Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 Multi Subnet / Vlan Routing?

May 4, 2011

I'm new to Cisco equipment much more familiar w/ Sonicwall w/ that said......I have a 5505 w/ Security Plus licensing

I have set up multiple VLANs as follows

VLAN 1 inside - still setup as 192.168.1.1 (will not be using this for our lan)
VLAN2 - outside
VLAN100 - LAN 10.1.1.1/24

[Code]....

If I do add all the VLANs above I understand I will probably have to make a trunk port since I only have 5 usable interfaces

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 3750 Multi-cast VLAN Routing

Oct 28, 2012

I have a network with several catalyst 2960 switches and one catalyst 3750. I have created two VLAN and set up the proper routing and everything is working fine there. I have a client/server application that used multicast in the initial start up for the client to determine available servers, the issue is one of my clients is on a different VLAN then the server. I am able to route the multicast using MVR as long as both the server and the client are plugged into the 3750 by creating a static route, making the server a source port and the client a receive port. Unfortunately I need the client and the server plugged in to different 2960s. My question is how do I establish multicast routing between the two and perferably do it dynamically (always route multicast traffic from one VLAN to another).

Cisco Firewall :: Inter VLAN-Routing ASA 5505?

Jul 8, 2012

Ive been readin all over the internet (including this site) trying to figure out if the asa can handle intervlan routing. Im not sure what I am missing on my config to get this to work.  Ive read that it can work and Ive read that it cant work. How to get this to work on my asa 5505.

Here is my setup

Cable Modem ---> ASA (eth0/0)
(eth0/2) -->unmanaged switch for LAN connectivity
(eth0/3) --> Access point for wireless LAN connectivty

My config is attached

What I would like to do is be able to communicate between vlan3(LAN) and vlan4(Wireless LAN)

Whats strange is I can RDP between the two vlans but I cant ping or anything else.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 - Cannot Ping Any Of Subnet IPs

Sep 7, 2011

We want to use an ASA as a pure routing device. Our network has several internal subnets (10.1.x.0/24), and we want to be able to reach them from outside and to allow access between them.

We have a defined a VLAN for each subnet range with the same security-level, added it to an Ethernet port and made the Ethernet that acts as outside as a trunk, and defined it as the global routing.

We cannot ping any of the subnet IPs defined in the ASA from outside nor we can ping it from the internal IP addresses.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 Cannot Ping From One Subnet To Another?

Aug 4, 2012

I have been tasked with replacing our company eSoft router with a Cisco ASA 5505 with the upgraded security license.   I have been working on the configuration for a couple of weeks now, after reading hundreds of forum posts, watching youtube videos, and endless google searching, and despite my best efforts I am still having an issue I can’t figure out.

I have a couple of subnets, that when the ASA is connected, I cannot ping, nor can they get to the internet or our Exchange server. At this point I’m not sure if it’s an access rule issue, NAT issue, or DNS issue.

Here is the network layout:

ASA: 192.168.0.2 (Primary Gateway)
192.168.0.0 (Primary facility, ASA is the gateway)
192.168.2.0 (Second facility, connected via Verizon point-to-point)
192.168.3.0 (Third facility, connected via Verizon point-to-point)

Cisco Firewall :: Adding Second Subnet On ASA 5505 With Security Plus License

Jan 31, 2012

We recently upgraded a ASA 5505 with the security plus license to allow us to add a second subnet, but are having a few problems configuring the second subnet.  The original subnet we have configured 10.1.1.0 is able to access the internet without any problems.  However the new subnet 10.1.5.0 is unable to access the internet and when we ran a trace packet the nat config nat (inside) 1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 is showing as the rule that drops the packet.

Additionally we have not been able to get the 2 subnets to talk to each other even though same-security-traffic permit inter-interface is configured.  How to configure the subnet 10.1.5.0 to access the internet or to get the subnets to communicate.  Below is a streamlined version of our current config.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5505 Running Out Of Available IP Addresses On Subnet

Oct 7, 2012

I have a customer who has an ASA 5505 that is handling the routing for their internal network. They are running out of available IP addresses on their subnet 192.168.1.0/24. They have dumb switches that don't suppport multiple vlans or trunking & they are only able to connect to one switchport on the ASA. He doesn't not want to purchase any new equipment or rearrange their existing equipment at this time. The customer would like to statically assign IP addesses for 192.168.1.x & 192.168.2.x and have the ASA hand out DHCP addresses for 192.168.3.x addresses. The customer suggested configuring a super subnet. A 192.168.0.0/22 address scheme would provide an ip range 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.3.255 on a single VLAN. I know this is an unconventional way to setup an internal network & I will definitely advise the customer that this should only be considered as a temporary solution until they get more appropriate network equipment.

