D-Link DIR-655 :: Controlling Device Access On Network
Feb 6, 2012
I have a new audio/video receiver that has Apple Airplay functionality built in. Now the Airplay allows any Iphone/pod/pad/tunes device/computer on the same network to route music to the receiver without plugging in the device directly. Great concept but the execution allows any computer or iphone in my house on the network to take over my receiver with no questions asked and start playing.
So far I have failed to find a way to restrict or shut off Airplay on the device itself (other than disabling it's network). If there is anyway through networking or my DIR-655 router to control/restrict this access? What I would like in a perfect world is to keep all computers and wireless Apple I devices from connecting to the unit unless I allow it for that particular device/computer. In an imperfect world I would accept just blocking wireless devices from it but still allowing them full network connectivity otherwise. Some things I have thought of - Can I use static addressing for the A/V receiver but put it on a different subnet then what my router is set to? Is there some network control in the firewall that may limit access to the A/V receiver?

I have a Dlink DIR 615 , I can never get it to manage the time correctly, even without any down time the time always goes off by hours or days. I tried using an NTP server option... 3.ca.pool.ntp.org but it doesn't work.... so I am not able to schedule the internet effectively router that they have that keeps the time and allows them to control the Internet access that would be good. My kids are teenagers so sometimes it is like talking to a wall trying to get them to control their internet, I can easily block them entirely as I have Mac filtering set, and I will do this, but I would like to not have to constantly check to see if they are online which is easily done with Ipods.

We have 2 5520 ASA's working in an active/standby function at our central site. The remote agencies have control of their ASA's or other devices able to create VPN tunnels back to the central site. When a new remote agency wants to connect to our central site we assign them a network range that is routable on the central sites network. We ask that the remote agency NAT into the addresses we provided them. This way we are able to route back to them. We assign the interesting traffic and then they we start communicating by way of the tunnel.
Since the central site can't control the traffic coming in on the site to site tunnel other than just defining the interesting traffic AND we aren't able to control the NAT on the remote end how can I put an access list on the central site ASA to allow only certain ports and IP's by way of access list? Ultimately, I'm trying to limit traffic on the central site coming inbound to only allow traffic I want. I tried applying a group policy to the lan2lan site to site tunnel, but it failed for some reason. It actually prevented all traffic. Can I apply a group policy to a site-to-site tunnel?
I'm struggling here a bit as I don't have control of the remote end. They can NAT whatever they want to an address in the range we assigned them. The tunnels interesting traffic is set to full ip to the central site's destination. The interesting traffic on the central site is set the same. However, on the central side...I want to limit that traffic to only certain ports by way of an acl. If it is possible to assign a site-to-site tunnel a group policy and filtering is done in that method, can

I have 4 DAP-1522's bridging to a WNDR3700v2. Any device plugged into any of the 1522's can access the internet and can access shared drives etc. on any other device plugged into any 1522. I can access the WNDR3700 admin website from a device connected to a 1522.
However, no device plugged into a 1522 can access a device plugged into the 3700's ethernet switch. Likewise, the devices plugged into the 3700 cannot access devices plugged into 1522s.
Devices plugged into the 3700's switch can access the internet and can access each other.
I have changed network cables, power cycled all devices (PCs, bridges, routers, etc) at least once. I am running latest firmware on 1522's and 3700. In short, I've tried just about all the basic stuff.
It almost appears that the 3700's switch is acting as an isolated network. I would say that were true, except that I can access the router admin page from anywhere (any 1522 and directly connected to the 3700).
All devices are within the 10.0.0.x address range with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Again, I have no problems accessing the internet. Just the problem of devices plugged into a 1522 communicating with devices plugged into the 3700 and vice versa.

set up the wireless network at a friend's house, which is a large solid-brick house that winds from one end to the other. The current location of where the cable comes into the house is unfortunately on the far-left end of the house, which means that the right end of the house receives no signal from their DIR-825 wireless N router.
What I've been looking into is the best way to wirelessly extend the wireless signal to the other end of the house. It seems straightforward enough to use an ethernet cable and access point to extend a wireless network, but that is not really a good option for this house. After reading many forum posts (and not being an expert myself) it seems like it may be possible to wirelessly extend the wireless network with another router, although it appeared that this is much less common (if at all possible) with wireless N routers.
what device I need to accomplish what I've described above? Another router, or some kind of access point/bridge? I saw at least one rather expensive wireless N repeater online (a Hawking brand, I believe) but was hoping to avoid that option initially, but if that is the only way to go then so be it :-)

I have a cabled network printer, Xerox Phaser 6125n, that have always worked properly from my 3 desktop computers and my laptop.A few days ago, my old dlink router went dead, and I replaced it with the TP-Link WDR4300 router. Everything worked as usual afterwards, until I found out I could no longer print on my printer. I can access the printers web interface through the ip adress, change settings and such through the browser, but the printer has offline status in windows and print jobs never leaves the print queue in windows. I tried deleting the printer in windows (tried both windows 7 and 8) to reinstall it.

