Cisco Infrastructure :: 2960S-48FPD - ROMmon Not Responding To Keystrokes?
May 23, 2013
I have a Cisco 2960S-48FPD that someone was trying to do an upgrade, loaded c2960-lanbasek9-mz.150-2.SE2.bin instead of c2960-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE2.bin. To try and fix it they deleted both but before they could put the proper ios on, another person dropped power. Now the switch will boot into rommon, HOWEVER it won't respond to any keystrokes. It's stuck at "..... flash_init boot " and the switch: prompt. I have tried using both putty and SecureCRT, the settings are correct, the usb-serial works on another c2960S. I can read the output when it goes into rommon so it's not a baud rate issue.
We were unable to login to a 3825 with a known good password, so we used Cisco's Password Recovery Procedure for that device. We were successful in resetting the password, and had access to the CLI. However, when we logged out of the router, then attempted to log back in, the 'Invalid Password' prompt again came up.We have to use password recovery each and every time we need to access the CLI. Might this be an NVRAM problem?
Show version for this device is: C3825-advsecurityk9-m 12.4(3a).
We are upgrading a customer network and have found that users of a particular application [which is very bursty/bandwidth hungry] have experienced a marked performance drop. I see lots of output drops on the interfaces. This is only happening on 2960S-48 the rest of the users on 2960PSTL [all PoE] are not having nearly as bad a time.I have tried various QoS configs with little success. I have seen on some other blogs that the 2960S has less buffers than the rest of the family.
Removing QoS or upping the users to 1Gb cures the performance problem.
I have several 2960s and 3750s and two 6506 (ws-cac-3000w) recently move to new location The power outlet is the same ,but Volt is different current 2960/3750 use this(one phase 3 wire) 220v and new location change to (from 3 phase 4 wire -> one phase 220v)6506 current using(one phase 3 wire) and will be change to (from 3 phase 4 wire -> one phase 220v)
I had search doc about power supply /cable , only show support single phase 220 v ,but not description vlot between each wire !!Does new location power outlet suit for 2960/3750s power and 6500 ws-cac-3000w ?!? Do I need chane power outlet back to current using?
How many Switches can be stacked with WS-C2960S-48FPD-L at a max..
As per my Knowledge it is 4 and as below..
Switch 1 to Switch 2 Switch 2 to Switch 3 Switch 3 to Switch 4 Switch 4 to Switch 1
If yes then, is it mandatory to do the "Switch 4 to Switch 1" stack. why am I asking this is because this stack requires a long cable and the cable which comes with the Switch is only 0.5M.
I cleared the flash (disk0) on my ASA and now I'm unable to restore it with an IOS.
When I attempt to load it with an IOS, it appears to load just fine. It even proceeds to restart, but when it boots back up it displays the error "No images in / Error 15: File not found. unable to boot an image" and goes to ROMMON.
My computer's IP is 10.0.0.1. I'm assigning the ASA 10.0.0.254. The image filename is asa724-k8.bin. Here's the output of the environmental variables and the attempted loading of the IOS:
I'm having problem on my 1841 it won't boot. No response on console but the led lights seems to be normal.I tried removing the CF then turn it on again to see if the router will go to rommon but didn't happen. I did try using another pc thinking the com1 is faulty but still no response on console nor rommon not showing up.
ASR 1004, has a image, which is on the harddrive, not bootflash and we have no boot commands in the configuration…We are running the ROMMON version ‘15_01rs’ The ASR boots into Rommon, as it cannot find a image (as expected), as the configuration has no boot commands.Trying to TFTP or getting an IOS back into bootflash is proving problematic.Follow all TFTP commands..
I'm having a little trouble with a router I have got my hands on to practice for my CCNA.Im connected via serial>USB adapter and via XP HT on Win7. Router boots and I then break the boot sequence with ctrl-break. But then it does not go into ROMMON mode. It simply says this:
-System Bootstrap, Version 5.2(8a), RELEASE SOFTWARE -Copyright (c) 1986-1995 by cisco Systems -2500 processor with 2048 Kbytes of main memory
How I get it into ROMMON to reset the password on it.
