Mix Fiber Optics And Cable In A Home?
Sep 3, 2012
I have had fiber optics for phone, TV, and internet (30/30 speed). They upped the price 80%! I would like to keep my internet on fiber optics but drop TV and phone to cable which is cheaper. Can I have both systems simultaneously? Also, we have a Sony L-series TV/Computer. IT's a TV and computer in one. Can we have both fiber optics and cable attach to it at the same time?

I have X3000 home gateway and very happy with this device. Use it now as ADSL modem/wifi router. Everything works fine but there is something I do not understand about this device. It has 4 LAN ports and a Cable port. Suppose, I am upgraing from a copper service to fibre. Fibre providers comes and installs their fibre box which is kind of a "modem" for fibre technology. how do I connect fibre box to X3000? Do I use Cable port or a LAN port?
As far as I understand the 4 LAN ports work as switch ports (work at OSI level 2, provide access strictly within same subnet, all devices connected to these ports share the same default gateway), and Cable port gets a different IP address via DHCP or another protocol from the fibre box, or directly from ISP (if we have PPPoE or IPoE service as an example). And there would be no point in plugging WAN link into a LAN port as X3000 would not be able to communicate to the gateway on the other end of the cable.

I just installed a 10 port Cisco SG300-10MP in my office, 9 of the ports are already in use. Connected to it are
PC
Laptop
Notebook
WIFI AP
B&W laser printer
Color inkjet printer
IP camera
Squeezebox SB3
Cat5e connection to basement HP 1810G-24 switch All of these devices are connected via a single Cat5e cable that was installed when the house was built. I had to re-terminate both ends of it when I moved in because the existing terminations were done very poorly. I have no idea how or where the cable is routed, nor what the quality of this Cat5e cable is. It did pass a test using my cable tester.
This single Cat5e is connected to my main HP switch in the basement equipment rack. Both of these switches have mini-GBIC ports that can utilize SFP transceivers and fiber. I priced out 2 MGBSX1 compatible modules along with a 30M multimode fiber patch 'cable' online at under $150. Although it would require at least a couple hours of work (including digging around in the attic and crawl space and drilling some holes), but running the fiber to the basement is very doable.
My question to my far more experienced forum members is if the performance gains would be worth the effort? My server is in the basement, and despite having an Intel GB NIC in my PC I am seeing read speeds of ~23MBs and writes of ~49MBs to/from my it. My server has teamed GB NICs (802.3ad LACP Layer 2) connected to trunked (LACP) ports on my HP switch.

An external company is going to deploy multiple fiber links on my campus.Link distances vary from 120 to 400 meters.I already have the switches in production with spare SFP gigabit ports on the locations. The backbone is gigabit, so I asked them to use GLC-LH-SMD SFP modules. So, they just called me and according to them, the minimum distance for MMF links with that SFP module is 550 meters. I checked Cisco's website and it says "up to 550m"?

The core switch is a 6506 and one of the modules is the 48port POE module. The 6506 resides in the main building and we need to interconnect two other annexes to the main building via fibre. is it possible to have just 2 sfp ports on the 48 port module or how to connect the fibre cable to the switch?
Also, if the existent network is made up of Cat5e cables would it be of anyuse to use Cat6 cables for uplink for the switches on each segment to the core switch. I feel basically the Cat5e would nullify the speed of the Cat6 or am i wrong and this would make uplink speed faster.

At home we have a business Fiber line with 100/100 connection, right now connected to a Cisco 2911 Router.Problem with this one is that it doesnt give the cool neat config options you get on for example the new EA routers, nor does it support uPNP. Now I was wondering if it would be an idea to use the EA4500 (which i have here aswell, though atm not in use) instead of the 2911.does the 2911 offer that much more power and speed that it would be unwise to use a EA4500 on Fiber?

We recently moved to a new office and currently have three ISPs(DSL, SAT, 4G) because we are unable to get Cable nor Fiber services. We have anywhere between 7-20 Remote Desktop connections(with lot of file transfers) and 8 VOIP lines. Basically, we need to bind certain services to specific WAN links in order to make everything work somewhat decent because of the limited bandwidth and/or latency of each ISP.
I would like to double check if the bindings are working for the specific services, and it has been difficult to verify if the settings in the RV016 are working. I believe it's not working 100%, and I need a way to check and make sure that my settings are being followed.
What would be the best way to check the current connections to see if the service is being routed via the WAN link specified in my setting? My RV016 is HW ver 3, but not the latest firmware. Purchased about 2 months ago.

I have a WS-X6816-10G-2T module with X2-10GB-SR modules. I will be getting a SMF hand off and the length of the termination is around 100 meters. (I will be getting another hand off for Inter-DC link for which I have X2-10GB-LR module). The question is can I connect this SMF hand off (short length) on the SR module?