I just upgraded my wireless router to a D-Link DIR-655. I have 2 PCs and a network storage device (D-Link DNS 321) connected via ethernet to the router. I also have an xBox 360 connected wirelessly to the router. The xBox is able to connect to the internet via the router, but it cannot connect to (see) the PC's or the network storage device. It was able to do so with my old wireless router (a Belkin), but it stopped with the DIR-655.

I have a question reguarding the Cisco Secure ACS 5.2 and network access vs device admin access. We have our switches, routers, and firewall configured to use TACACS+. We also have configured our Wireless LAN Controller to use RADIUS for allowing for 802.1X authentication to the wireless network. We are using Active Directory for the backend user database and have assigned the users to different groups in AD. We have a Network Admins group to access the network devices and a Wireless Users to access the WLAN. The problem that we have is that everyone in the Wireless Users group can access the devices and run full commands on them. We want to limit the Wireless Users group from being able to do this. Is there a policy or config change that we will need to make for this?

In the absence of true QoS capability on the 4300, what is the best way to give bandwidth priority to one of my network devices?
I have an Apple Airport Extreme connected to my network. It is used to stream music from my Ipod to my sound system. I do this through my network (rather then connecting the IPod directly to the AE) so that I can connect to radio stations over the internet. The problem is that I'm getting random dropouts (pauses in streaming). I've shut down everything on the IPod to make sure that there are no Apps competing for WIFI resources. The dropouts happen even if there is little activity on the network (e.g., file downloads, youtube, etc.)
What I want to do is to get the 4300 to give top priority to the AE. How can I do this without QoS capability? Can I allocate more bandwidth to the AE when it is receiving streaming data?
Note: The AE is always connected to the network. It uses DHCP to get it's IP address. It is connected to the 5G band. Signal strength is typically 1 to 2 of 3 bars (average is 1.5 bars). The 2.4G band has a slightly higher signal strength but the same dropouts occur so the problem does not appear to be signal strength.

I need to make some perfomances (like up/down GRE tunnels) on Cisco ISR 2921 by sending SMS. It could be doing by using 3G modem like a Huawei and a server with some expect/SSH-scripts.
But ISR gen.2 has EHWIC-3G modules, which working with GSM networks and they can send/recieve SMS. I think, that it should be an EEM event or some another way to track comming SMS and process it by TCL-script — get a sender number, SMS body and make usefull perfomances on my router (up/down GRE tunnels in my case).
If I done this trick only by using an ISR router and EHWIC-3G module, it will be much more stable scheme in that we dont have extra components (server, modem) potentially may falls.
Unfortunately, there are too low information about configuring this modules (especially, SMS-part) and I dont find usefull for me.

I have 2 computers in my room which between them i very frequently share files between. Wirelessly they were both connected to my home's router until recently the router was removed, but will be back soon. The problem though, was that with using the router, file sharing between those computers was slow, and with the router gone, I was lost because there was no movement of data between the computers whatsoever, I had no crossover cable, but plenty of regular ethernet cable. Than I remembered something about gigabit lan not needing crossovers(both of the computers being gigabit) and I connected them, and marveled at the new way to share files. And more by the exponential boost in speed(800kb/s to a grand 12mb/s{though I still think that is slow for gigabit.}). Obviously I've overcome a problem, but that's not where this story ends, it comes with another problem. When the router is reconnected to these computers, will the files still transfer through there new found direct connection? or will it attempt to go through the router, only allowing me to get the speeds I want when one of these computers isn't connected to the router?

I have a DIR-655 Rev B, in a typical cascaded config: modem > dir-555 > switches & devices, etc.One of the four dir-655 ports is connected to a cheap-o Belink Wifi router which I use as an access point (I only use this because there's one device that only supports WEP). I was debugging a WiFi issue and I pulled the plug on this Belkin just to get it out of the picture. Well, when I did that, EVERYTHING that was connected through the DIR-655 lost connection. (Well, all the wired stuff anyway- not sure about WiFi devices through the DIR-655). I noticed that the port link light for the powered-off device stayed on on the DIR-655. When I unplugged the cable from the DIR-655, everything went back to normal.
So what I'm trying to figure out now is, is this a DIR-655 issue, or is it something screwy with the Belkin? Or Both? I've got to assume that there's some inherent flaw in the DIR-655 that allows something connected to a port to screw up everything that it's hosting.