I think that my rommon image has become corrupt as it will not take a new IOS image. I have tried several images that are within the recommended size and work with another 2620 with exactly the same specification also some commands that are available are not recognised when typed
This question is about a Cisco 871, which has no bootable image in flash. The device is currently in rommon, and i am attempting to copy the correct .bin file over from usbflash0: but recieve the following error:unable to stat usbflash0:/: permission denied ?i get the same error if i try to boot from usb, or even try to view the directory.Config register is currently set to 0x2102? Typically in this scenario, i just boot from usb, and copy everything over in enable mode, but the lack of permission on this particular router has me stumped.
I'm trying to upgrade the ASR 1002 we just purchased and am having some issues (this is a new device and is not in service). I first tried upgrading the ROMMON using the upgrade rom-monitor filename bootflash:asr1000-rommon.150-1r.S.pkg all command, but the upgrade didn't seem to work completely. When I do a sh platform I get the below output showing 15.0(1r)S: [code]
no valid BOOT image foundFinal autoboot attempt from default boot device...Rommon upgrade requestedMaximum upgrade attempts exceeded, continuing with old Rommon...
I've also tried upgrading the IOS, but that is not working either. I tried "boot system flash:asr1000rp1-advipservicesk9.03.02.00.S.151-1.S.bin" command, but that did not work. I made sure the image was good using the "verify" command and made sure to set "config-register 0x2102". After I do a wr me and reload the router I get the below errors. [code]
Im trying to get into Rommon, Im reading thats the BREAK button, which im assuming obviously its the pause/break button on my keyboard, im pressing it till my finger turns blue a billion times and still no rommon noodles for me.
When my ASA5505 starts it loads into rommon. I enter "boot" and everything boots fine. How do I make that load by default whenever it starts. Any correct command syntax to make that happen ?
I do not have a cross over cable and have to use xmodem. I set the baud rate to 115200 and I can see everything fine. Using Tera Term when you send the file via xmodem it freezes and closes on packet #3 or about 384 bits. When simply clicking the send file button you get the error-
Not sure what to do from here. I have tried everything.Error you get when you boot the router:
System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(1r)XE1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) TAC Support: [URL] Copyright (c) 2001 by cisco Systems, Inc. C1700 platform with 32768 Kbytes of main memory loadprog: bad file magic number: 0x0 boot: cannot load "flash:"
I have a Cat6506. There were 2 Sup 720 in it for redundancy. They told me they had problems with this thing in the past needing to go out and reboot the machine. I need to go out periodically because it goes into ROMMON. I type boot and it comes back up. One time though neither one would reboot. I had to take a third one out there and reconfigure it. Now it is starting to do the same thing. One thing I did notice is they never connected it to an UPS. It is plugged strait into the wall with power going to two outlets. I am beginning to think there are spikes in the power occurring and this is sending it into ROMMON.
we have 55 of the 1841 routers here, and one of them always boots to ROMMON from a very cold (down 1 hour or more) start. The image on all 55 is c1841-ipbasek9-mz.124-24.T4.bin. 32 MB Cisco brand flash. Here's what's been done thus far:In ROMMON changed to 0x2102. Then 'reset' and the image boots fine. Change config-reg to 0x2102. Save config. Reload and image boots fine again. Wait an hour or more and boots to ROMMON.Boot from ROMMON to USBflash0: Format the CF then copy over the bin file. Change to 0x2102 and save. Reload and image boots fine again. Wait an hour or more and boots to ROMMON.Swapped CF with another unit. Again, works fine to reload, but shut down and restart an hour or more later and boots to ROMMON. Format this CF and copy over image while on router. Image boots fine. Wait an hour or more and boots to ROMMON.In each case of very cold start the configuration register has reverted to 0x0 {why it boots to ROMMON}Tried dx mode with 0x8001. Nothing seen that is unusual to me, but I'm not an expert by any means. It doesn't seem to a CF card problem, but could be a connection to the CF card and then something behind that.
Here is the output of diagnostic boot mode:
Cisco 1841 (revision 7.0) with 116736K/14336K bytes of memory. Processor board ID FTX1231W0JA 2 FastEthernet interfaces 2 Low-speed serial(sync/async) interfaces DRAM configuration is 64 bits wide with parity disabled. 191K bytes of NVRAM.
