Cisco Wireless :: How Client Count Affects Performance 3500
Feb 6, 2013
I'd like to know your experience regarding how client count affects performance.
What I have seen in a university network, with a very high client densiity, using 3500 APs, is that around 55 clients ping reply time gets over 200 ms; around 60 users there's packet loss; then, as CC increases, somewhere between 60 - 70 the service gets totally lost. Off course, this depends on bandwidth consumption per user, interference, etc.
Also, I'd like to know what we could expect from 802.11ac regarding this topic. Is there any information on tests, or some estimation already published?

we are running WCS 7.0.164.3 and wonder whether is there any reporting option availabel that can give us daily report on Top 50 or Top 100 APs by client count.
I know that I can look at the client tab under WCS home page and see the top 5 APs by client count on real time.In our environment we have around 700 APs and would like to know by having this kind of report which APs are mostly hit ?

I have an environment of Cisco 5508 Wireless Controller and 1142N Access Points. I have a problem with the ratio of concentration of clients connecting to Access points in floors.
Recently I have been turning off 802.11a on the access points and I am seeing increase in client count in a few of acces points. What is the maximum client count supported by these access points and how do i ensure they are distributed evenly on access points?

We use WLC 5508 with 7.4. We tried to set max allowed clients per AP radio to 30 through GUI. We have APs with 80 clients associeted though.
When entering config wlan max-associated-clients max-clients wlan-id we got
"WLAN/Guest-Lan/remote-lan is enabled. disable to configure max associated clients."
GUI doesn't show that message, should it? In GUI, Is it necesary to disable WLAN before too?

Can I have two wireless networks running in the house? Does a low internet speed affects my home network sharing capabilities? Can I have one network with internet and the other one just intranet. I would like to stream using DLNA without affecting my internet speed. I have D-link router DGL-4500 and another router Cisco Linksys E1000 new in a box.The internet provider in my area only provides up to 750KBps. I have a large number of internet enable wireless devices and most of the time the connections is not even fast enoguh to even stream youtube video

Only fifteen users are allowed to connect on the WLAN Controller WLANs provided on the 600 series at any one time. A sixteenth user cannot authenticate until one of the first clients de-authenticates or a timeout occurred on the controller. Note: This number is cumulative across the controller WLANs on the 600 series. For example, if two controller WLANs are configured and there are fifteen users on one of the WLANs, no users will be able to join the other WLAN on the 600 series at that time. This limit does not apply to the local private WLANs that the end user configures on the 600 series designed for personal use and clients connected on these private WLANs or on the wired ports do not affect these limits. This is from the Configuration Guide for teh 600 series Office Extend AP. Is this count per AP or total per WLC? If I have 10 APs deployed to our remote users, can each AP support two simultaneous users? Would I need to use separate WLANs for each OEAP?

So I'm going to bridge two Cisco AP's 1260 and 3500, which have an 880 router on each side.
(Currently I have a VPN set-up through the internet for the two locations to communicate) (Naturally they are currently in different subnets) Will absolutely change this and set up as one subnet. There is VLANs setup on each router (same VLANs)
VLAN 1
And
VLAN 10
Everything is configured on the Routers and AP's for these VLANs (works flawlessly over the VPN).
So now since I’m going to get rid of the VPN and set-up a bridge with two AP's, will having same VLANs across both routers be a problem? Will VLANs work OK through the bridge?
Besides using (IP helper address DHCP-IP) command on the non-root bridge side router to forward DHCP requests to the root bridge side router, Also I want to be able to route internet traffic on the non-root bridge side through the WAN port, and only route LAN traffic through the bridge..

We have couple of Cisco Aironet 3500 Series access points with the following P/N: "AIR-CAP3501E-A-K9", we have discovered that we need a wireless LAN controller to connect those new access points!, however, we do not have any wireless controller in our LAN.
We even tried to CLI through the console port but we could not set any static IP on it!, after reading on Cisco site we discover that this type of AP is called "Lightweight Access Point" LAP which handles all the management tasks to the controller!
So what shall we do! is it impossible to operate them without the controller?

We have had several APs disassociating from our controllers. The alerts say, Message: Access Point 'AP-xxxxx' associated to controller '10.x.x.x' on port number '0'. Reason for association 'Dot11g Mode Change. I have read several posts that point out that you should have QoS implemented to prioritize the CAPWAP traffic. I'd like to know if someone has implemented QoS and whether it has been successful in stopping the APs from disassociating. And if it has been successful do you have any configuration examples for the ports attached to the AP and controller as well as the QoS configuration?
We have several sites with AP1142's and 3500's. We have 2 5508 controllers. We are broadcasting 2 SSIDs of which one is in HREAP mode and the other is in local mode. Each of our sites have MPLS circuits.
Here is an example I found on Cisco which I believe can be used for CAPWAP as long as you change the ports to 5246 & 5247 instead of 12222 & 12223.
Example Router Configurations #
This section contains router configuration examples to be used as guides when addressing CS6 remarking or LWAPP control traffic load.
#
This example uses LWAPP APs on the 192.168.101.0/24 subnet, and two WLCs with ap-managers at 192.168.60.11, and 192.168.62.11. (code)

I am building a BOM for a customer and I need to present cheaper options than 3500 or 3600 APs. I thought of these two models but I don't know what models of antennas to pick.1602 is a 3X3 MIMO with 3 antenna connectors. How many 2.4 GHz and how many 5.8 GHz antennas should I pick for each radio?2602 is a 3X4 MIMO with 4 antenna connectors. In this case I suppose there are 2 connectors per radio.

