View 1 RepliesI've recently lost my ability to access the internet at uni and as this is quite an inconvenience I am considering some alternatives, the most viable one I've managed to come up with hinges on the fact that I live in a building which is only a road and another building away from the main uni buildings (3 buildings on 2 city blocks), basically it looks like this: UNI BUILDING 1 | UNI BUILDING 2 |ROAD| UNI BUILDING 3 |ROAD| MY APARTMENT.So I'm thinking of building one of these: url.. or waiting for the r20000g (dual band) to come out and buying that.THEN the area I'm having a bit of trouble with: I need to get reception about 600-700m away through buildings, so I've been looking at Yagi antennas and such but can't seem to find any information on the following:
1. Will a high powered directional antenna go through a few buildings and still make it 1km (.6 miles)
2. How directional is a directional antenna? like if I point one in the general direction of the building how accurate do I have to be? (I have no problem buying 4-5 antennas if I need to)
3. Do I need a new Wi-Fi antenna for my laptops? it seems odd to me that a laptop would be able to transmit back 1km while I need a giant antenna to get to the laptop (I know its not this simple but it still seems odd)
I have no problems with my adapter its just that my router is too far from my desktop and I need something that can reach far lengths , I don't recall what my wireless name is other than it uses 802 g type but it doesn't cut it when I want to play league of legends, so any recommendations? Also just moving my desktop is not an option

im looking to buy some long range antennas to boost my wifi signal, i currently have a TPlink WR2543ND, which does a decent job in my house but id like to get some signal just outside my house if possible. Would this be better suited for a long range antenna or a wireless access point?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi am setting up a network between two houses. I have two Amped Wireless SR300 repeaters and currently I am getting so-so signal strength between the repeaters. To remedy this issue, I purchased two EnGenius EAG-2408 external antenna's.My question is how to calculate how high to mount the antenna. A formula is preferable because I do not know the exact distance off hand and I will have to go out there and measure. I am estimating approximately 75 to 100 yards for the distance. Its flat, with a few trees/brush.
Repeaters:[URL]
-Transmit Power: Up to 20 dBm

I am looking for a more powerful wireless router that has a larger range. I want to have the ability to use the laptop at the house next door, so I need a range of like 150 ft, going through multiple walls (both concrete and wood) and still have enough for general Internet access.
My first question is if it's even possible and if so, what is a good router/system to use.
I would still need the ability to connect Ethernet to the router (at least 4 ports) and the wireless, obviously.
A major benefit as well would be the ability to install something like pfSense or DD-WRT onto for further management.
I would like to hook up 2 ip cameras to a server. I need to use 2 routers to do this. I already have the routers. router a is hooked up to the server. router b needs to connect wirelessly to router a. I can then hook up the ip cameras to router b. I just can seem to get it figured out.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 2 ssid signals setup at my workplace.
the 2nd one is for all guests and it's isolated from the lan+trusted(1st one) with a vlan feature.
the 1st one is for all trusted devices over wifi. the wifi channel is setup to allow mac addresses of the two asante security cameras. the cameras upload videos to an ftp on my server. the two will connect to the router at first, I can ping them or see them in 'my network'. give it a little time and they disappear. then I have to power off/on the router or the cameras to make them work for a few minutes. the process repeats.
the cameras make lots of connections to the ftp server. I'm suspecting they're flooding the router and it blocks them. occasionaly they will come back for a minute or two and disappear again as if blocked/unblocked.
I added their mac addresses in hopes of making them 'trusted' devices. I've tried them on both ssids. I checked and unchecked firewall/security checks and icsa settings. all other devices I tried, multiple phones and laptops work without problems on both ssids and they don't get blocked.
I have installed 8 cameras that go to my 8 camera DVR. I have a 4 channel router that goes to my Comcast cable modem. I would like to view my cameras from anywhere that I can get on a computer. I planning a wireless home network and would like to have WiFi internet access at my swimming pool ~150 feet from the house. There is only one wall between the location of the wireless router and the pool. Do all routers have similar range? If not what is a good model for this range, or would I need to add a range extender?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a supplier which i need to connect a site to site ipsec vpn connection to (from a draytek router). I have already done this on our main site with no problems using the local ip details of 192.168.1.0 and subnet 255.255.255.0 however i need to do the same on our DR site which uses the ip details of 10.1.0.0 and subnet of 255.255.0.0. Our supplier told me the 255.255.0.0 is already used at there end by a different customer so we are unable to connect the vpn and communicate (in theroy we can connect but our supplier cannot reply). We can setup a connection to another spare server on a different address using a different subnet but effectivly this would mean that communication would stop at that server and communcation to the overall network or specific server the supplier needs access to (on the 10.1.0.0 255.255.0.0 network) is not possible. I was thinking maybe an internal vpn server to server connection through win server may do it, 2 nic cards or routes in the server routing table but this all seems a bit messy. Our network consits of win 2003 and 2008 R2 servers and is basic network with modem-vpnfirewall-switch and devices on the internal network connecting to the switch.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAlthough I haven't looked through all the forum topics I couldn't find anything very similar to my situation. I have a rather large house and my modem/router (Netgear DGND3300 v2 due to DSL) is in the very corner. Given this most of the opposite corner of my house gets either poor or no connection; however, I do have an ethernet cable run across the house through the basement to my home theatre setup. This is where I encounter another problem, I need multiple devices to be connected via ethernet and I also need to have wireless in that same area. In my mind I picture myself connecting a second router to this ethernet cable through which I could have wired connections to all my devices, and a second router broadcasting wirelessly. I'm familiar with some types of wireless bridging, but I'd rather use more of a wired bridge concept if possible, but I've never really seen something like this. The question is, is this possible? Or, what is another possible way to achieve the same results? The only other thing I can think of is to run an ethernet hub from the original wired connection to my home theatre so I can connect multiple ethernet devices and run a separate wireless extender or something, but this just seems pricy.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Belkin NF5D8236-4 v3 as my main router. However, the signal range isn't the best throughout my home. After a little research and a tight budget, my thought is to purchase a Belkin N150 F9K1001 to serve as the primary router and then use the N F5D8236-4 v3 as an access point elsewhere in the house.I understand that the N150 cannot serve as an access point (hence the idea to use that as the primary), but that the N F5D8236-4 v3 can. Am I correct? Will my plan work? I can't spend much and a booster would cost more than the N150.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am new to the RV180W. I am running the most recent firmware--version 1.0.1.9.
I am having trouble getting FTP to work with my QNAP NAS.
QNAP indicates that I should forward ports 55536-56559 to my NAS. I created a custom service to accomplish this, and then, under port forwarding, I selected the service and forwarded it to the private IP that corresponds with the NAS.
However, the port forwarding configuration only allows me to specify *ONE* internal port. With other routers I have always specified the same private port *RANGE* that corresponds with the public ports that I have opened up.
I am trying to add a couple VOIP phone units that do not have their own router. They are designed to run of the existing router and have three ranges of UDP ports opened up. They also do not advise using internal (private) statics on the phones. So what they are asking for is three different ranges of UDP ports to be opened up to all behind the router?
I cannot figure out how to do this (or if it is possible) with a RV016.
