I have a wrt610n that I've used for years with no problem. The usb drive I've had plugged into it has worked great for a really long time, but it's fairly small. I bought a WD 1TB hard drive, formatted it with the router set everything up. after about a day I tried to upload a file from work and got an error, and it wiped the harddrive clean. I reloaded thinking it was a fluke and everything worked fine for about a month. Uploading and downloading worked fine from where ever I was at, on the local network or over the internet. Then I tried to upload a small file, got the error and all of my files were gone again.

I've got the Cisco E4200 v1 firmware 1.0.04I hooked an usb 2.0 enclosure to it running a WD red "NASware" 1TB drive to it.The drive works just fine, brand new, silent, runs cool enough. I'm not saying it's a super-drive, just not complaining of anything.I started using it as a backup drive. File disappear randomly.Gigabytes of files deleted. No power outages nothing happened, the Router is 24-7 on connected to a UPS. So it is the drive, it was never shut off since connected the drive, about a month ago. It only shares connection among a couple desktop PCs a couple laptops a network printer and a couple smartphones, all updated, all clean that is no virus or anythingI removed the drive from the router and plugged it in the computer.Files were there, even though the files in the root were not all there, it must have crashed during the last modifications, although it's bad, and it's also bad that it does not give you a single sign it has crashed.

I just installed this router and connected the hard drive (Western Digital 1TB) which worked fine at first. When I moved some movie files to another folder they lost all of their data. The file names are still present, but all the media files show zero bytes and are no longer usable. Is there anyway to get these files back? I have been digitizing all our movies to the tune of about 90GB. What could be going on here? I disconnected the HD from the router and plugged directly into the laptop. Still shows the file names, but each file is still at zero bytes. Not a cool way to have a media server for your house!

I've rolled back my E4200 router to the old firmware 1.0.0.1, then set up a media server. It generally works (e.g. it streams pre-existing media files to other devices). I can copy to this external drive small (say, < 1 MB) files. The drive has enough free space. However, I cannot copy to this external drive large (e.g. 700 MB) files.

I decided to play around a little more with the media server feature... I've succeeded in getting SOMETHING consistent out of the 1.0.02 firmware. It's not 100% useful.
Here's what I did - whether it's pertinent, who knows:
1) I made the Media Server "Name" completely unique. My router's name was "Penguin" and that seemed to proliferate throughout the settings on the router everywhere (SMB server name, FTP, Media Server, etc.). I decided to just call the media server "Server." I then checked the option to DISABLE the server, and saved settings.
2) With the Media Server OFF, browse to the share on the USB drive, and completely delete the T wonky folder.
3) On the Media Server page of the router config, add your media sources.
4) Enable the Media Server, save, and you'll then see the T wonky folder come back, and if you go into that folder, you'll see some files being "built."
I tested a few videos and some music with the XBMC media player on my Mac book and a Windows 7 PC. I was able to add music and video sources on my small selection of test music and videos. I was also able to play them. MP3 tags and embedded artwork showed up properly, and the streaming over wireless was very good.
Now... Here's the kicker. This was just a VERY small sample of my entire collection. I had about 5 albums in MP3 format on the drive, and about 10 movies that I personally converted to MP4 with Handbrake (ripped each movie to about 1.4gb). When I threw my entire 90gb music collection on the drive and told it to scan (it, being the router Media Server page), it seemed to populate the albums up to a certain point, and then crashed. I saw the data files in the T wonky folder getting larger for about 5 minutes, then it stopped growing. At that same time, XBMC wasn't able to see any music or videos. Even after turning off the media server, then re-enabling it, I wasn't able to see anything. If I deleted the T wonky folder, and went back to a smaller subset of my collection, it once again worked "reliably."
So, one of several things is happening here.
1) There are certain files the media server cannot properly parse, and it's crashing the services that run it.
2) Something is corrupting the media database files which then prevents it from showing up.
3) There's a maximum number of files or file size that your collection can be.
If only there was a syslog we could get to on the stock firmware... Linksys.

E4500 local network IP is 10.10.XXX.XXX and the DHCP server also starts with this subnet. My network is 192.168.XXX.XXX based but if I manually chahge the routers IP I can no longer access it. I do not use DHCP as this is in bridge mode. Why is this setup this way...CCC?

I just got a new E4500 and plugged a blank 2TB drive into it (Windows shows it is formatted NTFS) which was originally plugged into my WRT-610. I'm moving my media files and when it hits a 50+GB video it reports that there is not enough space to move the file. Smaller files are moving just fine.

I've enabled the Media Server on my E3000 router. My PS3 can see the server and play media from it by my PCs can't!
I'm using Windows Media Player v 12.0 on Windows 7 and some older version on Windows XP and it's my understanding that the Media Server should appear under the "Other Libraries" section but it does not.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a bug in the E3000 firmware (I have the latest as of this date) or is the Media Server simply not compatible with Windows Media Player? compatible media player for Windows 7?
I did read a post about a firmware upgrade on the 4200 that broke the media player, but I don't know if such a problem exists for the E3000.

Not sure if I have a defective router, but if I unplug it I then need to wait at least a half hour to plug it back in. Anytime sooner and it won't broadcast a SSID or connect to the modem. This is a huge inconvenience if you want to change router settings and then you need to restart.

Latest firmware with CCC corrupted after power outage. I reseet the e4500 several times and tried to reload the firmware and still no good. Only way I got it back up is to install the older non-CCC version 2.37. Strange all was fine until the power outage. Not sure if I should even bother to upgrade to 2.38 again.

