How To Make Modem Plug Into Switch Instead Of Router
Sep 6, 2011
I have a network set up currently with a cable modem that goes into a router, the router then goes to a 16 port switch and the switch goes to computers, printers, and my server. I am trying to figure out how to make the modem plug into the switch instead of the router. I'm guessing my problem lies with the default gateway since that is the router. Any suggestions on this? Or how is the best way to set this up? I have 2 NICs on my server and the server has windows 2008 r2.

I've had my DIR-601 for almost a year now and it's been working near flawlessly until just recently. I have a very simple setup with a desktop PC, router, Time Warner cable modem, and the only device that accesses the router is my Droid phone. I shut my PC down every night. The next day when starting up my PC, there's no internet connection. I haven't fooled around with any router settings, but what I've been doing to re-connect is unplug the cable modem power cord and router power code, wait a minute, then re-plug them back in and it connects right away. Is there something easy that I can do/repair to correct this? Maybe I should check if there are firmware updates?

I have a Modem/Router combo and am trying to plug an 8 port switch directly into it and then have wireless AP's and other hardwired devices plugged into the switch. Normally, when I plug a switch into a router it requires no set up. This one on the other hand, will not work.

I just ran Cat6 from my WNDR3700 to a netgear NeoTV550. WNDR is in the computer room and the Neo is in the living room. Cat6 had to be fished downstairs, around the bathroom wall and over the solid plaster ceiling. Fun times! My question is, should I add a switch to the connection on the far end, essentially creating a trunk sans dot1.q tagging and then plug the Neo in? Or should I just plug directly into the Neo?

I have a customer that has a stack of 3750x switches installed in production and now would like to install the powerstack cables. The switches are in production and downtime would like to be avoided. Can you install the powerstack cables with the switches powered up? I would assume you can, but wanted to verify before doing so.

I am using a cable company called Cox.net for the internet. The cable modem is Motorola brand.Sometimes, the modem got disconnected due to outage in my area. But after Cox fixed the outage, I have to reset the modem. The problem is I do not know when the outage is fixed. Sometimes, I reset the modem and call cox all day long. Is there a modem which can reset itself after there is the internet signal?The second question is my desktop pc, which connected to the wireless router through a cable, sometimes displays a error page in IE8 (Internet Explorer). At the same time, the laptops using wireless can view IE8 pages.I think what happened is there is a internet signal outage in my house but the laptops got re-connected to the internet automatically and the desktop did not re-connect. Sometimes, I can ping a website on the desktop but I cannot see the pages in IE. Re-open IE does not fix the problem. The solution is to re-boot the pc. Is there a network card or software I can use to re-connect to the web after the internet signal becomes available? My pc's mother board has the network device to plug in the cable. The brand is Gigabyte.

We have a modem at home but it doesn't have built in wifi so we have it connected to a router. We have fast internet (ADSL2 i think) but running through the router, it's very slow. So i was wondering if i could somehow make my laptop a modem? Or a router as well because it would have to be faster than the one we have now. Im running a Acer Aspire 1830 Notebook 32-bit windows simple language when replying

I had windstreams modem "speedstream 4200" but parents for whatever reason thought the 4300 would change everything. With the 4200 I was open for gaming, could connect. With this 4300 I can't connect to anyone at all. I disabled DHCP server in my rotuer and that aving more fails than succeeds. (in connecting to people).My router doesn't have bridge mode but my modem does, I don't know what it does in the modem. My friend had the exact same problem I did and he put his router in bridge mode which I do not.

I have a question regarding the network setup. I have 3 pieces of network hardware and a fast dsl connection. The hardware is:
- DSL Modem from my provider with static IP connection (CISCO - don't know the symbol)
- DSL Router (edimax ar-7084a)
- Switch (Hewlett-Packard JD871A)
Now the task is to create a LAN network so all my computers can talk together and have a internet connection shared between them.When I connect Modem to Router and then 4 CPUs to router, it is working fine. The problem is that the router has only 4 ports and that it is 100Mbit slow. I would like to use the HP switch for the LAN setup (1Gbit) and then connect the switch to router and router to modem. But it doesn't work I cannot establish internet connection this way. I'm setting all the settings in my router but it doesn't work as it was in simple setup modem->router->cpu. when I add switch to this, the setup is going berserk.Problem is that I would like to create a LAN only between computers using switch. I have other computers that I want to conect to the router directly and don't see the computers using switch.

I have ATT u-verse currently and it connected to a router but I am going to need several more gigabit ports so I wanted to get an 8 port gigabit switch. I would plan on running a cable from my U-Verse modem to my router then to my switch giving me wireless and 8 gigabit ports. Would that work? I've never done this before so I wasn't sure if I was missing something or not.

