View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently lost my ability to access the internet at uni and as this is quite an inconvenience I am considering some alternatives, the most viable one I've managed to come up with hinges on the fact that I live in a building which is only a road and another building away from the main uni buildings (3 buildings on 2 city blocks), basically it looks like this: UNI BUILDING 1 | UNI BUILDING 2 |ROAD| UNI BUILDING 3 |ROAD| MY APARTMENT.So I'm thinking of building one of these: url.. or waiting for the r20000g (dual band) to come out and buying that.THEN the area I'm having a bit of trouble with: I need to get reception about 600-700m away through buildings, so I've been looking at Yagi antennas and such but can't seem to find any information on the following:
1. Will a high powered directional antenna go through a few buildings and still make it 1km (.6 miles)
2. How directional is a directional antenna? like if I point one in the general direction of the building how accurate do I have to be? (I have no problem buying 4-5 antennas if I need to)
3. Do I need a new Wi-Fi antenna for my laptops? it seems odd to me that a laptop would be able to transmit back 1km while I need a giant antenna to get to the laptop (I know its not this simple but it still seems odd)
i am interested in setting up a neighborhood wifi network between myself and friends. presently i own an Asus Rt N66u router along with a Hawking Technology range booster but haven't been able to get sufficient range from this. is their any router or networking device that i can use to at least achieve like 1 mile network range and coverage, which should be more that sufficient to accommodate my networking needs?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi am setting up a network between two houses. I have two Amped Wireless SR300 repeaters and currently I am getting so-so signal strength between the repeaters. To remedy this issue, I purchased two EnGenius EAG-2408 external antenna's.My question is how to calculate how high to mount the antenna. A formula is preferable because I do not know the exact distance off hand and I will have to go out there and measure. I am estimating approximately 75 to 100 yards for the distance. Its flat, with a few trees/brush.
Repeaters:[URL]
-Transmit Power: Up to 20 dBm
-Receiving Sensitivity: -93dBm
Antennas:[URL]
-Omni Directional Antenna
-18 degree vertical beamwidth

I am looking for a more powerful wireless router that has a larger range. I want to have the ability to use the laptop at the house next door, so I need a range of like 150 ft, going through multiple walls (both concrete and wood) and still have enough for general Internet access.
My first question is if it's even possible and if so, what is a good router/system to use.
I would still need the ability to connect Ethernet to the router (at least 4 ports) and the wireless, obviously.
A major benefit as well would be the ability to install something like pfSense or DD-WRT onto for further management.
use a linksys wireless-g range usb network adapter to connect with a computer?
View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday I bought a linksys AE2500 usb network adapter. So I set it up on the computer downstairs from the router, roughly 30 ft distance. There is a desktop running a linksys pci card directly next to it. So I fire the computer up it see's the network but it won't connect to it. Then I take the computer up to the room the router is in and it connects. The range on the adapter says 300 ft and I do realize that there are walls and other obstructions that cause that number to fall but I find it hard to believe that the adapter is out of range but I can't think of anything else to explain it.

I don't know of anything that has been installed in the last several months that is network related.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friends and me have been playing games on our laptops over adhoc networks for years now. However, we always have to be in the same room for it to have a good network coverage.
But as we all live in the same boarding house, the rooms can get crowded very easily. We tried playing in rooms next door to each other, but even then the connection was extremely bad.
I'm clueless in any wireless hardware such as routers, but I'm wondering if there is a device which I can plug my laptop to, and then it acts as the 'hub' of the adhoc network, being able to transmit & receive the signals much further out than any of our own laptops can.

What equipment do I need to get the signal to reach out to 300 feet?
I want to set up a wireless video security system around my farm. I have been having a lot of predator problems this year and I am tired of getting up in the middle of the night and running outside in my underwear to check on my livestock (especially now that it is winter) because my wife thought she heard something attacking the animals. I have been looking around at wireless wifi security cameras to use with my home wifi network and all of them ( like the Foscam FI8918W) use IEEE 802.11g standards. I have done a lot of research on this and there is just no consistent data about to do this. I know that are a lot of smart people here because I have posted here before and got some great answers. So, I am just going to tell you what I would like to achieve and you can tell me how (if possible) I can do it. I am willing to buy all new equipment if necessary. I need a omni-directional wifi G network with a minimum range of 400 feet. I have several buildings to cover so it has to be omni-directional. My house is located 350 feet from the furthest building, so I figure a 400 foot range should give me good consistent results. I already have an old Linksys WRT54GS router with Firmware Version: v1.52.8. It is located in my bedroom against an outside wall and even now I get some signal from it out at my farthest building (350 feet) and even browse the web with my laptop. But the signal is spotty and seems to come and go for no reason. What is really funny is that I have less signal in the second bathroom on the other side of the house, but I guess that is because of all the walls in between.
Now I have read that you can increase a routers broadcast strength by modifying the router settings. But you need special firmware like, Tomato, to do that and I have already tried to install , Tomato, to my router with no success. So if modifying the router software is necessary, I will need another router I guess.
1. A good strong router capable of IEEE 802.11g.
2. A good strong outdoor antenna that will connect to the router.
My problem is that I can find good routers and good antennas, but nothing that say they will work with each other. And another thing is that it appears to me from what I have read so far, that the stronger the antenna is, the more narrow the vertical broadcast field is. So, if I understand this right, with a strong antenna, the antenna and the receiving device have to be about the same height horizontally speaking. So if I put the antenna on the top of my house, it will basically shoot right over all my cameras. But if I put the antenna lower along an outside wall, then the cameras on the opposite side of the house won't receive signal. But again, this is just my understanding of what I read so far. You can see now why I am so confused about this. The more I read, the more I get confused. It seem like this should be simple, like, "Buy this router, Buy that antenna". Surly, I am not the first person who wants to extend their home network to a reasonable outdoor range. It's not like I want it to reach miles (that would be nice except for all the hackers trying hack my network).
Sending WiFi signal about 1/4 mile from my home to where my daughter lives so she can use her Samsung Galaxy2 Tablet on WiFi.There are homes, condos and trees in between us, so it is not a clear path.So far this is what I have done.I am using a modem and a Netgear WNR834B Wireless N Router.I connected a Hawkins Laptop Extender (HWREN Wireless 150N Mini Extender * single antenna outlet) into the router and connected a WiFi cable from the Hawkins to my tower outside above my roof and have attached a 10 dbi gain Trendnet antenna (omnidirectional) to the cable. But still the WiFi signal doesn't seem to be very strong at all when I test with my phone. And obviously, my daughters tablet does not see my router when she has her tablet search for WiFi.I also tried a 14dbi WIfi ASUS directional antenna and basically came up with the same outcome... she could not see the WiFi signal..My daughter lives in a condo and is not capable or allowed to install any outside antenna system whatsoever.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been looking around for quite some time and can't find a complete answer. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router handling my home wireless network located in the living room (let's call it 'Zone A').I have an ethernet cable running from that router to the other end of the house (let's call this one 'Zone B'), where the wi-fi signal is very weak. a. What is the technically correct way to have a strong wi-fi signal at Zone B (with the same SSID, key-phrase, etc.)? b. If I take another WRT54GL router, set the same SSID and key-phrase, disable its DHCP and plug it to the ethernet cable in Zone B - will that do the trick? I've tried the Linksys range extender at a friend's house and it turned out to be a big flop.
