How Network Address Translation Works
Apr 18, 2011
How Stuff Works "How Network Address Translation Works"."This is where NAT (RFC 1631) comes to the rescue. Network Address Translation allows a single device, such as a router, to act as an agent between the Internet (or "public network") and a local (or "private") network. This means that only a single, unique IP address is required to represent an entire group of computers." so let's say 6-7 pc's can have access to the internet using the same IP. doesn't this causes any problems? what if one of those pc's was used fore doing something illegal? how can they spot it later on? or what if 2 or more pc's access (from that subnetwork) access the same website with the same IP?

We've got an application that is running on our LAN that is using IP addressing to connect to the server (they refused to use DNS).The server is now being moved to a VM which will be on a different subnet. The supplier is now concerned that there will be a big down time due to him having to reconfigure each device (about 100) with the new server IP. If the server was external I know I'd be able to do NAT on the FW to make this work but can it be done internally on my 6500s? I want to have the devices pointing at their hardcoded IP address off 1.1.1.10 and NAT the destination to the VMware servers IP 2.2.2.10? Is this possible using cisco NAT?

In my router I can set rule that all traffic incoming to router's extAddr:8888, is forwarded to my intAddr:8888. But I also need reverse rule that packets originating from intAddr:8888 are translated to extAddr:8888. Can I do that? What technique can I search on google to find more information, because it is not port forwarding. I would calll it reverse port forwarding or static port address translation, but I do not find anything useful in internet searching these keywords.

Is it possible to perform static Nat's through an internal network?I have a ASA 5510 with a public outside interface (let’s call it 68.68.68.1), and I have an inside private IP address (192.168.1.2/24). The inside IP address leads to a 4900m with that interface being configured with a 192.168.1.1 (no switching). On the 4900 M I have several VLANs one of them is an internal DMZ of sorts. (192.168.2.0/24). Within this DMZ network are several Web servers which need to be associated a public IP address (68.68.68.x).
Every time I configure a static Nat to associating a public IP address with an internal IP address within the DMZ, packet Tracer on the ASA informs me that the packet gets dropped at the static Nat and I cannot figure out why this is so.Safe it to say my question still stands is it possible to Nat (68.68.68.222 to and 92.168.2.60) given the configuration above, and how would I go about configuring in such the manner above so that I acn apply static nat through the 192.168.1.0 network to reach the 192.168.2.0 network.

I'm working on a friends laptop that used to connect wirelessly to their network no problem, and all of a sudden it would no longer connect at all. It a 5 year old Gateway laptop running Windows XP Media Center. It just hangs at "Acquiring network access" and never connects. I'm pretty sure it's their network because it works on my home network perfectly, connects and stays connected.
Can you give me some pointers to do to the laptop and/or the network? I normally would start fresh with the wireless network, but they have a bundle package of AT&T (internet, phone & TV all-in-one) so the router is branded AT&T and don't want to mess any of that up.

I have 5 static public IP addresses assigned by my ISP. I like to use one of these static public IP addresses to access one of my PCs in my office from the outside. So I like to configure something like:65.11.22.44 <-> 192.168.1.100.This translation is good for all protocols and all ports. Where I can configure this on the DIR655?

I have a server in a DMZ of my 8.4 ASA with nat:
object network FTP-SERVER
host 192.168.1.102
nat (dmz, outside) static interface tcp ftp ftp
And that's working well. However, I now need to translate the source address of connections from the outside to the FTP server as well. The aim is that the source address of packets when they reach the FTP server is an address on the DMZ subnet (as the default route for the FTP server now needs to be something else, not the ASA) as well as this outside-dmz NAT. I thought overloading the DMZ interface of the ASA? Or another IP in that range?

I am trying to correctly configure our ASA 5520 and our Mitel Border Gateway in our DMZ. In the documentation for the Mitel border gateway it wants me to set up 2 external IP's on my ASA one to allow 443 traffice into the MBG, and another for 443 traffic that needs to be forwarded to port 4443 for the MGB in the DMZ. My problem is I don't know how to do this. the MBG only has one IP, and I need to have 2 different URL's mapped to two different external IP's both externally using port 443, and one of them forwarding to 4443 on the DMZ interface.

I have an 8.3(2) ASA with a single outside IP. Dynamic PAT translates inside addresses to the outside interface address. I would like to use static NAT with port translation to access an inside syslog server. I got an error when I tried using the outside interface address. Can I use both dynamic PAT and Port Translation with the same outside address? This is what I would like to use but I receive an error saying there is an overlap using the outside interface address.(192.168.1.0 is my inside network. 10.10.1.10 is the outside interface IP.)
object network inside-net
subnet 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
nat (inside, outside) dynamic interface
object network SYSLOG_SERVER
host 192.168.1.50
nat (inside, outside) static 10.10.1.10 service tcp ssh ssh

1. the LAN network (multiple subnets) needs to access server 1(outside) - NAT translation works fine no issues
2. a subnet from the LAN e.g SUB-TEST currently acceses server1 but I need to change it to access TESTserver 2 (outside) instead (temporarily)
I dont want to change the original setup .I am trying to implement NAT on the local router such that
- any traffic from SUB-TEST that enters the inside interface and is going to Server1 then change the destination and NAT it to TESTServer 2
- all other LAN traffic is allowed to go to server 1.
i am using a 1941 router for this

I have been struggling to find a DDNS provider from which the IP address can be updated from a Cisco device. One does not seem to support it, (Free-DDNS) other must be paid for (No-IP.org) while the free version does not update the IP address in my case, etc, etc.The device that is directly behind my modem is a Cisco 1801 router. My question is, which DDNS provider works for you when auto-updating the IP address via the Cisco router?

