Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 - Wireless Printer Won't Work?
May 8, 2012
I have a E4200 router and I was using it with a 1st generation MacBook Air for internet and also had my Samsung laser printer hooked up (USB) for wireless printing. It worked perfectly. Now I have upgraded to a new MacBook Air. The internet connection works fine, but printing won't work. Same printer. Same connections.
Do I need to refresh/reboot something? My new Mac has the printer driver. I get a message "printer if offline" "printer is not connected" -I feel like the router now does not recognize the new Mac's command to print. The older macbook air still works and prints wirelessly. The new one does not.

I just got a new E4200 v2 wireless router. I'm intrigued by the USB port, especially for using it to connect a printer. I currently have a D-Link wireless print server that I'm using to create a network-attached printer, but if I could remove an extra device and just have the printer connected straight to the router

I think I have worked out that you can`t currently connect a usb printer to the usb port on the e4200 in order to share it over the network.
However I have heard reports that this might facility might be enabled in the spring.
I have also heard something about `virtual usb` but I don`t know whether this has anything to do with it.

I have an HP laser printer (network printer) plugged into one of the ethernet ports of the E4200. I am able to print and communicate with the printer (via the built-in web interface) for the first few hours after the printer is powered on. After a day or so, however, (when the printer has gone into sleep/power-save mode) I can no longer print or attach to it - it is seen as being offline. The only way around this is to power the printer off and on again.I never had this problem with the E3000 or the (non-Cisco) router before that. I do not see any settings that would cause this to happen.

Since firmware 1.0.02, E4200 supports connect printers to USB port and print to it from Windows using CiscoConnect. Is there any way to print from Linux (using CUPS, LPD, etc)?

Is it possible to share a usb printer over a network if I use the E3200 or E4200 router as an acces point? (I already have a router and will use the cisco as an access point only) I checked the documentation for "cisco connect" as best I could but I couldn't figure it out.

The latest Firmware for the E4200 states that there is now the ability to attach a printer to the USB port of the router. I am using a Mac, so that may be the problem, but I have followed the instructions on how to add the printer and it is not happening. It's possible that the MAC Firmware was not given the ability to add a USB printer like the PC Firmware upgrade.

The Guest Access is a very nice feature for allowing us to provide Internet access in our rental unit.
However, it would be nice to provide the Guests access to the USB printer.
Is there a way to provide access to the USB printer for those who are logged into the "Guest Network"?

My issue is sharing a printer across my main Network and the wireless one, the description of the setting: I have my main Network 10.1.1.0/24 (RV082) and I hooked the wireless router E4200 at an IP 10.1.1.82 and the wireless network is 192.168.1.0/24 I setup a printer/scanner with an IP 192.168.1.72 for sharing on both Networks. Now everyone on 192.168.1.0 network is able to access and print but none on 10.1.1.0 I did put a static route on the RV082 to direct the requests for the printer to be redirected to 10.1.1.82 but no success.
The E4200 is setup by default out of the box I had just to set the static IP, Gateway and DNS and of course the wireless security key nothing else. the NAT is enabled on the E4200 and RIP is disabled, I tested the connection by disabling NAT and enabling RIP, at which I was able to connect to the printer but the Internet went down for All Wireless users (192.168.1.0 network)

I've been using this router for several years with a wireless connection to an iPhone, and wired connections to a computer running Windows Vista, a computer running Windows XP (only connected occasionally and never during these tests), a NetTalk telephone ATA, and a Brother printer. I just got a Windows 8 laptop with wireless. I found that the laptop wouldn't connect wired until I cycled power to the router and rebooted the laptop. OK, that's working to get the laptop to the internet. Vista and iPhone are still working. Printer won't work? Use an IP scanner and the printer is just not there although the light on the router is solid for it. Turn off laptop and cycle power and everything else is back to normal. Let's try wireless. Laptop will not connect. Is it something with the printer? Turn off printer, cycle power, and reboot and laptop wireless now works. Turn on printer and printer doesn't work again. Unplug ATA (hey, it's something to try), cycle power, reboot, everything except telephone is working! Plug ATA back in, no telephone. Cycle power. Back to square one with everything working except laptop. Turn off iPhone, reboot laptop, laptop now OK but printer has disappeared again. Turn iPhone back on and it won't connect either. Cycle power with printer off and everything else works again.

I have been successfully printing to my HP 8250 printer USB connected to my e4200 router for nearly a year from my xp ethernet pc and 2 windows 7 wireless laptops. Today nothing could print to it and when I deleted and tried to reinstall using cisco connect it tells me I am trying to connect an unsupported device both on ethernet XP PC and wireless windows 7 laptop. I have installed no new software or drivers this year. I have had to regress to attaching the printer back to the XP PC and sharing it which obviously means the PC now needs to be switched on to print.

I have had the E4200 for a while with a Brother MFC-J615W printer. I have been having problems keeping the connection between my laptop(HP) and the printer ever since I switched to this router. The only thing that works is completely reinstalling the driver, and then it is touchy when searching the network for the printer. The port and IP address for my printer match, and when I tried pinging my printer, I do not have any success. My laptop registers the printer as offline, as does the router when I go into the devices on the router(via mylocalrouter). To spot check the issue, I have switched the router back to my old one(Belkin) and the printer works flawlessly. I have always been able to connect the printer to the network without any problems, but my laptop and router dont recognize it.

