General Networking Books For Basic Networks

Jul 1, 2011

I am an accomplished developer in Microsoft technologies, however networking has always been my weak point. I have always managed to be in jobs where my lack of knowledge in networks has not affected me, so I have never bothered to learn anything. Are there any good books out that would teach me the basics of things like tcp/dhcp/vpn/dial up networks/routers and other netwokring terms.

Home Network :: Basic Networking Terms And Devices?

Mar 28, 2012

Modem - (MODulator/DEModulator) This converts your xDSL analog signals into a digital format for use on your home network. A modem can also be part of a Router/Modem combination device. This device typically sits at the very edge of your network at your ISP's demarcation point (the point from where their responsibility for equipment ends).

Router - A router serves to 'route' information from network to network. I.e. A router will route information between the network 192.168.1.0 and 172.16.1.0. Generally your home routers will come as a modem/router/wifi access point package. It will basically route packets of information that are generated on your LAN (Local Area Network) to the internet, and in turn, route packets from the Internet to your LAN devices.

Wifi access point - Obviously provides a wireless Ethernet signal so that you can connect wireless devices to your home network. Typically, the wireless access points you will see will come as a combination of router/modem/wifi point. You can buy extra wireless access points (not wifi routers) and place them strategically throughout your home to increase signal coverage.

Switch - Uses hardware addresses to 'switch' packets through the LAN. Normally a domestic router will have 3 or 4 switch ports built into it. However, switches do come as standalone devices and can be used to increase the breadth and scalability of your home network by using the extra ports they provide to patch in more devices.

Host - A host is basically your PC, iPad, smart phone, laptop that is situated on your home network.

NAS Drive - (Network Attached Storage) Contains storage space that can be used as network a share by connecting it your home network.

NIC - (networt interface card) this is the component that allows your PC/Laptop to be hard wired into your router or switch. It will have an RJ45 jack so that you may connect Category5 and onwards patch leads into it from your router or switch. This talks with your computer's main motherboard and operating system to give you network connectivity.

MBs vs Mbps - MB = Mega Bytes (this measures file size) and Mbps = Mega bits per second (this measure network throughput).

Wireless card/receiver - as above but wirelessly.

Networking :: Basic Vlan Stuff With FS726T Switch

Feb 13, 2011

Its just a basic question, I have a FS726T switch, and wanted to know how the clan thing should work.

Group A are ports 1-8
Group B are ports 9-16
Group C are ports 17-24

Internet is on port 26

I want each group seperate so 3 vlans... but does port 26 need to be in all 3 vlans for.them to receive internet? Is it possible to have 1 port in 3 vlans?

Would that keep them from seeing each other and still access the internet?

Windows Vista Home Basic SP1 Cannot Find Any Networks

Sep 13, 2011

I am running 32 bit Vista Home Basic SP1.I cannot get online. When I hover the mouse over the network icon in the notification area, it reads, "Connection status unknown. The dependency service or group failed to start". When I try to diagnose the problem, I can't because the Diagnostics Policy Service is not running. When I try to Start the service, access is denied (Error 5). Same scenario for the service DHCP Client. When I click on Start/Connect To - I get the msg Windows Cannot Find Any Networks Meanwhile, I keep getting warnings that my firewall is not enabled. When I try to enable it, I get a message that the Security Center can't turn it on.

Windows Firewall is not listed in services.msc.I ran a full Malwarebytes scan and it found nothing wrong. I did a system restore to several days before the problem, but even though the restore completed successfully, it didn't change my (non)results. The Network and Sharing Center does not display the familiar PC monitor icon with a line to the Network and another line going from the Network to the Internet. Instead it just has the word Unknown with the caption the depencency or groiup failed to start I have heard that this might be due to a permissions issue, but when I use regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServices and right click on Dhcp, select Permissions, I get an error when I try to add anything (either Local Service or Network Service).

The msg is c:Windowssystem32adsldp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again..I have run sfc /scannow as well as chkdsk /f. Scannow reported that it found some problems but was unable to fix all of them. Chkdsk found and corrected about 10 errors, but neither of these programs worked with the issue.Additionally I have downloaded and installed Process Monitor on the PC, but the amount of information displayed is overwhelming, and I'm not sure what to check. Every time I try to start DHCP I get about 200 lines of info on the screen.

When I open a command prompt and run ipconfig /all, I get that DHCP is running, although it is not. I get the bogus ip address of 169.254.... I get a default gateway of zeroes. Is it possible that this behavior could simply be the result of a bad NIC card? Can I possibly run an in-place upgrade from Vista Home Basic to Vista Home Premium? If it's a Dell PC and I have the Dell Premium CD will it ask me for the product key? If so, will the key on the Basic PC work?

Video Stream And General Download Freeze?

Sep 19, 2012

I think there is a problem with the settings on my router or something like that. When I watch videos on streaming sites the load bar tends to go up but only so far before freezing. If you slide the button along once the umbrella spinny thing gets going then the load bar will kick back into life again for a few seconds before freezing! The problem also effects downloads. Anything that takes longer the 5 or 10 seconds will fail. This has stopped me downloading simple things such as iplayer and flash updates. I know its not a problem with my computer as it effects all the machines that pass through the house. Were currently getting Virgin wireless broadband (so I dont think its a speed issue).A tecky friend of mine thinks it might be something to do with the 'packets' of information or the channel that my router is operating on

Today, the PC will not connect to the internet. The Network and Sharing center in control panel shows that the PC is connected to both the wireless network and the wired network, but with no internet connectivity. All other computers and devices in the house are able to connect to the internet. Tried restarts, virus scans, router power off/on, ipconfig /release and renew, all with no luck. When I try and ping other computers in the LAN or the router I get a "General Failure" message.