I have recently bought a used 2600XM, I was trying to boot it, I get some errors and end up being the ROMMON mode:
ystem Bootstrap, Version 12.2(8r) [cmong 8r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) Copyright (c) 2003 by cisco Systems, Inc. C2600 platform with 262144 Kbytes of main memory getdirent: bad file magic number, possibly out of sync boot: cannot determine first file name on device "flash:"
On new 1841 Testing Router, I deleted the flash & did the reload. After reloading, instantly I entered into the Rommon mode. I have a backup of the flash in my TFTP Server, which is connected to the 1841 Router. how can I restore my flash file into my 1841 Router. I can not get myself out of Rommon mode. I also now even can not ping the TFTP Server as well. Do I have to configure in the Rommon mode ?
how to restore the flash image via TFTP Server on my 1841 Router.
I have a customer that has an air-lap1142. He says that it boot to Rommon, and he has to issue the boot command to get it to boot. What is the rommon command to have the ap boot to the image automatically?
I would like to upgrade rommon on my Cisco 2801 but this is what I get: [code]The router stops here and I am forced to power off and on again and the upgrade does not succeed.
I am trying to configure a 1941, but the router boots into readonly rommon . after configuring the router and copy running config to startup config, on reboot, none of the changes are saved, and boots back into readonly rommon
I have a lightweight AP that boots into RoMmon, if i hold the reset button in for 10 seconds or so it will boot into the IOS and download the config from the controller but never registers. then once i reboot it it goes back to Romon unless i hold in the button again.
Cisco router 3945 when unpacked from the box and powered on , it was not able to find boot loader image and booted in ROMMON mode. tried to boot from the external flash and tftp but still not able to.
We replaced router chassis 2 times and both the times faced the same problem.
I upgraded four 3560E, 12.2(44) to 12.2(55)SEThree 3560 works fine, the last one stops after 17-18 seconds with a solid green LED. I cant get into ROMmon, the switch doesn't boot up. its like "dead but still alive"
My TS: 1: Removed all SFPs. 2: Reset PSU and fan modules. 3: Replace PSU and fan modules. 4: Try to get into ROMmon.(pushing mode button and break seq.) Startup LED:0-1 seconds: SYST: Amber RPS: Amber STAT: Green DUPLEX: Green SPEED: Green 1-17 seconds SYST: Blinking Green RPS: OFF STAT: OFF DUPLEX: OFF SPEED: OFF 18 s--> (only testet up to one hour) SYST: Solid Green RPS: OFF STAT: OFF DUPLEX: OFF SPEED: OFF
A working 3560EStartup LED information. If I compare a working switch with the faulty switch I can see about 18 seconds into bootingSYST change very fast from green to amber and continues with booting, this doesnt happened on the faulty switch (solid green 18 seconds). Pushing MODE button, doesn't get me in to ROMmon, this works for all the other switches. On a normal 3560 it takes around 40 seconds before I get in to ROMmon. With this faulty switch it stops after 18 seconds(solid green) and it doesnt respond.
I have a rare case. switch 6500 make crash and go to rommon. when review the crash appear that the switch charge the configuration from nvram, but, at the ending there are a few line command, that make the switch go to crash.. then I have to booting from rommon and start again. I use the version 12.2.33.sxi9 and 12.2.sxi3 and the configregister is 0x2102
I think that the switch get the startup-config file from other file-system. *Sep 1 03:42:42.352 Inviern: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from memory by console access-list 199 permit icmp host 10.10.10.10 host 20.20.20.20 crypto map NiStTeSt1 10 ipsec-manual match address 199 set peer 20.20.20.20 exit no access-list 199 no crypto map NiStTeSt1

I upgrade to a Flash 32mbs memory stick, as I reboot the 2600 Cisco router, it appear in the ROMMON mode, nonetheless, I followed some wrong procedure by changing components on the ROMMON command line. however now the router reboot or start with symbol only V2V2v2a, and I can no longer enter the ROMMON Mode or key anything in. I have a copy of the IOS on my TFTP server.
Could not find a valid file in BOOT environment variable. BOOT variable can be set from IOS. To find currently setRom Monitor variables, type 'set' command.
Choosing a boot method, type 'confreg' command.rommon 1
