View 14 Replies View Relatedhow to block a user from using the internet when they plug their computer into a router. My roommate has refused to pay her share of the internet and, being a college student, I don't have enough money where I feel generous enough to let her have free internet after stiffing me. Basically, I have 2 routers at the moment (hoping to fix this soon): my Qwest modem works as a router but I also have a Linksys router connected to it. The only phone jack is in her room so I have no way of stopping her from plugging her computer straight into the modem and/or router. I've configured the wireless so that she would be unable to access the, wirelessly but I'd like to know how to prevent her accessing the internet when she plugs her computer directly into either component.

View 3 Replies View RelatedVery recently whenever I download a file which is in a package e.g. a rar file or an iso it always seems to be corrupt. For example I downloaded the windows 8 consumer preview multiple times and each time was corrupt. Now I know it isn't anything to do with my computer as I have this problem on all devices connected to my internet including my ps3, every game I download is corrupt and I cannot install it. I've tried all the obvious things like turning the router on and off and plugging the device directly into the router via ethernet

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently switched providers and now i'm down to a 1.5 MBPS download speed (advertised at 3 MBPS but our area is only serviced for half that) so I'm trying to find something that will smooth out the capabilities of my PC's with streaming videos and such for my nephew on sites like disney.com and other sites. I can post specs later if you guys need em but one PC which I know its issue, it is around 10 years old so I'm not expecting great performance. The knew one though is only a year old with 1GB DDR2 Ram and windows XP Home. The older one has 512MB Ram....I think its SD with windows XP pro. Again I can post full stats later if needed but not really trying to trouble shoot. More looking to boost. We run 2 computers and a Wii off our wireless modem. I'm curious if somehow the computers could be configured to operate on seperate...ports I guess to minimize the lag on the modem. We are noticing that if one computer is downloading something it cause the second computer to lag or makes streaming anything all but impossible.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI ran a speed test with my new DIR-655 connected to my PS3 and my download is 768kbps and my upload is 1.5mbps. However, my internet connection is 50mbps and 2mbps upload on my computer connected via LAN. While I understand SOME decrease, that's slower than the previous Wireless G router that I had.
I've reset the router twice and it's currently set to the factory defaults. I've even tried setting a static ip address for the PS3 and put it into DMZ mode. However, I'm still getting the slow speeds.
Also, my iPhone 4 is getting about 14mbps download and 2mbps upload. Is that expected?
It is on my home network. My administrator says I hog the internet. I cannot even update programs
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have two computers, both of them running Windows 7. One of them has been experiencing an odd problem for about six months now, and now that school is out I have time to mess with it. When I try to do certain things, the download speed periodically drops to zero. Specifically, I've noticed it when using Firefox and Steam, but also for IE and a few other browsers I installed for the sake of testing. I know I'm not *losing* connectivity, because everything that isn't specifically downloading a file works fine. Skype calls work fine, Utorrent streams at a steady rate, but for some reason Steam and Firefox have speed graphs that look like the heart rate monitor of someone with a very weak pulse. It starts off strong, a nice solid 1 MB per second, and then after 10-30 seconds it'll slowly decline to 0, and sit there for anywhere from 10 seconds to half an hour before picking up to full speed again. I've tried reinstalling drivers, I've tried buying a new network card, I've tried running antivirus scans, and I've tried uninstalling my antiviruses. The only thing that works for sure is putting it into safe mode. In safe mode, the downloads proceed smoothly. I tried making a list of everything that ran in safe mode, and then rebooted into normal mode and closed each nonessential process and service, but that didn't work either.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an odd problem where http downloads will stop after a few seconds. I can stream video, do anything else with the internet perfectly. It's just when downloading files from websites will this happen.I use a wired connection. I have tried Firefox, Chrome, and IE10, and this problem happens in all of them. I use a WRT54GS router. I have tried downloading files in Ubuntu 12.10, Windows 7 using wireless, and WinXP, and they all can download files perfectly. Only Windows 8 seems to have this problem. Another thing is that my Windows 8 is a fresh install.I have also tried disabling Windows Firewall to no avail.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst, I'm running Windows7 64 bit. So whenever I download a decently sized file; my download will start and get good speed for a few minutes, then it will drop off and stop and my connection to the internet will be lost for a short time while the connection resets. This happens if I'm using a program like Steam to download a game, torrenting something, sometimes on my Xbox 360 when it needs to update itself or a game, occasionally on a large app or album off of iTunes or patching an online game. However, I have no issue watching YouTube videos or playing an online game while also having TeamSpeak running in the backround to chat. I don't lose connection when browsing the internet at all and recently I was able to stream a live event without issue but I only tried that once (I don't have Netflix or anything similar). It usally isn't a big issue because my download will pick up where it left off most of the time but its a pain in the butt to have to add on an extra hour to a download sometimes for this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy ISP limits me and my family to download/upload 40GBs of data each month. Recently, (since my brother has moved back in), the amount downloaded each moth has rocketed to around 60GBs, meaning we've gone over the limit. We've asked my brother to stop downloading things, and he says he has, but its obvious he hasn't. I searched google and I haven't found anything, but I was wondering if there was a piece of software to track exactly what's being downloaded/uploaded through the main router. Or a program to more simply which IP address is downloading the most...
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my router a Dlink DIR-655. I know its the router because if I direct connect from my cable modem the problem does not exist. What happens is I start downloading/streaming something it will start and then just stop prematurely causing me to restart it to get it too finish. For example on youtube, I start loading a video it loads normally for 2 mins of video and then will stop. I can get it to restart if I swap video quality and then it just does same thing. Loads around 2 mins of video then stops loading.
I have tried switching browsers, and I changed my MTU size from 1500 to 1300.My motherboard is a GA-P67A-UD4-B3 if that matters. I have the latest firmware on my router.
I just built a new computer with most of the bells and whistles. Asus P8Z77-V pro motherboard, Intel I7 3770K CPU, NVIDIA GTX 560TI, SSD for my boot drive, HDD for storage both running on SATA III, 16 GB of RAMMy problem is that when I connect to the internet via an ethernet cord, my download speeds are about 58 MBPS which is fine but upload speeds are only about .3 mbps. I have changed cables 3 times and connected directly to the modem rather than the router which would indicate an ISP issue. The kicker is that when I disable the LAN network and enable my wireless network, I get slower download speeds as expected but my upload speeds are closer to 5 MBPS, more than 10X times faster which throws my ISP theory out the window a bit.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am on a 4Mbps internet line.i have 3 PCs connected to the internet through a router. i noticed that direct downloads on the 2 PCs that are connected to the router wirelessly are capped at about 50-60kbps/sec per download. just to clarify, i can still achieve a full speed of 400kbps in total, but just that each download is capped at 50-60kbps.however, on the PC that is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable i am able to download well over 150kbps per download.so i don't think it's my ISP that is capping my downloads here, but i can't figure out why downloads would be capped on the wireless PCs. is it some settings on my router? i have everything pretty much set on default. the modem is a D-Link 2640B.
