Replace Linksys WRT54G Router
Nov 15, 2012
I had an issue yesterday with no internet access on my desktop computer; the message said "Network cable unplugged" so I called AT&T tech support for assistance. I have 2 Dell computers; a desktop and a laptop which I use wirelessly in the house. After doing several things from disconnecting the router to try and determine if the problem was with my router or an ethernet cable AT&T determined a port on my router which is 6 years old could be going bad and recommended I replace my router.I contacted Linksys yesterday; spoke to tech support for my WRT54G router and was given 2 model recommendations. One was a Model E900 N300 and a more expensive model; an EA2700 N600. There is a price difference of $40.00 USD between the 2 models. I could probably get by with the E900 N300 for $49.99 but the guy at Linksys was putting the pressure on me to buy the more expensive one for $89.99. I told him I'd have to think about it.

I have an older router, Linksys WRT54G, how crappy is this?. How much better speed/connection can I get from a new router? . If you have any suggestions for routers under $100 that would be a big upgrade from this please post it.

I am looking to replace my current WAG54GS Gateway with the EA6500. Problem is the new one does not have a built in ADSL2+ modem (I am in the UK and my ISP is Demon Internet). I therefore need to purchase a separate Modem to connect to the router.

I need to replace a dying Netgear FWAG114 wireless router, and the E4200 gets good reviews so I've been looking into it. I'm a software developer running 6 servers plus 3 laptops and 5+ other devices (iPad, Wii, Droid phones, BluRay...). I prefer to use a trusted PC list (enter MACs for all trusted devices) rather than WEP or WPA - is this available with the E4200?
I don't need VPN, but I do run a number of web servers, app servers and databases, so port forwarding is important - I notice the E4200 provides port range forwarding and single port forwarding - I assume this replaces the Rules and Services feature in Netgear - right?
Do you see any potential problems, given my needs, in using the E4200?

I own an HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC and recently purchased a Cisco E1500 to replace my aging WRTG54 wireless router. Since installation of the new router I keep getting dropped from my LAN and the internet with "connectivity issues" ... this only occurs on my notebook PC and not the other wireless devices I have in my home. I’ve done some searching on the internet and this seems to be a generic problem with the Broadcom 802.11b/g/n card the notebook uses. I have 2 questions:
1) Is there an easy way to adjust either the card or the router to deal with these issues and if not then
2) what is the best notebook card to replace the Broadcom with to assure these issues go away.

I have a linksys rv082 VPN router with 35-50 computers, 2 VPN connections, 4 servers. I wondering if replacing the linksys rv082 router with a cisco rv180 VPN router is a good idea. According to the rv180's specifications, it seems to be a good router, my concern is that it looks small in size in comparation with the linksys rv082. I wonder if the rv180 can handle the work and the trafic of my network. I would like to know if it is ok to replace it or what are the risks.

My home router is an aging D-Link DGL-4100 and I am looking to replace it.My max budget is ~$250 USD.
I use 2 Ubiquiti Unifi UAP-Pro APs in my home for WIFI access, so I have the WIFI aspect of my home network covered completely. All wiring in my home is either Cat5e or Cat6, my switch is a gigabit HP ProCurve 1810G-24, and my cable modem is a Motorola SB6120 (Comcast cable broadband). I have 7 IP cameras (security system), 4 streaming media players, several PCs, a server, and several other network connected devices. I am the only resident.
I am looking to maximize my WAN to LAN (& LAN to WAN) throughput while maintaining a very secure network. I also want the router to have reliable VPN. If it is a wireless router, I would most likely not utilize the WIFI feature, probably turning off the WIFI radios and just use the router functionality.
I don't have the time/patience to build a PFSense (or similar) box and learn the software, so am only considering an off-the-shelf solution. Yes I know that PFSense and Untangle are great, I simply don't have time to learn them presently or in the foreseeable future. So, which router for wired performance and security would you recommend?

I have an SMCD3GN which I put into bridge mode a while ago and used it as a modem alongside my Linksys WRT54G router. But the SMC is capable of Wireless N, while the Linksys is only capable of wireless G.So I want to turn my SMC into a router + modem again, but I can't figure out how to do it. I tried resetting to factory defaults by holding the reset button at the back of the unit for 30 seconds but it didn't work.I can get it to work with a wired connection, but when I type ipconfig /all into CMD, it doesn't show any default gateway, so I can't access the router online. I've tried various different IPs like 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, etc., but none of them work.

I have a bluray player that I want to get internet to that is downstairs. I would like to use my old Linksys WRT54g ver 2 router to do this. I just put DD-WRT firmware on it. I have a Linksys E1000 as my primary router. All I want to do is be able to to put the Secondary router (WRT54G) downstairs near the bluray player and run an ethernet cable from the lan port on the router to the ethernet port on the bluray player to get internet access. What is the best way to do this? Client bridge or Client mode?

Well the model of my linksys is in the title so If you need It have a look at the title, so what I wanted to know was, what exactly does resetting my router do (be as detailed as possible) Is It hard to reset a router? and do you think that in my case resetting is necessary.
I forgot my wpa key, also my default password Is not "admin" I'm pretty sure I changed it after I got my router.

