Cable Modem That Supports VOIP?
Feb 5, 2012
If one has internet and phone service through Cable, I know you can buy your own modems and routers, but is there a particular kind of modem you'd need to get to support VOIP for the phone?
A friend of mine has phone through Cable and her internet and phone suddenly stopped working, although her TV service is fine. We are thinking that maybe the cable company's modem is bad, so she wants to buy her own modem, but we're not sure if it needs to be a particular type of modem. I've looked around for her, but haven't found anything in modem specs stating they support VOIP. Does it matter? Or can you buy any cable modem?
We already looked at the cable providers website to see their supported modems, but they are all the same brand as the one she has that doesn't work. She already has a wireless router, which she will plug into the modem she buys, so we're only looking for answers regaring a modem.

My cable provider has installed a separate RCA DHG536 modem for my VoIP phone service alongside my SB5120 modem, and charges me $7 a month modem rental. I am upgrading the SB5120 to a DOC 3.0 modem and wonder if I can abandon the DHG536 modem?

Life was great with my DIR-615 and Motorola Surf Board SB-5100 cable modem, but my D-Link refuses to recognize the Internet signal from the Thomson. The Comcast guy spent an hour trying to get it to work, but I'm stuck watching MLB.tv on a 24" monitor in a stiff office chair in my study, instead of on a 47" LCD in my living room. How can I force the DIR-615 to accept the Thomson ACG905? If you advise me to check settings or manually change them, please do not "assume" that I know how to access those settings.

I purchased Linksys WAG160N (from a store) and I also have 7 Linksys SPA962 VOIP phones provided by MyNetPhone with service included. All tests we found out that this modem doesn't work with this VOIP phones. Somehow probably doesn't give access to MyNetPhone servers to get connection with this phones.I purchased an other one from DLINK and works perfect?

I can't get a new IP from my ISP when my Cable modem router(EPC3925) is set to router mode, i have tried factory restore, unplugged etc..but still no luck. It changes each time i reset it when i set it to bridged only mode but then i won't be able to connect other devices to it since it doesn't uses DHCP in bridged only mode. It changes back to the IP i had when i set it to router mode. I don't want to change my router settings to bridged only because it would disconnect the other devices in my house. Why my ISP assigns the same IP address when it's set to router mode but assigns different IPs when it's set to bridged only, how is this possible ?

some reference material about configuring my WAG320N to use my cable modem via Ethernet port 1. I've seen it mentioned that's its possible, however I've been unable to sort it out myself.
And before you ask, I've brought the DSL router as I'm moving in the next 12 months and my new base will not have access to cable internet and I'll be reverting back to DSL.

I'm switching to cable internet service instead of DSL. My Netgear router will not work with my cable modem; but it works like a charm with my DSL modem. Is it a problem with the router setup? Good thing I still have the DSL service.

I am used to seeing a 192.168.x.x address but on his I get a 10,x,x,x number.

Anyway, my PC kills my modem in record time every time, but the cable modem is fine with my PS3.Within a few minutes of hooking up the PC the connection dies and must be rebooted to work again on anything (even the PS3). During this time the network shows as unidentified and won't even give access to its status page (192.168.100.1).The PS3 doesn't ever induce this state.I have tinkered with settings, drivers, and even clean installs. The modem has no settings I can alter. PC is WIN 7 and the modem is an advanced DOSCIS 3.0 Linksys/Cisco. ISP is Comcast.

I was wondering is it OK if I leave on my cable modem constantly? I have it plugged in to a surge protector as well as other things including my laptops accessories as well. I work from home so I need to be protected, anyway I read from one source that you should keep the cable modem on as it is too much of a hassle to turn it off and then turn it on as the network could get delayed for a couple minutes or something? Also I read as well though that you should turn off the cable modem once a month or something to clear out memory? Is that correct? I leave my computer laptop on all the time with an exception of one day a week. I turn it off for 8 hours supposedly I read it is good for cleaning out memory etc.

I am using a cable company called Cox.net for the internet. The cable modem is Motorola brand.Sometimes, the modem got disconnected due to outage in my area. But after Cox fixed the outage, I have to reset the modem. The problem is I do not know when the outage is fixed. Sometimes, I reset the modem and call cox all day long. Is there a modem which can reset itself after there is the internet signal? The second question is my desktop pc, which connected to the wireless router through a cable, sometimes displays a error page in IE8 (Internet Explorer). At the same time, the laptops using wireless can view IE8 pages.I think what happened is there is a internet signal outage in my house but the laptops got re-connected to the internet automatically and the desktop did not re-connect. Sometimes, I can ping a website on the desktop but I cannot see the pages in IE. Re-open IE does not fix the problem. The solution is to re-boot the pc. Is there a network card or software I can use to re-connect to the web after the internet signal becomes available? My pc's mother board has the network device to plug in the cable. The brand is Gigabyte.

I have a pc running windows 7 connected to a broadband modem. From that modem I have a LAN cable running to another building plugging into a wifi router. I have 2 pcs running xp plugged into this wifi router. (they can see each other)Is it possible for the 3 pcs to see each other on the network? The only way I got it to work was if all pcs were connected to the same modem. However to save running super long cables for each pc I want to run just one between the modems and then plug all pcs into that wifi modem which is close to everything.

The network card in my PC supports 1Gbit ethernet, my 2TB NAS also supports 1Gbit ethernet, however both of these are currently run through a 100Mbit cable modem/router thus reducing the connection speed. I was wondering if I purchased a 1Gbit switch and connected all my devices directly into that, then connected it into the cable modem, would the PC communicate with the NAS directly via the switch or would it go through the cable modem?

We are a small office currently running a regular network (9 wired, 2 wireless) and also using the "guest" feature (7 wireless) on a Linksys E2000. We have a switch to connect our wired equipment to the E2000. If "A" is our regular network, and "B" is our guest network, is it possible to have 2 routers on 1 cable modem and still prevent network "A" from seeing Network "B" and vice versa?? We are looking to do this because we will soon be exceeding the maximum guest users (10) allowed by the E2000. We have another Linksys router in storage, I think it is a WRT54G, that we would use if this is possible.

My network currently consists of one cable modem, and one linksys router.i was given a Belkin N router as a gift, and instead of returning it for a different brand ive decided to keep it. i would like to essentially use a splitter or switch in between my current router and modem. This is the plan. Keep modem and linksys router in the den, use a splitter or switch to split the signal from the modem to each router. Use a 50+ foot ethernet cord running from the splitter or switch through the attic and into another room.

Ambit U10C018 send light not working. All other lights indicate proper functions. Usb not in use or connected. Enet, power, ready, receiving and sync all appear to be working properly. Have rebooted both modem and computer countless times, replaced Ethernet card (DFE-530TX+(Rev f), checked cables, all appear normal. Suddenlink service, cable guy didn't locate problem (didn't try very hard either).
