I understand ip addressing and what a subnet is.But why is it sometimes I connect two things together,it always requires a subnet mask, and other times no? For example when I try to connect two computers together, it requires both IP and subnet mask.But if I use FTP software all it ask for is IP.Same thing when connecting to a website through their ip, doesn't require subnet.

The problem is that I would like to have 255.255.255.0 as subnet but it should still be possible to access 10.2.2.200. Can I add Static route for oldhardware in XP without adding gateway settings? The most simple would be to put all on same subnet but it is not possible due to a various reasons. The computers are running Windows XP

This time I took the RV042G, hoping that the higher age of this product comes with a more mature firmware.So far the functions I need, work satisfying. There is only one issue: The subnet-mask is only configurable using a dropdown-menu. I've read the posts from the Cisco-Support staff saying, that this is because it is only a SMB Router. So, we are a small business and we use the 172.20.x.y net for several reasons. One of it is to distinguish and group several network devices using the third block of the IP. Eg. our printers IPs start with 172.20.5.x and so on.
My question is: Is it really impossible to change the subnet-mask dropdown-menu to a simple text-field in the frontend? Because it is possible to change the subnet to whatever one needs by a little cURL-magic: [code] This sets the new subnet-mask permanently (even survives a reboot and is displayed correctly on the system-status page) and I have not discovered any problems.The only thing is, if you change settings on the setup -> network page, the netmask is reset and you have to rerun this script.
Have a problem with a laptop connecting to a Wireless Router. The laptop was working fine on the last router which was on an ADSL Network.. (not that that matters),When the new router (Virgin Media / Cable) was installed all other laptops where connecting to it without any probs, but not this one.The laptop in question still receives an IP address, Subnet mask and Gateway from the router - Vista says Local only, no internet access. It cannot ping anything else on the network either. When I do ping it comes back destination host unreachable.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Cisco Valet wifi router that works fine with my laptop and my computer that has a usb wifi adapter. The problem is that for some reason when I try to connect my moms computer to the router it can only connect to the guest router and when I try to connect to the regular router it just fails even when I use the correct password. I have tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing it for the usb wifi adapter for my moms computer (NetGear N150 USB Adapter) and its nothing works. Her computer by the way is an Acer Windows XP SP3 machine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just gotten a DIR-615 and replaced a working linksys G router. I configured it to work with my ipad (wireless N), my laptop-win 7 (N), and my desktop-vista (USB connected N). Everything works ok,. I'm using WPA personal, WPA2only, AES encryption, 3600, 802.11n only, auto 20/40 mhz channel width, invisible.
Here's the problem. As I powered up and shut down the laptop each day, it wouldn't connect to the router. I could see the connection, but windows said it couldn't connect. I had to go and unplug the router, count to 10, and then plug it in, and tell the laptop to connect and then it would connect it would be fine.
I thought it might be a compatibility with the laptop driver, but after powering down the desktop today, I had to do the same power cycle on the router to get the desktop to connect. So then I went and turned off the IPAD and had the same thing happen. 3 for 3.
I'm pretty sure its router settings and not the 3 devices, this never happened with the Linksys router, but I don't know what to change.
One other odd thing, when I view the network in windows, the DIR-615 icon is there (for about 15 secs), and then it disappears (for about 5 secs), and then reappears (15 secs), disappears (5 secs), etc. - almost like its dropping out for 5 secs... I haven't noticed a performance hit, but haven't transfer big files yet.
I was excited to learn that USB printer support was added to the E4200. I'm disappointed to find that the USB printer option that is available in firmware version 1.0.02 requires Cisco Connect software. There is no version of Cisco Connect for Linux. I was hoping that this would allow the printer to be shared among my Win7 desktop, Win7 laptop, and my Linux desktop running Ubuntu 10.10. No such luck. WIth the printer connected to the router I can print with any one computer. My previous configuration had the printer connected to my WIn7 desktop so that desktop had to be turned-on to print. The bottom line is that I still can't print from the Linux box without turning on the desktop machine. Cisco please provide a way to connect to the printer without using the Connect software! Or provide a java version that can be run on any OS.

I have 2 nics in my win7 system, NIC 1 connect to leased line and NIC2 is connected to organization LAN for internet. Both the ip add are in same subnet. when both the cables are plugged in to nics, leased line link connected to nic1 goes down. It wouldn't come up untill the cable from nic 2 is plugged out.Basically i wish to be connected to both the networks simultaneously.

Here's the setup I'm trying to build:
Internet -> Master ADSL modem/router (No NAT, no DHCP) -> Slave cable router (NAT, DHCP)
I want to connect 3 Xboxes to the master router with external IPs to avoid the whole "moderate/strict" NAT nightmare. Then I'll connect everything else (PCs, Macs, wireless devices etc) to the Slave router which will assign IP addresses and do the NAT thing. Both routers are Netgear N150s (master is ADSL, slave is Cable).
Here's what I've tried so far:
Master router:
All IP addresses supplied by ISP
Internet IP: xxx.68.160.143
DNS: xxx.xxx.3.xxx and xxx.xxx.6.xxx
Router IP: xxx.68.160.142

Everything was fine after the change and the network had a noticeable change in speed.But when I came back in on Monday the Internet was down. So I tried trouble shooting the switch to see if there was a loop or something like that and put it into managed mode so I could look at the config page and take advantage of the STP function. When trying to get to the config page I entered the default IP into my browser and a logon appeared so I tried to login and it failed then I noticed that the title of the browser tab said RVS4000. So out of curiosity I entered the creds for the router and lo and behold it let me in to the router. The router has a static IP and is using a different subnet then the default IP of 192.168.2.1 that the switch has. I have put the old switch back and removed the new one from production but can still get to the router with either IP, it's static address and the 2.1 address.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat I am trying to do is I have one switch with say a 10.1.9.1 sub-net I need to have one of the ports to be trucked with two vlans one for DSL and the other for a local connection with the sub-net of 10.1.5.1 both of the sub-nets are configured in the core as 9 and 5 so I have port 0 set up as a trunk and it is set up as ge-0/0/0.0 vlan_5, vlan_192 on the 10.1.9.1 subnet switch. The DSL is working but the local is not pulling a 10.1.5.1 IP and has no connectivity. Everything looks as if it is configured correctly but still the DSl is working but not the Local connection.

All of this has been working fine until this morning when one of the laptops won't connect to the internet. when I run the trouble shooting guides on it I get messages that the problem is that the modem won't connect to the internet. However, the other laptop (this one) is working fine. when I look at the network map i see both computers and a green line to the modem. on this computer, there is also a green line from modem to internet. the other computer shows a res x on the modem to internet line. this is a sudden change i have restarted the computer the modem and the router. I can also conenect this computer to the internet via a mifi that I have but not the other laptop. there are no red x's on any of the hardware when I go to the "manage" computer.

2- laptop2 is windows XP with 192.168.1.2, same submask as above.
Laptop1 connects via CAT5 (non-crossover) RJ-45 into a switch (port 1). Laptop2 connects via CAT5 (non-crossover) RJ-45 into port 2 of switch. Both ends of the CAT5 are, of course, connected into each laptop's network connector.pinging resulted in timed out from both.
