Cisco :: Serialization Delay From The Wire / Interface Onto Router / Switch Backplane / Fabric?

Feb 28, 2013

So the delay is introduced getting data onto the wire. However say there are two hops to the destination server, each hop is via equal connectivity speeds say 1G interlinks.

Question:

Is there serialization delay FROM the wire/interface onto router/switch backplane/fabric?

Is the serialization delay from backplace/nic back onto the wire to the next hop? - Or if using a switch with equal in/output speed transmitted without serialization?

What happens with a routed interface vs switched?

Most articles discuss the latency induced between the much higher OS/NIC interface out to the wire, but not the switch/router serialization that does or doesn't occur.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750 Switch - ICMP Delay To Default Gateway

Aug 25, 2012

I had setup a lan infrastructure with 5 3750 stack swithes. In these 3 of them are in one stack which is acting as access switch, 2 of them in another stack which is as core switch where all the SVI is configured. Now, when i tried to ping from our edge pc which is connected in access switch to default gaeway, which is configured in core switch, the ICMP is getting delayed . But when try to ping from the same edge pc to another user PC, it is getting less tahn 1 millisecond icmp replies.

why icmp is delaying to default gateway , but working with another edge to edge pcs without any delays?

Linksys 3200 - Router Delay / Lag During Gaming?

Jul 4, 2011

I noted that my router (Linksys3200) has delays or lag on the average of 5 to 10 seconds apart, but random, while playing on line games. While continuously monitoring delays (ping) with a program called Ping Plotter, it ranges from 25ms to 65ms. When not gaming, just surfing the net, the ping is zero and once in a great while a 5ms or 6ms spike may occur.

Am I looking at a malfunction in the router or the computer? or Is this normal?

Cisco WAN :: 6500 / 3560 - Understanding Backplane / Throughput And Capacity

Jan 16, 2012

I have been trying to understand from a long time about the throughput capacities of variety of Cisco Routers and Switches. Have searched over a million pages on cisco.com for data sheets/documents/etc. but havent succesfully got a single document highlighting all of what i need.

I have got queries on the below issues:Which model of Router can support upto 2Gig's of WAN Internet connection running BGP? Any list of routers and switches supporting variety of throughput's from 1 MB to 1 GB.I have heard some experts stating "Switches don't have throughput concerns as they switch the traffic and don't need to route traffic" How true is the statement?? and if it is, Why do we require 6500's instead of 3560 Distribution Switches.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Weird Random Delay Accessing Websites With E4200?

Jul 25, 2012

I just got an e4200 refurbed router, and it's been working great except for one problem I'm having. I have Comcast cable with Ubee D3.0 modem. For some reason, there will be a random 4-8 second delay when going to certain websites. While this normally wouldn't be a problem, it occurs quite frequently with Google.com and we definitely can't have that. I've updated to latest firmware. Ran ping test to find optimal MTU, went with 1500. To be sure it isn't a DNS issue, tried accessing Google by IP addy and getting the same delay. The delay seems to occasionally occur with Facebook as well, at one point I couldn't even get to Facebook and had to release/renew ipconfig. I have Mac address cloned if that makes a difference.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: High Fabric Utilization On 3560-e

Nov 2, 2010

I am looking at the utilization on a Catalyst 3560-E.  I am running a test with eight 1 GIGE links RXing at 95 % utilization.  All of the traffic is going to a TenGigE port.  The device on the TenGigE port is echoing back all of the traffic received, so the 1 GIG links are TXing at 95% as well. When I do a "show controllers utilization", the port utilization numbers are correct, but the fabric utilization is higher than I would expect.  The fabric should be 128 gigbits / second in this switch, and there is 7.6 gigabits TX/RX to the ten gig port.  The fabric utilization is at 49%.  I would expect 7.6 / 128 = 5.9% or possible double that. [code]