Internet access is working fine, however I cannot get my computers to work on the network therefore cant share any files or play any network games. The router is set up as DHCP server therefore IPs are automatically assigned, this is setup on the PCs and the router. The work group is also set. Exactly same settings basically as my old router which worked fine but wont on this one! I have 3 wired PCs and a wireless laptop. 2 PCs are windows XP the other is Windows 7 and the laptop is windows 7. The wireless win7 laptop will recognize my win7 wired PC and vice versa and can share everything without problems, but they wont have anything to do with the wired winxp PCs, on top of that the 2 winxp wont recognize each other either so don't think its anything platform specific. I have also tried setting up static IPs for each computer - still no joy. This is a brand new D-Link DIR-655 Rev B1 firmware 2.00

I have a TP-Link TL-WR720N wireless router, and I am trying to set it up so that it limits the times that my kids can access the internet. I have included screenshots of all of the programming pages, so you can see exactly what I am looking at. Here is what I have done so far:
Schedule: I created several schedules for different days, weekdays, weekends, start at 1900, end at 2100, etc.
Host: I created a host name titled "All", and set it for 192.168.0.3 ~ 192.168.0.199. The router assigns from 192.168.0.2 thru 192.168.0.199. I assigned my computer's MAC address as the "Parent PC", and bound it to 192.168.0.2, through the "IP and MAC Binding" function. In this manner, I hope to limit the kids access, while allowing the parent PC to access it at any time.
Rules: I selected the option to "Allow" passing of packets during these hours. I then created rules, assigning the host "All" to the different schedules that I created. I set the target as any, and did not set up any targets in the target section, because I do not want to control what sites they visit (yet, anyway). I generally don't worry about the sites they visit, I just think they spend too much time on the internet.
Here is what happens. I use my laptop (not the parent PC) as a test machine. When trying to access the wireless, i have verified that the router does give me an IP address within the specified range I created in the schedule. If I set the Access Rule to "Allow" the packets to pass through the router, and try to connect during the time it is set for, it will not allow my laptop to even connect. The weird thing is, if I set it for "deny", I can connect, but I have no internet access. Either way, if I have any of the rules enabled, I cannot access the internet at all. Thinking maybe there was some sort of conflict with schedules, I tried enabling only one of the rules instead of all of them, with no change.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to set targets? If so, does this mean I have to set one for every site I want them to be able to visit? Can I set a target as the IP address of the router? If so, what ports do I use?

We have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router that has had no problems until today. Our laptops (with Windows XP), iPods, and iPhones all show that there is an excellent wireless network connection (as usual), but none of the computers or devices will connect to the Internet. I tried resetting, rebooting, and unplugging the modem and router. The router and modem seem to be fine. When we disconnect the router and plug the laptop directly into modem, we have Internet connection (i.e., it's not the IP).

I have 2 Windows 7 desktops that are both connected to seperate vonage boxes and those vonage boxes are connected to my D-Link DIR-655 router. That D-Link router is getting its connection from a Comcast router. I am looking to get one of the desktops to share a printer from the other one which has it hard wired via USB cable. When I first set this up I did not have the vonage boxes and the desktops were connected right into the router and everything worked fine. Now that the vonage boxes are in place it is a mess. I can get internet fine on both machines, but no file/printer sharing. I have followed all the steps to setup the correct workgroup and file and printer sharing options on both windows 7 machines but they cannot see each other at all. My feeling is that now that the vonage boxes are there that instead of the desktops looking at the D-Link router for its sharing option they are looking at the vonage boxes and that is why they cant be seen. Does this make sense? Is there a firewall on the vonage boxes stopping these two desktops from seeing each other? Do I have to change something on the D-Link router options for it to give access to the vonage boxes for these 2 machines to see each other for printer/file sharing?

1. To specify static IPs for components on my network, is it simply a matter of reserving each component in the DHCP Reservations List portion of the Network Settings page?
2. On the same page, in the DHCP Server Settings portion, if Enable DHCP Server : is deselected, does this mean that only the hosts specified in the DHCP Reservations List can access the network? In other words, is access now restricted to these entries?
3. If the DIR-615 is powered OFF, will the above settings, etc. be lost (similar to a reset)?

As you can see it's a simple network, I mostly use the network to share itunes library from PC CENTRAL to the other pcs, play games like counter strike and the like, and of course share the internet connection and copy files from one to another. I have to puntualize that all the computers are in the same room.Last week my mom bought a Toshiba Satellite and I bought a TP-LINK TL-WR741ND so she can work in her room (which is pretty far if I want to make a wire connection), so I installed the WiFi but now this is how my network looks like:> The case is that:
a) I can't access my toshiba from any other computer, but the toshiba can access any other using \192.168.1.# command.
b) The PC Central's iTunes library can be played in toshiba's itunes.
c) I can't make an HomeGroup between the two pcs running w7. Actually the only one pc I want to be working in LAN with the toshiba is PC Central, but as I said earlier, PC Central can't access toshiba.
The settings in the TL-WR740N are: WAN working as Dynamic IP (got IP 192.168.1.46 submask 255.255.255.0 and gateway empty), lan 192.168.0.1, (I can't make it to be 192.168.1.#, I think that's impossible cause it always gives me an error 5008). MAC filtering and that's the only thing I changed from default settings.

There are two computers next to each other that both use this exact same adapter and I've tried swapping them between the PCs to see if one adapter worked better than another. They both work in one PC and neither work in the PC I'm having trouble with.
