I have just updated a VLAN interface on my router. I have two 6500's with GLBP configured. The particular interface had a primary and secondary IP address. I shutdown the interface on one router and deleted the secondary address then assigned the orignal secondary address to be the be the only address associated with the interface and enabled the interface and it came right back up...all looks good. I proceeded to do the same thing to the other router and once again all looked good. Now, I am able to PING the devices in the subnet from router, but am unable to ping them from any place else. I had a question on spanned ports - if i was to add another additional port with the command:
monitor session 10 destination interface Fa2/22
will this take out the existing monitoring configuration below? Will I have to add the whole line in including the interface - will this cause any disruption to existing traffic being spanned to those ports?
monitor session 10 source interface Fa2/3 - 5 , Fa2/8
monitor session 10 destination interface Fa2/2 , Fa2/33
#show mon

what is the best way to remove configs from ports (GigE or Fa) in a 6500 that we aren't using anymore (i.e. best way to return a port to default). Remove each line one at a time or is there a command to default a port?

On a number of 6500 chassis it appears that linecard 3 did exist at somepoint, but was removed.Problem is that when issuing the 'show int desc' or 'show ip int brie' the ports for the still appear, and indeed same with 'show run' and 'show conf'.

I've been looking into IGMP snooping and have read that a L2 switch will forward multicast traffic to all ports connected to an interested receiver AND all mrouter ports. In a L2 'V' topology this results in all multicast traffic routed onto a VLAN being forwarded to the 2nd distribution switch. My question is how should a 6500 Sup720 deal with this unwanted multicast traffic? Both a Local SPAN of the RP and a Netdr capture suggest that this traffic is punted to the RP and ultimately dropped. Is this expected behavior or should the traffic be dropped in H/W?

I am little confused about the location of FIB table and adjacency table in both cisco 6500 series and fixed ports switches .In case of 6500 series switches
"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor, and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode when line cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."
If line cards do no support CEF, then FIB and adjacency tables are built and are located on route processor( control plane ). Data plane operations are implemented in software and route processor performs those operations.
Some Cisco switches actually use different hardware to control the different planes. For example, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 is a modular switch that uses the Multilayer Switch.Feature Card (MSFC) for control-plane operations, and the supervisor Policy Feature Card (PFC) for the data-plane operations.
Supervisor module has has MSFC and PFC. MSFC implements control plane operation where as PFC implements data plane operation. But the first paragraph says in Central cef mode, both data plane and control plane operations are implemented by route processor. [code]
Do these switches implement the Central mode cef in same way as mentioned above. i.e
"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode whenline cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."Or fixed ports switches such as 3750 implement data plane operation in hardware where FIB tabe and adjacency table are maintained on Data plane.

It is my understanding that the FWSM for the 6500 series switches uses a 6 port Etherchannel on the backplane to communicate with the 6500 series switch. Can you shutdown vlan1 on the switch and still communicate with the FWSM? I was under the impression that you could not (although I am looking at a config with it shutdown)

I'm experiencing strange issue with my WS-C3750X-48T-S.
Model number: WS-C3750X-48T-S
System image file is "flash:/c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE3/c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE3.bin"
This switch is situated on a remote site and on the 6th of January it was rebooted.
I still do not know the cause, but it might be power outage or smth. We are still checking. After the reboot I've noticed that one port on this cisco switch is in 'notconnect' state, while I'm pretty sure it should be 'connected'.
I've tried to shutdown the port adminstratevly and do the 'no shutdown' but this port remained in 'disable' state.
#sh run interface Gi1/0/5

I have a single 2960s without stack module. The stack port has a status of down, however I'd like to disable it so that it does not generate a false alarm in my NMS. The documentation states that there should be a command "switch 1 stack port 1 disable" but the switch (running 15.0(2)SE2) doesn't seem to be available. Is this a dcumentation bug or is the command not there at all?