I'm looking to upgrade my WRT54G as I have had NO luck in getting my Galaxy Tab to connect through it so far (can connect and get an IP address but can't get out to the web) and have had intermittent problems with my Blu-ray lately. I am looking for something with the best affordable range, live 3 floors down from the current one and get about 3/4 signal strength so there's not much interference it seems. I watch a lot of online content through Hulu, Netflix, and LMB games and share with 2 other people.I am looking at the E series, probably the E1200, 1500 or 1550 as they seem to meet my needs. Any users have any advice about the ease of install and use of either of these? Or would it be better to get a gateway as we are considering going from DSL to U-verse service, twice the speed for $2/month more

I just reset my router to the factory settings in order to make some changes to it. However, when I tried to change the SSID to a unique name, I was unable to connect my computer to the wireless network. I then reset my security settings and left the SSID to the default name "linksys_SES_54125" and it is working just fine. I tried to connect with two separate computers both running Windows 7. My router is the WRT54G v8
why I wouldn't be able to connect to my wireless network when I change the SSID?

I have tried multiple times to hard reset my Wireless G WRT54G ver.2 router, but have had no success. I held the reset for 15 sec, 30 sec, 2 min, etc and also tried holding it and then unplugging it and then plugging it back in. I've tried everything that I have seen suggested. My problem is that I don't know what the password is to access my router's web utility thing and I need to change the IP address. With every reset attempt, I hope that the default admin password will work, but sadly no.

We use a 3825 router to screen alot of the junk from the internet side or our firewall. Its worked well for the last 4 years buthas rebooted multiple times in the last month for no apparent reason. At this point I think I would prefer to replace it.Our current internet link is 100Mbps and this router handles that quite well. Is there an equivalent that I should replace it with, or should I just buy another 3825 ?One with an OOB management port would be nice.

in my lab environment, I have a site-to-site VPN between a Pix515E and Cisco 3845 router, using AES-256/DH-5/SHA for isakmp and AES-256/SHA/PFS group5 for the site-to-site VPN, I can only push about 26Mbps IPSec traffics (tested with Iperf). CPU on the Pix515E is running at 96% utilization
Now if I replace the Pix515E with another Cisco 3845 router, I can push about 100bps. Why such a big difference between the data sheet and actual real world

I have a Linksys WRT54G2 v1 router which is having a daily problem of connectiing to the Internet on my home wireless LAN. My temporary solution is to disconnect the power from the router for about 15 seconds and plug it back in .... and all is well.... at least for another day or so.The real problem is that instead of properly connecting to IPv4 address 192.168.1.100 ..... it randomly connects to Autoconfiguration IPv4 address 169.254.29.54 When this problem occurs the SSID list shows both my 192 connection as well as a public network with no Internet connection?
I've used this router for several years without a problem until I recently bought a new Canon wireless MG5320 printer which initially had problems connecting to my LAN. After a telco with tech support the printer works fine but now I am now experiencing the Autoconfig address problem. My LAN consist of the WRT54G router, a Motorola cable modem, a Lenovo laptop running Win7 64bit, a Hp desktop running Win7 64bit and the Canon wireless printer. (all connected wirelessly)

I have a linksys router WRT54G connected to a modem supplied to me by Time Warner Cable. Just last night, for some reason my internet stopped working. After calling Time Warner Cable internet support, I found out that the modem is working. If I connect my laptop (Dell model which is running on Windows 7) directly via cable to the modem, I can connect to the internet. BUT if i connect my modem to the router, and then connect my laptop via cable or wireless to the router, I can't connect to the internet. When I open up my network window on the computer, I see that my laptop is connected to the router and the router is connected to the internet but I can't connect to the internet. I tried calling linksys customer service and my insurance ran out so yea ... On the laptop, i ran a troubleshooting program and it gave me an error stating that it failed to connect to the DNS server and I should contact the internet provider. Time Warner Cable told me that if connected to the modem directly, I could access the internet indicating that there's an error in the router.

I have an old wireless router lying behind me and I want to use that old router as a switch. That old router is a knock-off,no-name router brand called "Gigafast" and the model number is WF19-CAPR. There are also variants to that router name as well. The router that I currently have is a Linksys WRT54G wireless-G router. I'm planning to upgrade the wireless router in favor of Wireless-N in the near future.I want to know how can I use that particular Gigafast router as a switch and I want to link that router up to my WRT54G router. The scenario goes as follows:
Cable internet connection ----> WRT54G router ---> Gigafast router (as a switch)
The IP address for the WRT54G router is 192.168.1.1, while the Gigafast router is 192.168.1.254. I may know by now that I have to disable DHCP on the gigafast router and I have to change an IP address to something that is "not in range" with the WRT54G router, am I right?I want to expand the number of ports, so I can connect with future devices such as a VoIP ATA adapter, a laptop and possibly an entertainment box (i.e. Apple TV or Boxee box)

Is there anything different I need to do to configure the Edimax repeater on a PPPoE connectionMy router IP ("Local IP address") shows 10.10.0.1 instead of the "192.168.1.1" that all the documentation online seems to suggest. What am I doing wrong?
