Cisco WAN :: ASA 5505 Failover ISP Verizon Aircard
Apr 11, 2013
I’m working with a customer who has upgraded from a Sonicwall w/ PCMCIA card slot to a Cisco ASA 5505. They were using this slot with a Verizon card as an ISP failover. Obviously the ASA does not have a PCMCIA slot to reuse this aircard. However, I was wondering if there is another solution to use the existing aricard with the ASA.

I am using a Cisco 1921 with a Verizon 4G LTE card installed. The primary connection is a Cable Modem with the 4G LTE acting as the backup. I've setup a track on the static route to the primary ISP. I'm having multiple issues. Initially I used the Gig 0/0 int instead of a Loopback address for the IP SLA source. The IP SLA traffic would be sent to the cellular interface and cause an IP source violation and the interface would flap. Then I used the Loopback and I could not get the route to fail back when the connection came back up. Even with the Loopback as the source for IP SLA I'm still getting flapping and I think that is a NAT configuration issue. I've applied an access-group on the cellular interface to try to fix the ip source violation issues, but it doesn't appear to work. The IP-SLA-POLICY route map is an attempt to force the IP SLA traffic to the primary interface. [code]

We have two sites connected by a gigaman line. Routing between the two sites is done with a couple of HP routers. We also have two separate Internet connections, one at each site, through different providers. The border firewall at one site is a Cisco 5505 and at the other site it is a Cisco 5510. If the gigaman line goes down, we would like to fail over to a site-to-site VPN. Any clue how to set this up? We can set up the site-to-site VPN. how to make it serve as a failover. Another question is whether the VPN will cause confusion when the gigaman is operational.

I have a ASA 5505 which is connected to a remote site which also has a ASA 5505 over a L2L VPN tunel. One of the sites has a WAN failover configured with two ISP which is working successfully.
But, when the WAN connection fails over to the backup connection the VPN link breaks as the peer site IP address has changed and the VPN can not establish a connection.
Would it be possible to configure a VPN failover so that when the connection failovers so will the VPN tunnel?

There are 2x Cisco ASA 5505 in an active/standby failover config. The primary asa 5505 has been reset and the secondary is now running as active. I would like to reintroduce the primary again but need to know how to do this.
Ideally I would like to remove the failover config and start from scratch. Do I just need to enter the following to disable failover on the active secondary box?
no failover
no failover lan unit secondary
no failover lan interface failover Vlan999
no failover interface ip failover 192.168.254.1 255.255.255.252 standby 192.168.254.2

So we currently have a T1 connection at our location. We were looking to add a high speed cable internet and add an ASA 5505 with Security plus license to do failover between the two. I have found a few examples on how this would work but curious about a couple things.
We would want the Cable to be the primary, T1 as a backup.Currently the IAD that handles our T1 does dhcp, dns, and NAT.. Who/what would handle these items with the setup above?

I have two sites that each have asa 5505's and each have dual ISP's. Currently I'm using sla monitor to failover to the secondary line when there is a detected outage. After this sla failover occurs which seems to be instant, secondary ISP re-establishes the VPN. This process takes about 30 seconds. My thought is that the side which is healthy does not detect the outage due to a preset amount of timeouts and thats where this 30 second delay comes in to re-negotiate the VPN tunnel. can I create a smaller window of time to heartbeat between the two so that the VPN outagage is detected in around 5-10

I have a question regarding failover monitoring on the ASA5505 in an active/standby configuration.
I understand that on the 5505 you create VLAN interfaces and then assign the VLANs to the 5505 switchports. With failover configured on the 5505, the VLAN interface names are monitored. For example, VLAN 100 interface named Inside is assigned to ethernet0/1, switchport mode access. When issuing a show failover command the output will show the monitor status of interface Inside..
Does failover monitor the VLAN virtual interface only? Does failover also monitor the link status of the ethernet0/1 switchport?

I'm looking for automating a couple failover scenarios. Both VPN redundancy and black hole internet traffic redundancy.I currently use the more reliable T1 connection for the VPN connection and the DSL for internet traffic. My current configuration is working but requires a manual update to get the VPN or black hole back up and operational when either link fails.

I have a Cisco ASA 5505 in our office. We are currently using Interface 0 for outside and 1 for inside. We only have 1 Vlan in our environment. We have two three switches behind the firewall. Today the uplink to Interface 1, to the firewall, on the switch went bad. I want to setup a second inside interface on the firewall and configure it as failover incase this happens again. I want to attach it to the other switch. Can I do this? If so, what do I need to do? would it only be a passive/standby interface?

I have Verizon FIOS. I am using their Actiontec router. I turned on WPA2. All is working well. I wanted to turn it off to diagnose a problem with one device. I can see no way to turn it off. To turn it on you click WPA2. you put in an 8 digit "password" etc and it works. There seems to be no way to turn it off. Am I overlooking something? I tried deleting the password. but it gives you an error and remindes you the password needs to be 8 characters.

I have verizon fios 35/35 and i am told i have to run there modem/router combo for the tv ge to work properly. I have two ps3's hard wierd to the provided router, and one laptop running wirelessly. The problem is this: when the two ps3's are playing call of duty at the same time, whichever ps3 that was turned on first shows it has an open NAT type and whichever ps3 is turned on second shows a moderate NAT type (this makes them unable to play together online). I am familiar with prot forwarding but not sure if i can do this for two separate ps3's. So i hard wired a second router to the old router and ran everything out of the new one. Only now they are both a moderate NAT type. Ive played around with the UPnP settings, but dont really know what else i can do.

We live in the boondocks, and are forced to have Frontier for our ISP. We need to reconnect frequently, sometimes several times a day. We'd like to find an alternative to Frontier, and not a satellite connection (been there, done that).
We are thinking about seeing if VerizonWireless could be our ISP but before I talk to them I'd like to know how much data we download. I asked Frontier but because our plan is unlimited, they say they have no way to knowing our data download per month. We have a Gigaset SE567 modem, and I'm wondering if there is some way to figure out our data download from that.

I have a windows vista computer and my internet works through a modem/router. Just a couple of days ago my internet stopped working but the modem connection would always say its on. I've also noticed that the firewall is off and when I try to turn it on, it won't let me. Also, before the internet stopped working .I uninstalled pc tools *because I already had malwarebytes* but I don't know if that has anything to do with the internet not working. I've already tried the basics.. like putting it on safe mode and changing modems but nothing has worked so far.

Looking for setting up the RV180 behind the ActionTec MI424WR-GEN2. At the same time I want to be able to VPN into the network and be able to access objects.
Ideal setup:
Verizon ActionTec modem is primary network (192.168.1.x)
RV180 is secondary network (192.168.2.x)
VPN to 192.168.2.x network from remote locations (client-to-gateway)
I've tried asking from Cisco Support and was given the "we don't suppor that configuration" line. They want me to put it in front of the ActionTec FiOS modem/router in which case then Verizon will provide zero support for anything. Now, to add an extra twist, I do have STBs (Set-Top Boxes) connected to the Verizon FiOS modem/router but nothing special (i.e. no DVR or any stuff like that). How to get this thing up and running so that I can have remote folks VPN into the network? We work with data that needs to remain encrypted during transmission, hence the VPN.I have forwarded ports 443 (TCP), 60443 (TCP), 500 (UDP) and 4500 (UDP) to the WAN IP of the RV180. Network objects behind the RV180 cannot get past the router (it's in router, not gateway mode). The RV180 can ping objects both on the WAN and LAN side, so it seems that the RV180 is the problem child.
