D-Link DIR-615 :: Laptops Keeps Losing IP Address / Gets A Self-assigned IP Address
Aug 23, 2009
I recently switched routers to the DIR-615 and I'm trying to troubleshoot why one of our laptops keeps losing the IP address and gets a self-assigned IP address. I see the following messages in the log, I am wondering if the reason codes are listed and explained somewhere? I tried searching the manual but could not find any information.

I have set up DHCP reservations to assigned IP addresses based on MAC address. I have to block my kids access at times, and when I do this they simply change their IP address and they circumvent the blocking.Other than punishing the kids (which hasn't worked - and they need computers and Internet for homework), is there anyway to lock a computer to MAC address to IP address so if they change it they won't get network/internet access?I also tried to set up network filtering and I put in all the PCs and devices I wanted to provide access for, including the router, but when I save changes I can no longer access the internet or the router. I have to do factory reset to get back into router config.Also, I'm on 1.30WW. I know 1.34 exists, which I tried on a previous router which died and was replaced by RMA; but this didn't solve any problems.

I have 3 Dcs-3420's on the same network same static ip setup and they never have issues. Im testing 1 942L, I've upgraded firmware to1.11, but periodically the camera loses its ip address which is weird because it is set static. My wireless is set to Mac address security. Now camera is outside in a shaded area, over night the camera worked all night, this morning it has reset three times. Additionally, each time it resets/losses ip address it also loses the manually set time.

I have 2 servers. 1 is a terminal server windows 2003 sb terminal server.(working fine) and the other is server 2003 small business DC configured with dhcp, dns, SQL, & wins. Last week one of the network programs that is located on the DC started refusing connections.So doing some trouble shooting I noticed that when I ping the server name I get a local address of *.*.*.42 when the address the machine is assigned is *.*.*.5. When I do an Ipconfig /all on the DC it only shows the *.*.*.5 number. I look in DHCP and *.*.*.5 is reserved for the DC Computer. And the *.*.*.42 isn't even in the address leases. I have also looked through the DNS settings and see no alias with the .42 number. And the number does not show up in the reverse lookup zone either.

I just rebuilt my network and I've encountered a problem with my wireless access. Right now I have a Dlink 2540B modem/wired router.To that is connected an 8-port Dlink 2208 Switch and a Linksys WRT110 wireless router. All the desktops connect via ethernet to the switch and everything is working fine. I just added the WRT110 and specified it would be a secondary router on the network but as soon as I got it connected it killed my internet. I assumed this was because of DHCP being enabled, which was true once I logged in and looked. I of course disabled it and now the internet is back up on the wired portion and I can connect to the wireless router as well. But the only problem now is that my wireless devices are not being assigned IP's at all. Specifically, my Mac says "airport has a self assigned ip address and will not be able to connect to the internet"How are IP's assigned to wireless devices that connect to the network via a wireless router with DHCP disabled?

I have a problem with my AIR-AP1041N-E-K9, i do not seem to get an ip-address assigned after a reset to factory defaults.I do see the AP with CDP:
Device-ID: ap
Advertisement version: 2
Platform: cisco AIR-AP1041N-E-K9
Capabilities: TransBridge IGMP
Interface: gi5, Port ID (outgoing port): GigabitEthernet0
Holdtime: 163
Version: Cisco IOS Software, C1040 Software (C1140-K9W7-M), Version 12.4(25d)JA1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
[code]...
I also noticed that when i connect to the AP via console-cable, i can see the AP boot up in the console session, but then i do not get a login prompt, but it seems like the AP is responding; if i shutdown the interconnecting link between the switch and the AP, i do see log messages appearing in the console-connection.I have tried to debug on the Switch, but i need a password, so i can debug, which i do not have.,

I have a Dell Inspiron 530s desktop running Vista SP2. When I attempt to get online using a cable or a wireless USB adapter I get a self-assigned IP Address. When I manually add an IP and DNS addresses I can't get online also. I have removed my security software (webroot) and have disabled Windows Firewall.The same ethernet connection works on another one of my computers fine.

I am trying to setup VLANs and most of configurations are working ok now except IP address assignment from DHCP. If any computer in VLAN 120 or 130 configured with manual IP address, then all works fine. It can reach internal servers and the internet without problem.If the IP address is assigned automatically then any computer in VLAN 120 or 130 are obtaining IP address (strangely!) from VLAN 100. Because switch ports that connected to the computer belongs to VLAN 120 or 130, the computer cannot reach internal servers and the internet with ip address from VLAN 100 . All SVI interfaces for VLAN 100, 120 and 130 have ip helper-address option defined pointing to the DHCP server. No DHCP snooping enabled on all switches at this point. DHCP server have three scopes for the three different VLANs.

I own a HP laptop (runs Windows 7), and lately when I either turn it on or log back in for the first time in a day, it's not connected to the internet, despite my brother's desktop computer (Windows XP) being connected (it's right beside the router and modem). Before, we would have to just unplug the router for a few seconds and then plug it back in again to get the connection to work again on my laptop, which that alone we don't understand why, as there are periods of time we have no problems connecting on either end, like I just bought this laptop at Christmas and have had no connectivity problems until now. Now however, when we unplug the router and plug it back in, it kicks my brother's computer off the internet despite his connection being good prior to, apparently it loses its IP address when we do that. So then we have to unplug/replug the modem and router plus sometimes restarting my brother's computer to finally get it working again.