Cisco :: Switch Port General Allowed Vlan 2 For Admin And 10 For LAN?

Sep 22, 2012

Me and my friend is currently setting up a Xen test environment. As you can se from the picture below we are running a Cisco ASA 5505 to reach the network from the outside. But the problem is that we want to reach the virtual pfSense's subnet's through the Cisco AnyConnect VPN. And currently the pfSense's are only configured with a public ip and a virtual interface to the VM's.could solve this problem by buying another PCI NIC, so that we have a physical link from the "pfSense box" to a tagged VLAN on the switch. But we are having problems configuring the switch to general vlan's. Cause Xen can't have it's management interface on a tagged VLAN directly from the XenServer, but the switch can tag the packet when it reaches the switchport. I would like to have "switch port general allowed vlan 2" for admin and 10 for "LAN"And then trunk the port to the Cisco ASA. But again, Xen stops me from doing this.

Cisco Wireless :: 1200 General Approach To Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Disconnects

How to troubleshoot transient wireless network drops?

- A WLC (except 5500) does not consume a license but only the Lightweight APs.

Networking :: Wireless Networking On MT3707

Oct 23, 2011

I recently installed a very basic version of XP on my old laptop (Gateway MT3707).After hours of searching for the correct drivers, I found them, and installed them. After installing the correct drivers for wireless internet I was able to pull up the list and find my network on it.When double clicking on our wireless network it asks for a network key (also called WEP key or WPA key). Now we have a password for our network, but after an exhausting amount of tries that won't work. I not sure if that is what its looking for. In our apartment we run mac OSX, windows vista, etc., but usually the password for the network is satisfactory. I have never ran into this problem.I hate to be a noob, but I don't know where to go from here.

Cisco WAN :: 1002 - ASR Not Doing Basic Routing

Dec 25, 2012

I have 2 sub net directly connected to a ASR 1002. This is the configuration

interface GigabitEthernet0/0/0
ip address 193.145.14.114 255.255.255.252
negotiation auto
....

The interface gi0/0/0 is connected directly to 193.147.14.113/30 in another router. And the Gi0/1/1 is connected to my internal infra structure. From my router I can ping 193.145.14.113 . So. I configure my PC with default-gateway 193.147.107.3 (ASR).

From my PC

I can ping 193.147.107.3 (gi 0/1/1)
I can ping 193.145.14.114 (gi 0/0/0)
But I can not ping  193.145.14.113 (the other point connected to gi0/0/0)

Why???? It is a IP inside of a sub net directly connected to the ASR. Why the ASR is not doing routing? ip routing is enable.

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5505 - Basic Web Access

Nov 27, 2011

I have a Cisco ASA5505 running the latest asdm and ios.

Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.4(2) Device Manager Version 6.4(5)206

I am trying to get basic web resolution and access but not having any luck. I just wanted to know if there is anything special that I needed to do with the ASA before I can do this. I've made a quick visio diagram of the network, see below:

The Vigor has a local sub net of 192.168.0.x/24 however there is also a "For routing use only" option. See below: {URL}. I'm hopeful that by configuring the "For routing use ip address" as one of my allocation of public ip's, that it should work okay. I can actually ping by IP and name from the interface of the ASA but can't do that or browse to websites from clients which have their default gateway set to 192.168.0.252. I was under the assumption web browsing should work out of the box almost as it's treated as an outgoing connection. Here is my config for you to look at: (note, I've tried to set the route outside to the local ip of the dray tek and also the "For routing usage only" IP address).

ASA Version 8.4(2)
hostname gilwoodasa
domain-name gilwood.local
enable password 9PvFytIZ2Vpy8Gon encrypted
passwd 2KFQnbNIdI.2KYOU encrypted
names
...

So, if you're still reading this - all I am after is a way to get basic web browsing working. Here are the logs which show the attempted web access.

Jan 3, 2013

I am struggling to get this working after spending many hours looking at it I am now completely stuck. We are upgrading from a 857W to this 887 VA-M I have some experience of IOS and the 800 series. Our 857W works perfectly using almost the same config. Our situation is that the router will sit in front of our firewall and act essentially as a simple router passing everything through to our Firewall. Nat is done at the Firewall.

We currently have the following configuration that seems to connect the the ISP fine but I cannot connect to the vlan2 port on the switch the firewall cannot connect to he internet or route anything via the Vlan2 port no pings etc.. I am using Fast Ethernet 0 as the Vlan2 port and the rest are V LAN 1 with a local network address to allow me to connect a laptop.

We have a block of static IP addresses, the base of which is assigned to the V LAN 2 interface and used by Dialer 0 as IP Unnumbered. Config below.

Cisco WAN :: 800 Series Router Basic Configuration

Sep 4, 2012

I have just bought my first non-domestic router, a CISCO 887VA-K9 which needs basic configuration to get it working.  I have a copy of the configuration guide (334 pages) and CP Express user's guide (94 pages) and have spent an hour reading but either they are missing something or my brain is too small to figure out step 1.  How to get started.  Perhaps from where to download a CP Express installation kit for Windows.

Is the only way via a terminal emulator connected via a serial port ?  Is there a graphical interface I can use ?  Are there any basic tutorials for beginners ?  This is probably the only non-domestic routrer I shall work on so I don't want to invest in a full training course.  I just need enough to plug in the ISP credentials and set up DHCP.
