Cisco WAN :: Setting Up 1921 With Two Ethernet WAN Ports Going To Two Separate ADSL ISP

Feb 17, 2011

I am setting up a 1921 with two ethernet WAN ports going to two seperate ADSL ISP's (via bridged modems) and one connecting to the internal LAN. There is a single e-mail / web server behind the router.

I have been reading the following which is exactly what we want to do, but I have questions. Maybe failover would be better because Load Balancing seems a little too quirky without BGP. url...

How do we define public static IP's, the example seems to show DHCP?In order to detect if a line is down, it has to ping an IP address that is specific to the connection - correct? So could I use the gateway for the ISP? The issue I have with this is the gateway might be up, but the Internet down. Next, we need to make sure that when someone visits one of our public IP addresses, the return data is sent through the connection requested. What we don't want is a situation where incoming connections are not working. From experience, load-balancing causes certain websites and SaaS applications to break because requests are coming from two different ISP's. Is this the case with OER? Finally, any links, config or something to advise how a fail over only configuration would work given we have internal servers (PAT/NAT inbound would need to translate properly with the failover IP)? Basically if ISP 1 goes down, I.E. router cannot ping 8.8.4.4 then it switches to ISP 2, until ISP 1 comes back online and switches back? This would need to change the NAT rules for inbound as described.

Cisco WAN :: 1921 / Multicast Not Received Properly Via Bridged Ethernet Interface

Jun 9, 2011

Using a small network (WAN) with three 1921 routers (IOS 15.1(T)) connected via E1 links. One host (industrial PC - core 2 due running Win XP Pro) connected to each router. The spare Gigabit Ethernet port on each router is bridged with the active one (so a portable management PC (laptop) can be plugged in there and communicate with the router and the industriual PC.

Multicast routing strategy between the routers is as per "Anycast - Static RP", with PIM sparse-mode enabled on all interfaces and sink RP defined on all three routers.

Problem occurs when a (IPV4) multicast application on one PC communicates with the others:

(a) IGMP V2 membersip reports etc. work correctly at the sender and at the other two PCs receiving the multicast stream

(b) Multicast routing on the WAN is working correctly; running Wireshark on the receiving PCs shows that multicast data is received on the expected group.

(c) But, there is an error in the Ethernet packets

i. The first packet's Ethernet header contains the correct destination MAC address 01:00:5E:aa:bb:cc where aa:bb:cc match with the last three octets of the mulicast group's address, and that packet is received OK by the listening multicast application

ii. However, subsequent packets' Ethernet headers have the wrong MAC address 01:00:5E:00:00:00 (the last three octets are all zeroes and these packets are discarded by Windows on the receiving PC and not seen by the multicast application.

Problem is related to the presence of integrated routing & bridging; if I delete the bridge virtual interface, disable bridging and give the two Gigabit Ethernet ports their own IP addresses, the multicast reception works correctly; all received multicast packets have te expected value on the destination MAC address (matching the group address)I have used the same integrated routing/bridging configuration successfully on Cisco 2611 and 2811 routers and there was no such issue with the multicast packets.Have I overlooked some subtle aspect of configuration in the 1921 router or have I uncovered a bug...?

For reference - snippets from router configuration scripts
:
In the non-working configuration (with Integrated Routing & Bridging)
 interface GigabitEthernet0/0
no ip address
duplex auto
speed auto

[code]....

In the working configuration all the bridging is gone and the two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces have a very plain & simple configuration in different subnets

interface GigabitEthernet0/0
ip address 192.168.212.1 255.255.255.128
no ip directed-broadcast
ip pim sparse-mode
duplex auto

[code]....

Cisco :: Low Performance When Connecting Switch To Port 5?

Jun 14, 2012

I'm new here but I'm not really new to networking. I manage small network but I just found out that I have some issues regards to speed. So what's the problemAs a main router/fw we have Fortigate 100A which then goes to a core switch SRW2016.This switch then handles two VLANS.The problem is that I have ports 5 assigned to VLAN 100 and port 6 to VLAN 101. They relate to DMZ1 (VLAN100) or internal (VLAN101).When I connect small unmanageable switch to port 5 I get very low performance (20kB/s internet, 2-3MB/s LAN) however when I plug in PC directly, I'm getting full speed.Port 6 with VLAN101 has the same unamangeable switch but no issues.Obviously you're thinking it's the switch - well I've tried replacing it allready. It's not the switch. Both ports have the same configuration (relating to their VLAN) but resolving it goes beyond my knowledge

Cisco Routers :: RV042 WAN Port Gives Poor Performance Most Of Time

Jan 1, 2013

I have 2 RV042 routers with identical firmware (1.3.13.02-tm) and settings. One router is a backup that sits in a box, but both experience this problem. The WAN port gives very poor performance most of the time. Download speeds range from normal, 25mb, to less than .5mb. Pings from my command prompt or the routers "Diagnostic" page, even to the cable modem, are almost always above 500ms. However, pings to internal resources are fast, usually under 5ms. If I connect my laptop directly to the cable modem I have no speed issues. The problem occurs whether I use WAN1 or WAN2.

If I restart the router, speeds are fine for a few seconds and then it begins to slow down like someone is turning down a dial. We also regularly experience a complete internet disconnect quite often, and when it happens, the ping results are the same when it comes back up, almost like the router is restarting itself. [code]

Cisco WAN :: 3750x Performance Poor When Both PCs NIC And Switch Port Fixed At 100 / Full

Jun 15, 2011

We have recently purchased some Cisco 3750x switches and we are getting complaints from users that the performance is poor when both the PC's NIC and switch port are fixed at 100/Full?

There are no errors or collisions on the switch interfaces so there is no obvious problem on the switch. The PC's are standard DELL Optiplex 755/760's
or gx 520's.

Any performance issues when configuring the switchport to 100/FULL?

Computer Ethernet Port Recognizes Modem But Not Router

Feb 10, 2011

My computer ethernet port recognizes any modem but will not recognize any wireless routers. My ISP (DSL) spent 3 hours on the phone with me and can't figure it out. I have also contacted Gateway, figuring it must be my computer. I make money on the side fixing computers, so I do have a good idea as to what is what. I run Win7 on a Gateway DX4822 with Intel Pentium Dou-core. I have searched and searched for months and have found nothing. I have asked this question on various forums (including Microsoft) and still nothing.

I have wireless connectivity with a USB 2.0 WAN antenna. I also have a blu-ray player, XBox 360, and Wii all hooked up through this router. The player and XBox are wired, the Wii and a printer is wireless.I have had all things disconnected while trying to solve this issue, thinking that somehow there wasn't enough juice getting through. The cable works. I have tried resets, powerdowns, restarts, system recovery (at one point for a few days it did work as I shared internet from a friend upstairs from me), system restore, many different wireless routers AND modems. With the router connected, the ethernet port light does NOT come on. With the modem directly connected, the light DOES come on. Other computers/laptops in the house work wired into the router.

Wireless Router Not Recognizing Ethernet Cable In The WAN Port?

Jul 10, 2012

I have a D-link WBR-2310 wireless router connected to a ZyXEL P-600 series modem. Everything worked fine untill a couple days ago when I had a power surge; since then the wireless router won't show on the modem that the ethernet cable is plugged in, and I get no wireless or DSL internet. I called the internet service provider, and they told me to reset both the modem and the router, which I did and it worked fine for about an hour; then it didn't recognize the cable again. I thought maybe it was the ethernet cable itself so I bought a new one, and it didn't correct the problem. When I hook any of the cables up directly from the modem to the labtop or the pc the ethernet light comes on and I have internet connection again. Why doesn't my router recognize the cable?
