out some unwanted programs that I never use and just take up space. But I don't know if I deleted something that I shouldn't have, or what happened but I am now unable to use my wireless internet. It says that a "network cable is unplugged". I have checked my modem and it is working fine. My brother is receiving internet in is laptop.

I have a Linksys X5000 hooked up with my home pc. The internet I get is free though the private school's network I work at (across the street) through a LAN. With a bit of wrestling I got my desktop to connect with the internet through the Linksys like an ethernet switch.I can't get my wireless devices to connect with the internet without logging in as a guest, which is annoying to do every time, especially through my iPod. They will gain access to my network, but not the internet.
Since this is a school network, my IT guy gave me a static IP address to speed up up/downloads by disabling DHCP. Every time I try to do that I get a message that "the page at 192.168.1.1 says the value can't be equal." OK, so I try to change my router's IP to 192.168.1.2 and...no luck, same message. I love working with hardware, but networking is beyond me. I don't think I can log into the guest screen in my own house any more! I am getting a new tablet in 2 days and this just won't do.

Im looking to connect up 4 new pcs to network but I don't have enough wall ports. I thought I could plug cisco 2950 switch into the port on the wall and act like a hub. The switch configuration is default and there is only one vlan. How is it that it won't connect. Does it need a crossover cable.

The network card in my PC supports 1Gbit ethernet, my 2TB NAS also supports 1Gbit ethernet, however both of these are currently run through a 100Mbit cable modem/router thus reducing the connection speed. I was wondering if I purchased a 1Gbit switch and connected all my devices directly into that, then connected it into the cable modem, would the PC communicate with the NAS directly via the switch or would it go through the cable modem?

I have 1 Cisco switch 24 ports and 12 computers. The 12 computers are divided in three groups and every group is a different network segment.
question 1: I need that every group has communication with its own set of computers but no communication with the computers on the other segments. If I connect the computers to any port on the switch, can they communicate within its own groups? Can the switch pass the network traffic for all of them?
question 2; What I need to do on the switch to have them to reach the internet?

I'm new here but I'm not really new to networking. I manage small network but I just found out that I have some issues regards to speed. So what's the problemAs a main router/fw we have Fortigate 100A which then goes to a core switch SRW2016.This switch then handles two VLANS.The problem is that I have ports 5 assigned to VLAN 100 and port 6 to VLAN 101. They relate to DMZ1 (VLAN100) or internal (VLAN101).When I connect small unmanageable switch to port 5 I get very low performance (20kB/s internet, 2-3MB/s LAN) however when I plug in PC directly, I'm getting full speed.Port 6 with VLAN101 has the same unamangeable switch but no issues.Obviously you're thinking it's the switch - well I've tried replacing it allready. It's not the switch. Both ports have the same configuration (relating to their VLAN) but resolving it goes beyond my knowledge

A Layer 2 switch with IP Address 192.168.1.4 (Vlan0), subnet 255.255.255.0 is physically connected to ADSL Router with IP address 192.168.1.1 (which is also the gateway address for the switch). The problem I have is that all the devices connected to the switch can intercommunicate but are unable to communicate with devices connected to the Router. I guess this may be something to do with how the Vlan is configured on ADSL router?

I have two public IP's entering a location from two different sources. One is under our control and the other is a 3rd party. Lets say Ours: 1.2.3.1 3rd Party 1.2.3.2
One is coming in through a firewall/router and the other is a direct link. Each will come into a different network segment 192.168.200.0/24 and 192.168.210.0/24
some of the hosts one subnet will need to talk to the other.
My envisioned setup would be as follows.
1.2.3.1 will come in to the firewall/router into the managed switch. 1.2.3.2 will come in the the same switch but in a vlan The vlan will have a trunked port to the firewall/router to allow routing between the vlan (192.168.210.0) and the other subnet (192.168.200.0).

Have a Linksys E4200 router located in my basement and I am experiencing a puzzling wired connectivity issue as follows: Port 1 on the router is for my study, I have no problem getting connection regardless if I use my study's Ethernet jack or if I run a 5 ft. cable (hereinafter THE CABLE) from the router’s port 1 to my laptop (i.e., cabling does not make a difference).I then connect to router port 1 an EZXS55W Linksys switch (using port 1 on the switch and THE CABLE) and then connect my laptop to port 2 on the switch using a second cable. I am unable to connect to the network/internet even after rebooting both the cable modem and router.I then reconnect my study to port 1 on the router, I go to my study and connect the study’s Ethernet jack using THE CABLE to port 1 on the switch and using a second cable from port 2 on the switch to my laptop. …. I get an network/internet connection immediately ! FYI, I have had the exact problem with switches EZXS88W and SE2500 (no longer own this).