I need to connect 4 Floor Building with 4 Cisco 2960 - 48 ports switch each other and it needs to be through a fiber. So all PCs connected to each switch would reach the LAN/WAN from the other switch. (attached is the image here with)
I see that the 2960 has 2 SFP ports each port of each switch should connect each other or how?
My simple question is:
1. What cable / patch code I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode? ( distance for each switch will not more then 25 mts)
2. Do I have to use SFP or SFP+ module?
3. What kind of SFP/SFP+ module I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode?
4. What kind of connector should patch code have = LC / SC or ?
5. How to connect each switch with redundancy like ...each switch should be interconnected with each other or I have to choose Cisco 3750G which has more then 2 SFP ports (option#1 & opetion#2 = attached here with) =
Best practice for connecting cisco switches over fiber.

How do I find out what GBIC is installed on my Sup2 right now where Fiber cable is connected? What GBIC/SFP will be compatible for this on 7206VXR or ASR1002?If I use SFP do I need to change the cable connector?

I have 100 mbps fiber connection. I bought 320N today I bought 320N and here is the problem:
We have a switch in the building. I am getting connection via CAT5. So I choosed "Use as WAN Port" from Ethernet settings. There is not much you can do here. I just used PPPoE and connected internet without any problem. The problem is I am only getting 32mbps. When I connect CAT5 cable directly to my computer I am getting 92mbps.
Maybe WAG320N is not establishing a full duplex connection.

I have a problem connecting a PC in a TwinGig Convertors (GLC-LH-SM). I want to connect a PC with a fiber cable on the supervisor WS-X45-SUP6L-E of my Switch 4500E.
The default configuration mode is X2. As I want to deploy Gigabit interfaces (that is, use TwinGig Convertors), then I configured the associated port-group:
Switch(config)#hw-module module 1 port-group 2 select gigabitethernet
*Feb 24 06:18:37.125: Port Te1/2: TwinGig Converter inserted: vendor: CISCO
Switch(config)#do sh int status mod 1
Port Name Status Vlan Duplex Speed Type
[code]....
I noted that the Swicth set up automatically 'switchport mode trunk', so i put the command 'swicthport mode access' because i want to connect only a PC. But the status is the same, I can not achieve connectivity. i just want to know how connect a PC in the interface GigabitEthernet1/4 of the supervisor engine of my Switch.

I have recently switched to fibre optics and I have decided to reuse my Linksys E4200 that was previously used with a cable network. However, After installing the router using the disk provided I was unable to connect to the internet even though my computer was able to connect with the router. What can I do to solve this prob. I have tried restarting the modem to the factory settings and the same problem recurs.P.S. The modem was installed to another router provided by my service provider.

I would like to set up a TV in my spare room which does not have a coax plug. Because of the set of my house running coax cable to this room, although possible, is something I am hoping to avoid. This is because if I was to run the cable on the outside of the wall it would get in my way and it will cost $300 to $400 for a tech to come out and run it through the wall.My first thought was to set up an old computer in my living room and have it connect to a cable box. Then I would send the video signal over the wireless network. The problem is that I cannot change channels on the other end. I have been reading up on power-line networking and it looks like a good option for my problem. I was hoping to find a device that will allow me to plug coax cable into it in the living room send the signal through the power-line to another device in my spare room where my TV receiver would be located. Is there anything like this out there on the market? If not are there any other options I can look at?

I have a modem which is allowing me to go online at home. Unfortunately, the cable that goes with this modem is too short (just 2m).This week, I bought a cable (internet cable) of 24m and I expected to be able to move around while being connected and surf the internet but internet does not work when I am using the new cable. We have tested the cable (using a cable tester) and the cable seems to work fine. When I use back the old cable (which is very short) internet is working perfect.

I have a Linksys WAG200G wireless ADSL router. So it has one ADSL(phone) line input port , 4 Ethernet ports and wireless router. My router is fine and works well on ADSL connections. But as I have switched to Comcast DOCSIS modem based internet connection now, I want to to setup this router as "Home Gateway" only and not the modem. My intention is to use- use 1 of the 4 ethernet ports at the back of router as an INPUT . I want to put the ethernet output of the DOCSIS modem into this INPUT- and then i want to use the remaining 3 Ethernet ports as OUTPUT ports from the router.- I also want to work my router as Wireless router.
My query is- Is this possible ? Basically use 1 port as an input and 3 as output.- I have tried different things - Using Bridge mode only. DHCP disabled but sometimes only wireless works and other times only LAN bridge setup works but both do not work together.- Also at times, one Ethernet port will work as an INPUT and 1 as an OUTPUT but other two remain disabled.

Lately I've been experiencing connection problems between my router and cable modem. Every night after 11:00 PM EST, my Internet connection sporadically goes out. I called my ISP who said there was nothing wrong on their end. Plugging directly into my modem allows me to access the Internet. When I wake up in the morning, the connection is back until 11 or later again. I ran WireShark but I'm not sure what to be looking for. There are a lot of random things from the LLMNR protocol like standard query A zmtvrjaql.