Just purchased the E4500 today and install failed on both machines. Install starts and then fails to finish.I have contacted support via chat and was given manual instructions and the router will not connect to either machine. Are there known issues with the Cisco Connect software not installing?
The chat support person finally dropped out of the chat and the router remains in an unusable state.I currently had to cable wired connection of laptop to get an internet connection.

I got one issue with the WRT610N and the NAS feature. I am running Vista on a laptop connected to the WRT610N via the 802.11n link but the issue is not here.I have a hard drive of 40GB (but same issue exist with another drive of 500GB) plug to the USB port. I can read all file without any issue. I can also add file without any problem. The problem come when I try to delete some directory. In this case I got the an 0x8007045D Error indicating that I need to have the right permission for doing this. However I do not have any issue in deleting files. In case I delete all files from a directory I can't delete the directory without the error. I map the drive to the windows explorer with the admin account which give read and write access.

I recently set up a an external hard drive as a UPnP media server through my router. My media devices and my computer can see the drive fine. My question is, what is the best way to add files to the drive? It seems like a hassle to plug it into a computer directly every time I want to add more files, and FTP is kind of clunky. Is there any sort of software I can put on the drive or any better way to drop files onto it?I'm using a Seagate 2TB USB Drive formatted as FAT32 connected to a lemonade-equipped Westell 7501 router. I understand that it may be that I'm trying to get too high tech with my $7 router, but it seems that there should be a better solution.

due to location issues, I have to use the E4500 as a 2nd router. I have a Netgear router setup as the primary router connected to the internet, this acts as my firewall. The E4500 connected to the netgear and it route all traffic fine. The only issue I have is port forwarding to E4500. I've setup the FTP server on the E4500 and can access it via the internal network. Then on the netgear I forward the FTP port 21to the E4500. But it doesn't seem to work.
I know when I forward all my other ports, it works just fine. If I setup a FTP server on an other machine and forward that the port it works, just not the E4500. I've disabled all firewall settings on the E4500, and still nothing.

The Media Server feature is quite nice to have but the fact that it is limited to 100 files is a joke. I have a 2TB drive pugged into this router's USB port with hundreds of video files and even more mp3s. Is there any chance that in a future firmware this limit to be removed or at least increased to say 1000?

I've recently bought the TP-LINK WDR3600 and am very happy with it. I'm using its media server feature so I can watch movies on my TV through DLNA, but have found a problem: the MP4 files are not shown. All the other files work perfectly (AVI, MKV), but the MP4 files are not shown in Windows Media Player or LG Smart TV. I assume the Media Server software simply does not include this kind of files when scanning. Is there any way of accessing the media server configuration file and "enable" MP4 files?

I just got the TL-WDR3600.
It seems to work fine and my Smart TV recognizes my network drive or usb hdd connected to the router.
However, the files on the network drive or usb hdd don't seem to appear/work. The folder the files are stored in are recognized, but not the files themselves.
I've plugged the usb HDD directly to the TV and it recognizes and plays the movie files fine, however when trying to find them via the wireless router, they don't appear/work.
Are there some settings i need to change to allow the TV to see/play the files?

I have a Buffalo LS-XLBB2 Linkstation NAS streaming wirelessly to a Sony SMP-N200 media player. For some reason, whenever I add or edit a file on the NAS via my PC the file list is not updating on the media player.I have the database set to refresh at 20 minute intervals, but some files and folders never show up and some do after a few days. There are no problems with file type as I can play them back fine when I connect a USB drive to the media player, it just seems like the media player isn't getting a copy of the new database. When I manually refresh the database, it makes matters worse. All of the files disappear on the media player list, except for one folder (the same folder every time). The original file list comes back again if I restart the NAS and media player, but the new files are still not listed. I can access the new files on the NAS fine with my PC or laptop, so the files are there, the media player just isn't updating the file list.
Things I've tried:
- Checking that both the NAS and media player firmware is up to date
- Retarting both units
- Resetting both units to default
- Trying different files types (the first file has never shown up, the second file showed up in the list 5 days later)
- Changing the database refresh intervals on the NAS
- Manually refreshing/initialising the NAS database
The main advice on other forums seems to be to set up a media server on the PC and stream though that, but the whole idea of getting the NAS was so that I could watch videos on my TV without having to have the PC on all the time.

Im using a Linksys E4500 wireless router behind a Motorola SB6121 modem. My OS is Windows 7 and it is fully up to date. In general my entire network is working well. Now I have purchased a new IP surveillance camera and need to forward a port to be able to have remote viewing of the camera. Mi ISP blocks quite a few inbound ports including 80 so I have been trying a lot of ports all over the map to find something that will allow inbound access.
After several hours, nothing I have tried works, using a couple of different port probes including one called CanYouSeeMe I always get a "timed out" message. I have disabled the firewall in the router and on the local computer and still no luck. This says to me that either Cox is blocking nearly all ports (doubtful) or the modem is blocking access to the router somehow.
The Surfboard modem doesn't have a built in router. Unfortunately I don't have an old working modem to put in the circuit.
I don't guess it matters but the camera is accessible from all other local computers on the LAN using its IP address with a port number appended (right now it's using 8000).

All excited I scoot over to the PS 3 - righto we can do this!! Only to see no titles found. Great stuff Go to router - media server - scan - database updated - awesome let's try again! No titles found. Ok?!? Reboot router - reboot ps3. Still frowning - no titles found?