I have 2 older xp pro tough books that connect to my domain via a pair of versa vx 400 access points. automobile technicians use these computers to communicate with cars via a separate wireless card and WiFi device (SPX MVXI) that broadcasts a wireless signal.they always connect just fine to the network but sometimes they drop there connection and don't rejoin which screws up my scheduled tasks (nightly upload). They will reacquire the connection every time if i select it again manually in the windows wireless config.here is what I have done so far
1. set up exclusion range in DHCP distribution on my DC
2. set the laptops up with static IP's within the exclusion range.
3. configured the laptops to auto connect to the network even when its not broadcasting
4. set the access points on channel 7, and the devices on 1 and 11.
I have done a lot of research on this issue, a rep from versa told me that Intel proset wireless isn't very compatible with there product which i this is BS since it does the same with with the netgear WiFi PC cards.

When we have a power outage the Acer desk top loses it's internet connection. Trying to reconnect the connection takes hours. Even when we finally get it back we have no idea how we did it. I switched from Time Capsule with AirPort to E2000 and have a problem with configuration.I use the same IPs as in AirPort and E2000 gives me an error:"The WAN IP address cannot be the same subnet as the Guest Network IP address" and I can't save configuration.But in my opinion they are different.I use "Static IP" option and I have IPs from my ISP: [code] So WAN IP is different subnet as LAN and I don't know what to do now. It worked with these settings in AirPort and here I can't proceed.

I am having an issue where occasionally the Sidewinder starts to see my internal RFC 1918 address instead of the configured external address of my firewall. This is for peering between the two. The error they see on the Sidewinder is:So instead of seeing the external peer address he sees a 10.220.3.18 address. We are not sure what triggers this becuase normally he see's my 63.117.98.222 address.

I have an old ASA 5505, and I'm having some trouble with Nat Hairpinning. I've done this with other firewalls before and I am having no luck now. I have an internal address that I wish to forward from an external address- so if someone goes to 123.456.789.012:3456 then it will forward to 192.168.1.244:92 (All numbers are arbitrary here- only for illustration). I have and Access Rule and NAT and PAT set up so that I can get in if I originate from outside the LAN. What I am trying to do is to have this work from inside the LAN as well- so that if I am at my desk, and I connect a device and type in 123.456.789.012:3456, it will deliver the content at 192.168.1.244:92. The problem I am having is that it just isn't working, and I cannot figure out why- When I started here, there was an address configured to work this way, and it still works- I just cannot find what is different between what I am doing and what the person who configured it did.

We have an ADSL connection and use a D-Link DSL-320B modem. We have a D-Link DIR-120 router connected to this modem. This has worked perfectly fine up until today when we disconnected the router and connected a computer (call it A) directly to the modem because it was getting an unusable connection through the router for some reason. We later also performed a factory reset on the DIR-120 router.
Unfortunately, after the above steps the router did not receive any IP address (through DHCP) from the ADSL connection anymore. During my attempts to debug this I noticed that my laptop (call it B) didn't get any IP address either (when connected directly to the modem). I noticed the following syslog entries repeating over and over while trying to connect: [code]
At this point computer A could still get a connection just fine tho (when connected directly to the modem).
I then tried to change the MAC address of the router to an arbitrary one (a copy of computer B's MAC address but with the last digit increased by one). The router still did not get assigned any IP address. Finally I tried making the router clone the MAC address of a third computer (call it C). C has never been connected directly to the modem. Doing this worked. After cloning the MAC address of computer C the router is immediately assigned an IP address and the internet connection works as it did prior to all this.
Now, my question is, why would computer B and the original MAC address of the router not be able to get an IP address while two other computers worked just fine? Why would changing to an arbitrary MAC address not work while cloning the MAC address of another computer did? Could the router's MAC address have been blocked by the ISP for some reason (and what could cause this)?
but my situation seems more like a blacklisting of some MAC addresses rather then allowing just a single MAC address.

I recently configured and installed a 1941ISR for a customer. The customer purchased a 25-User SSLVPN license with the router, and I configured it for remote SSLVPN access. This is working nicely except for one issue: when users initiate an SSLVPN connection request by browsing to the assigned webvpn gateway IP, they get the "There is a problem with this website's security certificate" browser message. They are in the process of working with their DNS hosting provider to get a DNS entry assigned to the IP address so the users won't have to specify an IP address in the URL address box, but they will continue to get the certificate error until/unless I can figure out how to resolve the issue.
I've tried the following "How to make IE8 trust a self-signed certificate in 20 irritating steps" that I found via another forum link but with no luck:
1.Browse to the site whose certificate you want to trust.
2.When told "There is a problem with this website's security certificate.", choose "Continue to this website (not recommended)."
3.Select Tools->Internet Options.
4.Select Security->Trusted sites->Sites.
5.Confirm the URL matches, and click "Add" then "Close".
6.Close the "Internet Options" dialog box with either "OK" or "Cancel".
7.Refresh the current page.
8.When told "There is a problem with this website's security certificate.", choose "Continue to this website (not recommended)."
9.Click on "Certificate Error" at the right of the address bar and select "View certificates".
10.Click on "Install Certificate...", then in the wizard, click "Next".
11.On the next page select "Place all certificates in the following store".
12.Click "Browse", select "Trusted Root Certification Authorities", and click "OK".
13.Back in the wizard, click "Next", the "Finish".
14.If you get a "Security Warning" message box, click "Yes".
15.Dismiss the message box with "OK".
16.Select Tools->Internet Options.
17.Select Security->Trusted sites->Sites.
18.Select the URL you just added, click "Remove", then "Close".
19.Now shut down all running instances of IE, and start up IE again.
20.The site's certificate should now be trusted.
I followed all 20 irritating steps to the letter, but am still getting the security certificate nat.Now when I “Continue to this website (not recommended)” and click on "Certificate Error" at the right of the address bar, the certificate error windows says “Mismatched Address”.Is there a way that I can get this fixed without resorting to a 3rd party CA?
