Sep 18, 2011I am renovation my own house, and I have started to hard wire for the network/s, but I am also trying to incorporate so much more than any previous “wireless” setup I have had, well I am a bit confused to say the least.I would like to set up a home network and media server system which includes:Internet browsing (multiple rooms and wireless) File sharing, printer sharing, scanner etc Music/Video sharing/streaming, TV etc.I have started wiring (we are renovating) with Cat5e, and have just replaced the old POTS (telephone) wiring with Cat5e and taken the individual telephone wires (including the incoming telephone cable) back to one central connection unit in a network patch panel. This has improved the speed of my DSL download connection speed from 1.2mbs to 6.2mbs. unreal!, so that did get me a bit fired up!I am currently wiring data points (Cat5es from each room) back to the same panel, but to be honest I am not really sure where to go from there! Also, I have wired Sat cables back to this point ready to be connected to sat TV (dish) in case if we get it. This patch panel is in a small passageway that goes through to the garage from the house. It is conveniently located next to the mains board which I have just replaced. My original idea was to put any extra needed equipment in the same location, but looking at it, I think that I may have to think again, for there is little room. I have found a small alcove in the upstairs games room which has a shelf, and which could take any hardware, also it will be dust free (unlike the place leading to the garage). I can run as many cables as needed from this location to the patch panel, but obviously I would like to know how many, as I am not familiar with networking on this scale, my only other experience being wireless setups. For example, would the switch need to be located where the patch panel is, or else can it be on the shelf with the other stuff? (away from the panel), and the existing D-link 4 port router?? is this no longer required?Im presuming i will need an old PC or some sort of media storage device here too... no ideas with this either. Have tried asking three different computer stores, got three different answers...?!
Have I dropped a clanger wiring to the passageway, when infact any server/switch or whatever wont be in the same location?Also, I am planning on getting a MAC book, and would like to use this on the system sometimes (might not be relevant), just thought to mention. And, I was thinking of trying Linux, as I am fed up with all the windows problems. But not sure if that is a good idea either.We have TVs in the (when its finished) media room, also three other areas, which I would like to get connected so that they will be able to get either TV or watch a film from storage wow this is getting complicated and if it matters I do have a PS3, which we only really bought to use as a TV storage system/recorder.

Configuring Digital Fax To Network Folder Located On A Home Media Server?
Feb 13, 2012I am having difficulty getting my HP Officejet Pro 8500(A910) configured to save digital faxes to my Iomega 2TB Home Media Sever (cloud edition). My home network is setup through a Linksys E4200.I was able to successfully configure it to save to a folder on my PC, but I do not want to leave it running 24/7.I believe the breakdown is in the Authentication part of the setup... It asks for the Windows username and password, which works fine for the PC setup but not for anywhere else. Do I use the UN & PW for the home media server if I'm saving to one of its folders? If so, how do I correctly type the path? It is communicating with the folder and leaving an alphanumeric file saved inside the folder when I use the 'save and test' option, but it breaks down from there.

Feb 27, 2011We have an Asterisk/FreePBX phone system located behind an ASA 5505 device where we are having problems with sip inspection.
We connect to three different phone providers, and things works as expected for 2 of the 3 providers,but for the last one (Draytel) we are having problems with sip inspection.
The key difference about the VoIP provider where we are having problems is that they are using differetn servers for the voice (RTP) traffic than the server we are registered with to establish SIP sessions.
sip inspection is configured with the default out of the box options.The problems we see are this:
1. For ingoing calls sip inspection does not open the required pinhole to allow the traffic to flow through. As a result we can not hear the voice of the calling party, but voice from our side is passed through ok.As a workaround we have added and ACE allowing traffic in the used UDP (RTP) range from this VoIP providers ip addresses to pass through the ASA, and with that in place incoming calls work.
2. Outgoing calls doesn't work because sip inspection doesn't kick in, and as a result of this we forward internal ip addresses in the SIP / SDP body to the VoIP provider. I'm not sure whether this is a consequence of sip inspection not kicking in for this provider, or a result of having added the ACE for an ip ragnge that covers the ip address we register with.
As stated above sip inspection does work as expected for two other providers where all traffic goes through a single server.We actually have had this working with ASA firmware 7.2(4), but as that version intermittently had a problem where sip inspection would stop working (fixable by power off/on or a clear command), then we decided to upgrade.