I currently have WLC 5508 and a few campuses with LAP 1142, each with 2-3 vlan. Now one of our campuses have a building thas is a bit far away and needs network (wired). We can't get fiber or TP-cable there in a good way. So the plan is to get two 1262 or 3500 with AIR-ANT5160NP-R antennas and get a wireless link working between the campus and the building. And then connect one of the AP's to a switch in the other building to provide it with wired network.
The problem is that I can't find information on how to do it. Should both APs be in autonomus mode? I probably only need to have 1 VLAN in the other building but I am not sure yet. Is there a problem with transfering several VLAN over the WLAN-link?

We are deploying a new office and exploring the options for WLAN deployment. We were pretty impressed with 3500 series APs and that it supports CleanAir.However, we have decided to go for standalone AP deployment model now. As 3500 does not work in standalone mode, so we are looking for APs that can work in standalone mode ( and later can be converted to lightweight if needed). We can go for 1140 in that case. However, it would be better for us to know the main differences between features supported by 3500 lightweight AP and 1140 standalone AP. CleanAir looks like the main one. Are there other important ones as well?

I have problem with this 2 AP model 3500i out of 140 APs. below is my finding:-
1. Suspected AP froze with bright white light and dissociated from controller
2. After bounce back (shut / no shut) the port, its working as normal
3. In a while, its repeat to (1.)
4. Direct console to the AP, no output is seen.
From NCS & controller log, its only show as below:
AP 'TTR13-A03AP0076' disassociated from Controller '10.209.116.16'
AP 'TTR4-A02AP0014' disassociated from Controller '10.209.116.15'

Would like to check out some client side setting on Wireless 802.1x authenticaiton.
Network setup is using
- Cisco WLC 7.2 and AP3500,
- ACS 5.3
- Microsoft Windows server 2008 hosting AD and CA services (same machine)
- Client OS is Microsoft Window 7.
Authentication mehtod would use PEAP-MSChap V2 Combo.
My question :
01. In AD environment, should ACS 5.3 be part of the domain computer?
02. To have secure connectivity, IF the security policy force client to check "Validate server certificate", which certificate it is look for? Is it ACS's identity certifate, that require CA server to sign on the CSR?
03. Back to client side, should the client also need to import this certificate in trusted root certification authorities?
Or the client will trust ACS identity certificate against the root CA certificate store at client's trusted root certification authorities, where they have the identical issuer?
04. Extra question: If no CA environment, would it be sufficient simply export ACS self-signed certificate and import to client computer, and it's trusted?

I have a customer who bought Cisco Aironet 3500 Series. Currently 4404 WISM Controllers are installed with 1142 Access-Points. The WLC-Version is 6.0.199.
Will the 3500 Series Access-Points work? (Of course without the spectrum intelligence feature)?
The Q&A says the following: Are there any concerns with supporting the new Cisco Aironet 3500 Series Access Points with the older Cisco 2000, 2100, 4100, or 4400 Series Wireless LAN Controllers?

I have a project where I need to connect two building using a wireless bridge.I cisco specialist told me to purchase two 3500 (AIR-CAP3502P-A-K9) access points and an external antennas. The problem I have is these access points will need something to control them. If the access points will be in separate buildings will I need a controller on either side of the bridge to get them to work? What other cisco AP device capable of 300Mps dual band that are autonomous and can bridge between two buildings that are a 50 yards apart?

a customer has bought a new AP 3500 with external antennas and he would like use his old antenna AIR-ANT2485P-R.
We have the option to configure the antenna parameter in WLC under Wireless > Access Points > Radios > 802.11a/n or 802.11b/g/n for external antenna and and using only port A.
But if we enable only one port (Example: port A) we will get a warning message: Need to have at least both dual mode antennas (antennas A and B) enabled
Is it not possible to use an antenna like ANT2485P-N together with an Access Point like 3502E?

I am doing a predictive survey for a very large mixed environment facility.I have advised this customer that it would be best to have a professional site survey done and he understands but has requested I do a preliminary predictive survey and recommendation. This will have both open area manufacturing and also warehouse type areas with 18ft racks and cages, The actual ceiling height is approx. 30 ft. but the building steel I-Beams are at 18 ft and would be the mounting height of the AP. I already have several installs in other buildings with the exact same structure and setup using 1242 AP and AIR-ANT2465P-R and AIR-ANT5170P-R patch antennas mounted to a board, pointing down and at 18ft.
My question is: I would like to use either the 3500E or 3600E AP with diversity patch antennas (3600E & air-ant2566 for example) but see that Cisco also recommends the 2dbi stubby Omni dipoles in this type environment. I'd just like to get some opinions and thoughts on AP and antennas.

I have a new wireless configuration on a 5508 WLC. the controller is licensed for 12 AP's. I have plugged 8 AP's into the wireless vlan and 6 out of 8 come up with IP address and connect to the controller, broadcast two configured SSID's all seems good with them, but i have two AP's that do not get IP addresses. they are in the correct vlan i can plug a laptop into the group of ports in the val and get an IP address. So it seems to be just the AP's that don't. if i look at the consol of the AP it says: Waiting for PHY to auto negotiate . then it say timed out and continues to "boot with errors" then it continues to complain that it has no ip address. I have rebooted a few times and changed ports, and patch cables.

In previous LMS versions the DCR could hold more devices then the licenses of the other other applications permitted and using the "user defined fields" we have used it as a general device repository for some customers, pushing only the supported cisco devices to the various applications. In LMS 4 cisco has removed all allocation possebilities from the various applications and replaced it by an all or nothing type of allocation.Does this now mean that any entry in the DCR is automatically counted as a used device license?