The default configuration shows the eth0 with no access vlan and interface eth1 with access vlan 2... does it mean the eth0 is in vlan1 ? (Nativ Vlan ) ???

Vlans:As can be seen, each vlan is using its own ports and dhcp rule, so, now they should be separate.

Both Wans are connected: So now (at least as i see things) the two vlans are separate and using different Wan. But the reality is different, everything is going out using Wan1.Also in the Interface Info you can see that the 2 vlans are listed under the Wan1.

The rest of router setting are default.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 Expanding A DMZ With VLAN

Jan 30, 2012

On our ASA 5505 We have a DMZ configured to use 2 ports, which are used by the mail and Web servers. So far everything works perfectly and this router has been very stable. Now I need to add more ports in order to accomodate prototype Web servers in the DMZ, but no more ports available on the Cisco. Looking through the ASDM though I noticed the DMZ seems to be configured as "VLAN 5", sure enough with VLAN ID 5. So I tried creating a VLAN with ID 5 in my ProCurve switch, isolated from other VLANs. My theory being that plugging on of the the router's DMZ interfaced onto this VLAN would allow me to add my test servers. Well, this seems to work, but for only a very short time. I can get the landing page from my test server to display, and then everything slows down to a crawl and communication seems to be blocked. Out of curiosity, I tried to put my prod server and email server on the VLAN, together and separately, but the same thing happens. At first, I can ping the machines, then after a few request, everything stops responding.

Cisco Firewall :: VLAN Traffic On ASA 5505?

Aug 15, 2011

I have a Cisco ASA 5505 that I have configured.  The outside interface is vlan 2 and the inside interface is vlan 1.  Port 0 of the ASA is configured to be in vlan 2 and is connected to the ISP provided subnet.  Port 1 is connected to my private LAN subnet.  I have an additional router connected to Port 2 for guest connectivity.  Port 2 is configured to be a member of VLAN 2 so that it can access the ISP provided subnet.  From the device connected to port 2 I can ping the vlan 2 interface address of the ASA and from the ASA I can ping the Default gateway of the ISP provided subnet.  For some reason the router on port 2 cannot ping the default gateway of the ISP provided subnet.  If the vlan were working the same as a vlan in a switch, I would expect to be able to do this. why it is not working or what I can do to get it working?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 With Base License That Uses 3 VLAN

Jul 17, 2012

I am working on ASA 5505 with Base License that uses 3 VLAN's.

-My VLAN 1 is for used for my home network.
-VLAN 2 is connected to the public Internet and my IP gets assigned by ISP dynamically.
-VLAN 3 is DMZ where I will have few VM's that would need access to and from the Internet.

I am looking to work with following:

1) 172.16.0.2 that sits on DMZ will need to access public Internet over port 80
2) Permit access from the Internet over port 3389 to 172.16.0.2
3) Permit any host on private VLAN (192.168.0.0 network) to access 172.16.0.2 over the port 3389
4) Permit second VM on the DMZ VLAN let say 172.16.0.3 to access public Internet on all ports. Access in to this host is not permitted.
5) For some reason DHCP hosts are NOT getting DNS (8.8.8.8) entry when IP hets assigned or renew. I have a statements below but it is not working.

Also, if ACL rules for VoIP are written correctly. The goal is to permit these ports (SIP related) to access VoIP router. [code]

VLAN Voice             subnet 10.0.0.x/24

Site B:
ASA5505 Base license
VLAN data               subnet 192.168.10.x/24
VLAN Voice (restr)    subnet 10.0.1.0/24

The callmanager is located on site A and needs to sent out DHCP-offers to site B through the VPN so the IP-phones can register to the callmanager. I got the VPN up and running for the data-subnet but i can't get traffic through the voice-subnet/VLAN.

Can the ASA's do the job or do I need to route traffic before the ASA's on both sides and sent it through the tunnel, configured both subnets as interesting traffic? Ofcourse the last situation I need to upgrade the license for the 5505 to gain more VLAN's.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 / Multiple Interfaces In Outside VLAN?

Feb 12, 2013

This is for an ASA 5505 with the base license...I have a situation where I will not have one interface in my outside VLAN, but instead I want to have interfaces 1-7 in my outside VLAN and interface0/0 in my inside VLAN.

Is this supported with the Base license, and if so how would I do this?  Do I still just need to assign one IP address to the outside VLAN?

Or will I need to upgrade to the Security Plus license and put each interface in a separate outside VLAN, so in essence I would have 7 outside VLANs each with the same security level (0)?

