Can Ping But Not Browse
Jan 19, 2011We've got about 15pcs at work, all on one network. All connect to one switch, and the router connects to the switch so all has internet access. Four pcs has got windows vista on, the rest XP. Yesterday I tuned on the one pc with Vista on, but could not connect to a mapped drive. I checked in the network places, i could see only three pcs, all three xp pcs. I can browse the internet, but not the pcs on my local network, and I can ping the pcs on the network.

Rest of the pcs that have been on the network before are browsing quite fine. Even when I connect new PC directly to the router LAN ports, problem still persists. I've tried four different new laptops so far. I've even intalled a new router to no avail.

Feb 6, 2011I've been stuck with a connection problem on my desktop for 6 months and nothing I do can fix it. My computer technician friends can't fix it either, so here's my last gasp attempt to get it online before I throw the machine out of the window.I'm using XP, don't recall ever having downloaded any Service Packs, and am trying to connect wirelessly to my home network here in France. Laptops and iPhones connect no problem. I don't think it's the wireless network card (which I bought nearly 5 years ago) as I had the same connection problem in my last apartment, with the same internet provider. I eventually borrowed an ethernet cable and managed to get it working wirelessly, but I have no idea how I did it.
The computer connects to the wireless network but I can't browse or ping. I've flushed dns, tried to input the ip manually, checked and unchecked LAN settings, checked and unchecked Internet Protocol TCP/IP, i've tried winsock, I've done the netsh reset and NOTHING worksI've checked the security settings, password and encryption a hundred times, I've disabled the firewall and today I've pulled out the recovery disks It didn't.Interestingly, the desktop has suddenly decided to go online once or twice (after I'd disabled Norton) but as soon as I shut down, I'm back to square one

Cisco Routers :: RVS4000 Connects To ISP Can Ping And Tracer But Cannot Browse
Sep 22, 2012Router connects to ISP but cannot browse the Internet. I have updated the firmware to 2.0.3.2 and that did not work. Reset the router to factory settings and that did not work either. Router had worked until the ISP changed the ONT. The router worked initally after the ONT was changed, but that changed sometime during the day as it did not work that night. The ISP gave me a netgear router and that works, so I can connect, but I would rather the RVS4000 would work. I assume a setting at the ISP, but do not know which one. I get an error on the computer "name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded" I can ping, tracert and my little weather gadget works, but a web page will not display

I assisgned an IP address to the switch some time ago, but never had cause to use it (as it was purhcased as a spare).The problem I have now is that I cannot ping the device or browse to it via IE. Using hyperterminal and the CLI i have attempted to assign the same IP address, but i get a warning along the line of already assigned.I have set IP's to other 3COM model switches without problems. why I cannot ping this device or assist in connecting to it via IE?

I can Ping it and can connect network shares by using it's IP address but it wont appear in my Network as an Icon. My wifes win 7 laptop does see the NAS in her network. I can also see my wifes laptop in the network view. So it must be my laptop.
It must be that my laptop is not resolving the name properly for some reason.

Feb 24, 2011We have two offices separated by a WAN.Office A is our main office that has all of our servers, including domain controllers and active directory, on our own network.Office B is a temp. office that is piggybacking off of our sister company's network, but the computers there still connect back to Office A servers to login/access services. However, Office B connects to the sister company's local domain controllers for DNS/WINS.We're having an issue where NetBIOS names of the other office are not always showing up when browsing for computers within the WinXP Windows Explorer (My Network Places --> Entire Network --> MS Windows Network --> domain A). It seems entirely random whether or not we can see the other office's computers. We can still ping/remote to them, but cannot browse to them.
It would normally be a non-issue, but some of our software apps require us to "Browse" to the network server location, rather than being able to type in the address, during installation. Can't install if we can't browse the Office A servers. Obviously has something to do with WINS not always populating/updating, but I'm not sure what or how to fix this.

Most functions work well. 4 wireless computers (1 Macbook, 3 Win 7), 1 wireless android, 1 wired Win7 computer, 1 ethernet connected hard drive, 1 ethernet connected printer. All computers can ping router, access hard drive, access internet, ping android and ping Macbook.However, router, nor any computer, can't ping Win7 computers. Apparently IP based connections between WinX computers is blocked. My real applications are to Remote Desktop Connect from 1 Win7 computer to another, or to run a DLNA music server on 1 Win7 computer, accessed by another. (the LAN connected computer is the server, accessed by a wLAN client. All worked fine on WRT54G router, but can't connect thru E4200. When these apps failed, I tried PING, and that failed as well.All computer's IP addresses are properly served from E4200 via DHCP, and are visible thru the router's DHCP Reservation panel.

Jan 12, 2011This started out as a printer issue and then evolved into a networking issue.let's see if i can include all the details here. the laptop in question is having problems talking to other internal network computers/printers. i am on a 192.168.10.? network, the laptop has a dhcp assigned address, my domain controller/dns/dhcp server has an address of .3, i have a fileserver at .9, my default gateway is .1 the laptop can ping all 3 of those computers.i have a printer with .130 address, the laptop times out when pinging it. there are around 15 or 20 other computers on the network with dhcp assigned addresses.so far i cannot get the laptop to ping any of those.
The same thing happens whether i am connect using the Local Area connection or wireless, so 2 different NICs, same laptop though.the laptop can ping any outside address, the firewall is turned off, the other computers that i cannot ping can ping each other and the printer. here's the real kicker, i noticed while running ping 192.168.10.130 -t when i do a repair on the network connection, the darn thing will ping the 130 address 3 times then start timing out again? is going on? i have killed every weird ass service i can think of, i have booted up in safemode with networking with the same result. i have signed in as a different user, i have looked at the routing, the host file, nothing looks weird to me at all. i have also run the winsock fix for xp......
Windows XP Cannot Ping Address 169.254.10.10
Aug 28, 2012I bought a usb printer server to connect my usb printer to my router. USB cable to the print server and cat 5 from the print server to the router. The print server has a static fixed ip of 169.254.10.10 and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 I can ping the printer server and it works perfect from my windows 7 laptop. When I attempt to set it up on my windows xp (SP3) laptop I am not even able to ping the 169.254.10.10 address. On the windows 7 laptop i can navigate to the print servers menu by placing 169.254.10.10 in the address bar of internet explorer. No so with the xp laptop.What is different about the ip configuration between win xp and win7. how to get the xp laptop to "see" the print server. Want to keep the print server at the default settings if possible.