I have a new Polycom Soundpoint IP550 VOIP phone that was not connecting via my old WRT54GS router. I purchased a new router, the E4200, thinking it was just the age of my original router. It also will not allow the VOIP traffic through. I can connect the VOIP phone directly to my CenturyLink modem and it works. But when I connect it back to the router it stops.
I contacted Cisco support and they had me upgrade the firmware to 1.0.02 build 13 May 24, 2011 version. Also adjusted down the MTU to 1364. That still did not work so they told me to take the router back to the store. I have not done that yet as I want to ensure that the router is really broken and not that I am missing a setting. The tech said that I should be able to plug the VOIP phone into the router and make NO additional changes.

I was excited to learn that USB printer support was added to the E4200. I'm disappointed to find that the USB printer option that is available in firmware version 1.0.02 requires Cisco Connect software. There is no version of Cisco Connect for Linux. I was hoping that this would allow the printer to be shared among my Win7 desktop, Win7 laptop, and my Linux desktop running Ubuntu 10.10. No such luck. WIth the printer connected to the router I can print with any one computer. My previous configuration had the printer connected to my WIn7 desktop so that desktop had to be turned-on to print. The bottom line is that I still can't print from the Linux box without turning on the desktop machine. Cisco please provide a way to connect to the printer without using the Connect software! Or provide a java version that can be run on any OS.

I set up my new E4200 to forward port 7300 to a computer on my LAN. I had this working on my Linksys WRT160N and copied all of the settings so they are identical to those on that router but forwarding does not work. I have tried single port forwarding, multiple port forwarding and even DMZ with the same lack of results.

I have an HP LJ4050 plugged right into one of the open LAN ports on my E4200 with a CAT6 cable. Can this router work as a LAN print server? I can't pull up the IP on a browser window or ping it successfully. The 4050 doesn't have USB capability and I don't want to use the parallel port on my PC unless I have to.If possible, I'd like to have wireless computers on the network be able to print to it as well.

why Windows Backup in Windows 7 pro 64 would not backup over the network to a drive I have connected to the 4200s USB port? Everytime I run it I get a Access Denied error at the end, even though data has been transfered. After about 5 hours of searching both here and Microsoft's website, I just get lots of people with the same issue that hasnt been resolved anywhere consistantly.

I'm looking to purchase the E4200 and use an external HDD with enclose as a NAS (probably just a backup drive), specifically this model. [code]The HDD would be a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3.Does this router allow for USB 3 connections or at least fallback to USB 2? The first comment on the external enclose says so otherwise.

I have tried both old firmware (2.37) then the Cloud firmware and now back to 2.37 again. the parental controls seems kind of fool proof but anyhow they dont work for me.If I set the internet access as denied at certain times, if the client is already connected when that time occours, it can continue to use internet (until it disconnects and tries to reconnect). Happens almost every time. And the biggest problem is that if I try to block internet access for a device like a cell phone, even though the user can not access the internet through the web browser, apps like Facebook, games etc can still access internet. Kind of useless parental control?!But I have tried to reset, reflash etc. Also I find this router pretty unstable, the only device that works flawless is my iPad (3), the laptops and cell phones at home loses internet connection every one and then, even though it seems like they have good connection to the router. Never been a problem with my earlier routers.

I'm having a problem with Wake on Lan. (I'll bet you never guessed from the title, eh?). I have an E4200 and I can not get WoL to work over the internet.(I'm assuming it's not actually going out to the internet when I wirelessly wake it using shawn.dynamicservice.com and the subnet, but rather the DDNS name is being resolved through the ARP cache, but I don't know. I'm still learning) Consequently, if the sentence above in parenthesis is correct, I am unable to perform WoL from outside my LAN. What am I missing?

I'm trying to fix the network at a student housing building and the system is kind of a mess. We bought a new E4200 to replace our old Linksys router which no one knows the admin pw to. We have four switches for 50 connections throughout the four story house and when switching the connections over to the new E4200 all of the wired connections no longer work. Switch back to the old router and presto. How do I need to change the settings with the E4200 to get it to work?
Also, as it's a thick old house the E4200's wireless only covers maybe half of it...I purchased two wireless repeaters to put on the 3rd and 4th floors, are these simple to install with the router?

I just got the e4200 the other day and everything has been great except I can't seem to get my ABS megacam 4 ethernet camera to work.It was working fine with my old router, and if I plug directly into it it works, but I can't access it through the router at all. I can see the camera in my routers client list, the camera is set to DHCP and it is assigning it an IP address but I can't connect to it. From my desktop pc (wired) I can using the IPwizard software that came with the camera and it will see the camera on the network but it wont connect to it, my wireless clients can't even see the camera using the same software.

I recently bought myself the E4200v1 router, and have had several issues with it. One issue I cannot seem to find a workaround for is the wifi bandwidth problem.I have a 100/10 mbitl internet connection. The router claims to support 300/450 mbit speeds over wifi, so that should be plenty. in reality however, that isnt so.Even though my N-standard wifi adapter on my machine states it has a 130 mbit connection to the router, I consistently test the internet throughput when using wifi and speedtest.net to around 20-21 mbit. If I put in a cable, I instantly get full speed, 100/10 mbit.
Have to add; I am not new to the networking game, I have a CCNA and a degree in computer sciences, and work with hosting web sites using cloud tech every day. At this point, I have tried everything related to settings on the router, so I can only conclude that there's some kind of bug in the firmware. I would expect the standard firmware to work, and not having to install DDWRT or other custom firmware.

I'm just about to trade-in an E4200v2 for a E4200v1, primarily to regain the "Internet Access Policy" capability.
Just wanted to do a reality check with those of you who tried/use IAP... does it work basically as advertised?
I would be using IAP to specify MAC addr's of devices, blocking them from certain URL's and limiting their hours of Internet access.
And I plan to have Linksys's DHCP Server turned OFF, since my Windows Server handles DHCP on my network.
Should I expect all of this to work OK? No major reliability problems with IAP?