My situation is that I have several partner networks that i want to "aggregate" thru my one ASA 5505.  So each outside interface represents a separate partner (outside) network, each of which I want to get to from my inside network.  Hence the many outside to one inside.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 VLAN Assigned To Outside For Internet Access

ASA 5505 and DMZ and Base License,"For example, you have one VLAN assigned to the outside for Internet access, one VLAN assigned to an inside business network, and a third VLAN assigned to your home network. The home network does not need to access the business network, so you can use the no forward interface command on the home VLAN; the business network can access the home network, but the home network cannot access the business network." This is exactly what I need. Mail server in DMZ, full access from internet to DMZ, and from inside network to DMZ, no access from DZM to inside network. If I good understand, this is possible with base license.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 8.4.3 Class C IP Addressing / Routing Subnet Design

Sep 25, 2012

I am carving up an internet Class C for customer. This class C is used by 3 distinct QA, Corporate and Production firewalls. I want to carve up IP space so there is a /26 for each environment. The issue I have is the firewalls may need communication with each other via the public IP space. Currently I don’t have any L3 switches in between the firewalls and the edge internet router. So with subnetting, it would seem I need to push everything through the internet router for the intra-firewall communication.I would rather not push this traffic through the edge router, so I came up with an idea to allocate all firewall outside interface IP’s in the 4th (last remaining) /26. That way, I can allow firewalls to communicate over the primary interface IP’s, which will all be in the same subnet – without going through a routing “engine”/device.

For the actual environment subnets (NAT's on respective firewalls), I create a static route on the edge router pointing to each of the firewall’s primary IP’s for the respective environment routes (the first 3 - /26’s).This is still a beta design, but I have done this before on small scale when ISP gave me 2 subnets for example, assuming I was going to put a router in between the customer firewall and ISP. I would use the “routed subnet” on the ASA interface, and then pull the NAT’s from the other subnet. The ISP would have to add a static route directing the NAT subnet to the “routed subnet” correct IP - which would be the firewall outside interface primary IP.I recently found out that with ASA OS 8.4.3 and up, ASA will not proxy arp for IP’s not in its local interface subnet. This means the ISP/router will have to assign static ARP entries on the edge router. This can get messy after the first few NAT entries. So I am debating the design now. I think this kind of stuff going forward won’t be worthwhile with newer ASA 8.4.3 code.

How to communicate between different ASA’s, while still carving up the Class C into usable smaller subnets? The primary reason for doing this in the first place is to support routing on the edge router. I am thinking it might be time to ask for another Class C to do the routing functions, and keep the firewalls all at Layer 2 in one /24 - Class C?

Multiple Vlan / Subnet Network

Apr 4, 2011

I am designing a network right now that is going to have 356 devices. I need to use vlan separation with subnetting for a number of reasons. The first (and most obvious) is that there are 356 devices that will require an IP. Too many for one subnet. The second is that a good portion of the devices that I am using are a litlle to chatty with the broadcast traffic for my comfort. I have two subnets that are going to be specifically alocated to these chatty devices. Our switches are being provided for us by the client for unknown reasons. They are providing us with HP ProCurve E2810 switches which are layer2 switches.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5585 / Identity Firewall With Single Forest / Multi-Domain

Dec 28, 2011

I have a question with regard to setting up the ID firewall on the ASA 5585 in a single forest, multiple domain windows network.Currently I have a semi-operational IDF at the top level but can't find users on the lower other domains, here is the setup:I have 3 domains.

[URL]

Both domains have a two way parent-child trust and I can look for users in AD Users/Computer on both domains.  I initially setup the ASA to look at domain1.test.com using an LDAP aaa-server per the IDF instructions, and then proceeded to configure the ad-agent.  I installed the adagent on the domain1.test.com domain controller configured the settings on that system and had no problem adding users to the firewall and getting functionality within domain1.  I looked to see if I could see domain 2 and domain 3 users and found none.  I went ahead and added the domain2 system to the adagent on the DC and the system says that it is up, but when I search for users is not pulling them from domain2.  Instead, it shows domain1 users as domain2user1.  I also configured another adserver in the ASA to search ldap on domain 2 to no avail. The cisco documentation states the following:•Before you configure even a single domain controller machine using the adacfg dc create command, ensure that the AD Agent machine is first joined to a domain (for example, domain J) that has a trust relationship with each and every domain (for example, domain D[i]) that it will monitor for user authentications (through the domain controller machines that you will be configuring on the AD Agent machine). Single Forest, Multiple Domains—All the domains in a single forest already have an inherent two-way trust relationship with each other. Thus, the AD Agent must first be joined to one of the domains, J, in this forest, with this domain J not necessarily being identical to any of the domains D[i] corresponding to the domain controller machines. Because of the inherent trust relationship between domain J and each of the domains D[i], there is no need to explicitly configure any trust relationships.Reading that it sounds like it should just work.  I had everything properly configured before I installed the adagent, but I'm guessing that there is a chance that you can't have the adagent on the top level DC and get to communicate with the lower level domains.
