Block Facebook And Few Websites From Netgear Wireless Router?
Sep 25, 2011
All of my clients are accessing internet through Netgear wireless router. From the router's "Block Sites" option, I've inserted all of the IP address of facebook & this was working fine.

I am attempting to block Facebook on a WRT160N firmware v3.0.00. I have a successful policy that blocks edit.com for instance and attempted to add url... I don't want to add keyword blocking as multiple news articles are in regards to Facebook. We simply do not want the Facebook website allowed. I tested the other policies on a network-wide setting, applying it to all IPs successfully, added Facebook to them and it goes right around the block. My guess is that Facebook is most likely designed to make it purposely difficult to block.
I went through the recent articles in search, but they primarily dealt with incorrect application of the policy (spec'ing MAC, or IPs), which isn't the case here. Eventually I will apply the policies to specific Macs, but I want them to work first.

I want to block sites like facebook during my workday but allow the rest of the internet.
The attached settings block facebook as desired during the filter times but after 6:30pm the filter expires and the entire internet is blocked (not just facebook). All of my browsers act as if they are hanging and won't load pages until I disable the filter.
I've also tried creating two different filters (one at a time). The first allowed full internet access all the time and the second allowed access the opposite times of the work filter. But to no avail.

On E4200 Firmware Version: 1.0.03, I managed to successfully set up "Internet Access Policy" (not the "Parental Controls") to set up the times when internet access is disabled for various IPs on my network.
But I could't setup a policy to block facebook.com. What I am doing wrong? See the attached screen shot. I did click the "Edit List" and apply this polity to the IP Address Range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254.

I recently purchased an E-2500, but notice that in parental controls I can only block 6 or 8 websites. In my WRT54GS I could just create additional rules and they would work. But in this device I am limited on the sites that can be blocked per device. How I can block additional sites?

I can log in my facebook account, check notifications, but that's it. Images won't load, the page won't render properly, can't check messages or use games or apps. Another thing worth nothing is that the page loads extremely slowly. Most other websites work normally. This has been going on for 3 days now.
I've done lots of troubleshooting already. I normally use Google Chrome so I tried IE and Mozilla but the page looks the same. The default font (Times New Roman) and white background are the symptoms of something (what?). I've only got a wireless connection and I'm suspecting there could be a problem there because my wife has the same problem on her laptop. We share the wifi connection. We've tried a lot of things: clear browsing data (cache, cookies, etc.) flush dns, restart computers, browsers, update anti-virus software, but no success, so far.
This looks normal:
C:>ping facebook.com
Pinging facebook.com [69.171.224.37] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 69.171.224.37: bytes=32 time=317ms TTL=230
Reply from 69.171.224.37: bytes=32 time=314ms TTL=230[code]....
So something must've happened around 3 days ago when everything still worked fine. One thing I haven't investigated is this wifi device: Huawei E585. I have no idea how to do any troubleshooting with it. one more thing I tried: proxy servers. I thought our ISP might have changed something somewhere (although all our friends have no problems) so I tried to log in through a few different proxy servers. The login page looked normal so I logged in. The page kept loading forever but it never showed any content. I didn't even get to see that Times New Roman font. But then again, it couldn't be an issue with my facebook account because I can use it normally on my cell phone. Well, as normally as you can use it on a cell phone.

I have a home network that consists of two routers. First I have my cable modem that is connected to an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. I tend to use that as the 'n' network for my computers so any devices using n networking connect to that.I then have a cable that goes from my Apple Airport Extreme Base Station to a Linksys E3000 router. I tend to use that as my g router and connect many devices that only have g wi-fi to it.Here is the problem:Because of a couple children that have iPod Touches and Macbooks I like to have them connect to the E3000 since it has great website blocking. I wish the Apple Base Station had website blocking but as far as I see it doesn't. Also, this website blocking has worked great since I installed the router but here is the problem. They frequently have to print items and they're unable to print since it won't find the printer.
The printer that I have is connected by Ethernet cable to the Apple Base Station It appears I have two ways of connecting the E3000 router to my Base Station. The way I currently have it connected is the E3000 is connected to the Apple router through the Internet port on the back. By doing this I get full internet and website blocking but I am unable to print through it. Yet if I connect it to the Apple router through one of it's numbered (1-4) ports, I still get internet, I'm able to print, but yet the website blocking does not work.Since the Apple base station doesn't have website blocking as far as I know the only way I can think of getting around this is to replace my Apple Base Station with another E3000 but I don't want to do this unless I have to.

I went through all discussions regarding how to block access to some web sites. And I was trying to implement them but it didn't work. I've used 887G-3G-K9 router and UC540, and I'm not sure if it's possible to do that on them or I need to get a license for that or to buy ASA. How can I check that URL blocking is available feature on those devices?
I've used 2 methods:
1) ACL
2) class-map and policy-map
class-map match-any http
match protocol http url "*facebook.com*"
match protocol http url "*www.facebook.com*"
[Code]....

How to configure a TrendNet TEW-692GR to block/limit Facebook and other websites on one or all computers that access the wireless router. We homeschool and the boys are having trouble dealing with the distraction of social media while using their computers to get school work done.
I've tried listing FB IP address ranges (the 66s, 69s and the 204s) in Access Control and under IP Range Block Rules, and using the schedule page to set an access schedule. Everything looks reasonable but we can all still access FB. What am I missing? I think I found all the IPs for FB, maybe not? Not truly clear if the schedule is for times to block or times to access.