2 Wire Router Randomly Disconnects

May 9, 2011

i am a gamer and i rely on the internet to do some buisiness as well, a few months ago my router started randomly dropping me from my connection and then 10 seconds later the connection is back up. now i know alot about computers and cant figure out why this is happening. it seems that the problem starts with skype. when i play some games while in skype(we use it as a communication device for the games) i will get dropped from skype and from my game, then skype reconects and i can reconect to the game but 5 minutes later it happens again. i have at&t and am using a 2701HG-B, my donwload speed is a max of 3mbps and usualy is around 2.7mbps. i have contacted at&t multiple times, i have reset my router multiple times but it hasnt fixed the problem. at&t stated that i am demanding too much bandwith from my connection. i feel that this info totally crap. when im on with just 1 of my many devices at 3am and all i am doing is playing a game and talking on skype and it disconnects, there is no way i am demanding too much.

Extending Router Antenna With Wire?

Jan 31, 2012

My housemates have been having a trouble with network coverage in my house, the router is located in the basement of my house, perfect for me as my room is also down there (Ethernet). Unfortunately my housemate in the attic room's signal seems to be a problem. I'm wondering if it would be possible to remove one of my routers two antennas solder some copper wire to the spot it was removed, then have the wire go up to the 1st floor and re-solder the antenna up there (mount it on the wall or something). I'm confident with the practicalities of actually doing this, but I'm not that techie when it comes to electronics. I'm not sure whether it would need more power to boost it over such a distance.

Modem / Router Weird Views For 2 Wire

May 11, 2011

I've had a 2Wire gateway that I got from AT&T for about 5 years. Although I've seen terrible reviews for 2Wire, I've had pretty good luck with this one. Now the Power light is a steady red and only light on. Tech support says that it's most likely the power adapter. As I understand, most what are called modems or routers today are a combination of these two, is that right? I see them in stores ranging from $30 to $200 or more, and they all say they do the same thing - almost identical wording. If it turns out that my adapter is good, what should I be looking for?

I have looked up and down cisco's and google web for steps, but they are all coming back with the answer to just disconnect the power cables after you have power down all the windows os and exs servers. Before i do that, I just wanted to make sure that that's the correct way to do it or if there are actual commands that I will need to run on the devices to properly power down. Cisco Switching/Routing :: Changing 4510-SUP-6E Redundant Mode To Share-Backplane Mode

Mar 12, 2013

I received the following info from Cisco's TAC and wanted to inquire further before I start reconfiguring the switch:

In a redundant Sup-6E setup, the following configuration is supported :

- 1 TenGig uplink on Active Sup and 1 TenGig uplink on Standby Sup
- 1 TenGig uplink on Active Sup and 2 Gig uplinks on Standby Sup
- 2 Gig uplinks on Active Sup and 1 TenGig uplink on Standby Sup
- 2 Gig uplink on Active Sup and 2 Gig uplinks on Standby Sup

If you invoke shared backplane mode, the following configuration can also be supported:

- 2 TenGig uplinks(blocking) on Active Sup and 2 TenGig uplinks on Standby Sup
- 2 TenGig uplink(blocking) on Active Sup and 4 Gig uplinks on Standby Sup
- 4 Gig uplinks on Active Sup and 2 TenGig uplinks(blocking) on Standby Sup
- 4 Gig uplink on Active Sup and 4 Gig uplinks on Standby Sup

Here's the command and information about the "shared-backplane" mode :- [URL]

Currently, we have 2  SUP 6-Es(Module 5 - Active and Module 6 - Stand-by) setup in a redundent mode. I am planning on changing the redundent mode to the shared backplane mode so I can use 2 TenGig converters to uplink 2 access-switches. We purchased 2 TenGig converters and here is how I am planning on using them:

1- One will be used  to uplink to two 3750 switches(stacked)
2- One will be used to uplink to a 2960 using a Gig SFP

My questions are:

1- Do I have to install the 2 TenGig converters(4-Gig Uplinks) in the same Module? Or can I use one one in module 5 and the second one in module 6?
2- Will changing the redundant mode to the shared backplane mode require rebooting the switch or disrupt the funtionality of the other linecards?