I understand the vlans on the catalyst side of the house on 2900 to 6500 Catalyst switches.
This 7010 running nx-os 5.1(3) I did not setup, but have to manage it. Hasn't really been a proble till now.
My nexus 7010 has a Layer 2 only vlan 11. It is "Active" but the interface is "shutdown". Yet, it is passing traffic across the directly connected ports on the nexus 7010 and to other switches in my network. Vlan 11 is being set out via VTP to all my switches and things are running fine.
I need to create another L2 only Vlan. I can't seem to find any docs that indicate that a Layer2 vlan Interface on nx-os should be in "shutdown" mode as part of the setup. I do see in the docs where it has to be set "Active" as part of the process.
Is this the correct way to seutp a L2 only vlan on nex-os? Leave the interface in "shutdown" but make it "Active"?
Mystery Vlan 4 and 6
The mystery deepens. I have other L2 vlans ,Vlan4&6 that are NOT defined as "Interface Vlan4" in the nexus config, yet it is applied to GigE ports on the nexus and these Vlans 4/6is also being sent out VTP to all switches. Even weirder is that these vlans have names associated with the numbers. These are valid Vlans that were configured on the old 6509 before the Nexus was installed.
I have checked all switches, NONE are running in Server mode for VTP, all are in CLIENT. The nexus 7010 is the only device running in VTP Server mode.

I am seeing a strange situation on my 6500 switch?By having snmp walk on '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3' (== cpmCPUTotal5sec), I came to know that there are two processor and the cpu util for switching processor is gone to 88 % and some time creeps to 99 %.
snmpwalk -v2c -c "removes" sw6500 '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3'
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.1 = Gauge32: 12 (--- this is for CPU of Router Processor )
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.3 = Gauge32: 99 (--- this is for CPU of Switching Processor )
but when I do sh process cpu on the console, all looks normal as it shows cpu utilization of RP. why the value is so high on the switching processor ?

I'm looking to restrict Inter-VLAN routing through L3 switch (cisco 6500) and wanted to know best possible way to do it. I used VACL and achieved success to some extent, but my config is making clients take up to 5-6 mins to authenticate IP address from the DNS (bootps). My VACL config was as follows:
Subnet to restrict is 10.100.15.0 (VLAN 15)
STEP 1: Created extended ACL to allow bootpc/bootps through DNS
ip access-list extended EACL_DNS
permit udp any eq bootps any
permit udp any eq bootpc any
STEP 2: Created standard ACLs to allow only relevant subnet, server VLANs & some IPs from other subnets for printers/scanners etc.
ip access-list standard SACL_VLAN_15
permit 10.100.15.0 0.0.0.255 (the subnet I'm restricting)
permit 10.100.50.0 0.0.0.255 (server VLANs)
permit 10.100.25.45 0.0.0.0 (printer in another VLAN which has to have access in VLAN 15)
STEP 3: Created VLAN access list
vlan access-map VACL_15 10
match ip address EACL_DNS
action forward
vlan access-map VACL_15 20
match ip address SACL_15
action forward
STEP 4: Applying VLAN Access list on VLAN 15 vlan filter VACL_15 vlan-list 15 Though the above works, below is noted:
1. I'm still able to PING 10.100.15.2 (the switch virtual interface) from outside the subnet, which I don't intend to do so. Howeve all cients in the subnet have no connectivity from outside the VLAN 15.
2. As mentioned its taking quiet some time to negotiate with the DNS server at system boot time.

I have tried to test copy tftp: numerous time with no success. I believe the reason it is failing is my laptop to Ethernet port is in vlan 62 and the tftp process operates in a different IP space.I am using gig 7/1 and configuring my laptop nic for x.x.x.254 mask 255.255.255.0. I can ping from laptop to gateway) and I can ping from the switch to my laptop using ping vrf production x.x.x.254. Can you tell me what vlan I need to set my laptop connection in or if there is something else I need to change to make tftp work on vlan62?Does TFTP only work in vlan1 or can it be changed?

We are setup like a hotel style workers camp. We have wings full of rooms and residents with 3750 stacks in them. Those switches connect back to our core 6500's. The network is mostly all Layer 3, interfaces are routed with IPs.
When it was built before my time they included an ACL for each wing so that residents couldn't access internal devices (IE SSH to 6500) but I've come to notice it's not working.
I see hits on the ACL for accepts but nothing is hitting the deny rule at the top. Here is the configuration below:
mls qos aggregate-policer INTERNET1 24000000 80000 80000 conform-action transmit exceed-action drop
mls qos aggregate-policer INTERNET2 24000000 80000 80000 conform-action transmit exceed-action drop
