View 2 RepliesI have a RealTek 8187 USB wireless adapter on my desktop computer that has an associated utility that allows me to manually select which of several competing WAP's to connect to. But that is good only for that particular adapter. My laptop has a different make of adapter that does not have this capability and many of my friends and neighbors lack the capability also. I have a situation where when I turn on my desktop, it automatically connects to a certain WAP, presumably because it has the strongest signal. However, at certain times of the day, traffic or other unknown interference blocks internet access for varying periods of time. I can usually go to my RealTek utility and switch connections to another WAP that has somewhat less signal strength (for example from Channel 1 to Channel 9 -- all within the same Wi-Fi network). Almost always I can restore internet access by doing this.is there generic software available that allows manually selecting WAP channels regardless of the particular brand of wireless adapter being used. Or is there some setting in either Windows XP or Windows 7 that would allow selectively choosing to connect to one channel of a network rather than another even if the signal strength is less.

Also just moving my desktop is not an option

• A long range Wireless adapter, PCI or PCIe
• A wireless bridge with long range
I am looking for a really powerful long distance network adapter with high gain antennas

I am looking for a more powerful wireless router that has a larger range. I want to have the ability to use the laptop at the house next door, so I need a range of like 150 ft, going through multiple walls (both concrete and wood) and still have enough for general Internet access.
My first question is if it's even possible and if so, what is a good router/system to use.
I would still need the ability to connect Ethernet to the router (at least 4 ports) and the wireless, obviously.
A major benefit as well would be the ability to install something like pfSense or DD-WRT onto for further management.
I have a realtek wireless usb adaptor on my hp desktop that was working until I took it out of the usb on the front of the tower and plugged it into a usb on the back of the tower. Now I can't get internet at all even if I move it back to the front! My network doesn't show up under connections. Both the playstation 3 and the netbook are picking up the wireless signal from the router.

On PC windows said, that maybe something wrong with the driver, I reinstalled it a few times, but same happened again, again. Both has Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI've recently lost my ability to access the internet at uni and as this is quite an inconvenience I am considering some alternatives, the most viable one I've managed to come up with hinges on the fact that I live in a building which is only a road and another building away from the main uni buildings (3 buildings on 2 city blocks), basically it looks like this: UNI BUILDING 1 | UNI BUILDING 2 |ROAD| UNI BUILDING 3 |ROAD| MY APARTMENT.So I'm thinking of building one of these: url.. or waiting for the r20000g (dual band) to come out and buying that.THEN the area I'm having a bit of trouble with: I need to get reception about 600-700m away through buildings, so I've been looking at Yagi antennas and such but can't seem to find any information on the following:
1. Will a high powered directional antenna go through a few buildings and still make it 1km (.6 miles)
2. How directional is a directional antenna? like if I point one in the general direction of the building how accurate do I have to be? (I have no problem buying 4-5 antennas if I need to)
3. Do I need a new Wi-Fi antenna for my laptops? it seems odd to me that a laptop would be able to transmit back 1km while I need a giant antenna to get to the laptop (I know its not this simple but it still seems odd)
Will a realtek wireless network adapter connect to a Linksys WRT 110 router from a wood frame house to a concrete building approx. 100 ft. away

View 2 Replies View Relatedi am setting up a network between two houses. I have two Amped Wireless SR300 repeaters and currently I am getting so-so signal strength between the repeaters. To remedy this issue, I purchased two EnGenius EAG-2408 external antenna's.My question is how to calculate how high to mount the antenna. A formula is preferable because I do not know the exact distance off hand and I will have to go out there and measure. I am estimating approximately 75 to 100 yards for the distance. Its flat, with a few trees/brush.

View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday I bought a linksys AE2500 usb network adapter. So I set it up on the computer downstairs from the router, roughly 30 ft distance. There is a desktop running a linksys pci card directly next to it. So I fire the computer up it see's the network but it won't connect to it. Then I take the computer up to the room the router is in and it connects. The range on the adapter says 300 ft and I do realize that there are walls and other obstructions that cause that number to fall but I find it hard to believe that the adapter is out of range but I can't think of anything else to explain it.

The wirless works fine when I am connect to my network at home, but I am only able to connect to the university's network when an ethernet cable is plugged in. Everybody else I know, who has a similar setup to myself has no problems connecting to the network without the ethernet cable and I was curious as to why this might be.
I am running on Windows 7 and the wifi adapter is a Realtek RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n
As I say I am quite a rookie when it comes to computers
When I install a micro-wifi-usb 802.11n with "Realtek RTL8188CU" on a old notebook with Windows XP I get maximum 1.5 to 2Mbits/s. Though installed on a newer notebook with Windows 7 I get 30Mbits/s.Other wifi-usb, Cisco Linksys WUSB100v2 does work on that Windows XP machine at 30Mbit/s, but the dongle is much larger The router Cisco WRT320N is just 5meters away and I always have excellent signal strength.I tried some other drivers without any luck. On the site of Realtek I don't find any driver except with some letter diverence at the end of RTL8188CU, which I also tried.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy wireless connection takes about 5 minutes to actually work once I reboot my windows computer. Once I start it, the wireless indicator in the bottom right corner of the screen shows that it is loading, but then freezes and doesn't let me use most applications on my computer. Then all of a sudden it will so a wireless signal and connection and everything works just fine. On the other hand, when I use the function key on my keyboard that turns off the wireless card before I restart my computer, the wireless stays off when I reboot. Then I turn it back on using the function keys and my wireless will connect automatically. Why is it that the wireless card/connection won't start up quickly if I just leave it on like people always do normally? Why is it that I have to toggle it on/off all the time for it to work connect quickly?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running an ASUS laptop with Windows 7. My wireless has been working fine, but my room is quite far from the router, so I bought a signal-booster USB aerial made by Realtek (REALTEK 11n USB Wireless LAN Driver and Utility). It came with a small software CD too which I installed, and it worked fine for two days and boosted my wireless signal. However (you knew it was coming, the story can't stay happy) soon the red light on the USB booster stopped blinking and it showed the red 'x' where my wifi connections are. I couldn't get it to re-establish a connection without doing a full system restore and re-installing the USB signal booster, which would then work again for a short amount of time (maybe a day, maybe an hour). And worse, now when the USB booster is unplugged from the computer my laptop will not return to recognising wireless connections like it did before I installed the USB signal booster. It simply does not find any connections - the only time it does is directly after I have re-installed the software from the small disc which came with the Realtek USB signal booster.
I have now uninstalled the Software and anything made by Realtek but still it is finding no connections. Now I would just like to find a way to get back to where I started when my computer was finding all wireless connections like normal... a connection with a weak signal is better than this nightmare of constantly restoring my computer just to get a brief connection
got my router all set up running and working fine on my computer downstairs.. but my computer upstairs is what im trying to get wireless going.. guessing my network card dosent support wifi is why its not picking it /nor any other houses close to me.. my network card is realtek RTL 8168c / 8111c family pci-e gigabite ethernet NIC ( ndis 6.20 )could of sworn tho at my old house when i had my computer hookd up it picked up my neighbors routers above me .. currently its saying theres no routers or anything to connect too..