I'm about to take it downstairs to see if itll work again

We have a lan connection using only switch in a department. No router, no internet at all. Every body is assigned manual lan ip like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2, etc and subnet 255.255.255.0, to access some resources between the computers. Today we formatted one computer in the lan network and changed it to windows 7 from xp, then put manual like before like 192.168.0.x but now it shows "unidentified network" though it works. I mean even though it shows unidentified network it works and it can access the other computers.I wonder then why it shows unidentified network now, before formatting in xp it was showing connected or enabled. Even now in other computers, it's good.

We have a legacy client/server application, an OCR system. The server runs on Windows 2003 R2. We have client machines running happily on Windows XP.We have for a while had problems with getting the clients to run on Windows 7. Some machines wouldn't work, others worked intermittently, one worked consistently. By a process of elimination I discovered that the one working consitently was on a desk where we had put a small 8 port 3Com gigabit switch on the desk to give us more network ports. If I move this switch to any other desk to one of the non-working clients and connect them using the same uplink but going through the desktop switch they start working. The XP clients work fine using any of the network switches. None of the 100+ devices on our network (desktops, laptops, VoIP phones, printers etc) are showing any other signs of network issues, only this OCR application. The application was last updated in 2004, so was not designed for Vista or 7, essentially the vendor is no longer updating it, but say that as far as they are aware it works with Windows 7.why adding a 3Com 3c1670800B switch between the client and the rest of the network should make the application work with Windows 7. Whilst I have a workaround for the problem I'm uneasy that I don't understand the root cause, and if I was to press ahead and move the client machines to Win7, the whole system depends on a single piece of kit that's now discontinued and I only have one of. It all seems pretty counter-intuitive to me that an application should be sensitive to low level network hardware.

My cable modem and router are in a closet. From there, wires run through the house to multiple locations. One of the locations has had a wireless access point (WAP) installed which has worked flawlessly. I want to put another device at that location that doesn't have wireless capability, so I tried to connect a switch. The switch does not connect. When I disconnect the cable from the WAP and plug it into the switch, the light on the switch port that would indicate a connection does not come on. When I then connect the WAP to another port on the switch, the light on its port does come on but it does not see the router. I've tried multiple cables (I even tried a crossover cable) and I've tried a second switch with the same result. When I plug back into the WAP, it works fine again. The switch works fine at other locations in the house.
One more thing - When I bought the house, the wire to this particular location was unterminated. I had never done any wiring before but I decided to try to do this myself. So, I read up on the process and bought the necessary tools. When I stripped the wires, I found that the twisted pairs were not just twisted (as they were in the patch cable I practiced on) but each pair was in a single strand of insulation (I'm not sure exactly how to describe this but there were four strands of plastic, each with two wires packaged inside.) I didn't know how to separate the two wires that were packaged together so I wired the connectors with all four color - color/white pairs next to each other. I know that's not the standard. But from what I read, as long as I wired both ends of the cable the same way, everything should work. And in fact, it did for connecting the WAP.

I plug the Lenovo in to the Ethernet cable in my office, get link & data transfer lights, connect to the internet, everything works.Bring it out to different office (it's replacing an old XP machine, which connects on the cable I'm about to mention)Plug it in to ethernet, no lights, Network Cable is Unplugged.Plug cable back into old XP machine. It connects.
Bring out a Win7 Home Premium SP1 laptop. It connects.Plug back into Idea center, nothing. Drag idea centre back into my office. It works again. The Idea centre is new, so it's never worked on this area before. Also, I have 3, and they're behaving identically. ALSO, sometimes when I plug in the Ethernet cable the green and yellow indicator lights will blink once at me, and then never again.
The cable's good, works with 2 other machines. The port/NIC card is good, works in my office, the only difference between the two locations is that I have an extra router in my office that I don't have in the office the Lenovo is going in, so it MUST be something in the settings, but I can't tell what's different between the machines that work and the Lenovo.

MY ISP is AT&T. I have their Westell DSL modem, with a bridged connection to a Linksys wireless router. The router is connected via ethernet to a dead computer: a 7 year-old Dell desktop that will boot up but shut down right away. I have been able to connect multiple laptops wirelessly to this network. I thought an ethernet connection was required in a home network such as mine? The cable has been plugged into a dead computer for several months and frankly I'd like to get rid of the desktop. What exactly is the ethernet requirement - just to be plugged into a port? Could I theoretically just yank the ethernet card out of the desktop and use it instead of the whole dead system?

I bought a DIR-655 for my parents after their old router died in a planned power outage. It's a rev. B1 model running the 2.00 firmware. It worked fine initially for a day or two with great wireless coverage, even in the previously low-signal spots in the house. Then the problems started. The router now has trouble loading any website. What you get is instead a page returned from the router saying something along the lines of "network unreachable, please check you internet settings" (I will go there today or tomorrow so I'll update the post with the specific error). Refreshing the page a few times sometimes makes it load, but extremely slow and then the same thing happens again a few moments later. The same thing happens on both wifi and through the router's LAN ports. If I connect a computer directly to the modem it works just fine, as it has always done before getting this router.I have disable QoS, NAT endpoint filtering and the firewall (SPI). I have also set the WAN port speed to 100Mbit/s in the router, to match what the modem is set to (also had issues with the default setting).