May 28, 2011I have a desktop, Sony VAIO laptop, and a Motorola router and modem combination. Both computers are running Windows 7 professional. The desktop is running the 32 bit version and the laptop the 64 bit software.When I first got my router, I could access my laptop from the desktop but after a crash on the desktop and reinstallation of everything, I can no longer access the laptop. I have set up file sharing on the laptop but it still will not allow access. Aug 11, 2012I have this motorola router, SURFBOARD SVG1202 and I can't connect to my university VPN. It says my router is blocking the communication. After some days trying to understand why, I saw that it was needed to enable some options at 192.168.0.1. So, I went there and enabled IPsec PassThrough and PPTP PassThrough under the router options and also added my MAC Addr. Then I restarted the router, However when I try to connect into it again (via DHCP, auto IP), it says "null/limited connection" ( I cant even try a vpn connection, Since it is null/limited, I have to choose static ip mode, inserting a IP/gateway/my service DNS under network options, then I can connect to internet again (see image), but router is still blocking the VPN access, hanging at "verifying account. And password." later gives error 619 related to router blocking

Jan 23, 2012I have a WiFi setup where the wifi signal can go to 2 houses on my long-range property. One wifi router (Motorola WR850G w/ newest firmware update) is up on a pole between 2 of the houses. I could access it fine via wifi on my PC ever since i set it up a while back, but I was messing with it one day last week (nothing major changed), and all of a sudden now I cannot access the router setup page no matter what! (IP=192.168.10.1 by default).... it just simply times out now and gives me the 30 seconds loop to a page not displayed error in my browser.
I really would like to reset it via wifi, since its up powered on the pole outside, it'd be difficult to get up there and reset it myself. Is there a way I can get access to the page again in any way, by only using wifi from my PC????
The WiFi works great either way, and pinging to the router is 1ms so I just don't get it! Things I've done:
1. Pinged router, pings fine from any PC via WiFi...
2. Changed PC from DHCP, to 192.168.10.8 to get a non-used IP, since maybe it was timing out to the 192.168.10.7 IP I was using via DHCP. No go, it still times out no matter which PC or IP I have!

Feb 21, 2012I have a Motorola SBG901 router. Typing ipconfig showed that 172.18.8.1 is the Default Gateway and this is the URL I always used to access the router login page.
I reset the router today by holding the reset button. Now typing the URL 172.18.8.1 does not work. The router user guide says to go to 192.168.0.1. I have tried this but it also does not work. For both I just get the "problem loading page" in Firefox.
The Internet works fine both with an ethernet connection and wirelessly. My only issue is that I cannot access the Motorola router login page. I could access it fine this morning before I reset the router.

Mar 15, 2011Hardware: Modem-Motorola SBV5222 Router-Linksys E2000(Cisco brand name? I didn't buy the router) I use a PC with windows xp with sp 2 and 3 installed.Problem: I can use the internet just fine when I am connected to the router, my pc is connected directly to the router via cat 5 but when I directly connect to the modem I get limited to no connectivity. I'm not using a proxy server and before the router was set up(I live with roommates who set up the wireless network.) I could connect to the modem just fine. I can't repair the connection since it seems to be unable to renew the ip address. I've also tried to manually configure my ip address though I'm sure it wasn't the issue.I've racked my brain to think of a simple solution and it doesn't seem one is apparent and I'm almost sure it's something to do with xp and I'm not so great with software.

Sep 28, 2011I'm not that great at networking, I'm pretty much a novice but I'm trying to connect a modem and router to my computer but get around bridging the modem if possible. You see, I am working with AT&T and their dsl modem access page only works for me if the modem is unbridged. If I bridge the modem, I cannot get on the page again to unbridge it while I am trying to hook up my router. When I need them to unbridge the modem, I have to stay on hold for hours. One guy even told me that he did unbridge the modem, but since my internet persisted not to work, he told me my ethernet card went bad of a sudden on my computer. I knew this was incorrect so after a few more hours on hold, I had a lady debate with me that she was not unbridging my modem since it was my ethernet card that was bad and not the bridging. Finally, laughing to herself, she unbridged the modem for me and it worked

Apr 22, 2012I have a 192.168.1.xxx network connected to Verizon FIOS via Actiontec MOCA / router. I also have a 192.168.15.xxx network connected to Comcast via Motorola VT2442 router (used for Vonage) and a Motorola SB6121 cable modem.
Each network has it's own gigabit switch connected to each router. The two networks are physically separated but switches and routers are physically side by side.
What is the best configuration to allow devices on 192.168.1.xxx network to communicate with devices on the 192.168.15.xxx network (share printers, NAS, etc), but still have each network served by it's respective ISP, and each device still get it's dhcp, dns, gateway, etc from each respective router?

Jan 12, 2012I have a network that is currently set up in the following way:Modem -> vonage Motorola router -> wireless router Most computers are hard wired to the Motorola router. Some other ones connect via the linkseys wireless router. All computers are able to connect to the Internet. The problem I have is that I will be setting up a home computer as a file server connected to the Motorola router. The network acts as though it is two meaning that computers on one router can't see computers on the other router. What steps should I take in order to make all computers accessible through both routers.When I type 192.168.1.1 from a computer on the Motorola router, I get nothing, when I type in my actual ip address, I get the Motorola router. When I type in 192.168.1.1 from a linkseys connected computer, I get access to the linkseys router.