We setup a home network in our new house but we have a problem with limited connectivity in specific configuration.
There is few situations to describe the problem :
1. If I connect my computer directly to the modem I can access to the internet. (modem --> computer = internet OK)
2. If i connect the ethernet cable (in the wall) between my modem and RJ45 jack in the living room and connect my computer directly to the RJ45 I can access to the internet. (modem --> cat6 cable in the wall --> computer = internet ok)
3. If I connect my router directly (without the cat6 cable in the wall) to the modem and my computer to the the router I can access to the internet. (modem --> router --> computer = internet ok)
4. If i connect the ethernet cable (in the wall) between my modem and RJ45 jack in the living room and connect to router to the RJ45 and my computer to the router I CANNOT access to the internet. (modem --> cat6 cable in the wall --> router --> computer = internet access problem)
5. If i connect the ethernet cable (in the wall) between my modem and RJ45 jack in the living room and connect to a swith to the RJ45 and my computer to the switch I can access to the internet. (modem --> cat6 cable in the wall --> switch --> computer = internet OK)
With those tests I am not able to figured out what is the problem... router is working in situation #3. cable in the wall is ok in situations #2 and 5. How to make my router working when connected to the RJ45 jack in the living room.
There is my component :
Router --> D-Link WBR-2310
Switch --> Trendnet TE100-S5
Modem --> Thomson DCM475
Cable in the wall --> Homemade with 568A standard in both end.

I usually put some stuff up for downloading and go to sleep. Now I setup my computer to auto-shutdown at a particular time via cmd, but I want o know whether it is possible for me to put some time settings in my modem+router so that it switches off at a particular time or something like that.Then when I get up next morning, start using it again. I don't want to keep my router on after it's not needed. Also I don't wanna keep it vulnerable after it's not needed, even though I have set it up quite securely. ( WPA2 PSK, and MAC filtering)

But when I connect router directly to modem by bypassing switch, it works fine but not via switch. I have some restrictions due to which I have to strictly following this sort of connection: Modem -Switch - Router

The first part, is this even possible? Modem to switch.
Second part, e1200 router plugged into switch, handles DHCP for the switch.
Plug gigabit computers into the switch, non gigabit/wireless devices into the e1200 router.
If e1200 can't handle DHCP for the switch, could I configure a DHCP linux server directly to the switch?
I don't want to limit my network to my e1200 speeds when I have a gigabit capable modem and a gigabit capable switch.

The current setup is as follows: Virginmedia Superhub in modem mode connected to one Cisco C2950 on port fa 0/23. The 2950 is connected to a Cisco C3550 over fa 0/24 via normal Cat 5e.Port fa 0/23 on the 3550 have a Astaro/Sophos UTM connected to it that acts as a Firewall/Wireless controller etc. The hitch, or maybe one of them, is that the 3550 and the UTM is on another floor from the 2950 and cannot be moved. The Virginmedia superhub can't be moved to the other floor either due to limitations in the cabling.What I'd like to achieve is for the UTM to pick up the public IP from the Virginmedia cable modem whilst no other devices on the Lan should be able to connect to the cable modem. All inbound/outbound internet traffic should go through the UTM for security reasons. The UTM have a number of available nic's that can be set to dhcp, static etc. I already have a number of VLANS on the router/switch and have half a suspicion that using another VLAN for this purpose might be the way forward but I'm not sure..

I have a Linksys WRT54G2 v1 router which is having a daily problem of connectiing to the Internet on my home wireless LAN. My temporary solution is to disconnect the power from the router for about 15 seconds and plug it back in .... and all is well.... at least for another day or so.The real problem is that instead of properly connecting to IPv4 address 192.168.1.100 ..... it randomly connects to Autoconfiguration IPv4 address 169.254.29.54 When this problem occurs the SSID list shows both my 192 connection as well as a public network with no Internet connection?
I've used this router for several years without a problem until I recently bought a new Canon wireless MG5320 printer which initially had problems connecting to my LAN. After a telco with tech support the printer works fine but now I am now experiencing the Autoconfig address problem.My LAN consist of the WRT54G router, a Motorola cable modem, a Lenovo laptop running Win7 64bit, a Hp desktop running Win7 64bit and the Canon wireless printer. (all connected wirelessly)

I bought an ESW 540 8-port switch, mainly for the POE capability over all 8 ports, so that we can power some SPA50X phones.The concepts of a "managed" switch are challenging for a newbie.Is there a way to make this device behave like a boring "unmanaged" switch ??We have plenty of bandwidth, and don't need to be troubled by QoS and virtual LAN's, or all the security stuff at this time.Making this device work like an unmanaged switch (aka plug-and-pray).
